29 Claims.
The present invention relates to lock mechanism, and has for its object to provide an improved time lock for protecting safes, vaults, and the like, which is especially adapted for preventing daylight holdups by delaying the time at which the safe door can be opened after successful operation of the combination or other means for controlling the time mechanism.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means by which the safe cannot be locked after having been unlocked until the time mechanism has been reset or conditioned for subsequent operation, whereby to avoid the possibility of closing and locking the safe door without resetting the time mechanism.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved dogging means for the bolt or bolt-work of a safe or the like in combination with a suitable time mechanism operable for a predetermined period to effect release of the dogging means, in conjunction with guard means for holding the dogging means against movement from inoperative or non-dogging position to operating or dogging position until the time mechanism has been reset for a subsequent operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved guard means for preventing movement of a bolt or dogging means therefor from nonprotecting or release position to an operating or securing position until other suitable means for controlling the operations of the bolt or dogging means has been conditioned to effect release of the guard means.
A further object of the invention is to employ the operating means of a combination or other type of lock, or a portion of the same, in conjunction with a bolt-dogging device to effect release of a time mechanism for delaying movement of the dogging device to non-dogging position, and to provide guard means adapted to automatically assume a position, upon release of the dog ging device, from which the latter cannot be returned to operating position until the operation of resetting or partially resetting the time mechanism has taken place.
To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

The present invention embodies an improved time lock for protecting safes, vaults, and other enclosures in which the time mechanism may be set to operate for a selected period. The release of the time mechanism for operation for the desiredperiod may be effected by any suitable control means such, for example, as a combination or key controlled lock, the object being to provide a compact, efficient, and relatively inexpensive lock mechanism of the class described and claimed.
The invention also embodies means by which to prevent relocking of the safe, following each unlocking operation, until a preliminary operation of means for controlling the time mechanism has been efiected such, for example, as the resetting of the time mechanism, manually, or otherwise, as preferred. In other words, should the person having control over the safe forget to reset the time mechanism he will find when he attempts to lock the safe that the bolt operating or dogging means cannot be moved to protecting position and he will therefore be reminded that he has failed to perform the necessary preliminary operation of resetting the time mechanism which must be done before movement of the parts to locking position can be effected.
In the present disclosure the time mechanism can only be released for operation after the successful operation of the combination of the lock shown, but it will be understood that if preferred a key lock or other suitable means may be employed to release the time mechanism.
It will be further understood that the bolt dogging means may also constitute the withdrawing means for the bolt or that it may be employed to dog the bolt or any suitable or well known type of bolt-work without being connected thereto for the purpose of moving the same to release position.
Referring to the drawings, Ii! represents a portion of a safe, vault, or the like, and II a door or closure therefor, on the inner face of which is secured by any suitable means a frame or casing I 2 as best shown in Fig. 2. A bolt [3 is carried by the casing and when in looking position projects into a keeper l4 secured to the wall of the safe It] as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The bolt is guided in the end wall of the casing and also by an offset portion l5 resting on the bottom of the casing as shown in Fig. 4.
The lock is preferably of the combination type and includes the usual knob and dial plate l6 and I1 respectively, located on the outside of the closure for operating the spindle l8 carrying a plurality of tumblers l9 and an operating disk 20 having 2, lug 2| for engaging the end of an arm 22 on the bolt for moving the latter from unlocking to locking position. The disk is provided with a cam surface 23 for raising the bolt dogging and operating element 2 2 which is pivoted at 25 upon the bolt. The bolt is retracted by engagement of the lug 2i on the disk with a shoulder 26 on the dogging element 24 when rotating the disk in a counterclockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 4, after the dogging element has moved to the full release position shown in Fig. 8. The dogging element carries a laterally projecting part 2'! overlying the peripheral portions of the tumblers, the dogging element being supported by the shoulder 26 in position to be held in check by a lug 24a on the casing l2 after the combination has been destroyed, the part 21 dropping into the notches 28 of the tumblers upon successful operation of the combination, after which the bolt can be withdrawn by turning the dial 16 in the proper direction.
