Definitions
- This invention relates to slug casting machines, such as linotype machines of the general organization represented in United States Letters Patent No. 436,532 to O. Mergenthaler, wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print, and then composed in line, the composed line transferred to the face of a mold, the mold filled with molten metal to form a slug or linotype against the matrices which produce the type characters thereon, and the matrices thereafter returned through distributing mechanism to the magazine from which they started.
- slug casting machines such as linotype machines of the general organization represented in United States Letters Patent No. 436,532 to O.
- Mergenthaler wherein circulating matrices are released from a magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print, and then composed in line, the composed line transferred to the face of a mold, the mold filled with molten metal to form a slug or linotype against
- the invention is directed to certain improvements which adapt these machines, when so desired, automatically to cast a predetermined plurality of duplicate type slugs and of blank slugs, such improvements being herein presented in the nature of an attachment which can be applied substantially to all commercial machines with practically little or no alteration.
- the means for presenting the composed line to the mold includes a transporter or so-called first elevator which first descends to position the line between the pair of clamping jaws for justification, and after the casting operation ascends to permit transfer of the line to the second elevator from which the matrices pass to the distributing mechanism.
- one of the clamping jaws is fixed (except for a limited movement to operate the customary pump stop), and the other (usually the left-hand jaw) adjustable to difierent positions to accord with the length of the mold slot or the length of the composed line in its justified condition, the position of such adjustable jaw being determined by an adjustable banking stop which however does not interfere with the free movement of the jaw up against the relatively fixed jaw in the absence of a matrix line between them.
- ' mechanism is provided operating automatically during predetermined cycles of operation of the machine to arrest the transporter in a position preventing transfer of the line therefrom so that the line is presented a plurality of times to the mold to cast a corresponding plurality of duplicate type slugs, and other mechanism provided likewise operating automatically during other predetermined cycles of operation of the machine for moving the left-hand jaw into contact with the right-hand jaw to close the mold completely at one side, so that blank slugs may be cast in the mold against the smooth side face of the lefthand jaw during such cycles, the operation of the machine throughout the casting of type slugs and blank slugs being rendered continuous by suitable automatic mechanism provided for the purpose.
- the invention also contemplates the provision of means for preventing the delivery of a second composed line to the transporter during the automatic casting of the duplicate type slugs and 10 blank slugs, and a galley associated with the casting mechanism formed with a plurality of compartments for holding the slugs delivered from the casting mechanism in separate columns, the galley also having mechanism associated there- 15 with for automatically delivering a type slug and a blank slug alternately into each of the compartments.
- the invention is of special utility in the production of blank slugs for use 20 in supporting the overhanging printing faces ofv L-shaped or T-shaped printing slugs (especially in the case of low slugs), such as are frequently employed in advertising and telephone book work, particularly where it is desired to cast a plurality of duplicate type slugs from each composed line, it being intended that the duplicate type slugs will be stacked in separate columns, and blank or filler slugs inserted alongside the bodies of the printing slugs and beneath the overhanging printing faces to support the latter.

- the matrices as they are released. from their storage magazine are delivered to and composed in line in an assembler A, which is then manually elevated to raise the composed line to a deliveryslide B which thereupon transfers the line-to the line transporteror first elevator C.
- the first elevator Upon receiving the line, the first elevatorjdes'cends to position the line between the left-hand clamping jaw v and the right-hand clampingjaw 12 (both mounted on and carried by the vise frame V) in front of the then horizontally positioned.
- the first elevator C in themeantime being raised to deliver the composed line to the matrix distributing devices'and finally coming to rest in its original or line receiving position; r i
- the various parts referred to are operated from the main drive shaft M of the ma chine which is caused to make one complete rotation for each cycle'of operation.
- Theshaft M is driven by an'electric motor, through the usual spring actuated clutch' (Fig.2) 'which'is thrown into action by a trip dog J carried by a cam J fast to the main shaft.
- Fig.2 spring actuated clutch'
- the dog J engages and depresses a stop lever V J which, when so depressed, acts through the usual connections to disengage the clutch.
- the dog J is moved laterall'y to clear the stoplever J as is donewhen thelever arm C swings to the left upon'the release of the delivery slide, the clutch actuating spring is allowed to engage the clutch and thus start the operation of the machine.
- the trip dogfJ ' is alsounder 'manual control, there being employed for this purpose a train of connections'leading to a control lever 7' at. the front of the machine, and'which comprises in part a. vertical sleeve J mountedto turn upon a fixed rod J and which is provided near its upper end with a radially extending arm J 5 arranged in position to engage the trip dog.
- This train of connections also includes a radially extending arm.
- control lever 7 by a toggle joint consisting of a.
- main shaft M is also provided with a plurality of cams which rotate once during each machine cycle of operation, any one of which may be employed to control the device herein described for render:
- control is effected from the'drive gear M (Fig. 2), but as stated before, it is not essential that this particular element be used, since any periodically rotating element on the main x shaft may be used for the purpose.
- the improved equipment is intended to adapt the machine automatically to
- the mechanism necessary for thecontrol of the elements involved in rendering the machine continuously active during the castingoftheduplicate type slugs and blank slugs and for locking the assembler A to prevent delivery of a second line to the first elevator C during the casting of such slugs are actuated from a single slide member S slidably mounted in a bracket S fixed on the vise frame V and actuated through means including a settable control device F actuated from a periodically rotating element of the machine, as for instance the driving gear M, which device may be set so as to cause the machine to pass through any predetermined number of cycles of operation without stopping.
- the mechanism for this purpose is similar to that disclosed in the Frolander Patent No. 1,971,399, dated August 28, 1934.
- the invention is not limited to the particular form or embodiment herein disclosed, but may be carried out in connection with a mold supported in other ways, by the use of mold closing means other than the clamping jaw, by the use of other arrangements for maintaining the machine continuously operative throughout a number of cycles of operation, and by using other mechanism for arresting the first elevator in a position to prevent transfer of a line therefrom, the essence of the invention residing broadly in the provision of means actuated automatically for casting a predetermined number of duplicate type slugs and a predetermined number of duplicate blank slugs while maintaining the machine in continuous operation.
- the slide S when in its rightmost position, operates the elements necessary for arresting the first elevator C in a position preventing transfer of a line therefrom, for looking the assembler A to prevent the delivery of a second line to the first elevator and for rendering the clutch control dog J inoperative so that the line may be again returned to the casting mechanism during subsequent machine cycles of operation for casting duplicate slugs; whereas the slide S, when in its leftmost position, renders such elements inactive, so that the line may be transferred from the first elevator for distribution in the usual manner, and a new composed line delivered thereto.
- the slide S is employed for the same purposes, except that the means for arresting the first elevator in a position to prevent line transfer is disengaged from the slide and operated from another control element, in order that the arresting device may be operated independently of the mechanism which renders the machine continuously operative throughout the casting of the duplicate type and blank slugs.
- the position of the slide S is determined by an adjustable control member F arranged to provide a large variety of adjustments, whereby the number of cycles through which it is desired to operate the machine continuously may be varied as desired, the adjustable member F being such that the slide S on the vise frame is maintained in its active or operative position for a predetermined number of machine cycles of operation as determined by the adjustment.
- the adjustable member F effects its control of the slide through a lever L pivoted substantially at its mid-point to a bracket L mounted on the machine frame, the
- lever being connected at its front end (Figs. 2, 3, and 11) to the slide S by means of a retractable pin L arranged at the end of the lever and projecting upwardly between the bifurcated arms S of a member S secured to the slide.
- the control member F (Fig. 2) is carried by a rear extension of the bracket L and is provided with a plurality of cam members F (twelve in the particular embodiment shown) carried by a plate F and which may be adjusted into and out of alignment with the rear end of the lever L.
