My invention relates to means for fastening lock cylinders to lock casings, and particularly casings of mortise locks. Many methods for the fastening of cylinders to locks and lock casings have been designed and developed in the prior art. One method which has been used extensively includes screw-threaded means on the lock case and the cylinder lock whereby the cylinder lock may be screwed into the lock case and thensecured against rotary return movement by holding screws which are operated from the front plate of the door lock, and which are only accessible when the door is in open position.
Additional means have been devised for inserting a cylinder into a lock case, and securing the cylinder directly to the lock case by screw-threaded means, and certain of such screw-threaded means have been designed to be controlled by locking cylinders.
All of these prior art methods for fastening lock, cylinders in door locks require that the cylinders, be, fastened to the lock case per se by means cooperating directly with the cylinder and lock case. All such means require considerable manipulation of the cylinder relatively to the lock, and permit release of the lock cylinder by anyone when the door carrying the lock is in open position, at which time the usual screws holding the lock cylinder are accessible. Otherwise, it is necessary to utilize extra cylinders whose sole function is to retain the main locking cylinders as was indicated in the preceding paragraph.
The present invention relates to a method for fastening lock cylinders to door locks whereby such prior art defects are obviated. My invention contemplates especially the locking of a pair of lock cylinders relatively to each other, and therefore relatively to a lock case located therebetween. It contemplates also an arrangement whereby the means for fastening the two cylinders together are inaccessible except to an authorized party having a key to the cylinders so secured.
More particularly, my invention resides in an arrangement whereby a pair of cylinders may readily be fitted into or onto a lock case, there being locking means carried by the cylinders whereby the cylinders may be locked to each other, and therefore, against removal relatively to the lock case. As a subsidiary invention, where only a single cylinder is used, I contemplate having a similar interlocking engagement between means carried by the lock case and the cylinder.
As a further feature of my invention I locate the interlocking means between the two' cylinders or between the single cylinder and the lock casing, so that it is impossible to release said interlocking means except through a hole in one of the cylinders or the single cylinder, which hole is accessible or unobstructed only when the key plug of the cylinder is rotated to a definite position, whereupon a tool may be inserted into the hole to operate the interlocking means.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a partial section and elevations of a pair of cylinders which are locked relatively to one another, while Fig. 2 is a front View of the right hand cylinder of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking pawl used in connection with my invention. Fig. 4 is a section taken through a modification in which the pins to which the outside lock cylinder is secured are carried by the lock case. Fig- 5 is a view showing the operation of the pawl in the cylinders of Figs. 1, 2, and 4 by a tool when the cylinder plug has been properly rotated.
Referring now more particularly to the.draw-. ing, reference numeral I indicates a standard form of pin tumbler cylinder lock having secured. thereto a pair of rod detents 3 and 4. The reference numeral 2 indicates the right hand cyline der which is similar in locking. The right hand cylinder 2 also carries therein a locking pawl 6 rotatable on pivot .B and spring, pressed by the spring I and having a portion-II] which is adapted to rest in a cutout sectionu5 of the rod detent 3 whenever the two cylinders are placed in the cooperative position illustrated in Fig. 1. The two cylinders are each equipped with lugs 8 adapted to enter holes or special perforations 8 in the lock casing I5 so as to secure the cylinders against rotation relatively to the lock casing. The cylinder 2 is also equipped with a bore 9 leading to a point under the head I2 of the cylinder plug I2 and which is only accessible when the cylinder plug I2 is operated by a key adapted to be inserted in the keyway I I of the plug I2, so as to rotate that plug until the bottom part of the keyway II comes opposite the boreT9 as. in Fig. 5. It will then be possible to insert a tool I3 into bore 9 and against the surface fi jof the detent 6 so as to move the detent bodily and release it from its cooperation with the cutout portion 5 of the rod member 3 The operation of the invention will be quite clear to those skilled in the art, but it is thought that a generalized description of its functioni'ng will be helpful.