The casing l2 has a cover plate section 29 removably secured thereon which carries the time mechanism, comprising the usual spring motor including a drum 3%. The motor has a shaft 3| operating to drive the main gear 32 of the time mechanism which in turn operates the train of gears shown in Fig. 6, which constitutes the ,usual or any well known type of clock mecha- -nism, in which is included a suitable escapement wheel 33 and a pallet 34 for controlling the same.
The time mechanisms are shown in duplicate and the corresponding parts are, therefore, given the same reference characters, it being understood that the two mechanisms operate independently of each other and that if one should, for any reason, fail to function, the other will serve to control the operations of the bolt or the dogging means therefor. The timing devices are made right and left hand in order to provide clearance for the insertion of a key or other instrument through the casing containing the same for cooperation with one or more of the tumblers when it is desired to effect a change in the combination in a manner described hereinafter.
The escapement wheels 33 are each mounted on an arbor 35, the ends of the arbors being journaled in the front and rear frame plates 36 and 31 respectively, between and by which the time mechanism is supported as shown in Figs. 2 and 10. The arbors 35 are each provided with a pinion 38 or its equivalent for receiving the free ends of the upper and lower U-shaped members 39 and 40 suitably secured upon a vertically disposed slide il. The slide is guided at its upper end by a U-shaped bracket 42 and also by the upper and lower pins 43 extending within the slots 44 of the slide.
The U-shaped member 13 of the slide, through engagement of its free end portions with the pinions 33 on the arbors 35, serves to hold the time mechanism in check when wound for operation provided, of course, that the slide has been moved to the position shown in Fig. 6. Movement of the slide to this position is effected by moving the bolt dogging element 24 to the position shown in Fig. 4, by turning the dial of the combination lock to destroy the combination. In this operation the dogging element is raised by the cam 23 of the disk 21'! and while being raised lifts the slide through engagement with the laterally projecting portion Ma thereof.
To effect release of the time mechanism for operation, the combination must be successfully operated, as by rotation of the dial to aline the notches of the tumblers in registry with the projection 21 of the dogging element whereby to permit of a slight downward movement of the latter to the position shown in Fig. 5 in order that the spring 45 may positively move the slide downwardly to the release position shown in Fig. '7, at which time the escapement wheels are freed for operation.
The slide and dogging element are held in this position, during operation of the time mechanism, by a movable support 36 pivoted at ll on the frame or cover plate 35 of the time mechanism, through engagement of the support with a lug 48 on the dogging element whereby the latter is prevented from dropping to its lowest or nondogging position in which it is shown in Fig. 8 and at which it is no longer guarded by the obstruction or lug 24a on the casing !2 of the lock.
Movement of the support 46 from holding position with respect to the dogging element is effected by the time mechanism at the expiration of the period for which it is set for operation through engagement of the operating pins 49 of the motor driven wheels 32 with a slidably mounted release bar 59, one of the pins moving into engagement with the depending lug 5! of the bar and the other engaging the right hand end portion 52 thereof as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The bar is slotted at 53 to receive a pin or projection 54 on the pivoted support 45 whereby when the time mechanism approaches the rundown position the support is moved from beeath the lug 48 on the dogging element to permit the latter to drop to the position shown in Fig. 8, thus permitting the slide 4| for releasing the time-mechanism to be moved to its lowest position by the spring 45. In this position of the slide the free ends of the U-shaped member 39 will engage the pinions 38 on the arbors 35 carrying the escapement wheels to prevent continued operation of the time mechanism.
The release bar 56 is preferably extended through and is supported and guided by the spaced portions'of the U-shaped bracket 42 for {guiding the slide 4|.
The release bar is held in the full release position shown in Fig. 8 by the pins 49 of the motor driven gears 32 until the springs of the motors are rewound at which time a coiled spring 55 will operate to return the release bar to the nor-- mal position shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the spring having one end connected with the-release bar and the other with the bracket 42.
The return of the release bar by the spring to the normal operating position shown in Fig. 6 effects. movement of the support 46 to normal position at which it will lie beneath the lug 48 on the dogging element to hold the latter in the position shown in Fig. 7, to which it is moved following successful operation of the combination. As previously stated the return of the dogging element and the bolt connected therewith is effected when relocking the safe by turning the dial and spindle to destroy the combination.