- a ratchet wheel F Underlying the plate F is a ratchet wheel F adapted to be engaged by a stud M carried by the drive gear M the arrangement being such that upon each complete rotation of the drive gear, the control member F will be rotated through a distance equal to the pitch between two cam members.
- cam elements F are adjusted so that every fourth cam element is out of alignment with the lever and the three intervening cam elements in alignment therewith.
- unaligned cam F will be opposite the end of the lever L, in which position the slide S is in its leftmost or inactive position.
- the machine When the machine is started, as by raising the assembler elevator A to deliver a line to the first elevator C, the machine will pass through one cycle of operation during which the stud M carried by the drive gear M will actuate the cam plate F to bring the next cam opposite the end of the lever.
- the lever As this cam is in alignment with said lever, the lever is rotated and actuates the slide S to the right or active position, wherein the clutch control dog J is rendered inoperative to stop the machine.
- the clutch control dog J When the slide S is in'its rightmost position, the clutch control dog J is rendered inoperative by a train of connections including the usual manual devices provided for this purpose.
- the usual bracket which carries the manual control lever 7' is replaced by a bracket J having a forward extension, adjacent the outer end of which is pivoted a plate J
- this plate When the slide S is moved to the right, this plate is swung in a counterclockwise direction to actuate the rod J 8 forwardly through the medium of a tension spring J attached to said rod.
- the rotation of the plate J is effected from the slide S through a dog S carried at the right end of the slide.
- This dog a has a beveled end which contacts with a down- .on the plate, abutting against. the edge of the support bracket J this movement of the plate being caused by the-tension of the spring J
- the slide S is releasably held ineither of its adjusted positions by a spring pressed ball detent- S 'held by a plug threaded into the bracket S and engaging into either one of a pair of recesses S formed in the bottom of the slide for this purpose.
- thelassembler when the dog K is moved to inactive position out of alignment with said lug, thelassembler may be operated in the usual manner to delivera line which has been composed therein a to the first elevator; V 7
- the. dog K is mounted on 77 the ,upper'end of a rod K carried by a bracket J formed as an integral part of the bracket J? carrying the manual control lever 7.
- the rod K At its lower end the rod K 'has a radially extending arm K carrying an adjustable screw K at its outer end, adapted to abut'against the edgeof the rearwardly extending arm 7 of the manual control lever a.
- the means for limiting the upward movement of the first elevator C includes a stop N carriedby a sleeve N pivoted to a cross-bar'V of the vise frame, and rotatable into active position wherein it aligns with a projecting lug 0 located near the, lower end of the first elevator C.
- the stop N When the stop N is in active position, the first elevator will be arrested before reaching its uppermost position by the banking of the lug c against the stop N, thus preventing transfer of the line therefrom.
- the transfer of the line is prevented by means of a pin 0 carried by an arm 0 mounted on the left end of the line supporting member C the pin in the arrested position of the first elevator, resting in front of a projecting lug e on the end of the transfer slide E, which, of course, prevents the usual movement of the transfer slide to the ri ht to effect transfer of the line.
- the stop N is rotated to its inactive position (wherein it is out of alignment with the lug c)
- the first elevator will ascend to its normal line transfer position, wherein the pin comes to rest above the level of the projecting lug e, thus permitting the operation of the slide E in the usual manner to transfer the line.
- the stop N When it is desired to use the machine simply to recast duplicate slugs and not blank slugs, the stop N may be actuated from the slide S on the vise frame, as in the Frolander patent previously referred to, the means for connecting the stop to the slide including a bracket S secured at the left of the slide, and having a downwardly extending leg with a lower horizontal portion carrying an upstanding pin S which engages in a notch N provided at the upper end of a crank arm N arranged to actuate the sleeve N carrying the transporter arresting stop N.
- the stop N When the slide S is in its leftmost position, the stop N is out of alignment with the lug c on the transporter, whereas when the slide is moved to the right (in which position the machine is rendered continuously operative), the stop is actuated into alignment with the lug and will remain active so long as the slide is in its rightmost position, so that the number of duplicate slugs cast will correspond to the number of cycles during which the machine is in continuous operation.
- the transporter arresting stop N When it is desired to use the machine to cast two duplicate type slugs and two duplicate blank slugs, the transporter arresting stop N is disconnected from the slide S, and other mechanism brought into action for actuating the transporter arresting stop N, so that the stop may be rendered active during the first cycle of operation of a group to arrest the transporter C in a position to prevent transfer of the line therefrom and inactive during the second cycle of operation to permit transfer of the line so that blank slugs may be cast in succeeding cycles of operation.
- Such mechanism is actuated from a periodically operated element of the machine (in the embodiment illustrated the right-hand justification rod 0) and is independent of the slide S which, as previously stated, acts to maintain the machine in continuous operation throughout the casting of the type and blank slugs.
- the stop N is disconnected from the slide S, by raising the actuating crank arm N so that the notch N clears the pin S on the bracket S, the connection of the crank N with the stop N for this purpose including a collar N formed at the lower end of the crank and encircling the sleeve N which carries the stop, and a pin n threaded through the collar and projecting into a vertical slot n formed in the sleeve, the arrangement being such that the crank N may be moved vertically but not rotatably with respect to said sleeve (see Figs. 8 and 9).
- crank N is lowered and raised into and out of active position by a member P having bifurcated extensions p, straddling the sleeve, and provided at their ends with pins 39 extending radially inwardly and engaging in horizontal slots 11. cut in the collar N the slots n being of sufficient length to accommodate the active stroke of the crank N and the arresting stop N.
- the mechanism for operating the first elevator arresting stop N when blank slugs as well as dupli'cate type slugs are desired includes in part, a cam P for actuating the stop into engagement, a cam P f or actuating the stop out of engagement, and a sprocket P which together with a circular filler plate P for positioning the member P and a cam P for operating the mechanism for distribute ing slugs to the galley are ganged together (see Fig. and rotatably mounted on a vertical shaft P to which they are secured by a friction plate P screwed to the shaft at its upper end.
- the shaft P is carried by a bracket P formed with a vertical portion secured to a lug V on the vise frame, and having upper and lower horizontal extensions 12 p through which the shaft P extends.
- the shaft P has two positions of adjustment, as determined by a handle P pinned to the shaft at its lower end, said handle being provided in its upper face with upstanding projections 10* arranged to extend into corresponding recesses p in the lower face of a downwardly projecting shank P on the bracket P the upper position of the shaft being one wherein the adjacent faces of the handle P and shank P are in contact, and the lower position one wherein the shaft has been retracted downwardly and given a quarter turn to bring the upper faces of the projections p in contact with the lower face of the shank.
- the shaft is held in each of its adjusted positions by the tension of a coil spring P encircling the shaft and engaging between an abutment on the shaft and the upper face of the lower bracket portion P
- the cams P and P and the sprocket gear P are inactive; the crank N how. ever being in position (as determined by the member P) tobe operated from the slide S on the vise frame as previously described.
- the shaft P is adjusted to its upper position causing the member P to effect the disengagement of the crank N from the slide S; bringing the cam P into horizontal alignment with a cam plate N formed on the sleeve of the arresting stop N and which together cooperate to actuate said sto-printo active position wherein it aligns vertically with the lug c on the first elevator; bringing the cam P into alignment with an interponent P pivoted on a stud P mounted on the bracket P and which in turn is in alignment with a projecting lug'N formed on the sleeve of the arresting stop N, and
- the sprocket actuating lever P is pivotally connected at its rear end to a rearward extension P of the bracket P and in the instant embodiment of the invention is operated from the right-hand justification rod 0 (Fig. 3) the connections for this purpose including a horizontal push rod 0 (the one which operates the galley stacker) slidably mounted in a vise frame upright V and having a recess 0 cut in the rod to accommodate the lever P a pin and slot connection 0 for obtaining the pivotal movement of the lever from the linear movement of the push rod, and a roller 0 carried by the justification rod and which cooperates with a cam surface 0 formed at the left end of the push rod, the arrangement being such that for each downward stroke of the justification rod O, the push rod 0 is moved to the right, thus imparting sufiicient movement to the lever P to actuate the sprocketP through a distance of one tooth.
