'This invention relates to a novel form of container capable of being destroyed after use, and to a dispensing means whereby the content of the container may be discharged in increments without subjecting the contents to the action of air or contamination from other sources. The invention is particularly directed toward a container and dispensing means whereby a relatively viscous fluid or emulsion such as mayonnaise, may be dispensed in a sanitary manner and. all of the contents of the container removed therefrom without exposing such contents to contaminating influences.
Heretofore, bulk materials such as mayonnaise,
have been dispensed from crooks or jars into which a utensil such as a spoon, was dipped in order to withdraw the desired quantity. During such withdrawal, the contents of the container were exposed to the atmosphere, permitting vari- 2J ous forms of impurities, dust, etc., to be deposited therein. Furthermore, it was extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove all of the contents of such containers.
The present invention, however, relates to a 25 form of container which is destructible, thereby preventing its repeated use. Furthermore, during the dispensing operation, the mayonnaise is discharged from the container into the smaller package delivered to the ultimate consumer but 30 at no time is the bulk of the mayonnaise exposed to contaminating influences. Moreover, the dispensing unit is readily removable from the container for sterilizing purposes.
These and other advantages will become ap parent from the detailed description of a preferred form of container and dispensing apparatus described hereinafter. In such description, reference will be had to the appended drawings, in which:

It is to be remembered that in the transportation and handling of a product such as mayonnaise, the product needs be handled with care as it is possible to cause separation of the ingredients constituting the product by undue agitation or the like. For this reason, the dispensing apparatus has been particularly designed to permit the discharge of quantities of mayonnaise 10 from a container without subjecting it to undue agitation or changes in pressure.
As shown most particularly in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusively, the entire apparatus comprises a conical stand I provided with a vertically extending 15 opening 2 and a horizontal rest spaced from the bottom of the stand I. The rest may include a trough-like member 3 supported by means of horizontal braces 4 and 5 attached to the inner Walls of the stand I. Preferably, the braces 4 and 5 are also attached to reinforcing legs 6 and l which may terminate at the bottom in vacuum grip or other antiskid supporting members 8. The legs 6 and l and the rest 3 are proportioned so as to place the feeder, generally indicated at 0, a sufficient height above the bottom of the support I to permit the introduction of small containers into which the mayonnaise is to be discharged.
The feeder lll comprises a cylindrical body portion provided with a bore l i. The lower wall of the body portion may be hexagonal in cross section so as to permit its reception and retention in a similarly shaped rest 3. Furthermore, the lower wall of the body may be provided with a protuberance l2 adapted to extend through a port I 3 formed in the rest 3 and be held in such rest by means of a sliding lock I4 provided with bifurcated ends and a finger grip l5, as more clearly shown in Fig. 6. The rear wall it is preferably inclined to the vertical, as shown in Fig. 3, whereas the front member is provided with an outlet H. The front member indicated at l8 may be removably attached to the body of the device as by means of the screws IS, a suitable gasket 20 being inserted between the front portion l8 and the end of the body portion it. The side walls of the body portion I 6 may be provided with inwardly extending keys 21 and 22 adapted to slidably engage with notches cut in a piston 23 slidably positioned within the bore H. The piston 23 preferably lies in a plane parallel to the rear wall [6 and is therefore inclined to the vertical. The piston 23 is attached to a rod 24 extending through the front member at a point adjacent the rear wall It.
l8 and terminating in knob or handle 25. The piston rod 24 may also pass through a suitable packing gland, indicated at 26.
The front member 18 is provided with a' downwardlycurved discharge port ll. At either side pressed upwardly in a yielding manner by a similar spring 32. The closure member 28 (shown in detail in Figs. 6 and '7) is provided with a handle 33 and a tapering finger 34 forming a recess or bay 35 adapted to receive the pin 34;

.The feeding device is also provided with an inlet port indicated at 36 which preferably is'positioned The di ameter of the port 36 should be insufiicient to extend over the entire length of the bore H and preferably the port 38 does, not extend beyond the mid length of the bore H. The inlet port 35 may be provided with internal screw threads as indicated at 48, adapted to threadedly engage with the metallic'threaded member M carried upon the apex portion of the container 42.