The means provided for preventing relocking of the safe in case the attendant should forget to rewind the time mechanism is preferably designed to cooperate with the dogging element to hold it against return to normal dogging position, but if desired may be made to operate in direct connection with some other part of the bolt control means to prevent movement of the bolt to locking position.
In the present design means is provided for malnng it necessary to at least effect a partial rewinding of each of the clock or time devices shown before the bolt can be moved from unlocking to locking position. The means for protecting or holding the dogging element against return to normal dogging position with respect to the bolt comprises a guard in the form of a bell crank lever 56 pivoted at 51 upon the front frame plate 36 of the time mechanism, the lever being moved from protecting position with respect to the bolt dogging element by the rewinding of the timing device shown at the left of Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. In Fig. 9 it will be noted that the dogging element has been moved to full release position by rotating the operating disk 26 of the combination lock counterclockwise from the position shown in Fig. 5. In the position of the dogging element shown in Fig. 9, a lug or abutment 58 projecting from the dogging element lies directly in front of the end portion 59 of the guard lever so that should an attempt be made to rotate the dial and spindle for the purpose of recasting the bolt, the abutment 58 will engage the end portion of the lever and prevent operation of the dial to an extent sufficient to cause the cam 23 of the driving disk 20, through engagement with the arm 22 of the bolt, to move the bolt to locking position.

ated to move the lever 56 from the bolt protecting position shown in Fig. 9 to the release position shown in Fig. 6 This means preferably comprises a cam 69 or its equivalent connected with the winding shaft 3| of the spring motor, or if preferred with the driving gear 32, which is rotated by the shaft when rewinding the timing device. The cam may be constructed in any preferred manner suitable for accomplishing the purpose desired, but preferably comprises a circularshaped member having a depression or opening 6| in its wall for receiving the inner end of a lever 62 pivoted at 63 upon theplate 36 opposite the guard or bell crank lever 56. The lever 62 has a stud or projection 64 thereon which extends into operative engagement with the outer end of the guard lever for moving the latter to the release position upon rewinding or resetting the timing device shown at the left of Figs. 6 and 7. The lever 62; is held in engagement with the cam 66 by means of a spring 65 secured upon a bolt 66 or other suitable means for detachably connecting the front andrear frame plates 36 and 31 for supporting the timing devices.
During the operating period of the timing device the guard lever 56 is freed by the lever 62 for movement by the spring 61 from the non-protecting position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 8, the lever 62 at this time being operated by the edge portion 6|b of the cam 66, and the guard lever being held in the position shown in Fig. 8 to which it is moved by the spring which is suitably secured upon the front plate 36 of the time mechanism.
The position of the cam 66 when the time mechanism has been allowed to run for a selected period for the purpose of releasing the bolt is clearly shown in Fig. 8 in which position the lever 62 has moved out of the opening 6| of the cam and rests upon the peripheral portion of the latter. The guard lever when in the position shown in Fig. 9 will operate to prevent recasting of the bolt since the inner end portion 59 of the lever lies in the path of the lug 58 on the dogging element.
In the position of the parts shown in Fig.6, if the driving shaft 3| of the timing device is rotated in a clockwise direction, the inner end of the lever 62 will move into the recess 6| of the cam and upon continued winding of the timing device the portion 6|a of the cam will engage and move the lever from the position shown in Fig. 8 to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
It will be understood that the position of the operating portion Glut of the cam with respect to the inner end of the lever 62 when the timing device is run down or at bolt releasing position determines the minimum period for which the timing device must be reset for operation before the cam will act on the lever to cause it to move the guard 56 to the position at which it will release the dogging element for return to dogging position, or in other words to the position at which the guard is shown in Fig. 6. This period in the present case is fifteen minutes but may be increased or decreased if desired by varying the position of the operating portion of the cam with respect to the lever 62 when the time mechanism is in full release or run down position.