- a spring (not shown) is provided for returning the push rod to normal position.
- the cam P which actuates the first elevator arresting stop N into active position is provided with two diametrically opposed high portions 10 arranged to engage the cam segment N on the stop, and with two intermediate low portions 10 which clear the segment.
- the cam P which cooperates with the'interponent p for actuating the stop N out of active position is likewise provided with two high portions p and intermediate low portions 10 5, the high portions of the cams P and P being spaced angularly with respect to each other in order that thestop be rendered active and inactive at the proper time intervals.
- the operator starts the machine by sending in a line to the first elevator and'upon the first downward stroke of the right-hand justification rod 0 the sprocket P is moved through a distance of one tooth (see Fig. 6), moving the high portion p of cam P just clear of the interponent p and the cam P in a position to commence moving the arresting stop N into active position.
- the sprocket P is actuated through a distance of two more teeth
- the machine is maintained in continuous operation throughout four cycles. of, operation, during the second of which a duplicatetype slug is cast from the line which is returned to the mold.
- the sprocket P is again actuated through a distance of three teeth (before the first elevator starts upon its upward stroke) by the lever P the first two strokes of the lever actuating the cam P toa position wherein itclears the cam segment N on the stop (see Fig.
- the cam design is merely to insure the proper relation between the cams and the elements operated thereby, since, due to the arrangement of the lugs'p on the handle P of the shaft, the cams may be raised into active position at intervals of Although the shaft P is prevented from turning when the sprocket P is actuated, by the lugs p on the handle engaging inthe recesses :0 sufiicient friction is introducedby the plate P bearing against the cam P to prevent relative rotation between.
- mechanism is rendered automatically operative to close the mold d so that blank slugs may be cast.
- the mechanism for this pur- is rendered automatically operative to close the mold d so that blank slugs may be cast.
- Fig. 1 there is rotatably mounted on the vise frame V by means of a horizontal stud t carried by a bracket t screwed or otherwise secured to the vise frame, a Geneva stop motion device consisting of a Geneva disc T or plate journalled on the stud t.
- the discT is formed at four equi-distant points in its peripheral edge with radial slots t and fixed to the forward face of this disc is a cam plate T which is formed with a high portion for 180 and with a low portion for the remaining 180.
- This cam in the rotation of the disc T in the manner presently to be described, is adapted to engage a roller T mounted (eccentrically for purposes of adjustment) on the lower arm of a vertically arranged jaw actuating lever T pivoted between tract or move the jaw to the left when the low portion of the cam T is opposite the roller T,
- the high portion of the cam T by engaging the roller'T on the lower arm of the jaw actuating lever T will shift the jaw 27 to the right until it contacts with the right-hand jaw 11 and thus close the mold, so that molten metal injectedinto the mold slot by the usual metal pump, will form a blank slug therein.
- the range of action of the cam T is sufficient to cause the left-hand jaw to move the right-hand jaw slightly to the right so as to operate the customary pump stop and permit the casting operation to take place.
- the form of the cam T shown in Fig. 1 will, in four successive rotations of the mold wheel, maintain the mold open for two cycles of operation of the machine and close the mold in the two succeeding cycles of operation of the machine. As a result, the machine will operate to cast blank slugs in the two cycles succeeding the casting of the two duplicate type slugs.
- the first cycle of operation of the machine will result in the casting of a printing slug, the cam T being inactive before casting.
- the pin 01 located at the leading end of the mold
- the Geneva disc T will operate the Geneva disc T and impart a quarter turn to the cam T but as there will still be a low portion of the cam opposite the roller T the mold remains open during the second cycle of operation, thus permitting the casting of the second duplicate type slug in the manner previously described.
- the Geneva disc T is again operated and another quarter turn imparted to the cam T bringing the high portion thereof opposite the roller T and causing it to act upon the lever T to move the left-hand jaw 1) up against the right-hand jaw 11 to close the mold for the next casting operation (the composed line which was positioned between the two jaws for the previous casting operations having of course been lifted out of the jaws before the left-hand jaw is moved over).
- the left-hand jaw remains in its mold closing position during the third casting operation and also during the fourth casting operation, since the quarter turnimparted to the Geneva disc after the third casting operation also brings a high portion of the cam T opposite the end of the mold closing lever T and another blank slug will be cast during the fourth cycle.
- the Geneva disc T is again rotated through a quarter turn, allowing the spring T to return the jaw to its original retracted position, wherein the jaws will be in position to receive a new line for the next series of castings.
- the lefthand jaw is automatically adjusted to its mold closing position in the machine cycle immediately preceding, although subsequent to the slug casting operation which takes place in such preceding cycle, This allows ample time for the movements of the left-hand jaw to and from its mold closing position without interfering with the composed matrix lines as they are delivered to and later taken from casting position.
- the various mechanisms just described provide for the automatic casting of two duplicate type slugs and two blank slugs while maintaining the machine in continuous operation throughout the various casting operations.
- the two type slugs and two blank slugs which are cast during the four continuous cycles of operation of the machine are ejected from the mold in the usual manner and delivered to a galley R wherein they are stacked.
- the galley is formed with two compartments for holding the slugs in separate columns, and the type slugs and blank slugs delivered alternately into each of said compartments.
- the means for this purpose are in part similar to those disclosed in the Frolander patent previously referred to and include an inclined galley R, provided with a pair of compartments R R a chute R. for delivering the slugs ejected from the mold to the galley, and a vertically movable gate R arranged opposite the discharge end of the chute and between the two compartments of the galley, said gate being adapted when in its uppermost position to permit the slugs to be delivered for stacking in the lower compartment R and when in its lowermost position to arrest the slugs for stacking in the upper compartment R each compartment of the galley further being provided with the usual sliding plate R against which the slugs are stacked, and a stacker plate R formed on a single slug stacking lever R which serves for both compartments.
- the gate R is carried at the forward end of a fore-andaft lever B pivoted at its rear end to a pair of spaced lugs R carried by the mounting for the slide S. Spaced somewhat forwardly from the pivot, the lever B is provided with an upstanding lug 1 upon which there is slidably mounted an adjustable plate r slotted as at 1 to accommodate screws threaded into the lug for retaining the plate r in either of two adjusted positions.
- the plate r at its lower end is provided with a portion 1 bent to the right and extending downwardly at a slight angle, said portion being adapted for engagement by an upstanding pin s carried by the slide S, the arrangement being such that when the slide is in its leftmost position (see Fig. 12), the pin clears the plate and permits the gate to rest in its lowermost position, whereas when the slide is actuated to the right, the pin 5 engages the portion 1' of the plate to lift the lever R" and place the gate in its uppermost position.
- the plate 1 is adjusted to its upper position wherein the lower portion 1 clears the pin s (such course being rendered necessary as the slide is maintained in its rightmost position throughout a plurality of successive cycles, and consequently would hold the gate in its uppermost position throughout such cycles) and other mechanism rendered active, actuated from a periodically operating element of the machine, for alternatelyraising and, lowering-the gateRfi during successive cycles of operation of the machine.
