This invention relates to collar and cuff pressing machines and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which has heated movable and relatively fixed pressing elements especially shaped for pressing collars and cuffs and an operating mechanism for retaining the movable pressing element in pressing position with a desired pressure against the relatively fixed pressing element for a period of time to assure proper pressing of a collar or cuff and automatically releasing the movable pressing element after said period of time to permit the removal of the pressed collar or cuff and the placing in position thereof another collar or cuff to be pressed.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and; arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view illustrating a collar or cuff pressing machine constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan View illustrating the same.
Figure 4 is an end view illustrating the device.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a suitable base having mounted thereon stands 2 and 3 each of which may be leveled on the base by mediums 4 in the form of shims or like devices. Any suitable fastening means may be employed for securing the stands on the base. The stand 3 forms an integral part of a non-movable pressing element 5 arcuately curved, as shown in Figure 2. Operating in conjunction with the pressing element 5 is a movable pressing element 6 shaped similarly to the pressing element 5. The pressing elements 5 and 6 have electrical heating elements I, or if desired, these pressing elements may have steam heating means employed in lieu thereof. The movable pressing element 6 is mounted to swing towards and. from the non-movable pressing element and is equipped with portions 8 to which'is secured a shaft 9.
i, The shaft is journaled in posts I0 carried by the base. An extension I I is formed on the journaled end of the movable pressing element 6 and is bifurcated to form spaced ears l2 between which is located a cam roller IS. The cam roller is suitably journaled in the ears l2 and rides upon a cam l4 secured to a shaft I5. The shaft I5 is journaled in an upright l 6 carried by the stand 2 and the latter also supports an electric motor I! connected to the shaft I5 by a suitable train of gears l8. A spring I9 is connected to' the movable pressing element and normally acts to urge 5 the cam roller l3 in engagement with the cam I4. The cam roller when in engagement with the low face of the cam permits the spring to position the movable pressing element 6 away from the non-movable pressing element so that a col- 10 lar or cuff may be placed thereon.
The electric motor I! is connected to an electric circuit 26 in which is located a switch 2| controlled by an arm 22 carrying a roller 23 which rides the cam roller IS. The switch is opened 15 and closed by the pivotal movement of the arm 22. The arm 22 when in its lowermost position breaks the circuit and when in its uppermost position closes the same so that when the cam roller is in engagement with a high face of the cam the circuit is completed to the electric motor causing a rotation of the cam and as the high face of the cam forces the movable pressing element into engagement with the non-movable pressing element with desired force, the collar or cuff will be pressed for a period of time governed by the turning of the cam I4 or until such time that the cam roller engages the low face of the cam, permitting the spring to elevate the movable pressing element from the non-movable pressing ele- 30 ment. The parts thus positioned expose the pressed collar or cuff so that it may be readily removed from the non-movable pressing element and another collar or cuif placed thereon for pressing. 35
To start the operation of the device, a handle 24 is secured to the shaft for raising the cam roller upwardly and consequently bringing the movable pressing element into engagement with the non-movable pressing element. The upward 0 movement of the cam roller elevates the switch arm, closing the circuit and thereby starting the electric motor. The operator releases the lever 24 as soon as the high face of the cam engages the cam roller. The high face of the cam maintains 5 the pressing element 6 in engagement with the pressing element 5 with a desired pressure to assure proper pressing of the collar or cuff. The pressing elements remain in this position until the circuit is broken by the cam roller engaging the 50 low face of the cam. Thus it will be seen that the collar or cuff will receive after the starting operation of the machine a pressing force thereon for a predetermined length of time. The predetermined length of time for the pressing operation can be governed by the train of gears employed between the electric motor and shaft l5.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A collar or cuff pressing machine comprising a base, a fixed pressing element carried by said base, a movable pressing element carried by said base for cooperation with the fixed pressing element in pressing a collar or cuff therebetween, a shaft secured to the movable pressing element and journaled on the base to permit a hinging movement of the movable pressing element towards and from the fixed pressing element, a cam roller jo-urnaled on the movable pressing element, a support carried by the base, a cam journaled on said support, and having high and low faces to engage the cam roller, spring means acting on said movable pressing element to retain the cam roller in engagement with the cam, an electric motor connected to said cam, an electric circuit for said motor, a switch in said circuit and including a pivotal control arm contacting the cam roller for breaking the circuit during the engagement of the cam roller with the low face of the cam and to close said circuit during the engagement of the cam roller with the high face of the cam, and means for movingthe movable pressing element into pressing position.
2. A collar or cuff pressing machine comprising a base, a fixed pressing element carried by said base, a movable pressing element carried by said base for cooperation with the fixed pressing element in pressing a collar or cuff therebetween, a shaft secured to the movable pressing element and journaled to the base to permit a hinging movement of the movable pressing element towards and from the fixed pressing element, a cam roller journaled on the movable pressing element, a support carried by the base, a cam journaled on said support and having high and low faces to engage the cam roller, spring means acting on said movable pressing element to retain the cam roller in engagement with the cam, an electric motor connected to said cam, an electric circuit for said motor, a switch in said circuit and including a pivotal control arm contacting the cam roller for breaking the circuit during the engagement of the cam roller with the low face of the cam and to close said circuit during the engagement of the cam roller with the high face of the cam, heating means for said pressing elements, and manual means for moving the movable pressing element into pressing position and thereby operating the switch to close the circuit.