The guard means shown at the right of Figs. 6 and '7 for preventing return of the dogging means to bolt dogging position is substantially the same as that described above and therefore the corresponding parts with the exception of the lever 56a have been given the same reference characters. It should be pointed out, however, that the position of the guard operating lever 62 at the right of Figs. 6 and '7 has been reversed but its function and manner of operation, under control of the cam, is the same as in the case of the corresponding left hand lever. However the right hand guard lever 56a which is pivoted upon the plate 36 at 51a carries a laterally projecting pin 68 which extends through a slot 69 in the plate 36 into position to be engaged by the lever 62 and said lever when operated by the portion 6 la of the cam 60 will swing the guard lever from the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9 to release position with respect to the bolt dogging element as shown in Fig. 6.
It will be noted, however, that when the dogging element 24 is in the bolt releasing position shown in Fig. 9 that the lug 48 thereon lies at the rear of the inner end portion 59a of the right hand guard lever while the lug 58 lies in front of the end portion 59 of the left hand guard lever 56. With this arrangement, either of the guard levers will prevent recasting of the bolt if the other has been moved to release position by rewinding the timing device corresponding thereto. It will be seen, therefore, that the dogging element can not be operated to return the bolt to locking position until each timing device has been rewound or set for operation.
When the safe is locked the timing mechanism are held in check by the means provided for that purpose, at which time the cams, and guard levers controlled by the cams, will occupy the positions shown in Fig. 6, in which the guard levers are at release position with respect to the dogging element. If, however, the combination is successfully operated the dogging element will drop to the position shown in Fig. 7 at which the U-shaped member 49 of the slide 4| will release the timing devices for operation, and when they have completed their operations the cam portions 6lb will have operated upon the levers 62 to shift them whereby to permit the springs 61 to return the guard levers to the position shown in Fig. 8 in which they are held by the springs against suitable stops 19 on the plate 36.
In this position of the parts the combined dogging and bolt operating element 24 has not been shifted to effect release of the bolt, but upon turning the dial in the proper direction the dogging element will be moved to the position shown in Fig. 9 to move the bolt to release or unlocking position. During movement of the dogging element from the position shown in Fig. 8 to that shown in Fig. 9 the lug 58 on the dogging element will engage the cam portion II of the guard lever and the latter will swing upwardly out of the path of the lug and the lever will subsequently be returned by the spring 61 to the position shown in Fig. 9. At the same time the lug 48 of the dogging element will engage the cam portion Ha. of the guard lever 56a. and as the lug passes under the end portion 590. of the lever the latter will be lifted, after which the spring 61 will return the lever to the position shown in Fig. 9.
In this manner the operation of opening the safe is completed, the parts remaining in the position shown in Fig. 9 until it is again desired to move the bolt to locking position. This operation as stated above first requires the rewinding of each timing device to shift the guards for the dogging element to the position shown in Fig. 6, after which the dial knob can be turned to destroy the combination and to shift the bolt to locking position.
The main driving shafts 3| of the timing de-' vices, which are driven by the spring motors, are provided with operating knobs 12 for rewinding the motors and each of the shafts carries a laterally extending member 13 adapted to engage a pin 14 which is threaded to take intoany one of a series of holes 15 in the rear wall of the casing 29. The holes are preferably spaced at distances corresponding to five minute periods of operation of the timing devices and by shifting the pin to one or another of the holes the intervals of operation may be increased or decreased as desired. When the timing devices are in run down or release position, the arm 13 on the winding shaft 3| will engage a stop 16 suitably secured upon the rear wall of the casing 29.
As previously stated the operating cams 60 are so constructed as to make it necessary for each of the timing devices to be wound for a period of at least fifteen minutes in order to shift the guards 56 and 56a to full release position with respect to the dogging element 24, or in other words, to the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the arm 13 has been moved from the zero point into engagement with the pin 14 located at a position corresponding to the fifteen minute period. By shifting the pins to any of the other positions the period of operation of the timing devices can be increased and by omitting the pins the timing devices can be set to operate each for the full thirty minute period before releasing the bolt dogging element.
The lock and time mechanism casings l2 and 29 are detachably connected one with another by means of the screws 11. The tumblers and other parts of the lock proper are assembled in the casing I2 and can be applied as a unit to the safe door. The several parts of the two timing devices are first assembled in the casing 29, after which said casing is applied as a unit to the casing 19, from which it can be quickly removed without disturbing the parts of the lock proper upon removal of the screws 11.