- JSuch mechanism includes in part a lever W, pivoted between its ends on the vise frame V, andhaving its upper portion curving upwardly 'and'engaging at its upper'end beneath the lever R carrying the gate R and having its lower portion extending downwardly to engage at the front end of a tore-and-aft lever W pivoted at its center to the bracket P
- the lever W is in alignment with the cam P constituting one of i the elements ganged together on the shaft P and which thus makesone complete rotation for 7 every four cycles of operation of the machine.
- the cam P has two diametrically opposed high portions with intervening low portions, each portion taking up one quarter of theperiphery of the cam, and when theend of the lever W engages a low portion of the cam P the gate R rests in its lower postion wherein slugs are delivered and stacked in the upper'compartment R of the galley, whereas when the end of the lever W is engaged by a high portion of the cam P the 'lever W is pivoted counterclockwise, rocking the lever W, and raising the lever R, to lift the gate R to its upper position wherein the slugs are permitted to be delivered into the lower compartment R of the galley.
- the weight of the gate leverR' and the unbalanced weight of the lever W are sufiicient to maintain the end of the lever W in contact with the periphery of the cam P 'As a high portion of the cam P5 is active during alternate cycles of operation (say the first and third of a group of four) and a low portion active during different alternate cycles (say the second and fourth), it is apparent the slugs will be delivered alternately into different compartments of the galley; and Where two 'duplicate'type'slugs are cast inthe successive cycles of operation, such slugs will be'delivered into different compartments of the galley'and the same will be true of the blank slugs delivered in the next two successive cycles of operation.
- the slug leverR is of the usual type carried by an arm pivoted'to the vise frame, and having a projection R extending rearwardly for engage 'ment by the push member 0 which is actuated present invention the type slugs and blank slugs may be stacked automatically, thus obviating the manual labor of arranging the slugs by hand.
- Fig. 13 there is shown, by way of illustration, slugs Z having body portions Z and overhanging faces Z and blank slugs 2Q without such faces, the height of the blank slugs being such that they may be arranged along side of the body portions Z of the slugs Z and under the overhanging faces Z thereof.
- each type slug Z is delivered to the galley, it-is automatically 1 pushed by the stacker plate R up against the slug previously delivered.
- the next slug to be delivered to the same compartment will be a blank slug X,- which is pushed likewise by the stacker plate beneath the overhanging face Z of the slug Z previously delivered.
- the slugs are ready for use with out: further arranging. 7 I t
- the left-hand clamping jaw 11 is moved toward the companion jaw to close the mold. slot at the front, no matrix line being presented to the mold during this'pa'rticular cycle of operation.
- the device'cf the invention may be readily attached to the commercial linotype machine with little change, since all of the control mechanisms are arranged in compact units, it being necessary only to make the necessary drillings in the frame of the machine.
- cams P 1 actuating the first elevator arresting stop N, the number of teeth in the sprocket P the form of the cam T actuating the lefthand vise jaw o and the setting of the control device F for'determining the'number of cycles:
- number of cycles obtainable in a group may b varied to a larger extent.

2'7 Claims.
This invention relates to slug casting machines, such as linotype machines of the general organization represented in United States Letters Patent No. More particularly, the invention is directed to certain improvements which adapt these machines, when so desired, automatically to cast a predetermined plurality of duplicate type slugs and of blank slugs, such improvements being herein presented in the nature of an attachment which can be applied substantially to all commercial machines with practically little or no alteration.
As is well known in these machines, the means for presenting the composed line to the mold includes a transporter or so-called first elevator which first descends to position the line between the pair of clamping jaws for justification, and after the casting operation ascends to permit transfer of the line to the second elevator from which the matrices pass to the distributing mechanism. Also, as is well known, one of the clamping jaws is fixed (except for a limited movement to operate the customary pump stop), and the other (usually the left-hand jaw) adjustable to difierent positions to accord with the length of the mold slot or the length of the composed line in its justified condition, the position of such adjustable jaw being determined by an adjustable banking stop which however does not interfere with the free movement of the jaw up against the relatively fixed jaw in the absence of a matrix line between them.
In carrying out the present invention in its preferred embodiment (although the invention is not limited to such embodiment as will later appear),
' mechanism is provided operating automatically during predetermined cycles of operation of the machine to arrest the transporter in a position preventing transfer of the line therefrom so that the line is presented a plurality of times to the mold to cast a corresponding plurality of duplicate type slugs, and other mechanism provided likewise operating automatically during other predetermined cycles of operation of the machine for moving the left-hand jaw into contact with the right-hand jaw to close the mold completely at one side, so that blank slugs may be cast in the mold against the smooth side face of the lefthand jaw during such cycles, the operation of the machine throughout the casting of type slugs and blank slugs being rendered continuous by suitable automatic mechanism provided for the purpose.
The invention also contemplates the provision of means for preventing the delivery of a second composed line to the transporter during the automatic casting of the duplicate type slugs and 10 blank slugs, and a galley associated with the casting mechanism formed with a plurality of compartments for holding the slugs delivered from the casting mechanism in separate columns, the galley also having mechanism associated there- 15 with for automatically delivering a type slug and a blank slug alternately into each of the compartments.
Among other uses, the invention is of special utility in the production of blank slugs for use 20 in supporting the overhanging printing faces ofv L-shaped or T-shaped printing slugs (especially in the case of low slugs), such as are frequently employed in advertising and telephone book work, particularly where it is desired to cast a plurality of duplicate type slugs from each composed line, it being intended that the duplicate type slugs will be stacked in separate columns, and blank or filler slugs inserted alongside the bodies of the printing slugs and beneath the overhanging printing faces to support the latter.
The invention will be described in detail in the specification to follow, and the novel features will be set forth in the appended claims.

Upon receiving the line, the first elevatorjdes'cends to position the line between the left-hand clamping jaw v and the right-hand clampingjaw 12 (both mounted on and carried by the vise frame V) in front of the then horizontally positioned. slotted mcld d on' the rotatable mold wheel D (the latter having previously been given a one-quarter rotation to carry the mold in use from the ejecting to the casting position). The line is then justified, and the mold wheel advanced from the rear to pressjthe mold into contact with the matrix line and the two clamping jaws for the slug casting operation. After the slug has been cast, the mold wheel D is given a three-quarter rotation tocarry the mold d'from its horizontal casting position back to its vertical ejecting position (the latter being the 'normalposit'ion of rest of the mold), the slug ejected,
trimmed and delivered to the galley R; the first elevator C in themeantime being raised to deliver the composed line to the matrix distributing devices'and finally coming to rest in its original or line receiving position; r i
As is well understood inthe art, the various parts referred to, with the exception of the assembler A which isunder manual control, are operated from the main drive shaft M of the ma chine which is caused to make one complete rotation for each cycle'of operation. Theshaft M is driven by an'electric motor, through the usual spring actuated clutch' (Fig.2) 'which'is thrown into action by a trip dog J carried by a cam J fast to the main shaft. When theparts are'at rest, the dog J engages and depresses a stop lever V J which, when so depressed, acts through the usual connections to disengage the clutch. When however, the dog J is moved laterall'y to clear the stoplever J as is donewhen thelever arm C swings to the left upon'the release of the delivery slide, the clutch actuating spring is allowed to engage the clutch and thus start the operation of the machine.
