(01. 40-126) This invention relates to apparatus for displaying a group of merchandise of different kinds and classes, and preferably the products of a single manufacturer or distributor in the form of what may be termed a shop; and the object of the invention is to provide a display of the class described consisting of a plurality of parts, members or sections which may be quickly coupled and uncoupled one with respect to the other in assembling the unit or in disassembling the same, thus facilitating shipment, transportation as well as packing and storage thereof; a further object being to provide an apparatus of the class described incorporating a rough structure giving the representation of a store or shop and further to the provision of means Within boundary walls of the apparatus and thereon for supporting and displaying merchandise of various kinds and classes; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in an apparatus of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicientin use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a side and sectional view of a display apparatus made according to my invention.

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 with part of the construction broken away.

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View of part of the construction shown in Fig. 2.

Heretofore, it has been the custom or practice in displaying merchandise of various kinds and classes or a group of merchandise from one manufacturer, to arrange the same on a floor, counter, shelving or the like in the sale of such goods by or through the agency of various retail outlets, such for example as department stores.

It is the principal object of my invention to provide a unitary display apparatus which may be arranged upon the floor and which will occupy a minimum amount of floor space and in which a number of items from a single manu- 'facturer or distributor can be displayed for selling purposes in such a manner as to represent the unit as a complete shop, thus putting 5 within the store a miniature display shop for the products in question.

In the accompanying drawings, I have indicated one method of carrying my invention into effect in which the display apparatus or shop consists of similar end sections 6, 6a, arranged upon a floor or base section 1. The upper portions of the sections 6, 6a are coupled together by strips 8, 8a upon which and the end sections 6, 6a, are supported two similar roof sections 9, Ba. hinged together as indicated at I 0. At I I, I have shown a partition wall mounted upon the floor section I and coupled with the end sections 6, 6a. In the construction shown, the partition is disposed at one side of the longitudinal center of the display unit or apparatus to provide a deeper display at one side thereof than at the other, as will be apparent.

In the construction shown, each end section 6, 6a is in the form of a closet having a door I2 on the outer surface thereof controlling admission to the closet, to provide means for displaying articles of merchandise either within the closet or upon the inner surface of the door. At this time, it will be understood, however, that the construction .of the end sections in the form of closets is not essential where the particular display of merchandise does not require the use thereof. The floor section 1 consists of a surface sheet 'Iw supported upon suitable reinforcing strips lb.

The lower end portions of the sections 6, 6a are provided with inwardly directed headed pins l3 adapted to engage brackets M on the 40 floor section 1, note Fig. 4, and in detachably coupling the sections 6, 6a. with the base section. The upper corner portions of the sections 6, 6a are provided with notches or recesses l5 for receiving hook-shaped coupling members l6 at 4,5 the ends of the strips 8, 8a in detachably coupling said strips therewith, the shape of the couplings I6 serving to draw the upper ends of the sections 6, 6a together as will be apparent.

On the inner surfaces of the strips 8, 8a. are longitudinally spaced cleats il upon which the inner surfaces of the roof sections 9, 9a are adapted to rest in the manner indicated in Fig.

2 of the drawings. The roof sections 9, 9a are each formed from inner frames l8 consisting of longitudinal and transverse strips as is indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Upon the frames H] are arranged facings l9 fashioned to represent the shingles of a roof. At longitudinally spaced intervals, the sections 9, 9a are each provided with V-shaped extensions 20 having window representations on the outer surfaces thereof to give the appearance of a conventional roof structure.

It will appear that the facings l9 extend above and below the frames l8, and the upper edges are adapted to receive a finishing strip 2|; whereas, the lower edges extend beyond the strips 8, 3a and the side edges of the end sections 6, 6a to provide the natural overhang of a roof structure and to more emphatically give the appearance of a shop at each side of the display unit. The above construction will form v-shaped openings above the end section 6, 6a and these openings are closed by panels 22 having window or other representations 23. The panels seat in grooved supporting strips 24 and may be retained against displacement by any other suitable means. In fact, the frictional engagement of the side edges of the panels 22 with the sheets l9, I'Ja will be sufficient to retain the same in position.

The partition wall ii is made up of frames Ila having panels Hb. In mounting the frames Na in position, they are placed edge to edge, the frames having downwardly projecting lugs 25 adapted to pass through corresponding apertures formed in the flared plate la. The upper edges of the frames seat in an elongated channeled bar 23 which in conjunction with the lugs 25 maintain the partition frames in common alinement, the ends of the bar 26 seating in apertures 2's in the end sections 6, 6a, one of which mountings is clearly seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

The end frames Ha forming the partition H may also be provided with one or more hookshaped extensions 28 adapted to enter apertures in the section 6, 6a to aid. in securing the frames Ha in position. At one side of the partition H, a shelf 29 is adapted to be supported upon suitable brackets 35 secured to spaced panels Hb to provide a long shelf upon which articles may be arranged for display purposes. It is understood that other articles may be arranged below the shelf or at one side thereof as will be apparent upon a consideration of the right side of Fig. 1 of the drawings.

At the opposite side surface of the partition I! are detachably mounted shelf supporting strips 3| arranged in spaced relation with respect to each other, the strips having headed screws or pins 32 detachably engaging key-hole plates 33 countersunk in the partition frames. Secured to the strips 3! are two or more shelves 34 as indicated at the left of Fig. 2 of the drawings. The shelves include bracket portions 34a. which reinforce their mounting in connection with the strips 3!. These shelves provide a means for displaying similar articles of merchandise at the opposite side of the display unit or shop.

