IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,584, dated May 14, 1878; application filed March 18, 1878. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMBERT J. BRISTOL, of the city of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my snap-hook complete. Fig. 2 represents a detail view in longitudinal section of my pivoted tongue and the spring. Fig. 3 represents a detail view, partly in longitudinal section, of the main part of said hook before the attachment of said tongue. Fig. 4 represents a front View of the main part of my snap-hook, the tongue and spring being withdrawn. Fig. 5 represents a cross-section through Fig. 4, showing the projections or bearings before they are bent down. Fig. 6 represents detail top and bottom views of the tongue.
The first object of said invention is to provide means for firmly securing the tonguepivots to the main part of the snap-hook without obstructing their insertion into their sockets or preventing their pivotal action.
The second object of my invention is to provide means for securing the spring of my snaphook in position for operation without positively fastening it thereto.
The said first object is effected by providing the sockets in which the pivots turn with openings infront and with lips or bearings, which can be bent down so as to close said openings and complete the sockets after the pivots are inserted therein.
The said second object is effected by providing the tongue or the main part of the snaphook, or both, with a lug or lugs suitably shaped for confining the spring of the snaphook within a recess between said tongue and the main part of said snap-hook.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the tongue of my improved snap-hook, and B designates the main part thereof or snap-hook proper. The upper or thicker part of said tongue is deeply recessed on its inner face at what I claim as new,
front to allow of the easy insertion of pivots a a, and said blocks 12 b are provided with projections or cars b b which may be headed down after such insertion, so as to prevent the escape of said pivots from their sockets.
To prevent the escape of spring 0 from the recesses A B, I provide the bottom and one side of recess B with a lug, 12 which is of sufficient size to firmly hold the main part of said spring, but leaves a narrow passage, b, for the reception and endwise movement of the end of the Wire forming said spring.
For the same purpose I also provide tongue A on the inside with a lug, a, similar to 11 having beside it a narrow passage, a similar to b, for the reception and endwise movement of the other end of the wire forming said spring.
The construction above described allows the several parts of the snap-hook to be secured together in the easiest and most expeditious manner, and avoids all necessity for the use of additional fastenings.
Having thus fully described my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a snap-hook, projecting lips or cars adapted to be headed down, so as to secure the tongue-pivots in the sockets.
2. Tongue A, provided with lug a for retaining the spring of the snap-hook in position to operate.
3. A snap-hook having a lug, b, in its main part B, for preventing the escape of the operating-spring, substantially as set forth.