"The trip dogfJ 'is alsounder 'manual control, there being employed for this purpose a train of connections'leading to a control lever 7' at. the front of the machine, and'which comprises in part a. vertical sleeve J mountedto turn upon a fixed rod J and which is provided near its upper end with a radially extending arm J 5 arranged in position to engage the trip dog. This train of connections also includesa radially extending arm.
link 7' and a rearwardly extending arm 7' of the control lever 7'. By this arrangement, when the control lever a is swung forwardly, the sleeve J is manually rotated, and the arm J caused to move the trip dog J clear of the stop lever J so that the clutch may be engaged in the manner above stated. The details of the clutch control mechanism are fully shown and described in the Rogers {Patent No. 661,386, and being so well known, they do not require any further description here. V
To complete the identification of the well known parts which function in the operation of the instant invention, it may be added that the main shaft M is also provided with a plurality of cams which rotate once during each machine cycle of operation, any one of which may be employed to control the device herein described for render:
ing the machine continuously operative for a plurality of cycles of operation. In the embodiment shown, the control is effected from the'drive gear M (Fig. 2), but as stated before, it is not essential that this particular element be used, since any periodically rotating element on the main x shaft may be used for the purpose.
The parts so far described and their normal mode of operation in casting single slugs, in themselves constitute no part of the present invention, and are or may be of any suitable construction, such for instance as discussed in the previously mentioned Letters Patent No. 436,532, or as presented in the commerciallinotype machine.
As already stated, the improved equipment is intended to adapt the machine automatically to,
cast a plurality of duplicate type slugs from each of the composed lines and thereafter a plurality of blank slugs or fillers, the machine being maincasting of both the type slugs and the blank slugs.
. To this end, there are employed means which may be called into'action when desired for actuation 1 against a manually adjustable stop on the vise frame and thus determines the length of the justified matrix line and is movable from said adjusted position up against the right-hand jaw 0 when no matrix line is'present) is utilized as the tained ,in continuous operation throughout the V i by a periodically moving element of the machine,
and during predetermined cycles of operation to v V prevent the first elevator C from ascending to its 7 uppermost position, thereby preventing the transmeans for closing the, mold by thus moving the 1 jaw, and such movement of the jaw is in the embodiment illustrated, effected by mechanism ac tuated automatically by the movement of the mold Wheel D, and in such manner that the jaw U will be moved to close the mold d. The particular mechanism illustrated for actuating the clamping. jaw to close the mold forms the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,955,621, dated April 17; 1934.
The mechanism necessary for thecontrol of the elements involved in rendering the machine continuously active during the castingoftheduplicate type slugs and blank slugs and for locking the assembler A to prevent delivery of a second line to the first elevator C during the casting of such slugs are actuated from a single slide member S slidably mounted in a bracket S fixed on the vise frame V and actuated through means including a settable control device F actuated from a periodically rotating element of the machine, as for instance the driving gear M, which device may be set so as to cause the machine to pass through any predetermined number of cycles of operation without stopping. The mechanism for this purpose is similar to that disclosed in the Frolander Patent No. 1,971,399, dated August 28, 1934.
It may be stated here however that the invention is not limited to the particular form or embodiment herein disclosed, but may be carried out in connection with a mold supported in other ways, by the use of mold closing means other than the clamping jaw, by the use of other arrangements for maintaining the machine continuously operative throughout a number of cycles of operation, and by using other mechanism for arresting the first elevator in a position to prevent transfer of a line therefrom, the essence of the invention residing broadly in the provision of means actuated automatically for casting a predetermined number of duplicate type slugs and a predetermined number of duplicate blank slugs while maintaining the machine in continuous operation.
As more fully described in the Frolander patent previously referred to, the slide S, when in its rightmost position, operates the elements necessary for arresting the first elevator C in a position preventing transfer of a line therefrom, for looking the assembler A to prevent the delivery of a second line to the first elevator and for rendering the clutch control dog J inoperative so that the line may be again returned to the casting mechanism during subsequent machine cycles of operation for casting duplicate slugs; whereas the slide S, when in its leftmost position, renders such elements inactive, so that the line may be transferred from the first elevator for distribution in the usual manner, and a new composed line delivered thereto.
According to the present invention, the slide S is employed for the same purposes, except that the means for arresting the first elevator in a position to prevent line transfer is disengaged from the slide and operated from another control element, in order that the arresting device may be operated independently of the mechanism which renders the machine continuously operative throughout the casting of the duplicate type and blank slugs.
The position of the slide S is determined by an adjustable control member F arranged to provide a large variety of adjustments, whereby the number of cycles through which it is desired to operate the machine continuously may be varied as desired, the adjustable member F being such that the slide S on the vise frame is maintained in its active or operative position for a predetermined number of machine cycles of operation as determined by the adjustment. The adjustable member F effects its control of the slide through a lever L pivoted substantially at its mid-point to a bracket L mounted on the machine frame, the
lever being connected at its front end (Figs.
Underlying the plate F is a ratchet wheel F adapted to be engaged by a stud M carried by the drive gear M the arrangement being such that upon each complete rotation of the drive gear, the control member F will be rotated through a distance equal to the pitch between two cam members. When the control member is rotated to bring an aligned cam F in operative relation with the end of the lever L, said lever will be actuated in a counterclockwise direction against the pull of a spring L anchored to the supporting bracket L to actuate the slide S to the right, in which position, as hereinbefore stated, the control elements operated by the slide are rendered active to effect the continuous operation of the machine.
If it is desired to maintain the machine in continuous operation throughout four complete cycles, as for instance when it is desired to cast automatically two duplicate type slugs and two duplicate blank slugs, the cam elements F are adjusted so that every fourth cam element is out of alignment with the lever and the three intervening cam elements in alignment therewith.
When the machine is in a position of rest, an
unaligned cam F will be opposite the end of the lever L, in which position the slide S is in its leftmost or inactive position. When the machine is started, as by raising the assembler elevator A to deliver a line to the first elevator C, the machine will pass through one cycle of operation during which the stud M carried by the drive gear M will actuate the cam plate F to bring the next cam opposite the end of the lever. As this cam is in alignment with said lever, the lever is rotated and actuates the slide S to the right or active position, wherein the clutch control dog J is rendered inoperative to stop the machine.
Another cycle of operation is thus inaugurated and as the next two cams F are adjusted into a position wherein they align with the end of the lever L, the machine will continue in operation for two more cycles (four in all), or until the next unaligned cam is brought opposite the end of the lever, whereupon the latter under the infiuence of the spring L will actuate the slide S to the left, permitting the clutch control dog J again to become operative to stop the machine. The construction of the adjustable control mem ber F is more fully described in the Frolander patent previously referred to.
When the slide S is in'its rightmost position, the clutch control dog J is rendered inoperative by a train of connections including the usual manual devices provided for this purpose. Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the usual bracket which carries the manual control lever 7' is replaced by a bracket J having a forward extension, adjacent the outer end of which is pivoted a plate J When the slide S is moved to the right, this plate is swung in a counterclockwise direction to actuate the rod J 8 forwardly through the medium of a tension spring J attached to said rod. When this occurs, the sleeve J of the clutch cont'rol mechanism is rotated (as is usual when the machine is started by themanual lever a), and the arm J caused to move the trip dog J clear of the stop lever J the clutch remaining engaged continuously as long as the slide S on the vise frame V remains in its rightmost position, or during a'plurality of cycles of operation'as determined by the setting of the control element F.
. As shown in'Fig. 3, the rotation of the plate J is effected from the slide S through a dog S carried at the right end of the slide. This dog a has a beveled end which contacts with a down- .on the plate, abutting against. the edge of the support bracket J this movement of the plate being caused by the-tension of the spring J It might be here stated that the slide S is releasably held ineither of its adjusted positions by a spring pressed ball detent- S 'held by a plug threaded into the bracket S and engaging into either one of a pair of recesses S formed in the bottom of the slide for this purpose.