' The container 52 is preferably of parchmentized paper or waterproofed board and is conical in form. The base of the container be formed of a fiberboard disc 43 provided with a beveled edge, said disc being inserted into the base of the cone and stapled thereto as indicated at G l. If desired, an'insoluble adhesive may also be used. Great difliculty has been experienced in placing a cap upon the apex of the cone. It has been found, however, that a molded thin metal threaded cap, such as the cap 4!,may be firmly attached to the apex of the container 42 by first cementing a strip or strips around the apex end of the cone, as indicated at 55. These strips 45 arecut along a curve somewhat as indicated in Fig. 8. After being cementedupon the cone 42, the metal cap member 4| is slipped thereover and crimped atrt and 41. This construction retains the threaded metallic end member 4| firmly upon the cone. In use the container '42 is filled withmayonnaise or similar substance and the metallic cap is screwed upon the apex end in contact with the threaded member 4|. These containers rest on the broad base 43 and are relatively stable. Five gallon containers of this shape'are readily handled, 'When it is desired to install the completed device in a store, the feeding device it is threadedly connected to the apex of the contamer-42 and the entire assembly then positioned within the stand I. The rest 3 supports and locks the feeder In in position. A part of the weight of the container is supported by the upper end of the stand I. By opening the closure member "2e and manipulating the plunger 25, mayonn'aise is withdrawn from the container and discharged through the spout ll. Mayonnaise that may have slipped between the'rear wall I6 and the face of the piston 23 of the member H by the mem pivoted upon the (while the piston was in its forward position) moves upwardly and over theupper edge of the piston 23 when such piston is moved rearwardly.
By reason of the forwardly inclined rear wall and piston, the mayonnaise performs this movement smoothly and without undue agitation so that no separation or breaking of the mayonnaiseemulsion results. Sufiicient air appears to be admitted through the container to permit uninterrupted gravity flow into the feeder. If desired, however, a few pin holes may be made adjacent the top 43 after the container 42 and the feeder it are in position.
7 k Although a specific form of feeding device has been described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that numerous changes may be made in its construction. The essential elements of my combination are a stand adapted to receive and hold .a dispenser, together with a container which is also supported by said stand.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a stand provided with a vertically extending opening and a rest positioned therein in spaced relation to the bottom of the stand, a conical destructible container provided with an externally threaded lip, a feeding device threadedly connected to said container lip, said feeding device being provided with a horizontal bore, an inlet port communicating with said container in the rear half of said bore, a forwardly inclined rear wall, a forwardly inclined reciprocably mounted piston within said bore, and a valved outlet in the front wall of said bore, and means for locking said feeding device upon said rest while said container is supportingly retained by the top of said stand.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a conical stand provided with an enlarged base and a constricted top, a vertically extending opening in the wall of said stand, and a rest positioned therein spaced from the bottom of the stand; a conical fibrous and destructible container comprising a conical body portion, a fiat base, a plurality of added thicknesses of fibrous material cemented to the exterior of the body portion at the apex, and a substantially cylindrical lip member crimped over the said added thicknesses and to the body portion adjacent said apex; a feeding device provided with a horizontal bore and an inlet port in the rear half thereof, means for connecting said feeding device at said port with said lip member of said container, and means for locking said feeding device upon said rest while said container is supportingly retained by the top of said stand.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a conical stand provided with an enlarged base and a constricted top, a vertically extending opening in the wall of said stand, and a rest positioned therein spaced from the bottom of the stand; a conical fibrous and destructible container comprising a conical body portion, a fiat base, a plurality of added thicknesses of fibrous material cemented to the exterior of the body portion at the apex, and a substantially cylindrical lip member crimped over the said added thicknesses and to the body portion adjacent said apex; a feeding device provided with a horizontal bore and an inlet port in the rear half thereof, means for connecting said feeding device at said port with said lip member of said container, said feeding device including a forwardly inclined rear wall, a valved front wall, and a forwardly inclined reciprocably mounted piston within said horizontal bore, and means for looking said feeding device upon said rest while said container is supportingly retained by the top of said stand.
8. A dispensing container for mayonnaise and y;
the like, comprising a conical body portion of fibrous material, a flat base member provided with a conically beveled edge inserted into the base of said cone and stapled thereto, a plurality of added thicknesses of fibrous material cemented 3 to the exterior of the body portion at the apex thereof, and a substantially cylindrical threaded metallic member crimped over said added thicknesses and to the body portion at said apex.
