BED-BOTTOM.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,362, dated May 25, 1858.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. NOBLE, of Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal section of a bed-bottom constructed according to my invention and applied to a bedstead. a1, a F ig. 2 indicates the plane of section. This invention consists in having a series of pulleys attached to the head and foot rails of the bedstead by means of straps, ropes, orV other flexible material, and having a rope pass around said pulleys, first around a pul ley on one rail and then around a pul ley on the other so that said rope will have a serpentine form and fill the whole bottom, the several lengths of rope being connected by elastic bands to form lateral stays, and the whole arranged as hereinafter' fully shown and described so as to form an economical, durable and flexible bed bottom desirable in every respect.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention l will proceed to describe it.

A, A, represent the head and foot rails of a bedstead to which wooden pins a, are attached, at equal and proper distances apart.

B, represents a series of pulleys which are attached to the pins a, one to each, by means of cords or leather straps or other flexible material b, the cords or straps passing through the eyes of the pulleys B, and around the pins a. Other modes of attach ment however may be used. A. metal pin may pass through' the eyes of the pulleys, said pins being fitted in metal straps and the cords attached to said straps. Any inode of attachment may be employed that will allow the pulleys to turn freely and at the same tim-e permit them to swing and twist or turn in a plane at right angles to their )lane of rotation, see red lines Fig. 3.

C, is a rope one end of which is attached to a pin d, at one end of a rail A. This rope passes around the pulleys B, alternately at either end of the bedstead and the pulleys B are placed at such a distance apart that the rope will, when strained around the several pulleys and both ends fastened, lill the bottom of the bedstead as shown in Fig. 2, and if the rope be strained or drawn tightly around the several pulleys a good bed bottom will be obtained, each length of rope that traverses across the bed being allowed to yield, turn or swing independently so as to accommodate itself to the movements or position of the body, and the bottom therefore is rendered perfectly flexible. The rope C, has its lengths connected by elastic bands c. rIhese bands during summer when a comparatively hard bottom is generally desired are not of much use, as the rope is strained or drawn sufliciently tight to prevent the several lengths of rope from moving too freely in a lateral direction, but during winter when a softer bottom is desirable and the rope G, relaxed the elastic bands are very essential as they serve as guides or stays to the rope.

I am aware that pulleys have been placed on pins attached to the rails of bedsteads to serve merely as friction rollers or pulleys to ease and facilitate the adj ust-ing of sacking bottoms to bedsteads; but I am not aware that rollers have been attached to bedstead rails as herein shown and a rope passed around said pulleys as described, so as to form a exible and yielding bed bottom.

I do not claim broadly therefore the einployinent or use of friction rollers, but

What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

l. The pulleys B, attached to two opposite sides or ends of the bedstead by cords, straps or equivalent means so as to admit of the free turning of the pulleys and the twisting of the same in planes at right angles with their plane of rotation, in combination with the rope C, which is strained around the pulleys, the whole being arranged as and for the purpose set forth.

2. I also claim in combination with the pulleys B, and rop-e C, the elastic bands e, for the purpose specified.