' As stated before, it is desirable to prevent the delivery of a second composed line to the first elevator C during the casting of the duplicate type and blank slugs; This is accomplished by locking the assembler A in normal position during those predetermined cycles when the machine is operating continuously, means also being provided for releasing the assembler after the last cycle, to permit a new line to be delivered to the elevator. For this purpose there is provided a dog K adapted to, be swung into and out of vertical alignment with a projecting lug A on the assembler A. Thus, when the deg K is brought into active position overlying the lug A which operation is brought about by the movement of the slide S on the vise frame to the right, upward movement of the assembler is prevented;
whereas, when the dog K is moved to inactive position out of alignment with said lug, thelassembler may be operated in the usual manner to delivera line which has been composed therein a to the first elevator; V 7
As shown'in'Fig l, the. dog K is mounted on 77 the ,upper'end of a rod K carried by a bracket J formed as an integral part of the bracket J? carrying the manual control lever 7. At its lower end the rod K 'has a radially extending arm K carrying an adjustable screw K at its outer end, adapted to abut'against the edgeof the rearwardly extending arm 7 of the manual control lever a. When the rod J 8 is pulledforwardly by the operation of the slide S on the vise frame to accomplish the setting of the elements for rendering the operation of the machine continuous, the manual lever j, through its link connection? with the rod J is likewise caused to swing forwardly, the arm 7' of the lever 7' engaging the arm K to swing the dog K into active position in alignment with the lug A on the assembler A. The dog K will remain in active position as long as the slide S remains in its rightmost position, and thus will prevent the operator from sending a new line to V the first elevator during the casting of the duplicate type slugs and the blank slugs.
is actuated rearwardly in the usual manner by the clutch dog controlling mechanism, to return the manual control lever 9' to normal position. The operationof the control lever in this manner permits the dog K to be moved out of alignment with the'lug A on the assembler by a spring K pulling on the arm K and anchored to the bracket J If, for any reason,,the springK does-not withdraw the .dog to inactive position,
such action is positively effected by means of an upstanding arm K connectedat the front end of the spaceband lever rock shaft, this arm having of the last slug of the group, the spring-retained dog K will contact with the pin K", and posi tively push the assembler lock dog K out of vertical alignment'with the lug A on the assembler. In the event of an interference preventing the release of the assembler lock clog, the 7 dog K will yield against the tension of its'r'etaining spring, thus preventing breakage orother harmful resultsto the various parts.
In describing the arrangement for maintaining the machine in continuous operation throughout a plurality of cycles, a condition has been selected wherein the machine is operated continuously for four cycles without interruption. In
conformity therewith, there hasbeen selected, by' avay of illustration, a condition of operation wherein two duplicate type slugs and two duplicate blank slugs are castfrom the same mold during the four cycles of operation referred to. These cycles are inaugurated when the operator raises the assembler A wherein a line has been composed to permit the line to be transferred to the first elevator C which thereupon descends to present the line to the mold to cast a type slug The transporter C thereafter ascends in the usual .mann'enbut at this phase of the cycle means are cast), the first elevator arresting means are rendered inactive, permitting the elevator to ascend to its normal uppermost position for the transfer of the line; During the third'and fourth cycles of operation, the mold d is automatically closedby. the left-hand jaw n, so. that two blank slugs are cast during these cycles;
The means for limiting the upward movement of the first elevator C includes a stop N carriedby a sleeve N pivoted to a cross-bar'V of the vise frame, and rotatable into active position wherein it aligns with a projecting lug 0 located near the, lower end of the first elevator C. When the stop N is in active position, the first elevator will be arrested before reaching its uppermost position by the banking of the lug c against the stop N, thus preventing transfer of the line therefrom. The transfer of the line is prevented by means of a pin 0 carried by an arm 0 mounted on the left end of the line supporting member C the pin in the arrested position of the first elevator, resting in front of a projecting lug e on the end of the transfer slide E, which, of course, prevents the usual movement of the transfer slide to the ri ht to effect transfer of the line. When the stop N is rotated to its inactive position (wherein it is out of alignment with the lug c), the first elevator will ascend to its normal line transfer position, wherein the pin comes to rest above the level of the projecting lug e, thus permitting the operation of the slide E in the usual manner to transfer the line.
When it is desired to use the machine simply to recast duplicate slugs and not blank slugs, the stop N may be actuated from the slide S on the vise frame, as in the Frolander patent previously referred to, the means for connecting the stop to the slide including a bracket S secured at the left of the slide, and having a downwardly extending leg with a lower horizontal portion carrying an upstanding pin S which engages in a notch N provided at the upper end of a crank arm N arranged to actuate the sleeve N carrying the transporter arresting stop N. When the slide S is in its leftmost position, the stop N is out of alignment with the lug c on the transporter, whereas when the slide is moved to the right (in which position the machine is rendered continuously operative), the stop is actuated into alignment with the lug and will remain active so long as the slide is in its rightmost position, so that the number of duplicate slugs cast will correspond to the number of cycles during which the machine is in continuous operation.
When it is desired to use the machine to cast two duplicate type slugs and two duplicate blank slugs, the transporter arresting stop N is disconnected from the slide S, and other mechanism brought into action for actuating the transporter arresting stop N, so that the stop may be rendered active during the first cycle of operation of a group to arrest the transporter C in a position to prevent transfer of the line therefrom and inactive during the second cycle of operation to permit transfer of the line so that blank slugs may be cast in succeeding cycles of operation. Such mechanism is actuated from a periodically operated element of the machine (in the embodiment illustrated the right-hand justification rod 0) and is independent of the slide S which, as previously stated, acts to maintain the machine in continuous operation throughout the casting of the type and blank slugs.
The stop N is disconnected from the slide S, by raising the actuating crank arm N so that the notch N clears the pin S on the bracket S, the connection of the crank N with the stop N for this purpose including a collar N formed at the lower end of the crank and encircling the sleeve N which carries the stop, and a pin n threaded through the collar and projecting into a vertical slot n formed in the sleeve, the arrangement being such that the crank N may be moved vertically but not rotatably with respect to said sleeve (see Figs. 8 and 9).
The crank N is lowered and raised into and out of active position by a member P having bifurcated extensions p, straddling the sleeve, and provided at their ends with pins 39 extending radially inwardly and engaging in horizontal slots 11. cut in the collar N the slots n being of sufficient length to accommodate the active stroke of the crank N and the arresting stop N.
The mechanism for operating the first elevator arresting stop N when blank slugs as well as dupli'cate type slugs are desired, includes in part, a cam P for actuating the stop into engagement, a cam P f or actuating the stop out of engagement, and a sprocket P which together with a circular filler plate P for positioning the member P and a cam P for operating the mechanism for distribute ing slugs to the galley are ganged together (see Fig. and rotatably mounted on a vertical shaft P to which they are secured by a friction plate P screwed to the shaft at its upper end.
