Description

C. F. ZWICK HAND COVERING mm 2S, w36.
Filed Oct. 2l, 1935 Patented Apr. 28, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Indianapolis Glove Company, Indianapolis,
Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application October 21, 1935, Serial No. 45,855
1 Claim.
This invention relates to hand coverings, and more particularly to wrist extensions therefrom.
This invention has utility when incorporated with form-holding, or stiffening containing or embodying wrist coverings and the assembly thereof with palm or hand back portions of gloves and mittens.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front View of an embodiment of the invention incorporated in the gauntlet therefrom connected with the hand portion;
Fig. 2 is a rear or back View of the hand covering of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a detail view in open or blank form of the inner face of the completed gauntlet ready for attachment to the hand portion;
Fig. 4 is a View of the blank body holding form or stiffening portion for the gauntlet of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the blank outer element or facing; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View showing the hinge- Y like collapsing of the less-stiff Wrist portion shown of segment form.
Hand covering is shown provided with inner front side or palm I and hand back 2. Thumb 3 is adjacent hand covering side 4 and opposite thereto is side 5 adjacent the little finger 6. These sides 4, 5, are spacing means between the palm I and the back 2. In practice, the palm I, whether for glove or mitten, may have symmetry with the material of the general completed hand covering or such may be a facing, even of fabric or of leather. In the carrying out of the invention herein, such is especially adapted for use with socalled canvas or work gloves, and the back 2, whether one-piece or built up, is usually of soft material. The palm I also is generally of a material soft or flexible in use so that ready grasping of work may be had.
Stitching 1, continuous about the portion of the hand covering adjacent the base of the hand, assembles therewith a wrist portion which may be of more or less close wrist engagement, and may be of either the wrist band, cuil', gauntlet, or analogous type. Herein there is provided gauntlet of ply material with ply 8 of a form-holding fabric, providing a stiffening, assembled by stitching 1, 9, I0, II, with second ply I2 of this gauntlet. With gauntlet plies 8, I2, assembled at the hand covering by the sitching 'I, further stitching I3 from the side 5 closes the completed gauntlet.
At the assembling of the plies 8, I2, front and back arc-shaped cutouts: I4 from the stiffening ply 8 leave curved portions assembled by stitching I5 to the ply I2, thereby defining less stiflened or soft segments I6 of the ply I2. Stitching 1 between the sides 4, 5, thus provides cords for these segments I6. These segments I6 are fillers of hinge properties.
The more stiff section or ply 8 thus has, at side 4, a form-holding portion Il at approximately the region of the first joint below the thumb crotch or approximately at the base of the hand or the region where the hand joins the wrist. Likewise, remote from this portion Il, the stitching I3 extends to the side 5 and provides a formholding portion I8 on the side 5 of the hand covering to the hand proper in the region where the hand joins the wrist. These segments I6 are desirably `of a flexibility or softness less than that of the gauntlet more remote from the hand. The achievement is thus, in practice, a hinge region with no tendency to break, crush or detract from form-holding effectiveness of the wrist portion, and such wrist portion is definitely held along the arm from the hand by the portions I'I, I8.
In the rocking of the hand for the palm side to shift toward the forearm of the wearer, the segment I6 collapses in its greater medial extent by an arc fold I9 (Fig. 6) clearing the palm base intermediate the arc of the segment I4. The palm thus does not crowd on itself but holds its shape, and as the hand is straightened out into the line `of the arm or wrist, this segment I6 approaches the collapsed form.' Likewise, as there may be occasion for the wearer of the hand covering to place the hand on a surface with the arm upward therefrom or thus to grip an object where there is a direction for the palm transversely away from the inner side of they arm, the portion I6 in front is not a hard region interfering with the palm location, while there is an arc fold intermediate theextent of the rear portion I6 so that, even though the hand back 2 may be soft, there is no occasion to push the ngers of the glove off the hand due to the action of the formholding portion of the wrist as connected to the hand.
The portions I'I, I8, tend to determine the eX- tent of the gauntlet or wrist portion away from the hand as against collapse and with no detraction from ease tothe wearer of the hand covering.
This device, accordingly, contributes to convenience in use of and in placing and holding the hand covering in position. There is given greater permanence to the wrist portion, and accordingly, improved wearing qualities against breaking, crinkling or collapsing. The wrist shielding properties of the extension from the hand are preserved throughout the life of the hand covering,
and there is accordingly protection to the Wrist or garments which are to be shielded by such extension.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
A hand covering and a gauntlet therefor, said gauntlet being formed of an inner stiffening material and an outer flexible material, said stiffening material having its forward marginal edge spaced from the hand part at the front and back, the stiiening material at the thumb and little nger sides extending to the hand part and secured thereto, said last mentioned stiffening having a substantial Width providing means of sucient rigidity to maintain the gauntlet distended from the hand part and at the same time provide exibility at the Wrist.
