Description

Patented Jan. 2.1,A 1936 uwl'rlezo` STATES PATENT oFFicE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pencil Sharpeners.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pencil Sharpener of the type that may be permanently attached to a pencil and when r0- tated on the pencil produces a tapered point on the latter with the lead or carbon of the pencil projecting through the Sharpener.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener of the foregoing ch'aracter that has threaded engagement with the pencil with said threaded engagement providing an interlocking connection between the pencil and Sharpener to prevent loss of the latter.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a pencil Sharpener having threaded engagement with a pencil with a thread cutting device carried by the Sharpener for cutting a thread into the pencil body in advance of the threaded portion of the Sharpener to facilitate rotation of the Sharpener on the pencil during operation thereof.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a pencil equipped with a Sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 iS a Side elevational view of the Sharpener detached from the pencil, showing the pencil Sharpening blade, threaded portion and thread cutting member;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the pencil with the Sharpener detached and showing the threads ther'eon cut bythe sharpener; Y
Figure 4 is a longitudinal Sectional view of the Sharpener;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Figure 1, Showing the thread cutting element for the pencil carried 'by the Sharpener, with a thread partially cut into the pencil.
'Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the pencil Sharpener I0 is adapted to be attached to one end of the pencil II and may be permanently carried thereby or detached there` from at will. The pencil Sharpener I9 comprises a. conical portion I2 provided with a longitudinally extending slotted opening I3 with a cutting (Cl. 1Z0-87) blade I4 secured as at I5 to one edge of the opening I3 and with the cuttingv edge of the blade I4 curved and directed inwardly ofthe conical portion I2 of the Sharpener as clearly shown in Figure 5. The larger end of the conical portion I2 continues in a cylindrical threaded portion I6 and a terminal end plain portion I1. A triangular thread cutting finger I8 is struckout from the cylindrical portion I1 of the sharpener and has the pointed end thereof directed or lo bent inwardly of the Sharpener as shown in Figure 6.
In the use of the Sharpener, the Same is placed upon one end of the pencil II and thevsharpener or pencil relatively rotated, the finger I8 being 15 in advance on the pencil with respect to the threaded portion I6 of the Sharpener for cutting the threads I9 on the pencil II as shown in Figure 3. The threaded portion I6 of the sharpener moves into threaded engagement with the 20 threaded portion I9 on the pencil and the parts are thereby interlockingly connected and during relative rotation, the blade I4 cuts a tapered end 20 on the pencil I I and correspondingly Shapes the pencil lead 2I that projects through the 25 Smaller end of the conical portion I2 of the Sharpener I0. The pencil may be rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow 22 in Figure 6 with the finger I8 cutting the threads I9 in the pencil II shown. The finger I8 cuts the threads 30 I9 in advance of the threaded portion I6 of the Sharpener to facilitate threaded engagement be` tween the Sharpener and pencil. The linger I8 is of a resilient character so .that pressure vthereon determines the depth of out of the threads I9 on the pencil II and the pointed end of the finger I8 when pressure thereon is relieved will be spaced from the bottom of the thread groove I9 -so that reverse rotation of the sharpener is unhindered when it is desired to remove the Sharpener from the pencil.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and while there is herein shownl and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the Spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
In a pencil Sharpener, a conical body portion, a cylindrical threaded portion at the larger end of the conical portion, and a plain cylindrical terminal end outwardly of the threaded portion and of the same diameter as the threaded por' 55 am uw of the latter, said thread cutting anger being resilient and exposed at the outersid'e of the f plain cylindrical portion for manual pressure, whereby pressure thereon regulates the depth of the thread cut in a pencil.
