Description
Jan. 28, 1936. E. BOURLAND DISPENSING CONTAINER Filed March 19, 1935 Patented Jan. 28, 1936 UNITED STATES DISPENSING CONTAINER Eli Bourland, Jersey City, N. J., assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York, N. Y.
a corporation of New York Application March 19, 1935, Serial No. 11,866
1 Claim.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a dispensing container.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type which is simple in construction and wherein the parts which form the dispensing members of the container are of onepiece drawn metal and rotatably connected one to another for selectively dispensing the contents of the container.
Referring to the drawing- Figure 1 is a view partly in side view and partly in section of the improved container with the dispensing members assembled; V
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the container;
Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the reduced neck portion of the container;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the cap which forms the closure for the reduced neck portion, and
Fig. 6 is a plan view partly in section of the cap.
The invention is directed to a container for dispensing powders of any type wherein the pouring opening and sifting openings are provided with a rotatable closure for selectively covering or uncovering the same. The container comprises a body portion having ends joined thereto, one of said ends having a reduced neck portion which is integrally closed across its upper face and is provided with suitable sifting and pouring openings. The reduced neck portion midway its ends is provided with an annular groove. A
cap is provided for the reduced neck portion and has a depending skirt portion which terminates in a bead at its lower end and has an annular projecting portion provided with knurling at its upper end which may be grasped by the hand for rotating the same. The cap is so dimensioned as to freely turn about the reduced neck portion and has a portion of the skirt thereof beaded into the groove in the reduced neck for securing the same in place. The cap is provided with a dispensing opening which may be selectively 45 brought into register with the respective openings in the upper portion of the neck.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a container embodying the invention is shown at 1 having ends 8 and 9 joined thereto. The end 8 50 has a central opening and has a reduced neck portion l0 joined thereto by crimping of the metal of the lower end of the reduced neck portion it about a portion of the metal surrounding the opening in the end 8. The reduced neck portion 55 is integrally closed at its upper end and is provided with sifting openings l I and a pouring opening l2. The reduced neck portion I0 is also provided with an annular inwardly extending groove l3 which is disposed midway the upper and lower 60 portions thereof.
A cap I4 is provided for closing the container. Said cap has a depending skirt [5 which tenninates at its lower end in a bead IS. The cap is also provided with an annular projecting portion I! which is embossed with suitable knurling 5 which may be grasped by the hand. A dispensing opening [8 is formed in the top of the cap which is adapted to be brought into and out of register with the dispensing openings l I and the pouring opening l2 in the top of the neck. The skirt I5 10 of the cap is so dimensioned as to freely fit over the neck portion ill of the container and has a portion [9 thereof beaded into the groove l3 in the neck whereby the cap will be held from endwise movement and yet left free to rotate about 15 the neck.
The parts [4 and [0 which constitute the dispensing members for the container are preferably of one-piece drawn metal. By this manner of forming said parts, time and labor is saved in 2 manufacturing. It will be readily seen that in constructing the dispensing members in this manner, any seams or other obstructions which might prevent the free rotation of the cap about the neck are dispensed with.
It is obviou that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended 30 claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A dispensing container comprising a body portion having ends joined thereto, one of said ends having a reduced neck portion having an integral closure end in which are formed sifter openings and a pouring opening, said neck intermediate its ends having a groove which surrounds the same, a cap for said neck having a closure end and a depending skirt, said closure end being shaped so as to contact with the integral end of said neck for closing the sifting openings and the pouring opening therein, said closure end of the cap having an opening therethrough adapted to be brought into register with the pouring opening and the sifting openings, the skirt of said cap having the lower end thereof rolled into a bead and the upper portion of the skirt adjacent the closure end shaped to provide an annular projecting portion which is knurled for the turning of the cap, said skirt intermediate said knurled projecting portion and said bead having an inwardly extending circular rib adapted to fit within the groove in the neck portion, said rib and groove being so disposed that the end of the closure is held in close contact with the end of the neck.