The shaft P is carried by a bracket P formed with a vertical portion secured to a lug V on the vise frame, and having upper and lower horizontal extensions 12 p through which the shaft P extends. The shaft P has two positions of adjustment, as determined by a handle P pinned to the shaft at its lower end, said handle being provided in its upper face with upstanding projections 10* arranged to extend into corresponding recesses p in the lower face of a downwardly projecting shank P on the bracket P the upper position of the shaft being one wherein the adjacent faces of the handle P and shank P are in contact, and the lower position one wherein the shaft has been retracted downwardly and given a quarter turn to bring the upper faces of the projections p in contact with the lower face of the shank. The shaft is held in each of its adjusted positions by the tension of a coil spring P encircling the shaft and engaging between an abutment on the shaft and the upper face of the lower bracket portion P When the shaft P is in its lower adjusted position (see Fig. 9), the cams P and P and the sprocket gear P are inactive; the crank N how. ever being in position (as determined by the member P) tobe operated from the slide S on the vise frame as previously described. When it is desired to cast duplicate type slugs and blank slugs, the shaft P is adjusted to its upper position causing the member P to effect the disengagement of the crank N from the slide S; bringing the cam P into horizontal alignment with a cam plate N formed on the sleeve of the arresting stop N and which together cooperate to actuate said sto-printo active position wherein it aligns vertically with the lug c on the first elevator; bringing the cam P into alignment with an interponent P pivoted on a stud P mounted on the bracket P and which in turn is in alignment with a projecting lug'N formed on the sleeve of the arresting stop N, and
which upon operation adjusts said stop to inactive.
position; and bringing the sprocket P into alignment with a pair of spring pressed pawls 12 10 the pawl p being pivotally mounted at the end of a periodically operated lever P which, upon each stroke, advances the sprocket in a clockwise direction through a distance of one tooth, and the pawl 11 pivotally mounted on a stud p threaded into the bracket P and pressed against the sprocket by a coil spring 12 anchored at its ends in the pawl and the bracket, respectively, said pawl 12 serving to prevent retrograde movement of the sprocket.
The sprocket actuating lever P is pivotally connected at its rear end to a rearward extension P of the bracket P and in the instant embodiment of the invention is operated from the right-hand justification rod 0 (Fig. A spring (not shown) is provided for returning the push rod to normal position.
Since, as is well known, the right-hand justificationrod O is depressed threetimesduring each cycle ofoperation of the machine, and as there are twelve teeth in the sprocket P the latter as well as the cam elements arranged to rotate in teg'rally therewith, will be actuated through one complete rotation for every four complete cycles of operation of the machine.
The cam P which actuates the first elevator arresting stop N into active position is provided with two diametrically opposed high portions 10 arranged to engage the cam segment N on the stop, and with two intermediate low portions 10 which clear the segment. The cam P which cooperates with the'interponent p for actuating the stop N out of active position is likewise provided with two high portions p and intermediate low portions 10 5, the high portions of the cams P and P being spaced angularly with respect to each other in order that thestop be rendered active and inactive at the proper time intervals.
In Fig. 5, the cams are shown in normal position just at the conclusion of a group of cycles of operation or after the casting of the last blank slug, the lever P being shown in solid linesjust prior to its return to normal position (as shown in dot and dash lines). 7 r
The operator starts the machine by sending in a line to the first elevator and'upon the first downward stroke of the right-hand justification rod 0 the sprocket P is moved through a distance of one tooth (see Fig. 6), moving the high portion p of cam P just clear of the interponent p and the cam P in a position to commence moving the arresting stop N into active position. Upon the next two downward strokes of the justification rod (both of. which are completed before the first elevator starts to ascend to its line transfer position), the sprocket P is actuated through a distance of two more teeth,
with the result that the high portion 10 of the cam P engages the edge of the cam-segment N on the arresting stop, actuating the latter into active position wherein the stop aligns with the lug c arrangedgat the lower end of the first elevator C, the cam P being brought to rest with its outer peripheral curved surface adjacent the correspondingly curved surface formed in the edge of the cam segment N In this way the stop is locked in its active position wherein it arrests the first elevator in advance of the line transfer position, so that the line may again be presented to the mold during the second casting cycle. Fig. '7 shows the positions of the cams after the sec- 0nd downward stroke of the right-hand justification rod. 7
As previously described, the machine is maintained in continuous operation throughout four cycles. of, operation, during the second of which a duplicatetype slug is cast from the line which is returned to the mold. During this second cycle of operations, the sprocket P is again actuated through a distance of three teeth (before the first elevator starts upon its upward stroke) by the lever P the first two strokes of the lever actuating the cam P toa position wherein itclears the cam segment N on the stop (see Fig. 4) and the cam P into a position wherein a high portion 7 plis ready to engage the interponent p Upon the third stroke of the lever P the cam P engages the interponent p which in turn engages V the projection N on the sleeve of the arresting stop N, to swing the latter out of active position, or in other words, out of vertical alignment with the lug c on the first elevator C. During the sec- 0nd cycle of operation, therefore, full ascent of the'first elevator is permitted, the line transferred in the usual manner, leaving the machine ready It might be here stated that as the cams P and V P each have two high portions arranged diametrically opposite, the first elevator arresting stop N will be actuated into active position during the third cycle of operation and out of active position during the fourth cycle of operation, but
as blank slugs are cast during these cycles it makes no diiference whether or not the first elevator is arrested before it reaches the line transfer position. The purpose of the cam design is merely to insure the proper relation between the cams and the elements operated thereby, since, due to the arrangement of the lugs'p on the handle P of the shaft, the cams may be raised into active position at intervals of Although the shaft P is prevented from turning when the sprocket P is actuated, by the lugs p on the handle engaging inthe recesses :0 sufiicient friction is introducedby the plate P bearing against the cam P to prevent relative rotation between.
the shaft and the gang of elements mounted.
thereon when the shaft is turned by hand. With 7 this arrangement, the operator is assured that the cams Will be in position to cause the arresting stop to operate in proper sequence whenever the cams and sprocket are adjusted to operative position.
As previously stated, during the last two cycles of operation, mechanism is rendered automatically operative to close the mold d so that blank slugs may be cast. The mechanism for this pur-,
pose is shown in Fig. 1 and is described more in detail in my Patent No. 1,955,621 previously re-' ferred to. As shown in Fig. 1, there is rotatably mounted on the vise frame V by means of a horizontal stud t carried by a bracket t screwed or otherwise secured to the vise frame, a Geneva stop motion device consisting of a Geneva disc T or plate journalled on the stud t. The discT is formed at four equi-distant points in its peripheral edge with radial slots t and fixed to the forward face of this disc is a cam plate T which is formed with a high portion for 180 and with a low portion for the remaining 180. This cam, in the rotation of the disc T in the manner presently to be described, is adapted to engage a roller T mounted (eccentrically for purposes of adjustment) on the lower arm of a vertically arranged jaw actuating lever T pivoted between tract or move the jaw to the left when the low portion of the cam T is opposite the roller T,
such movement of the jaw in its extreme retracted position being limited by a stop screw t on the vise frame in position to be engaged by the lower arm of the jaw actuating lever T The Geneva disc T is rotated by means by a pin d removably fastened to the mold wheel D and projecting forwardly from the same near its peripheral edge, said pinin the successive rotations of the mold wheel entering and leaving the slots t in the Geneva disc T in succession, and thereby imparting a quarter rotation to said Geneva disc at each complete rotation of the mold wheel D. In such rotary movements of the Geneva disc, the high portion of the cam T by engaging the roller'T on the lower arm of the jaw actuating lever T will shift the jaw 27 to the right until it contacts with the right-hand jaw 11 and thus close the mold, so that molten metal injectedinto the mold slot by the usual metal pump, will form a blank slug therein. Actually, the range of action of the cam T is sufficient to cause the left-hand jaw to move the right-hand jaw slightly to the right so as to operate the customary pump stop and permit the casting operation to take place.
