This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a needle attachment for sewing machines.
The-invention has for an object the construction of a needle guard attachment which is characterized. by great visibility so that the needle may be easily seen; and which is capable of easy attachment upon the presser foot.
Still further the invention proposes the arrangement of a' needle guard in amanner so as togivemaximum protection.
Still further, the invention proposes constructing the needle guard attachment from a sheet, to provide a portion thereof adapted to be clamped down by a thumb screw which attaches the presser foot to the presser bar, to provide a portionextending vertically along the side of the finger of the presser foot, to provide a horizontal" continuation extending real-wards near the shank of the presser foot, and to provide a portion vertically along the other side of the presser foot.
Still further the invention particularly proposes providing the portion" for clamping down by the thumb screw with an opening through which the thumb screw may pass.
As another object of this invention an arrangement is proposed whereby the needle guard is provided with a portion extending from the horizontal continuation upwards and attached upon a collar slidably arranged and clamped" in position on the presser foot rod.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a portion 'swivelled upon the horizontal continuation of the needle guard in a manner so as to be capable of assuming a position transversely or longitudinally to be secured by the thumb screw which holds the presser foot, or to a collar slidably arranged on the presser bar.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of a guard as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and. of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features are more particularly set forth.

The needleguard attachment for sewing machines, according'to this invention, comprises a portion I!) for clamping by the thumb screw H which attaches the presser foot H! to the presser bar l3 of a' sewing machine having the conventional type of needle I 4 for cooperation with the presser foot. Integral and extending from the portion I 0 is a portion l5 which extends along the sides of the long fingers l6 of the presser foot. The presser foot has a short finger I"! on the other side.
A horizontal continuation I8' from the portion l5 extends rearwards near the shank of the presser foot and connects with a vertical portion 19'- extended longitudinally along the short finger l1.
The portion- ID is provided with an opening 20 through which the threaded portion of the screw l I passes. The horizontal continuation I8 is formed by merely bending material "from the portion l5 rearwards. The portion I 9 is formed by bending material from the continuation l8 downwards. The front portion 15 is formed with an opening 2| which is merely for the purpose of increasing the visibility of the device. The upper edge of the portion I 5 is formed with a curved cutout 22 serving toincrease the visibility from the side. The portion I9 is substantially of U-shape as clearly illus trated in Fig. 3, and at the bottom is provided with a projection 23 adapted to engage against the top of the short finger 16. This projection slightly spaces other portions of the portion Hi from the presser foot so as to further increase the visibility of the guard.
In Figs. 5 and 6, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed in which the needle guard comprises a rear portion IS, a front portion l9 joined by a continuation l8, and an upwardly extending continuation 24 from one edge of the continuation I8 terminating immediately adjacent a collar 25 slidable upon the presser' bar I3. This collar is held in various adjusted positions by the thumb clamping screw 26. A clamping screw 21 serves to attach the continuation 24 to the collar 25. With this arrangement it is possible to remove the presser foot I2 without disturbing the guard. According to the previousarrangement, when the screw II is loosened the presser foot may beremoved and the guard will maintain its position on the clamping screw but swing since it is no longer clamped in place. The upper end of the presser foot I2 is formed with a conventional grooved portion which slidably engages a portion 29 upon the presser rod I3.
In Figs. '7 and 8, another variation of the invention has been disclosed in which the main portion of the guard is identical to the forms previously described differing only in the portions by which the guard is attached in place. More particularly, this guard comprises the horizontal continuation I8 which is connected with the portion I5 and with the portion I9. The portions I8, I5 and I9 are constructed as to details similar to the corresponding parts previously mentioned and these details are indicated by the same reference numerals. The support portion 3!! is formed with a cylindrical head 3| at the bottom engaging a bracket 32 which is attached upon the top side of the continuation I8 forming a swivel connection so that the portion 30 may be swivelled as desired. A thumb clamp screw 33 threadedly engages through the underside of the continuation I8 against the head 3,I to clamp the portion 30 in any position of rotation. The portion 30 is formed with offset parts 34 and' 35 formed with apertures 36 respectively. With this arrangement the portion 36 may be placed so as to be substantially in the same plane with the continuation I8 and then the guard may be attached to a collar similar to the collar 25 upon the presser foot rod I3. To attach the needle guard by the same screw which clamps the presser bar, it is merely necessary to first loosen the screw 33, to turn. the portion 30 at right angles, next to clamp the screw 33, in position to hold the portion 30 in its new position, and finally engage the clamping screw II through the opening 36 of the ofiset part 35.
In Fig. 9, a vertical support member 24' has been provided and is soldered, or otherwise secured to the underside of continuation member I8. This support member is placed adjacent the bar of presser foot I2, to keep the guard more solidly in place.
In Fig. 10, the presser bar I2 is secured directly to support member 24' by soldering, welding or any other manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A needle attachment for sewing machines, comprising a front portion for extending along the long finger of a presser foot and having a horizontal continuation extending near the shank of the presser foot, and a rear portion from said continuation extending vertically along the short finger of the presser foot, a support portion swivelly mounted on the horizontal continuation and adapted to be clamped upon a support collar or presser rod, means for holding said horizontal continuation fixed in various swivelled positions, and said support portion having ofiset parts with openings for selective engagement with a clamp screw coacting with said collar or presser rod.
2. A needle attachment for sewing machines, comprising a front portion for extending along the long finger of a presser foot and having a horizontal continuation extending near the shank of the presser foot, and a rear portion from said continuation extending vertically along the short finger of the presser foot, a support portion swivelly mounted on the horizontal continuation and adapted to be clamped upon a support collar or presser rod, means for holding said horizontal continuation fixed in various swivelled positions, comprising a thumb clamping screw threadedly engaging through the continuation and against a portion of said swivelled connection, and said support portion having offset parts with openings for selective engagement with a clamp screw coacting with said collar or presser rod.
