Patented Apr. 14, 1936 UNITE STATES ArEN OFFICE Thisinventionrelates to improvements in dollsand has particular reference'to a head mounting therefor, the present application being a continuation in part of myco-pending. application, Serial Number 658,473,.fi1ed February 25; 1933.

The above and other objects will appear more clearly; from the; following detailed description when taken inconnection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.

Referring particularly to Figure 1, Ill indicates the bodyzof the doll which may be of-rubber or any. other suitable material, and II designates a neck pie ce which may also be of rubber and which is disposed within theneck portion of the body; It toefiectively close: and support said portion. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the body, head and neck-piece may be of the same construction as shown in Figure 1 with the exception that the abutment 23 Within the recess It in the neck-piece II is shortened. The connecting element, generally indicated by the numeral 24, for joining the head with the body is so constructed, in the present embodiment, that it may be detachably connected to the head and neck-piece of the body to facilitate the mounting operation of said head and its removal in the event that it should be desired to replace or repair said head. As shown, the connecting member 24 comprises two strips 25 riveted or otherwise secured in abutting relation along the intermediate portions and pro-' vided at their lower ends with diverging resilient arms 26 substantially similar to the arms 2!, the extremities 21 of said arms being bent outwardly so as to engage in the grooves [8 formed in the recess I6 of the neck-piece. In order that the head I2 is Figure 3 may be detachably joined to the connecting member 24, the upper resilient ends of the strips 25 terminate in diverging fingers 28 which form an entrant slot for the rod 20 to guide the same into superposed recesses 29 both of which are in communication with said slot, said recesses being formed by bowing the strips 25 at opposed points. When positioning the head upon the body, the connecting member 24 is inserted into the opening in said head until the rod 20 is engaged between the fingers 28 whereupon continued movement of the head toward its position on the neck portion of the body It will cause said rod to spread apart the resilient fingers 28 until the rod 20 has passed the inner ends of said fingers and entered the uppermost recess 29. At this point, should the fit between the head I 2 and body Ill be insufliciently snug, the head may then be forced further downwardly upon the body until the rod 20 enters the lower recess 29 of the connecting member, whereupon a sufficiently close engagement between the head and body should be obtained. It will be apparent from this construction that the head l2 may be easily and quickly mounted in proper position upon the body In and removed therefrom whenever desired without using tools to perform these operations. To properly center the connecting member 24 with respect to the attaching rod 20, the latter may be crimped at its center portion as indicated at 30 with the crimped portions disposed on opposite sides of the bowed parts of the strips 25 which form the recesses 29.
The body l0, neck-piece H and head l2 of Figure 5 are identical in construction to the equivalent elements shown in Figure 1. The connecting member 3| illustrated in Figure 5 of Figure 3 and having their intermediate portions secured together in abutting relation in a like manner. The resilient lower ends of the strips are diverged to form the arms 33 which are engaged in the neck-piece in the same manner as described in connection with the arms 2|. The upper ends of the strips 32 are bowed as indicated at 34 to form a recess for receiving the rod 20 and the extremities of said strips, from said bowed portions, diverge in a diagonal direction relative to the intermediate portions of said strips to form the fingers 35 which define an entrant slot communicating with the recess made by said bowed portions 34. With the fingers 35 thus inclined with respect to the remainder of the strips, it will be understood that when mounting the head I 2 is position the same will have to be tilted to engage the rod 20 between said fingers, and it will be further understood that after the rod 20 is in position within the recess formed by the bowed portions 34 the latter will, due to their disposition relative to the rod 20, resist, to a greater extent than the bowed portions of the member 24 of Figure 3, a direct outward pull upon the head l2 which would tend to dislodge said head from the body.
What is claimed is:
1. In a doll, a body, a head mounted thereon for turning movement, a neck-piece fitted into said body and having an abutment, a retaining member connecting said head with said neckpiece and turnable with said head, said retaining member having means normally spaced from said abutment and engageable therewith, only when said head is turned, to limit the turning movement.
2. In a doll, a body, a neck piece fitting in said body and having a recess therein provided with a lateral channel at its inner end, a head turnable on said body, a connecting. member joining said head with said neck-piece and including resilient arms extending into said recess and engageable with a wall of said channel, and an abutment in said recess against which said arms contact to limit the turning movement of said head.
3. In a doll, a body, a head turnable thereon, an abutment, means detachably connected to both the body and head for releasably joining the same together, and means spaced from said abutment when the head is straight on said body and movable into engagement with said abutment when said head is turned to limit the turning movement.
4. In a doll, a body, a head turnable thereon, attaching elements in said body and head, and a connecting element having bifurcated portions at each end thereof releasably engageable with said attaching elements, one of said bifurcated portions comprising divergent fingers having a recess at the inner ends thereof for receiving one of said attaching elements.
5. In a doll, a body, a head, an attaching member in said head, a neck-piece within said body and having a recess therein, a connecting member provided at one end with resilient arms engageable in said recess to support said member in position on the neck-piece, and being fur-, ther provided at its other end with divergent contractile fingers and a recess at the inner ends thereof, said'fingers constituting an entrant slot for guiding said attaching member into the latter recess and yieldably retaining the same there- :11.
6. In a doll, a body, a neck-piece fitting in said body and having a recess therein provided with grooves at its inner end, an attaching member in said head, a connecting member joining said head with said neck-piece and provided at one end with resilient arms insertable in the recess in said neck-piece and having extremities engageable in the grooves in said recess, said connecting member being further provided at its other end with divergent contractile fingers and a recess at the inner ends thereof, said fingers constituting an entrant slot for guiding said attaching member into the latter recess and yieldably retaining the same therein, and an abutment in the recess in said neck-piece against which said resilient arms contact to limit the turning movement of said head relative to said body.
7. In a doll, a neck piece, a head mounted thereon for turning movement, said neck piece being adapted to be releasably joined to a body, an abutment on one of said elements, retaining means connecting said neck piece and head, a part on said connecting means spaced from said abutment, said part and abutment being in the same path of travel and engageable with each other, when the head is turned, to prevent the turning movement of the head beyond the plane of said parts when so engaged.