The form of the cam T shown in Fig. Thus, starting with the parts in their position of rest, as shown in Fig. 1, the first cycle of operation of the machine will result in the casting of a printing slug, the cam T being inactive before casting. As the mold after casting is carried from its horizontal casting position to its vertical ejecting position, the pin 01 (located at the leading end of the mold) will operate the Geneva disc T and impart a quarter turn to the cam T but as there will still be a low portion of the cam opposite the roller T the mold remains open during the second cycle of operation, thus permitting the casting of the second duplicate type slug in the manner previously described. However, as the mold after casting the second type slug is carried from its horizontal casting position to its vertical ejecting position, the Geneva disc T is again operated and another quarter turn imparted to the cam T bringing the high portion thereof opposite the roller T and causing it to act upon the lever T to move the left-hand jaw 1) up against the right-hand jaw 11 to close the mold for the next casting operation (the composed line which was positioned between the two jaws for the previous casting operations having of course been lifted out of the jaws before the left-hand jaw is moved over). The left-hand jaw remains in its mold closing position during the third casting operation and also during the fourth casting operation, since the quarter turnimparted to the Geneva disc after the third casting operation also brings a high portion of the cam T opposite the end of the mold closing lever T and another blank slug will be cast during the fourth cycle. As the mold disc D is rotated to the slug ejecting position after the casting of the fourth slug (the second blank slug), the Geneva disc T is again rotated through a quarter turn, allowing the spring T to return the jaw to its original retracted position, wherein the jaws will be in position to receive a new line for the next series of castings. It will be noted that while the casting of a blank slug takes place in one cycle of operation of the machine, the lefthand jaw is automatically adjusted to its mold closing position in the machine cycle immediately preceding, although subsequent to the slug casting operation which takes place in such preceding cycle, This allows ample time for the movements of the left-hand jaw to and from its mold closing position without interfering with the composed matrix lines as they are delivered to and later taken from casting position.
The various mechanisms just described provide for the automatic casting of two duplicate type slugs and two blank slugs while maintaining the machine in continuous operation throughout the various casting operations.
The two type slugs and two blank slugs which are cast during the four continuous cycles of operation of the machine are ejected from the mold in the usual manner and delivered to a galley R wherein they are stacked. In accordance with the invention, the galley is formed with two compartments for holding the slugs in separate columns, and the type slugs and blank slugs delivered alternately into each of said compartments.
The means for this purpose are in part similar to those disclosed in the Frolander patent previously referred to and include an inclined galley R, provided with a pair of compartments R R a chute R. for delivering the slugs ejected from the mold to the galley, and a vertically movable gate R arranged opposite the discharge end of the chute and between the two compartments of the galley, said gate being adapted when in its uppermost position to permit the slugs to be delivered for stacking in the lower compartment R and when in its lowermost position to arrest the slugs for stacking in the upper compartment R each compartment of the galley further being provided with the usual sliding plate R against which the slugs are stacked, and a stacker plate R formed on a single slug stacking lever R which serves for both compartments. The gate R is carried at the forward end of a fore-andaft lever B pivoted at its rear end to a pair of spaced lugs R carried by the mounting for the slide S. Spaced somewhat forwardly from the pivot, the lever B is provided with an upstanding lug 1 upon which there is slidably mounted an adjustable plate r slotted as at 1 to accommodate screws threaded into the lug for retaining the plate r in either of two adjusted positions. The plate r at its lower end is provided with a portion 1 bent to the right and extending downwardly at a slight angle, said portion being adapted for engagement by an upstanding pin s carried by the slide S, the arrangement being such that when the slide is in its leftmost position (see Fig. 12), the pin clears the plate and permits the gate to rest in its lowermost position, whereas when the slide is actuated to the right, the pin 5 engages the portion 1' of the plate to lift the lever R" and place the gate in its uppermost position.
In the present arrangement, however, where it is desired to deliver the slugs cast in a plurality of successive cycles of operation alternately into the different compartments of the galley, the plate 1 is adjusted to its upper position wherein the lower portion 1 clears the pin s (such course being rendered necessary as the slide is maintained in its rightmost position throughout a plurality of successive cycles, and consequently would hold the gate in its uppermost position throughout such cycles) and other mechanism rendered active, actuated from a periodically operating element of the machine, for alternatelyraising and, lowering-the gateRfi during successive cycles of operation of the machine.
JSuch mechanism includes in part a lever W, pivoted between its ends on the vise frame V, andhaving its upper portion curving upwardly 'and'engaging at its upper'end beneath the lever R carrying the gate R and having its lower portion extending downwardly to engage at the front end of a tore-and-aft lever W pivoted at its center to the bracket P When the shaft P carrying the arresting stop actuating cams P P is in its raised or active position, the lever W is in alignment with the cam P constituting one of i the elements ganged together on the shaft P and which thus makesone complete rotation for 7 every four cycles of operation of the machine. The cam P has two diametrically opposed high portions with intervening low portions, each portion taking up one quarter of theperiphery of the cam, and when theend of the lever W engages a low portion of the cam P the gate R rests in its lower postion wherein slugs are delivered and stacked in the upper'compartment R of the galley, whereas when the end of the lever W is engaged by a high portion of the cam P the 'lever W is pivoted counterclockwise, rocking the lever W, and raising the lever R, to lift the gate R to its upper position wherein the slugs are permitted to be delivered into the lower compartment R of the galley. The weight of the gate leverR' and the unbalanced weight of the lever W are sufiicient to maintain the end of the lever W in contact with the periphery of the cam P 'As a high portion of the cam P5 is active during alternate cycles of operation (say the first and third of a group of four) and a low portion active during different alternate cycles (say the second and fourth), it is apparent the slugs will be delivered alternately into different compartments of the galley; and Where two 'duplicate'type'slugs are cast inthe successive cycles of operation, such slugs will be'delivered into different compartments of the galley'and the same will be true of the blank slugs delivered in the next two successive cycles of operation.
The slug leverR is of the usual type carried by an arm pivoted'to the vise frame, and having a projection R extending rearwardly for engage 'ment by the push member 0 which is actuated present invention the type slugs and blank slugs may be stacked automatically, thus obviating the manual labor of arranging the slugs by hand. In Fig. 13, there is shown, by way of illustration, slugs Z having body portions Z and overhanging faces Z and blank slugs 2Q without such faces, the height of the blank slugs being such that they may be arranged along side of the body portions Z of the slugs Z and under the overhanging faces Z thereof. As each type slug Z is delivered to the galley, it-is automatically 1 pushed by the stacker plate R up against the slug previously delivered. The next slug to be delivered to the same compartment will be a blank slug X,- which is pushed likewise by the stacker plate beneath the overhanging face Z of the slug Z previously delivered. When a compartment is filled, the slugs are ready for use with out: further arranging. 7 I t As before explainedfln casting the blank slugs X, the left-hand clamping jaw 11 is moved toward the companion jaw to close the mold. slot at the front, no matrix line being presented to the mold during this'pa'rticular cycle of operation. In casting the overhanging slugs Z, on the other hand, a composed matrix line is presented to the mold in the regular way and the matrices are formed with deep routing notches which communicate with the meld slot and which form the overhanging type carrying portions of the slugs. This practice of casting overhanging slug-s is well known and, for purposes "of illustration, reference may be had to the Reade Patent No. 1,218,803, dated March 13, 1917.
It will be'apparent from the foregoing description. that the device'cf the invention may be readily attached to the commercial linotype machine with little change, since all of the control mechanisms are arranged in compact units, it being necessary only to make the necessary drillings in the frame of the machine.
It will be further understood that the invention is not limited to the alternate casting of two type slugs and two blank slugs, since any J desired number of each form of slug maybe produced, merely by changing the form of. the
cams P 1 actuating the first elevator arresting stop N, the number of teeth in the sprocket P the form of the cam T actuating the lefthand vise jaw o and the setting of the control device F for'determining the'number of cycles:
number of cycles obtainable in a group may b varied to a larger extent. a a
In the accompanying drawings the invention has been shown merely by way of example and in preferred form, and obviously many variations. and modifications may be made therein which' will still be comprised Within its spirit. It isto be understood, therefore, that'the invention is not limited to any specific form or embodiment,
except'insofar as such limitations are specified in the appended claims.