In the modification shown in Fig. 13 the bolt of the combination lock mechanism shown in Figs. 4 and may be employed as a dogging means for the bolt-work of the safe, a portion of which is indicated at 18 and which is guided in its movements by a sleeve-like member 79 suitably secured to the door Ha or other wall of the safe. In Fig. 13 the mechanisms contained in the casings l2 and 29 are the same as those shown in other figures of the drawings previously described herein. As previously stated the timing devices housed within the rear section 29 of the mechanism casing are of the right and left hand variety in order that a key or other suitable instrument, not shown, may be inserted through the rear wall of the casing and between the oppositely disposed lower gears of the two trains shown in Fig. 6 when employing the key for cooperation with the tumblers to effect a change in the combination. It will be understood that one or more of the tumblers may include the usual relatively movable sections, one of which is adapted to be held by a key or other instrument, while another is moved relative thereto as, for example, by rotating the dial and spindle of the combination lock to effect a change in the combination after the tumblers have been shifted to a predetermined position, or the notches thereof brought into alinement upon successful operation of the combination. To this end. the tumblers are provided with openings for receiving the key which become alined when the tumblers are adjusted to normal. position whereby to protect the bolt and.
aline the notches thereof. One such opening is shown at 8B in the tumbler l 9, Figs. 4 and 5, and
' the rear wall of the casing section 29 is also provided with an opening 8|, Fig. 6, which is normally closed by a pivoted cover 82, as shown in Fig. 3, the opening 8| being partially surrounded by an inwardly projecting boss-like member 83 on saidwall. The boss-like member is provided with a shoulder 85 for receiving a ward on the change key when the latter is in position to hold one of the tumbler sections against movement, while another is shifted by turning the dial and spindle of the combination lock.
Furthermore the front and rear plate members 36 and 3'! between and by which the timing devices 30 are supported are each cut away at its lower edge to afford an opening 85, Fig. 6, to permit the change key to be. inserted through said plate members and between the right and left hand timing devices into the openings Bil of the tumblers. It will be seen therefore that, notwithstanding the fact that the timing devices and the several walls or plates for supporting the same are all disposed in rear of the tumblers, the construction and arrangement of the parts is such as to permit the change key to be inserted therethrough into the openings of the tumblers without having to remove the timing devices or any other supporting structure therefor.
I claim:
1. In lock mechanism, time mechanism, a control member therefor, a bolt control device having a normal bolt protecting position and adapted when in said position to support said control member in position to hold the time mechanism in check, said device being movable to a different position to release said control member to release the time mechanism without releasing the bolt, a part for supporting said device in said different position movable to free said device for movement to bolt releasing position after operation of the time mechanism for a selected period, mechanism operated by the time mechanisms at the expiration of said period to shift said movable part to permit said bolt control device to move to bolt releasing position, and means controlled by the time mechanism for holding said bolt control device against return to normal bolt protecting position, said last mentioned means being conditioned by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter whereby to effect release of the bolt control device for return to normal position.
2. In lock mechanism, time mechanism, a bolt control device having a normal bolt protecting position and adapted when in said position to hold the time mechanism incheck, said device being movable to a different'position to release the time mechanism without releasing the bolt, a part for supporting said device in said different position movable to free said device for movement to bolt releasing position after operation of the time mechanism .for a selected period, the time mechanism operating at the expiration of said period to shift said movable part to free said control device for movement to bolt releasing position, means controlled by the time mechanism for holding said bolt control device against return to normal bolt protecting position, said last mentioned means being conditioned by'a portion of the time mechanism upon resetting the latter whereby to effect release of the bolt control device for return to normal position, and means associated with said bolt control device movable in the direction to return the latter to to hold the time mechonism in check.
3. In lock mechanism, abolt, means for Withdrawing said bolt, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said means, means cooperating with the bolt withdrawing means for holding. the time mechanism in check and movable upon a partial operation of the bolt-withdrawing means to release the time mechanism, and guard means operating to hold the bolt-withdrawing means at withdrawn position, said guard means being conditioned by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the bolt-withdrawing means. to permit the bolt to be returned to the position it is adapted to occupy when the bolt is in locking position.
