This application July 1-0, 1935, Serial No. 30,955 V 1 Claim. 7 (Cl. 292-169) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in door stops and is the same invention as that constituting the subject of my abandoned application filed April 4, 1933, Serial No. 664,422, the invention has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which said door stop may be conveniently and expeditiously rendered operative or inoperative.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a door stop of the character set forth embodying novel floor engaging means through the medium ofwhich a door may be securely held in any desired position without scratching or otherwise marring the floor.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door stop of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:--
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of a door stop constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section through the door stop, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of the cam which constitutes an important element of the door stop.
Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of the plunger.
Figure 7 is a detail view in perspective of the pin which connects the plunger to the cam.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic vertical cylinder I which is open at its bottom and closed at its top, as at 2. Formed integrally with the cylinder I at vertically spaced points are legs 3 which terminate in feet 4 having tapered openings 5 therein for the accommodation of screws for securing the door stop in position on a door.
Mounted for reciprocation in the cylinder I and projecting below the lower end'of said -cylinder is a plunger 6 having secured on its lower end a floor engaging vacuum or suction cup I. Rising from the plunger 6 is a substantially square rod 8 which extends slidably through a corresponding shaped opening in the upper end 2 of the cylinder I. A coil spring 9 encircles the rod 8 in the cylinder I and has one end engaged with the upper end 2 of said cylinder and its other end engaged with the plunger 6 for yieldably urging said plunger downwardly.
The reference numeral I0 designates a cam through the medium of which the plunger 6 is raised to and retained in inoperative position When desired against the tension of the coil spring 9. The cam I0 includes oppositely inclined, substantially flat face portions II which are connected by a curved face portion I2. As best seen in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawings, the cam I0 is substantially V-shaped. The cam I8 is operatively engaged with the upper end 2 of the cylinder I and has formed therein, adjacent one of the side portions II, a slot I3 which extends substantially at right angles with respect to said adjacent side portion II. The reference numeral I4 designates a headed pin which is operable in the slot I3, said pin including a reduced end portion I5 which extends through an opening .I 6 provided therefor in the upper end portion of the rod 8 for operatively connecting the cam I0 to the plunger. A winged retaining nut is threaded on the portion I5 of the pin I4. Projecting from opposite sides of the upper portion of the cam ID are inclined operating levers I8, said levers being integral with the cam.
Briefly, the operation of the door stop is as follows:
When the cam is in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, the plunger 6 is in lowered or operative position, being yieldingly urged into engagement with the floor by the coil spring 9. In this position, it will be noted that the face portion I I to which the slot I3 is adjacent is engaged on the upper end of the cylinder I. It will also be noted that, in this position, one of the levers I8 is adjacent the cylinder I and the other lever I8 is swung upwardly. When it is desired to raise the plunger 6 against the tension of the coil spring 9 to release the door, the cam I0 is rocked on the upper end 2 of the cylinder I to engage the face portion I I which is remote from the slot I3 with said cylinder I, thus drawing the plunger upwardly and retaining said plunger in elevated position. The construction of the cam ID and the arrangement of the slot l3 therein are such that a pronounced snap action takes place as the cam swings past dead center when raising or lowering the plunger. Of course, when the plunger 6 is in operative position, the vacuum or suction cup 1, which is preferably of rubber, effectively engages the floor to prevent slippage.
Projecting forwardly from the cylinder I is a boss l9 having a rubber bumper 20 secured thereon, as at 2!. As will be apparent, the bumper 20 is to prevent damage to base boards and also possible damage to the door stop when the door is swung to open position.
It is believed that the many advantages of a door stop constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A door stop comprising a cylinder, means for mounting the cylinder on a door, a plunger slidable in the cylinder, a rod connected to the plunger and projecting longitudinally from the cylinder, resilient means yieldingly urging the plunger toward operative position, a substantially V- shaped rockable cam operatively'engaged with the cylinder, said cam including oppositely inclined substantially flat face portions and having'a slot therein adjacent one of said face por- '-tions and extending substantially at right angles to said one face portion, a pin operable in the slot and engaged in the rod for operatively connecting the cam to said rod and a cup shaped resilient member secured to said plunger and adapted to frictionally engage the floor in the plunger.
