WITN E55 Patented Apr. 21, 1936 UNITED STATES ATENT oFFi-r '7 Claims.
The invention relates to-a paper dispenser and more especially to roll paper dispensers.
The primary object of theinvention is the provision ofa dispenser of this character, wherein a 1. determined length of paper will be delivered and such length severed from the roll of paper as 4 I and automatically folded into compact form for delivery to a user.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a dispenser of this character, which is simple in construction, tho-roughly reliable and I efficient in its operation, convenient for handling,
adapted for hanging upon a wall or other support,
strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features. of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the dispenser constructed in accordance with the invention with the casing shown in section on the line l-l' of Figure 2.
Figure 2 isa sectional view taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1 with certain parts shown in elevation.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing the parts in reverse position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the ratchet and spring of the driving mechanism of the dispenser.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 4- looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing in detail the cutting knife or blade. Figures 7, 8, 9 and lO are fragmentary exploded detailed views illustrating the steps of feed of the paper and the final cutting of the same.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the dispenser comprises a box-like body I preferably made from metal although it may be made from any other material'meeting the requirements and this body at its open back is closed by a hanger or bracket H which is suitably secured to a wall or other support so that the body can be hung therefrom, the bracket being attached to the body through removable fasteners l2 which are separably engaged both with the body and the bracket. Arranged interiorly of the body and supported at one side thereof is a housing I 3 to which is fastened a roll arbor M for supporting the tubular coil l-of a roll of strip paper it, for example toilet paper. This roll I6 is introduced into the body It through a door opening in one side of said body, the door opening being closed bya swinging door I! carrying a suitable latch or look I8 so that it may be fastened in its closed position. The arbor M is located in the uppermost portion of the body I0.
Beneath the roll l6 and located approximately at the longitudinal center of the body Ii] are the feed rollers l9 and 20, respectively, the latter being a guide roller while the roller I9 is a positively driven roller and their axles 2| are suitably journaled in the housing 1 3 and a second housing 22 within said body Hi. The axle; 2| of the roller I9 carries a gear 23 confined within the housing 93 and meshing with a driving gear 24, this being also within the housing I3-and is loose upon the hub 25 of a ratchet gear 26, its teeth 2'! having coacting therewith a ratchet dog 28 pivoted at 29 to the gear 24 and spring tensioned at 39. This gear 26 has its hub 25 keyed or otherwise fixed to a driving shaft 3| extended exteriorly of the body it] and carrying a hand crank 32 for manual control thereof.
The shaft 3! has fixed thereto a ratchet segment 33, this with the ratchet gear 26 being confined within the housing l3 and coacting with the segment 33 is a pivotal back check 34 which requires the segment 33 to be turnedin one direction to the fullest extent'thereof before the said segment 33' can be returned to normal or original position. The check 34 is pivoted to the: body 0.
Pinned to the shaft 3| is a coiled clock; spring 35 which is anchored at 36 and. this spring automatically effects the return of the segment 33 to original or'starting position after a complete stroke movement thereof is had. The return movement of the segment 33 is inactive on the gear 25- through the ratchet action of the ratchet gear 26 and dog 28 cooperating with each other.
Immediately beneath the feed rollers l9 and 2B is a horizontally swinging cutting blade or knife 3? which has a sweep across the path of feed of the paper of the roll I6 when passing between the feed rollers 59 and 20. The blade or knife 37 is pivoted at 38 and'the other free end'thereof protrudes into the path of a striker or actuator extension 39 on the segment 33 so that the blade or knife 31 is operated by this striker 39 to sever the paper of the roll l6 when unwound therefrom of a determined length. The blade or knife 31 is returned to inactive position by a spring 40 after tripping the striker 39.
Below the knife or blade 31 within the body I!) is a substantially U-shaped folding frame 4|, the closed side thereof at the center is formed with a hub 42 fitting a stud shaft 43 suitably journaled in the housing 22 and body N). This shaft has fixed thereto a gear 44 confined within the housing 22 and meshing with a gear 45 which is in mesh with a gear 46 on the axle 2| of the roller l9, these gears 45 and 46 being confined within the housing 22. As the paper is fed by the rollers l9 and 26 in a downward direction from the roll H the frame 4| folds the paper thereon until a predetermined length of paper has been folded whence the knife or blade 31 is automatically operated to sever this length of paper. The open side of the frame 4| confronts a window 41 so that access may be had to the folded length of paper for the extraction thereof through the window ll by a user of the dispenser.
The steps of feed of the paper when unwound from the roll l6 by the rollers l9 and 20 are clearly demonstrated in Figures '7 to 10, inclusive, of the drawings.
The dispenser is manually operated by the crank handle 32 and on a complete stroke of the segment 33 a determined length of paper will be unwound from the roll l6 and severed by the knife or blade 31 and also folded or wrapped upon the frame 4| whence it will be in a condition to be removed from the dispenser as clearly exhibited in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The spring 35 functions to return the segment 33 to normal position or starting position and the check 34 prevents the return of the segment to this starting or original position excepting when a complete operating stroke has been had by the segment.