4. In lock mechanism, a bolt, means for withdrawing said bolt, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said means, means for holding the time mechanism in check adapted upon a partial operation of the bolt-withdrawing means to release the time mechanism, and guard means controlled by the time mechanism adapted during the running period of the time mechanism to move from a non-protecting position into position to hold the bolt-withdrawing means against return from withdrawn position to the position ity is adapted to occupy when the bolt is in locking position, said guard means being returned to said non-protecting position by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter.
5. In lock mechanism, a bolt, means for withdrawing said bolt, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said means, means for holding the time mechanism in check movable upon a partial operation of the bolt-withdrawing means torelease the time mechanism, and guard means controlled by the'time mechanism serving after the latter has operated fora selected period to assume a position at which to hold the bolt against return from unlocking to locking position, said guard means including relatively movable parts one comprising a dog and another being moved by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to move the dog to inoperative position whereby to free the bolt for return to locking position.
6. In lock mechanism, a bolt, means for withdrawing the bolt, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said means, means for holding the time mechanism in check adapted upon a partial operation of the bolt-Withdrawing means to be conditioned by the latter to release the time mechanism, guard means operating to hold the bolt-withdrawing means at withdrawn position, and an operating device associated with and movable by the time mechanism upon resetting the same to move the guard means whereby to free the bolt-withdrawing means for return to the position it is adapted to occupy when the bolt is in locking position.
7. In lock mechanism, a bolt, means for withdrawing the bolt, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said means, means for holding the time mechanism in check movable upon a partial operation of the bolt-withdrawing means to release the time mechanism, a dogging part operable to hold the bolt-withdrawing means at withdrawn position, a second part movable to shift the dogging part to release position, and means movable with the time mechanism upon resetting the latter adapted to operate the second part to effect movement of the dogging part to release position.
8. In lock mechanism, the combination with position to release the time mechanism for operation to free the bolt for movement to unlocking position, of means for holding the bolt against return to locking position after the time mechanism has operated for a selected period, said means being connected with the time mechanism for release thereby to release the bolt for return to locking position upon resetting the time mechanism.
9. In lock mechanism, the combination with a closure, a bolt for locking the closure, time mechanism, control means for holding the time mechanism in check including a part operable from the exterior of the closure when in locked position to release the time mechanism for operation to free the bolt for movement to unlocking position, of means controlled by the time mechanism and conditioned thereby during the running period thereof for movement into position to hold the bolt against return to locking position, said means being moved from said position to release the bolt for return to locking position by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter.
10. In lock mechanism, the combination with a closure, a bolt for locking the closure, time mechanism, control means for holding the time mechanism in check including a part operable from the exterior of the closure when in locked position to release the time mechanism for operation to free the bolt for movement to unlocking position, of means controlled by the time mechanism serving after the latter has operated for a selected period to guard the bolt against return from unlocking to locking position, said means including relatively movable parts, one comprising a movable dog and another being moved by the time mechanism to move the dog to inoperative position upon resetting the time mechanisms whereby to free the bolt for return to looking position.
11. In lock mechanism, the combination with a closure, a bolt for locking the closure, time mechanism, control means for holding the time mechanism in check including a protecting element for the bolt and a part operable from the exterior of the closure when in locked position to condition said element for release of the time mechanism, means for holding said element against movement to bolt releasing position operated by the time mechanism at the expiration of a predetermined period to release said element, of means for holding said element against return to bolt protecting position, said last mentioned means being conditioned by the time mechanism to free said element for return to said position upon resetting the time mechanism.
12. In lock mechanism, the combination with a closure, a bolt for locking the closure, time mechanism, control means for holding the time mechanism in check including a protecting element for the bolt and a part operable from the exterior of the closure when in locked position to condition said element for release of the time mechanism, means for holding said element against movement to bolt releasing position operated by the time mechanism at the expiration of a predetermined period to release said element, of means for holding said element against return to bolt protecting position comprising relatively movable parts one normally occupying a dogging position with respect to said element and another being actuated by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to move the dogging element to release position.
