This invention relates to cutting machines, and more particularly to a machine for cutting vegetables, such as string beans, into small pieces, for cooking and eating the same.
The general object of the invention is to provide a machine for cutting string beans and the like which is simple,` efficient in operation and inexpensive.
A more particular object is to provide a cutting machine of the character stated which may be readily clamped upon the edge of a table for use, and unclamped and removed from the table when not in use.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing which forms a part of this speciiication and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my invention shown clamped upon the edge of a table in position for use, with its cutting mechanism extending over and above the table and with a bowl resting under said mechanism for receiving the Vegetables cut thereby.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section of my invention taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters in all the figures of the drawing.
My invention comprises a horizontal frame I, formed at one end with a depending supporting member 2 and a clamp 3 at the lower end of said supporting member; a cutting wheel 4 journaled in said frame; a grooved roller 5 journaled in said frame for coacting with said cutting wheel; a crank 6 for rotating said cutting wheel; a scraper I for scraping the cuttings from said cutting wheel; and a guard 8 extending over a portion of said cutting Wheel for protecting the hands of the operator of the machine from being cut by said cutting wheel.
The clamp 3 comprises a pair of spaced clamp members 9 and I and a clamp screw II seated in the member I6, which members are adapted to extend over the edge of a table I2 with the member 9 resting upon the upper side of the table and the member I extending under the table, so that the upper end of the screw I I may engage the under sider of the table and draw the upper clamp member 9 tightly against the upper side of the table for clamping the machine on said table in position for use, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The frame I, supporting member 2 and clamp members 9 and I0 may be formed of a single piece of metal strap I3, which is bent at right angles at I4 and I5 to form an end member I6 at one end of said frame and side members I1 and I8 of said frame, bent inwardly at I 9. and 20 to form end members 2| and 22 at the other end of said frame, which end members are brought together and bent nat upon each other centrally of the frame I at 23, completing said frame, and the remaining portions of said strap twisted together at right angles at 24 and bent downwardly together at right angles at 25 to form the supporting member 2, and the ends o-f said strap bent inwardly at right angles to said supporting member in spaced relation to form the clamp members 9 and I0 respectively.
The cutting wheel 4 comprises a plurality of cutting discs 26, a plurality of spacing Washers 2 arranged between said discs and spacing the same apart in cutting relation, and a pair of end spacing washers 28 and 29 arranged at the ends respectively of said cutting wheel for spacing the discs at the ends of the wheel from the side members I1 and I8 respectively of the frame I, said cutting discs and said washers all being tightly iitted on a drive shaft 30 which extends transversely through the frame I with its ends journaled in said side members of said frame. whereby the cutting wheel 4 is mounted within the frame I. The discs 26 are formed with sharp peripheral cutting edges 3l. One end of the drive shaft 30 is formed with a threaded socket 32 and one end of the crank E is threaded as at 33 and screw seated in said socket, whereby said drive shaft and the cutting Wheel 4 may be rotated by rotation of said crank.
The grooved roller comprises a plurality of discs 35 and a plurality of spacing Washers 36 tightly fitted on a shaft 31, which shaft extends through the frame I with its ends journaled in the side members I'I and I8 of said frame, whereby said roller is positioned in said frame to receive the cutting edges 3I of the cutting discs 26 of the cutting wheel 4 within the annular grooves 38 respectively o-f the roller, said grooves being formed between the roller discs 35 by the spacing washers 36 of such width that said cutting discs will be engaged with suilicient friction between the sides of said grooves to cause said discs, when rotated by the crank 6, to rotate the roller 5 for enabling said cuttin-g discs to cut up vegetables fed between the cutting wheel 4 and said roller 5.
The scraper l and the guard 8 are secured respectively to the under side and upper side of the frame l by a bolt 40 and nut 4l, which bolt extends downwardly through said frame at the junction of the frame end members 2| and 22, and said nut screws on the lower end of said bolt against the scraper 1, whereby the rear ends of said scraper and guard are respectively secured against the lower and upper edges of said end members.
The scraper 'i is slotted rearwardly from its forward edge at 42 to receive the cutting discs 26 of the cutting wheel 4 and provide scraping teeth 43 which extend between said cutting discs and engage the sides thereof to scrape any cuttings from said discs which may adhere thereto. (See Fig. 4.) l
The guard 8 extends over the rear portion of `the cutting wheel 4 for protecting the. hands 0f the operator while feeding Vegetables to be cut 'between said cutting wheel and the cutting roller 5, and said guard is formed at its side edges with depending arms 44 provided with openings 45 in their lower ehds through which extends the ends of the cutting wheel drive shaft 35, whereby the forward end of the guard 8 is supported and prevented from being bent down against the cutting wheel discs 25.
The operation, uses and advantages of my invention are as follows:
My cutting machine being clamped on the edge `of a table l2 by the clamp 3, a bowl 50 or other receptacle is placed on the table under the cutting wheel 4 and its coacting grooved roller 5, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The operator feeds the vegetables, such as string beans, into the upper side of the machine between the cutting wheel 4 and the roller 5, and rotates the cutting wheel, by means of the crank 6, clock- `wise (see Fig. l), whereupon the cutting wheel 'discs 26, in the roller grooves 38 in frictional engagement with the sides of the roller discs 35, rotate the roller 5 counterclockwise, and such coaction of the cutting wheel and roller causes the Asharp peripheral cutting edges 3| of said cutting discs to cut the beans or other vegetables into small pieces, which drop from the cutting wheel 4 and roller 5 between the cutting wheel discs 26 into the bowl 50. Y By means of my cutting machine a considerable quantity of string beans or other vegetables may be cut up into small and uniform pieces in a short time and with little effort or skill.
My cutting machine is particularly useful in restaurants, hotels, institutions and other places where large quantities of string beans or other vegetables cut into small pieces are required for cooking and eating.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cutting machine comprising a piece of metal strap, bent to form a frame, a supporting member for said frame and a clamp for clamping said supporting member on the edge of a table with said frame above the table, said piece of strap being bent first at right angles at two points to form the forward end member and the two side members of said frame, then bent inwardly together and upon itself to form the rear end frame members, then twisted and bent downwardly to form said supporting member for said frame, and the ends of the strap then being bent inwardly to form the clamp members of said clamp, cutting means mounted in said frame for cutting vegetables so that the cut vegetables will drop into a bowl on the table below said frame, a guard mounted on said frame over the rear part of said cutting means, and a single bolt extending through said guard and through said frame at the junction of said rear end frame members, and a nut on the threaded end of said bolt for securing said guard in position on said frame.
2. A cutting machine as characterized by claim 1 in which the guard is formed with depending arms through which extend a shaft of said cutting means.
3. A cutting machine comprising a piece of metal strap, bent to form a frame, a supporting vmember for said frame and a clamp for clamping said supporting member on the edge of a table with said frame above the table, said piece of strap being bent rst at right angles at two points to form the forward end member and the two side members of said frame, then bent inwardly .together and upon itself to form rear cnd frame members, then twisted and bent downwardly to form said supporting member for said frame, and `then bent inwardly near its ends to form the clamp members of said clamp, a cutting wheel and a coacting roller for said wheel journaled in said frame for cutting vegetables, a guard mounted lon said frame over the rear portion of said cutting wheel, a scraper, for scraping the cutting elements of said cutting wheel, mounted on the under side of said frame, and a single bolt ex i tending through said guard, frame and scraper at the junction of said rear end frame members and a nut on the threaded end of said bolt for securing said guard and scraper in position on said frame.
