This invention relates to steam boilers for house heating, particularly of the cast metal type.
Its purpose is to provide a quick action generator in association with one or more steam boxes and with water legs and a steam dome whereby, when the nre is lighted, steam is quickly formed and thereafter the whole boiler acts as a regular slow action steam producer associated with an intermittently operative quick action steam generator.
It includes water legs which extend down on -all sides of the iire box or pot and are so connected at the top as to form a steam dome. It also includes a small bottom quick action generator, preferably in the form of a pipe or tube which extends through the water legs from front to back across the rire pot close to the blaze. This generator is connected at one end by a feed pipe, in which is a check valve, with one of the water legs, and at the other end with a water column pipe. There are one or more steam boxes, preferably of rectangular shape which can be slipped into suitable passages through the front or back so that they can readily be replaced when necessary. These boxes are connected together at opposite ends, the top box connects with the top of the steam dome and the bottom box connects through the water column pipe, which extends up to the bottom of the dome section and then extends down, andis connected with the end of the generator which is opposite the check valve.
The water legs, boxes, generator and water co1- umn pipe are lled with water and when thek re is started, steam is formed in the'generator and this steam forces water from the water co1- umn and from the boxes into the dome. The check valve then opens letting in a small quantity of water which is quickly formed into steam, the surplus water being forced up through the water column pipe and through the boxes where it is turned into steam and the steam is dried or superheated and delivered into the dome.
The device is particularly useful in connection with oil or gas heaters in which it is desirable to get up steam quickly as soon as the main re is lighted or increased in heat by any of the usual automatic means, but it can be used with coal or wood fuel.
It is preferably made in castvertical sections, the number of which can be increased or decreased, suitably fastened and connected together and arranged to provide a complete steam dome at the top and water legs on all sides of the re pot and combustion chamber, the front and back legs having passages for the steam boxes and generator.

On the inside of each water leg are steam box supports in the form of brackets 3, 3.
F represents a front vertical transverse section which includes a dome part Il, a front water leg l2, a fire inlet shown as a door le, and a smoke 30 passage i9 whereby the products of combustion can pass away. Through the front section F at a point preferably just above the re inlet i8, and near the top of the fire pot 8 where the flame is hottest, is a steam generator passage il, into 35 and through which passes generator G. There are also, passing through the front section F above the passage Il, three steam box passages I3, I3, I3. There is also an inspection door H3 and a smoke outlet clean out door i i 4 and a steam 40 generator feed nipple i5 which Aextends out of the water leg i2, preferably at the same level with the generator passage il.
B represents a back vertical transverse section provided at the top with a dome part 2i and with 45 a back water leg 22 which connects with the dome and extends down at the back of the re box.

'Ihis steam generator G is shown as a tube which extends into and through the es Il and 21 in the hottest part ofthe fire and is con- 55 nected by steam generator feed pipe 40 with the feed nipple I5. In this pipe 40 is a check valve 4I which allows water from one of the water legs to flow into the generator G but prevents it from flowing back.
As shown there are three steam boxes A, A, A positioned "n the steambox passages I3 and 23, each box being shown as of rectangular shape and having through one end two vertical smoke passages 4, 4, between which are the vertical partitions 5, 5 formed as vertical bafes and having nipples 6, 6 in opposite ends or diagonally from each other whereby the lower is connected to one end of the middle box and the other end of that box is connected to a corresponding end of the third box by means of pipes 45, 46, 41 and the top box is connected with the top of the dome by pipe 48.
50, 50 represent the passages provided with suitable connecting nipples between the front, middle and back sections at the top, and 5|, 5|, similar passages and nipples which connect the front, back and side water legs.
The principal feature is the water column pipe C which extends from the end of steam generator G which is farthest from the check valve, out and over to avoid the re door I8, thence up to the` level of the bottom of the dome and thence down to one end of the lowest steam box.
In Figs. 9 and 10 are shown a simplified type of the device incorporated in a non-sectional boiler.
H is the boiler proper which includes a dome part 60, a front water leg 6I, back water leg 62 and side water legs 63 and 64. These enclose a fire pot 65 and are provided with generator passages 66 and 61 for a steam generatoiI K which rests in them, the passages and generator being positioned near the top part of the fire pot where the heat is greatest. 68 and 69 are steam box passages positioned above the generator passages 66 and 61 and in them is a single steam box L which has near one end a single vertical smoke passage 12 for the products of combustion which pass through the end and thence out through a smoke outlet 80.
8| is a steam generator feed nipple which is on a level with the passages 66 and 61 and this connects with one end of generator K by steam generator feed pipe 15 in which is located 'a check valve 16.
13 and 14 are nipples at opposite ends of steam box L. Nipple 13 connects with the water column pipe M which extends up to .a point just above the bottom of the dome 6U and thence runs down and into the end of generator K which is opposite its feed pipe 15.

I claim:-
1. The combination in a steam boiler of a plu-4 rality of vertical transverse intermediate sections, each including a dome part at the top, and
side water legs on the inside of which are steambox supports; a front vertical transverse section including a dome part, a front water leg, a fire inlet and a smoke passage, a steam generator passage proximate the fire inlet, a plurality of steam box passages above the ire inlet, inspection doors and a steam generator feed nipple; a back verand back; a steam generator feed pipo which connects one end of the steamv generator with its feed nipple in the water leg; a check valve in the generator feed pipe; a water column pipe which extends from the other end of the steam' generator up to a point proximate the bottom of the steam dome sections thence down and into the lowest steam box; a steam 'outlet at they top of one of the sections and a water inlet in one of the sections; and connecting pipes between the steam boxes and the top of the dome; there being steam and water passages at the top and bottom between the various sections.
2. The combination in a steam boiler of a dome part at the top, side water legs on the inside of which are steam box supports, a front water leg, a back water leg, a fire pot, steam generator passages proximate the top of the re pot and a plurality of steam box passages above the fire pot both through the front and back Water legs,
a steam generator feed nipple from the back water leg and a smoke outlet; a steam generator which extends from front to back through the steam generator passages; a plurality of steam boxes positioned in the steam box passages, each steam box having through one end, a vertical smoke passage and having nipples at the front and back; a steam generator feed pipe which connects one end of the steam generator with its feed nipple in a water leg; a check valve in the generator feed pipe; a water column pipe which extends from the other end of the steam generator up to a point proximate the bottom of the steam dome sections thence down and into the lowest steam box; a steam outlet at the top of the dome part anda Water inlet into a water leg and connecting pipes between the steam boxes and the top of the dome.
3. 'I'he combination in a steam boiler having a dome part at top, front, back and side water legs which enclose .a fire pot, steam generator passages through the water legs near the top of the iire pot, steam box passages above the generator passages and asteam generator feed nipple from the back water leg; of a steam generator which extends from front to back through the steam generator passages; a steam box having a vertical smoke passage through one end and having nipples at the front and back, such steam box being positioned in the steam box passages, a steam generator feed pipe which connects one end of the steam generator with its feed nipple in a water leg; a check valve in the generator feed pipe; a water column pipe which extends from the other end of the steam geenrator up to a. point proximate the bottom of the steam dome and thence down into the steam box; a steam outlet at the top ofthe dome part and a water inlet into a water leg and a connecting pipe between the steam box and the top of the dome.