13. In a lock, locking mechanism including a combination lock and dogging means for protecting a bolt for securing a closure, said look also including an actuating part operable from the exterior of the closure when the latter isin closed position to efiect successful operation of said mechanism preparatory to conditioning the dogging means to render the bolt releasable, time mechanism for controlling the dogging means released for operation upon successful operation of said combination lock and adapted after operation for a predetermined period to condition the dogging means to render the bolt releasable, and obstructing means for holding the dogging means at bolt releasing position, said obstructing means being connected withand conditioned by the time mechanism to free the dogging means for return to bolt protecting position upon resetting the time mechanism.
14. In lock mechanism, bolt protecting means including a movable dogging element, time mechanism, a device associated with said dog ging element for holding the time mechanism ir: check when the dogging element is in normal dogging position, said device being adapted to release the time mechanism when the dogging element is at a predetermined position, control means for holding said element at normal dogging position operable to free the same for movement to said predetermined position whereby to release the time mechanism, a part for receiving and supporting said dogging element when the latter is moved to said predetermined position, said part being subsequently moved by the time mechanism to release the dogging element, a movable member for holding the dog-- ging element against return to normal dogging position, and a second member operated by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free said movable member for movement to release the dogging element for return to normal position.
15. In lock mechanism, bolt dogging means including a movable dogging element, control means for holding said element at normal dogging position operable to free said element for a limited movement, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said element, a device supported by said element when in normal dogging position adapted to hold the time mechanism in check and serving to release the same when the control means is operated to free said element for said limited movement, a movable member for receiving and supporting said dogging element upon completion of said limited movement and a slidably mounted part adapted to shift said movable member and actuated by the time mechanism to release the dogging element whereby to free the bolt.

In lock mechanism, bolt dogging means including a movable dogging element, control means for holding said element at normal dogging position operable to free said element for a limited movement, time mechanism for controlling the operation of said element, a control device for the time mechanism supported by said element when in normal dogging position adapted to hold the time mechanism in check and serving to release the same when the control means is operated to free said element for said limited movement, a movable member for receiving and supporting said dogging eleent upon completion of said limited movement adapted to be moved by the A time mechanism to release the doging element,
said control device serving when the dogging element is released to hold the time mechanism against continued operation.
17. In lock mechanism, locking means for securing a closure, time mechanism for protecting said locking means, control means adapted to be operated from the exterior of the closure when in closing position to control the unlocking operations of said locking means, means for holding the time mechanism in check adapted to be conditioned by the operation of saidcontrol means to effect release of the time mechanism for operation for a predetermined period whereby to efiect release of the locking means for movement to unlocking position, a shiftable member adapted in one posiito'n to hold the locking means against movement from unlocking to locking position, and means connected with the time mechanism and actuated thereby during operation thereof to move said shiftable member to free the looking means for return to locking position.
18. In lock mechanism, bolt dogging means, time mechanism for protecting the dogging means, means for holding the time mechanism in check operable to release the same for operation whereby to effect release of the dogging means for movement to non-dogging position, a shiftable member for holding the dogging means against movement from non-dogging to dogging position, an operating part for moving said shiftable member to free the dogging means for movement to normal dogging position, and a part associated with the time mechanism and movable therewith when resetting the same adapted to actuate said operating part to move said shiftable member to release the dogging means for return to dogging position.
19. In lock mechanism, dogging means, timing mechanism for preventing movement of the dogging means from dogging position, and obstructing means for the dogging means under the control of the timing mechanism for holding the dogging means at non-dogging position, said obstructing means being released by the timing mechanism upon resetting the latter after operation whereby to release the dogging means for return to dogging position.
20. In lock mechanism, locking means, timing mechanism for protecting the locking means to hold it against release, a partial operation of the locking means serving to release the timing mechanism for operation to free the locking means for movement to non-locking position, and obstructing means under the control of the timing mechanism adapted to hold the locking means at non-locking position, said obstructing means being released by the timing mechanism upon resetting the latter after operation whereby to release the locking means for return to looking position.
21. In lock mechanism, lo'cking means, timing mechanism for protecting the locking means to hold it against release, a partial operation of the locking means serving to release the timing mechanism for operation to free the locking means for movement to non-locking position, and obstructing means for the locking means under the control of the timing mechanism comprising a movable part for holding the locking means at non-locking position, and a second part cooperating with the timing mechanism to hold the last mentioned part at operating position, said second part being conditioned by the timing mechanism upon resetting the latter to release the first mentioned part thereby to release the locking means for return to locking position.
