This invention relates particularly to a seat adapted for use in railroad coaches and buses, although the invention may be usefully employed elsewhere.
The primary object is to provide an improved seat which can be reversed in direction and which, in the operation of reversing the seat, will be laterally shifted. Another object is to provide a seat construction which permits ready rotation of the seat while at the same time preventing chatterinCr or rocking of the seat upon its pivotal connections with the base members. An additional object is to provide improved means for locking the seat-structure upon its base.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a broken rear view of a car-seat constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side View in elevation; Fig. 3 is a part sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. i is a part sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view, the seat-structure having been removed, and the View being indicated at line 5 of Fig. l; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view, the section being taken as indicated at line 6 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view, the section being taken as indicated at line 1 of Fig. 5.
In the preferred construction shown in the drawings, A designates a base frame which is supported upon standards A; B designates a carriage or sliding block which is mounted upon the frame A; and C designates a seat plate which is secured to the seat structure D and which is pivotally connected to the carriage or sliding blo'ck B; and D designates a seat resting upon seat-plate C.
The base A preferably comprises the end beams I which rest upon the standards A and the longitudinal beams 2 which are connected to the end beams I to form a rectangular frame. A cross piece 3 connects the side beams 2 at an intermediate point; and a middle beam 4, between the side beams 2, extends from one end of the beam I to the cross beam 3. As shown more clearly in Fig. 4, the side beams 2 may be formed in the shape of angle irons soas to provide vertical flanges or sides 5. Secured to the inner edges of the side beams 2 are the retaining strips 5 which are provided with outwardly turned flanges 'I spaced a short distance above the beam 2. The carriage or sliding block B is preferably rectangular in shape and is provided along its underside with a depending edge or ange portion i2. As shown more clearly in Fig. 4, a strip t@ is secured to the flange portion I2 of the block B and extends under the overhanging lip "s of the retaining strip S. By this means, the carriage or block B is slidably secured to the base frame.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the carriage or block B is provided with a large circular opening and a flange ring ill at the edge of the opening. Integrally formed with the upper portion of the flange I-I is an inwardly eX- tending flange lip I5.
The seat plate C, as shown more clearly in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, comprises an annular flange portion I6 adapted to rest upon the flange i4 and lip I5 and attached to engage the front face of flange lip I5; lateral arms Il by which the plate C may be secured to the seat-structure D; and inverted cam casing within the annular flange portion i6. The cam casing I8 is preferably formed as illustrated in Fig. 5, in the shape of two circles which merge at their point of meeting on one side. Y Vc5 In order to actuate the pivoted lever 3|, a bar 32 is located in each of the compartments formed by the Ybracket walls 8 and the side walls 5 and is adapted to raise the outer end of lever 3|. Each of the bars 32 is rigidly connected to a shaft 33 which is rotatablyrmounted in the wall 5 of the base frame. As shown more clearly in Figs. 5
Yand 7, the treadle member 34 -equipped with a bar 35 which is rigidly connected to the shaft 33, is used to rotate the shaft. Bar 35 is'normally held in raised position by means of a spring 36 which engages a rear extension 31 of bar 315.
In assembling the plate VC with the carriage or sliding block B, the annular flange portion I6 of the seat-plate C is brought into alinement with the annular flange |4 of block B so that the top portion of flange i6 rests upon the flange |4 and the lower portion of flange I6 bears against the front face of the flange lip l5. As shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, a ring track 38 is secured Vjust below the flange lip I5 and ball-bearings 39 are secured between the ring 38 and an annular plate 49. The annular plate 4|! is secured by means'of bolts 4| to theV plate C. If desired, a ring 42 maybe interposed between the plate 49 and the seat-plate C. With this arrangement, the plate C and block B may be secured tightly together while the Vball bearings 39 interposed therebetween diminish the friction which would otherwise be present. l
The operation may be stated briefly:
When it is desired to rotate the seat-structure D, the pedal member 34 may be depressed, thereby rotating a shaft 33 and raising Vthe bars 32. One of the bars 32 engages the free end of the pivoted lever 3| and raises it together with the rigid pin 29 which is secured to the plunger 24. In this way the plunger 24 is withdrawn from engagement with the recess 21 of the sliding block B and the parts are free to be rotated.
As the seat-structure D is turned to effect reversal, the cam stud I9 moving in the cam track I9 causes the plate C and the block B upon which it rests to move laterally upon the base frame. When the plunger 24 reaches the recess V2l on the opposite side of the sliding block, it
immediately drops into the recess and locks the partsY against further rotation. Meanwhile, the cam I9 has traversed the cam track in one of the two circles. If it is desired to continue the rotation of the seat in the same direction, the treadle member 34 may be operated to release the locking members, as hereinbefore described, and the rotation of the seat may be continued. During this operation, the cam stud passes around the curved track of the other circle and nally reaches the point from which it started. At this point, the plunger 24 drops into the recess within the block member C and the parts are again in their initial position. If desired, the seat-structure maybe rotated in either direction and the direction of the'rotation changed at any point. The oppositely disposed bars 32 permit the locking members to bedisengaged at either side of the seat structure.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations Vshould beV understood therefrom. but the appended claims should be` construed as broadly as permissible in View of the prior art.
We claim:
1. In combination, a base, a block slidably mounted thereon, a seat plate equipped with a cam track and connected to said block by an annular connection extending about said cam track, and a cam stud carried by said base member adapted to engage said cam track. Y
2. In combination, a base member, a carriage slidably mounted thereon, and a platemember provided with an annular bearing connection to said carriage permitting rotation of said plate member, said base member and said plate member being provided with a cam stud and a cam track located within said annular connection.
3. In combination, a base, a block slidably mounted thereon, a seat plate pivotally carried b-y said block and equipped with a pair of substantially circular cam tracks communicating on one side to form a continuous track, and a cam stud secured to said base and adapted. to engage said track. Y
4. In combination, a base, a carriage slidably mounted on said base, a seat-plate pivotally secured to and carried b-y said carriage and provided with a continuous cam track resembling in shape the ligure 8, and a cam stud secured to the base and adapted to engage said track.
5. In combination, a base, a block slidably i mounted thereon and equipped with anV annular bearing, a seat plate equipped with an annular bearing rctatively engaging saidblock bearing, said plate being provided also with a cam track disposed within said bearing, and a cam stud secured to said base and adapted to engage Vsaid track. 6. In combination, a base member, a block slidably mounted thereon and equipped with an annular flange bearing, a seat plate equipped With an annular flange bearing rotatively engaging said block ilange, said plate being also provided With a cam slot, and a cam stud secured to said base and adapted to engage said slot.
7. A seat comprising, a base, a block slidably mounted thereon, a seat-plate pivoltally secured to said block, said seat-plate being provided with a pair of substantially annular cam tracks communicating on one side, removable hard metal bearing inserts secured in said tracks adjacent the points of communication between said annular track portions, and a cam stud carried by said base adapted to engage said tracks.
8. A seat comprising, a base, a block slidably secured to said base, a seat-plate pivotally secured to and carried by said block, said plate being provided with a curved cam track, a camstud carried by said base and adapted to engage said track, and releasable locking means adapted to secure said seat-plate to said block.
9. A seat comprising, a base, fa block slidably secured to said base, a seat plate pivotallyV secured to and carried by said block, said plate being provided withl a curved cam track, a cam stud car- Aried by said base and adapted to engage 'said track, releasable locking means adapted to secure said seat-plate tof said block, said means comprising a spring pressed plunger adapted to engage recesses in said plate and block, and treadle' actuated levers adapted to raise said plunger.
