Definitions
- This invention relates to fastening inserting machines and is illustrated herein as embodied in a machine particularly adapted to insert paper pegs in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
- Machines particularly adapted for the insertion of paper pegs (now commonly known as fibre fastenings) of the character disclosed and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,729,169, granted September 24, 1929, on an I application filed in my name, are being extensively and successfully used.
- a peg of the type above referred to it is necessary first to form a hole in the work piece to receive a peg which is then driven into the hole.
- separate tools are used to form the holes and to insert the pegs in the holes.
- Such machines are extensively used and are satisfactory, particularly when the hole forming means is utilized to feed the work past the fastening inserting means.
- a single tool is used to form the fastening receiving hole and to insert the fastening in the hole.
- Machines of this latter type operate satisfactorily but it is necessary to provide a relatively complicated mechanism for imparting the proper reciprocating movements to the tool.
- the illustrated machine which comprises a preferred embodiment, is provided with an operating tool which acts both as an awl and as a driver, means for reciprocating the tool, and connections between the tool and the reciprocating means including a member yieldably connected to the tool and adapted to move relatively to the tool after the tool has penetrated the work piece to form a fastening receiving hole thereby permitting the tool to be withdrawn from the work during theearly portion of the movement of said reciprocating means toward the work, and means acting during a later portion of said movement to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the fastening receiving hole.
- connections between the tool and the means for reciprocating the tool include a latch carried by the reciprocating means constructed and arranged to transmit movement of the reciprocating means to the tool carrier during the early portion of the movement of the reciprocating means toward a work piece toform a fastening receiving hole in the work piece and means normally maintaining the latch in engagement with the carrier and arranged to yield to permit relative movement between the tool carrier and the reciprocating means after the tool has formed a fastening receiving hole in the work piece.
- the connections include also means in the form of a lever pivoted to the reciprocating means and having one arm arranged to engage cam surfaces on the frame of the machine after the tool has penetrated the work, said lever having another arm engaging the tool carrier and arranged to withdraw the tool from the work, and a projection formed on said reciprocating means arranged to engage the tool carrier to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the hole during a later portion of the movement of the reciprocating means toward the work.
- the iilustrated machine is provided with means for severing a fastening from a length of fastening material and for transferring the severed fastening into the path of movement of the operating tool just prior to the fastening inserting operation.

- the head of the machine is also provided with a reel l8 which carries fibre fastening material 26.
- the fibre fastening material 26 is fed between a pair of feed rolls 22 (Fig. 1) into a tube 24 which terminates at a point adjacent to a movable peg shearing and transfer plate 26 (Figs. 2 and 3).
- the plate 26 is provided with a fastening receiving hole 27 into which the fastening material is fed.
- a stationary block 28 lies just above the plate 26 and co-operates therewith to shear the peg from the string of fastening material.
- the mechanism for feeding the fastening material to the plate 26 need not be described in detail in this application since it is fully described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,327,196, granted January 6, 1920, on application of Matthias Brock. It is to be understood, however, that any other suitable feeding mechanism could be employed if so desired.
- the actuating bar it (Figs. 2 and 4 to 8) is connected to a tool 34 (Figs. 2, 4 and operating both as an awl and as a driver, the connection being so constructed and arranged that a single movement of the actuating bar i6 in one direction will cause the tool 34 to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, withdraw the tool from the work and then move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the hole. Return movement of the actuating bar i6 will return the parts to their original position in preparation for a repetition of the cycle of operation of the machine.

31 Claims.
This invention relates to fastening inserting machines and is illustrated herein as embodied in a machine particularly adapted to insert paper pegs in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
Machines particularly adapted for the insertion of paper pegs (now commonly known as fibre fastenings) of the character disclosed and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,729,169, granted September 24, 1929, on an I application filed in my name, are being extensively and successfully used. When inserting a peg of the type above referred to, it is necessary first to form a hole in the work piece to receive a peg which is then driven into the hole. In some types of machines separate tools are used to form the holes and to insert the pegs in the holes. Such machines are extensively used and are satisfactory, particularly when the hole forming means is utilized to feed the work past the fastening inserting means. In other types of machines a single tool is used to form the fastening receiving hole and to insert the fastening in the hole. Machines of this latter type operate satisfactorily but it is necessary to provide a relatively complicated mechanism for imparting the proper reciprocating movements to the tool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and reliable fastening inserting machine having a tool which acts both as an awl and as a driver, well adapted for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes. To this end the illustrated machine, which comprises a preferred embodiment, is provided with an operating tool which acts both as an awl and as a driver, means for reciprocating the tool, and connections between the tool and the reciprocating means including a member yieldably connected to the tool and adapted to move relatively to the tool after the tool has penetrated the work piece to form a fastening receiving hole thereby permitting the tool to be withdrawn from the work during theearly portion of the movement of said reciprocating means toward the work, and means acting during a later portion of said movement to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the fastening receiving hole. As illustrated, the connections between the tool and the means for reciprocating the tool include a latch carried by the reciprocating means constructed and arranged to transmit movement of the reciprocating means to the tool carrier during the early portion of the movement of the reciprocating means toward a work piece toform a fastening receiving hole in the work piece and means normally maintaining the latch in engagement with the carrier and arranged to yield to permit relative movement between the tool carrier and the reciprocating means after the tool has formed a fastening receiving hole in the work piece. The connections include also means in the form of a lever pivoted to the reciprocating means and having one arm arranged to engage cam surfaces on the frame of the machine after the tool has penetrated the work, said lever having another arm engaging the tool carrier and arranged to withdraw the tool from the work, and a projection formed on said reciprocating means arranged to engage the tool carrier to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the hole during a later portion of the movement of the reciprocating means toward the work. The iilustrated machine is provided with means for severing a fastening from a length of fastening material and for transferring the severed fastening into the path of movement of the operating tool just prior to the fastening inserting operation.