It will be apparent from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the upper end of the partition H of the coupling bar 26 thereof is disposed below the lower edges of the strips 8, 8a. The purpose of this construction is to permit a source of light from a number of electric outlets 35 arranged beneath the peak of the roof structure as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, to illuminate articles placed on disof a number play at both sides of the partition H, and between the end sections 6, 6a. In this connection, it will be understood that the various types of merchandise placed on display will be arranged within the boundaries of the unit, either upon the base I or the shelf members employed. While the unit as a whole constitutes a different display adaptable for many uses, the par ticular shelf arrangement may be modified in distinct uses to satisfy the particular type and kind of merchandise displayed.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that a manufacturer desiring to group the display of his merchandise in the several stores or in the display rooms of his customers, can manufacture the several parts of the complete display unit and ship the same in a knocked-down condition to the customer, and quickly and easily set the display up for use upon any designated. floor space which the customer may have available for this purpose. The display unit does not become a permanent part or fixture in the store or sales room, but may be moved about from place to place or may be knocked down and entirely removed from the customer for re-use or other purposes. By virtue of the simplicity of construction and uniformity between the parts, a number of such parts may be made to complete the desired number of units necessary to satisfy the demands of the many customers of the manufacturer.

A display unit of the class described will present the merchandise to the customer in a very pleasing and attractive manner. In displaying cabinets and cases, wardrobes of merchandise, the same will be clearly visible. to the customer. The height of the unit will be consistent with the type and kind of merchandise placed on display. At the same time, the several articles of display may be conveniently removed for examination or inspection through the open sides of the unit.

It will be apparent that the separate sections or members of the display unit may be modified as to form and arrangement to adapt the same for different uses, for example, upon the floor to expose all sides of the display or upon a wall or in the corner of a room. However, in all uses, the general appearance of a shop will be maintained.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, and said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other.

2. A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and similar articles and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, and a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections.

A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, and a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections, the upper end of said partition being disposed below the upper ends of the end sections.

A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections, the upper end of said partition being disposed below the upper ends of the end sections, and said partition being composed of a plurality of independent frames, and a channeled bar for coupling and alining the upper ends of said frames.

A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections, the upper end of said partition being disposed below the upper ends of the end sections, said partition being composed of a plurality of independent frames and a channeled bar for coupling and alining the upper ends of said frames, and said end sections being in the form of closets and doors hinged to the outer walls thereof controlling admission to said closets.

A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections, the upper end of said partition being disposed below the upper ends of the end sections, said partition being composed of a plurality of independent frames and a channeled bar for coupling and alining the upper ends of said frames, said end sections being in the form of closets and doors hinged to the outer walls thereof controlling admission to said closets, and said partition including shelves disposed on opposite sides thereof.

A display unit of the class described comprising a base, end sections detachably coupled with the base and projecting upwardly therefrom to form end walls of a shop-like enclosure, means detachably connected with the upper portions of the end sections for coupling and bracing the same and hingedly coupled roof sections detachably mounted upon said end sections and. last named means, said roof sections being characterized to represent a shingled roof and being arranged angularly with respect to each other, a partition arranged upon the base section and detachably coupled therewith and with opposed walls of said end sections, the upper end of said partition being disposed below the upper ends of the end sections, said partition being composed of a plurality of independent frames and a channeled bar for coupling and alining the upper ends of said frames, said end sections being in the form of closets and doors hinged to the outer walls thereof controlling admission to said closets, said partition including shelves disposed on opposite sides thereof, and the partition being arranged at one side of the longitudinal center of the unit to provide a wide display side and a narrower display side within said unit.

A display unit of the class described comprising end sections, means at the upper and lower portions of said end sections for detachably coupling the same together in predetermined spaced relationship with respect to each other, a roof section detachably mounted upon said end sections, and a longitudinal wall section composed of a plurality of wall parts coupled with adjacent surfaces of said end sections and disposed therebetween to form a large display area intermediate the end sections and beneath said roof section.

9. A display unit of the class described comprising end sections, means at the upper and lower portions of said end sections for detachably coupling the same together in predetermined spaced relationship with respect to each other, a roof section detachably mounted upon said end sections, a longitudinal wall section composed of a plurality of wall parts coupled with adjacent surfaces of said end sections and disposed therebetween to form a large display area intermediate the end sections and beneath said roof section, and said roof section comprising a frame having a facing characterized to represent the shingles of a roof.

10. A display unit of the class described comprising end sections, means at the upper and lower portions of said end sections for detachably coupling the same together in predetermined spaced relationship with respect to each other, a roof section detachably mounted upon said end sections, a longitudinal wall section composed of a plurality of wall parts coupled with adjacent surfaces of said end sections and disposed therebetween to form a large display area intermediate the end sections and beneath said roof section, said roof section comprising a frame having a facing characterized to represent the shingles of a roof, and means for detachably mounting shelves in connection with one side of the longitudinal wall section.

11. A display unit of the class described comprising end sections, means at the upper and lower portions of said end sections for detachably coupling the same together in predetermined spaced relationship with respect to each other, a roof section detachably mounted upon said end sections, a longitudinal Wall section composed of a plurality of wall parts coupled with adjacent surfaces of said end sections and disposed therebetween to form a large display area intermediate the end sections and beneath said roof section, said roof section comprising a frame having a facing characterized to represent the shingles of a roof, means for detachably mounting shelves in connection with one side of the longitudinal wall section, and the end wall sections being in the form of closets and doors on the outer surfaces of said closets controlling admission thereto.
