The invention relates to windows or doors of carriages and concerns more particularly a mounting of pivoted windows which allows a suitable ventilation of the passages to be obtained without draught as well as a special control for opening the windows.
The arrangements comprise essentially two pivoted windows mounted in the window frame and of which a vertical pivot is placed in the neighbourhood of the front part of the windows. An appropriate control allows the two windows to be displaced simultaneously and in a parallel manner up to a certain angle of opening corresponding to an appropriate ventilation. The connection of the two windows with the support is made through the intermediary of a spring box such that once the opening of the windows obtained following the maximum angle for ventilation this opening can be increased until the windows are perpendicular to their frame by displacing them directly by hand against the action of the spring in the box; the windows returning afterwards under the action of their spring when they are freed so far as the angular position set by the control.
The invention equally relates to various practical details which will be more particularly described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents in perspective the windows and their control separated from the frame;
Figure 2 represents in cross section the windows in their frame in the closed position;
Figure 3 shows the windows fully opened by hand.
Referring to the drawing it is seen that the arrangements comprise two windows I, 2 mounted on axes 3, 4 located towards their front part and carried by the window frame 5.
The windows I and 2 are represented in Figure 3 in the position perpendicular to the window frame corresponding to the maximum opening by hand. The position indicated in broken lines in Figure 3 corresponds to the maximum opening given by the mechanical control. Also as can be seen from the drawing the windows in the closed position abut one against the other in a manner to assure an airtight joint at their point of abutment. In the arrangement shown by way of example the frame of the window 2 is provided with a rubber tongue 6 which is supported between the bare stop of the frame and the window I. The pivots 3 and 4 of the windows are integral at their lower end with a cap I of the drum 8; this drum 8 being itself mounted so that it can pivot about a shaft 9 disposed in the line of the pivot 4 of the window. The shaft 9 is integral with the lever l E3; the levers ID of the two window supports being joined by a connecting bar H on which the hand control acts as will be explained hereinafter. The nave 12 of the drum 8 is carried by the fixing plate l3 on the door and in this nave l2 the shaft 9 can turn, the shaft 9 at its upper part carrying a finger [4 which abuts against a stop I on the interior of the drum 8. A spiral spring I6 is fixed at one of its extremities to the nave l2 and at the other extremity in a slit I? of the drum 8.
The hand control acting on the connecting bar ll of the two windows is constituted by an end- 15 less screw I3 working in conjunction with a hellcal gear wheel [9 located in a box formed in two halves and fixed on the door. The screw is integral with a shaft 2| carrying the control handle 22 and the wheel I9 is mounted on the shaft I9 which carries a lever 23 connected to the connecting bar II by a pivot pin 24. It is seen immediately that by actuating the handle 22 the shafts 9 carrying the fingers I4 are displaced angularly which allows the operation on the drums 8 and their caps I by operating window support pivots 3 and 4. A lever 25 which acts as a stop is fixed on the shaft I9 of the helical gear wheel [9 and limits the displacement of this wheel and consequently an angular displacement of the fingers l4 and the support pivots 3 and 4 of the windows I and 2. This angular displacement is calculated in order to obtain a maximum opening corresponding to a good ventilation for the passengers. However, in order to be able to 5 effect signals with the arm by acting with the hand a supplementary opening movement may be given to the windows I and 2. If the windows are pushed outwardly directly by hand these Windows operate as well as the drums 8 by tightening the springs l6 which allows the Windows to be brought into the maximum open position. When the windows are freed they automatically return under the action of their springs into the position in which they have previously been set by the mechanical control.
It is quite evident that the mechanical control hereinbefore described has only been given by way of example and that it could be replaced by any other appropriate control mechanical, electrical or pneumatic; this control being nonreversible.
The mounting arrangement of the supporting shafts of the Windows with the spring box has likewise only been given by way of example. What characterizes the invention is the ventilation arrangement by means of pivoted windows the supporting pivots of which placed a little behind their front edges are angularly displaced simultaneously by an appropriate control, whilst these same pivots can receive independently one from the other a supplementary movement when they are displaced by hand against the action of a return spring which returns them to the position that they previously had before that supplementary opening. There is equally provided an arrangement which allows the windows to be locked in a closed position in order to prevent the windows being opened when the carriage is closed and left by itself. In the practical construction given by way of example this locking arrangement is constituted by a bar 26 provided at its extremities with buttons having a circular part 21 corresponding to the rectangular part 23 which in the locked position engages with the flat surfaces provided on the nave 29 of the cap 1. The rod 26 can slide in its support and be manipulated by a handle 30.
I claim:
1. A device for ventilation of passenger vehicles, comprising a door provided with two pivotable glass panes, two frames carrying said panes, two supports carried by said door, in each of which one of said frames may rotate about a vertical axis spaced from the front edge of each pane, two vertical axles for operating said frames,
two levers for turning said axles, a rod connecting said levers, means for moving said rod, comprising a handle, and resilient means connected with said frame adapted for returning the latter to the position allowed by the axles after they have been manually shifted from said position.
2. A device for ventilation of passenger vehicles comprising a door with two pivotable glass panes, two frames carrying said panes, two supports carried by said door, in each of which one of said frames may rotate about a vertical axis at a short distance from the front edge of each pane, two vertical axles adapted for operating said frames, two levers adapted for turning said axles, a rod connecting said levers, means for moving said rod comprising a handle, elastic means connected with said frames for returning them to the position allowed by the axles after they have been manually removed from said position, and means for preventing any rotation of said frames in their closed position.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which each vertical axle carries a finger contacting with a stop carried by the corresponding frame whereby the elastic means may connect the frame to said supports.