With the above and other objects and features in view the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail view of the mechanism carrying the fastening inserting tool.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the machine is provided with a column H) which supports the operating instrumentalities of the machine. A head 52 is secured to the column l9 and carries the fastening inserting instrumentalities. The head i2 is provided with a main shaft to one end of which is secured a treadle controlled stopping and starting mechanism of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,291,754, granted January 21, 1919, on application of Matthias Brock. The other end of the shaft carries a cam 14 which is constructed and arranged to raise an actuating bar I6 which will hereinafter be more particularly described.
The head of the machine is also provided with a reel l8 which carries fibre fastening material 26. The fibre fastening material 26 is fed between a pair of feed rolls 22 (Fig. 1) into a tube 24 which terminates at a point adjacent to a movable peg shearing and transfer plate 26 (Figs. 2 and 3). The plate 26 is provided with a fastening receiving hole 27 into which the fastening material is fed. A stationary block 28 lies just above the plate 26 and co-operates therewith to shear the peg from the string of fastening material. The mechanism for feeding the fastening material to the plate 26 need not be described in detail in this application since it is fully described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,327,196, granted January 6, 1920, on application of Matthias Brock. It is to be understood, however, that any other suitable feeding mechanism could be employed if so desired.
It should be noted that although the machine is illustrated herein as provided with a springdriven fastening inserting mechanism which will now be described, it could be provided with any other suitable means for operating the fastening inserting mechanism. The cam I 4 (Fig. l) lifts the actuating oar l6 against a spring 32 and when the cam !4 has been rotated a sumcient distance a projection on the actuating bar 56 drops off the cam l4 and the driver bar is forced downwardly under the influence of the spring 32 to perform the fastening inserting operation.
The actuating bar it (Figs.
Mounted on the front of the head i2 of the machine is a supporting member or frame 46 which is provided with ways in which the actuating bar 16 is reciprocated. The lower end of the frame 43 carries a presser plate 42, best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which is secured to the frame 46 by means of cap screws 44. The lower end of the actuating bar l6 carries a latch 45 (Figs. 2 and 4 to 8) which is mounted for movement in ways formed in the lower end of the actuating bar. The latch 46 is urged forwardly by a plunger 48 (Figs. 2, 4 and 5) mounted in a hole formed in the rear portion of the frame 46, the plunger being urged forwardly by a spring 56. The pressure of the spring 56 may be increased or decreased by an adjusting screw 52 also mounted in the frame 46. The forward end 47 of the latch 46 extends forwardly of the lower end of the actuating bar i3 and fits into a slot 49 (Figs. 2, 4 and 8) formed in the upper portion of a tool carrier 54 which carries at its lower end the operating tool 34. The tool carrier 54 slides in ways formed in the lower portion of the frame 46, the carrier being held in these ways by plates 51 secured to the frame 46 by screws 53. When the actuating bar It is moved downwardly, the tool carrier 54 and the tool 34 are moved downwardly until the tool' 34 penetrates the work piece and strikes the bottom plate of a last or the horn button on the work support. The resistance to movement of the tool carrier 54 then becomes greater than the pressure of the spring 5!! against the latch 46 thus permitting the latch 46 to move rearwardly, thus causing relative movement between the actuating bar It and the tool carrier 54.