22. In lock mechanism, the combination of locking means for securing a closure, time mechanism for protecting said locking means, means for controlling the operations of said locking means adapted to hold the time mechanism in checkand operable to free the time mechanism for operation to release the locking means for movement to unlocking position, a device for holding the locking means when at unlocking position against return to locking position, and means connected with and actuated by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to move said device whereby to free the locking means for return to locking position.
23. In lock mechanism, the combination of lock ing means for securing a closure, time mechanism for protecting said locking means, means for controlling the operations of said locking means adapted to hold the time mechanism in check and operable to free the time mechanism for operation to release the locking means for movement to unlocking position, and means including relatively movable parts conditioned by the time mechanism during the running period thereof whereby one of said parts is freed for movement to hold the locking means against movement from unlocking to locking position, said parts being shifted by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the locking means for return to locking position.
24. In lock mechanism, the combination of a closure, locking means for securing the closure, time mechanism for protecting said locking means, control means adapted to be operated from the exterior of the closure when in closing position to control the operations of said locking means, a part of said locking means normally holding the time mechanism in check and adapted to be conditioned by operation of said control means to free the time mechanism for operation to efiect release of the locking'means for mov ment to unlocking position, and means including relatively movable parts conditioned by the time mechanisms during the running period thereof,
one comprising an obstructing part for holding the locking means against return from unlocking to locking position and having an operating part for moving it toobstructing position, and
. another being moved by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the obstructing part for movement to release the locking means for return to locking position.
25. In lock mechanism, bolt dogging means, time mechanism for protecting said means normally held in check thereby and operable for predetermined period to effect release of the same, operating means for conditioning the dogging means to release the time mechanism, said operating means also controlling operation of the dogging means, and means serving to render the dogging means non-responsive to said operating means when the bolt is in unlocked position, said obstructing means being conditioned by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the dogging means for control by the operating means.
26. In lock mechanism, bolt dogging means, time mechanism for protecting said means normally held in check thereby and operable for a predetermined period to efiect release of the same, operating means for conditioning the dogging means to release the time mechanism, said operating means also controlling operation of the dogging means, and obstructing means conditioned by the time mechanism during the running period thereof to render the dogging means non-responsive to said operating means when the bolt is in unlocked position, said obstructing means being conditioned by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the dogging means for control by the operating means.
27. In'lock mechanism, a bolt, time mechanism for protecting the bolt, operating means for releasing the time mechanism for operation, said operating means also controlling operation of the bolt, and obstructing means conditioned by the time mechanism during a portion of the running period thereof to render the operating means ineffective as a control means for the bolt when the latter is in unlocked position, said obstructing means being conditioned by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the operating means for operation of the bolt.
28. In lock mechanism, the combination of locking means, time mechanism, control means for holding the time mechanism in check and for preventing release of the locking means and its return from unlocked to locking position, said control means being operable to release the time mechanism without release of the locking means, said time mechanism serving after operation for a predetermined period to release the control means to free the locking means for unlocking, and obstructing means for holding the control means in position to prevent return of the locking means to locking position, said obstructing means being interposed between the control means and the time mechanism and conditioned by the latter when resetting the same to release the control means whereby to free the locking means for return to locking position.
29. In lock mechanism, the combination of locking means for securing a closure, time mechanism for protecting said locking means, control means interposed between the locking means and the time mechanism for controlling the opera tions of each, said control means operating in a predetermined position to hold the time mechanism in check. and to prevent movement of said locking means to unlocked position, a partial operation of said locking means serving to condition said control means for movement to release the time mechanism, said time mechanism serv ing at the end of a predetermined period of operation to condition said control means for movement to a position at which to free the locking means, and obstructing means under control of the time mechanism operating in a predetermined position to hold the control means in said last mentioned position, said obstructing means being released by the time mechanism upon resetting the latter to free the control means for return to position at which to hold the time mechanism in check, said time mechanism serving during operation to condition the obstructing means for return to said predetermined position.
