This invention pertains to a novel machine for cutting or shredding vegetables and the like and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character wherein various types of cutting and shredding elements may be quickly and easily changed to adapt the device for use in performing different operations in the treatment of vegetables and like foodstufis. In connection with the interchangeability of the cutting and shredding ele- 1-; ments it is another object of the invention to provide a construction and arrangement of parts which is inexpensive and durable and which is simple in construction and operation and therefore adapted for domestic use.

17; Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the parts may be quickly and easily dismantled for the purpose of thoroughly cleaning the same.

With the above and other ends in View the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation;

Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.

The numeral I designates a substantially conical casing supported upon a strap member 2 which is bent at its upper end to provide bearings 3. To the lower end of the member 2 is secured a supporting bracket 4 and a set screw 5 co-operates 45 with the bracket 4 for attaching the device to a table or like support.

A crank 6 has its end I inserted through the bearings 3 and is screw-threaded into the center of a conically shaped element 8 so as to rotat- 50 ably support the latter within the casing I. The

element 8 is provided with a plurality of radially extending cutting edges or knives 9.

Attached to the open end of the casing I is a shield ID having a flange II to which one end of a strap I2 is pivotally attached so that the other end swings toward the center of the device. The free end of the strap I 2 has an aperture receiving a pilot I3 on the end of the end I of the crank.

At its lowermost part the casing I is bent to form a chute I4 and the shield II] is bent away from the casing I as at I5 in order to permit the chopped or cut vegetables to fall from the casing.

In operation, the vegetables to be out are placed between the shield II! and the conical element 8 and the latter is rotated by manual pressure on the crank 6. The shield Ill and the strap member I2 hold the vegetables against movement and as the cutting edges 9 are moved across the vegetables the latter are sliced and the slices pass through the element 8 and into the casing I, from which they are discharged through the chute I4.

When it is desired to remove the element 8 for cleaning purposes the crank 6 is rotated manually in a counterclockwise direction while the element 8 is held stationary by the hand of the operator. The crank will thus be removed from the element 8 and the latter may be easily removed from the casing I.

In Figs. 5 and 6 there is illustrated a modified cutting element 8a having openings formed therein by punching out the metal to provide it with a series of jagged prongs. The jagged prongs serve as shredding instrumentalities.

In Figs. 7 and 8 there is illustrated a cutting element 8b having apertures 9b formed therein with the edges thereof bent to provide cutting edges 90. The elements 8a and 8b are adapted to be mounted in the casing I in the manner described in connection with the element 8 and are adapted to be used interchangeably therewith.

Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim is:

In a device of the character described, a substantially conically shaped casing, a bracket supporting said casing, a shaft loosely journalled in said bracket and extending into said casing, a substantially conical shaped cutter demountably mounted on said shaft within said casing, a shield attached to the open end of said casing and having bent portions coinciding with a. depressed portion of said casing to provide a chute, said shield covering a substantial portion of the lower part of the open end of said casing and being formed outwardly thereof to provide an open mouth for the reception of materials to be treated, and a strap member attached at one end to the upper edge of said shield and having its other end received on the end of said shaft.