When the parts of the device are in the position shown in Fig. 4, a bell crank lever 56 pivotally secured to the lower end of the actuating bar l6 and having a pair of arms carrying cam rolls 64 is in position to engage cam surfaces 58 on cam members 60 secured to the sides of the frame 40. The other arm 51 of the bell crank lever 56 fits into a slot 62 in the tool carrier 54. When the cam rolls 64 on the lever 56 engage the cam surfaces 58, the bell crank lever 56 is rotated in a clockwise direction, thereby moving the tool carrier 54 upwardly. During this time the actuating bar 16 has been moving downward- 1y so that another pair of cam surfaces 66 on the cam member 60 engage cam surfaces 68 formed on the bell crank lever 56, thereby continuing the upward movement of the tool carrier 54 until the projecting portion 41 of the latch I 46 engages a notch 10 formed in the rear surface of the tool carrier 54 and the upper edge or surface of the tool carrier 54 engages a forwardly extending projection 72 on the actuating bar 16.
The extreme lower end of the actuating bar [6 is provided with a cam member 13 for moving the transfer plate 26 forwardly to bring the hole 21 in the transfer plate and the fastening contained therein into alinement with the tool 34. The. transfer plate 26 is provided with a block 14 having an inclined upper surface 16 which is engaged by an inclined cam surface 18 formed on the lower portion of the cam member 73. At the time when the inclined surface 16 on the block 74 engages the cam surface 18, the tool 34 has been withdrawn from the work and out of the path of movement of the transfer plate 26. Continued downward movement of the actuating bar 16 then moves the transfer plate 26 forwardly in ways 86 formed in the presser plate 42. This forward movement of the transfer plate 26 continues until the fastening-receiving hole 2'! is in alinement with the tool 34.
With the parts of the device in the position just described, the actuating bar [6 continues its downward movement to insert a fastening in the Work. The tool 34 is moved downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5 with the end of the tool 34 flush with the surface of the work to insert a fastening in the Work. The parts of the fastening inserting device are now in the position which they occupy during a portion of the return movement of the actuating bar Hi. The parts of the device move upwardly as a unit until the upper surface of the tool carrier 54 strikes a stop 82 formed on the lower end of the cover plate 39. During this portion of movement of the actuating bar the transfer plate 26 has been returned to its initial position by the engagement of a cam surface 84 with a cam surface 86 on a block 81 formed on the slide 26, the surfaces being so arranged that upward movement of the actuating bar will cause the transfer plate 26 to be moved to the left back to the position shown in Fig. 2.
When the. tool carrier 54 engages the stop 82, the actuating bar l6 continues its upward movement, forcing the forward end 41 of the latch 46 out of the notch 19 in the tool carrier 54, thus permitting the parts to move relatively to each other until the forward portion 4'! of the latch 46 enters the slot 49 in the upper portion of the tool carrier 54. The parts of the device are now in a position to perform another cycle of operaion.
The machine is provided with a work support 88 (Fig. 1) which may be of the type disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,291,- 754, granted January 21, 1919, on application of Matthias Brock, above referred to. The work support 88 is provided either with a horn button or with a last pin. The work support 88 is mounted on a vertically movable post 92 which is mounted in bearings 94 and 96 secured to the front of the column 19 and is adapted to be moved upwardly upon depression of a treadle 98, as will be made apparent from an inspection of the drawings of the patent just mentioned above. The lower portion of the post 92 is provided with a pair of rollers RG2 which are engaged by inclined surfaces formed on wedges I94 which are moved forwardly by bell crank levers I86 connected by a link I88 to a cam formed in the head of the machine.
Although the construction and operation of the parts of the machine have been described in detail it may be well at this point to review briefly the operation of the machine. When the clutch actuating treadle is depressed the machine is put into operation and the actuating bar [6 moves downwardly under the influence of the spring 32. The end 41 of the latch 45 is in engagement with the tool carrier 54, as shown in Fig. 2, and the tool 34 is moved toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole. When the tool 34 meets an excessive resistance, the latch 46 yields and the tool 3 and the tool carrier 54 come to rest. The actuating bar it continues its downward movement and the cam rolls 64 on the bell crank lever 56 engage the cam surfaces 58, thereby causing the bell crank lever 58 to move in a clockwise direction to withdraw the tool 34 from the work. At this time the inclined surface 18 on the lower end of the actuating bar I6 engages the inclined surface it on the block E4 which moves the plate 26 to sever a fastening and to transfer the fastening into the path of movement of the tool 34. After the tool 34 has been withdrawn from the work the upper part of the tool carrier 54 is engaged by a projection 12 on the actuating bar IS. The actuating bar i6 and the carrier 54 then move downwardly as a unit to insert a fastening in the hole in the work piece. After the fastening has been inserted the actuating bar and the connections to the tool carrier 54 are moved upwardly until the tool carrier 54 strikes the stop 82. The actuating bar It continues its upward movement until the parts of the machine are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and during return movement of the actuating bar N the plate 26 is returned to its original position. The machine stops with the parts in readiness to perform another cycle of operations.