The cylinders I and 2 are placed on either side of the lock case [5 and are moved into cooperation therewith, the lug members 8 entering perforations 8 and acting to prevent rotation of the cylinders relatively to the lock casing. It will be quite obvious that when the pawl member 6 is opposite the cutout portion 5 of the pin 3, the portion l0 thereof will be snapped by spring 1 into the said cutout portion 5, and the cylinders will be locked against removal relatively to each other. since the cylinders are prevented from rotation relatively to the lock casing, and are prevented from lateral movement relatively to each other, they will be secured permanently relatively .to the lock casing. Should it be desired to remove the cylinders from the lock casing, it is merely necessary to rotate the plug l2 until the bottom of the keyway II comes opposite the hole 9 as in Fig. 5, whereupon a tool l3 may be inserted to withdraw the pawl 6 from the cutout portion 5 of the rod 3, and the lock cylinders may be moved laterally and away from the lock casing. In Fig. 4 I show a modification J of my invention of Fig. 1 in which the pins 3 and 4 are fixed to the lock case I5 so that the cylinder may be secured directly to the lock case in the same manner as it is secured to the locking cylinder l in Fig. 1. It is thought needless to go into further detail regarding the manner in which this particular modification operates.
While I have thus disclosed particular modifications of my invention, it should be understood that I have made a broad contribution to the art, and I feel myself entitled to the wide scope of protection set forth in the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for,
securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween, said interlocking means being operable into engaging relation upon relative movement of said cylinders.
2. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising spring actuated means carried by and interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween.
3. In a look, a pair of lock cylinders, cooperable rod and detent means carried by said cy1inders, said cylinders being movable relatively to each other to join said rod and detent means whereby to secure said cylinders relatively to each other.
4. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween, said interlockin means being operable by relative movement of said cylinders, and key operated means efiective to control the release of said interlocking means.

In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case therebetween, means in one of said cylinders whereby said interlocking means may be reached for operation, a key plug in said cylinder, said means being normally maintained inaccessible by said key plug.
12. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other with said lock case therebetween, and a passage in one of said cylinders through which said interlocking means may be reached for operation.
13. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means carried by one cylinder and extending into the other cylinder for locking engagement therewith, and key operated means in said second cylinder effective to con-j trol the release of said locking engagement.
14. In a lock of the type having a .case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said, cylinders to each other with said lock case therebetween, a passage in one of said cylinders through which said interlocking means may be reached for operation, a key plug in said cylinder, said passage being normally obstructed by the body of said key plug.
15. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means carried by one cylinder and extending into the other cylinder for locking engagement therewith, a passage in said second cylinder through which a tool may enter to release said cylinders from each other, a key plug in said cylinder, and means whereby said passage is obstructed until said key plug is rotated to a predetermined position.
16. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween, said interlocking means being operable into engaging relation upon movement of said cylinders, relatively to one another, and means for preventing rotation of said cylinders relatively to the lock case when secured at the opposite sides of the lock case.
17. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case, comprising spring actuated means carried by and interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween, said spring actuated means being operable into engaging relation upon movement of said cylinders, relatively to one another, and means for preventing rotation of said cylinders relatively to the lock case when secured at the opposite sides of the lock case.
18. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, rod and detent means carried by said cylinders, said cylinders being movable relatively to each other to join said rod and detent means whereby to secure said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case therebetween, and means for preventing rotation of said cylinders relatively to the lock case.
19. In a lock of the type having a case with opposed sides, a pair of lock cylinders, means for securing said cylinders at opposite sides of the lock case, comprising means interlocking said cylinders relatively to each other and with said lock case located therebetween, said interlocking means being operable by relative movement of said cylinders, key operated means adapted to control the operation of said locking means whereby to prevent unauthorized separation of said cylinders, and means for preventing rotation of said cylinders relatively to the lock case.
