Renewed May 1, 1935 31 Claims. (c1. 1 21-38) This invention relates to pressing machines such as garment or laundry ironing presses and particularly to means for controlling the operation of such machines.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel control mechanism for the power operating means of a pressing machine, which control mechanism will require the operator to use bothhands to effect closing of the pressing machine under light pressure, and to use both hands to effect the application of final heavy pressure to the pressing machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a two-hand control mechanism for controlling the closing of a pressing machine under light pressure, and to provide other two-hand control mechanism for applying final heavy pressure, the heavy pressure'control mechanism being inoperative until after the press is closed under light pressure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a control mechanism for closing a pressing machine under light pressure, and a control mechanism for applying final heavy pressure, and to provide means between the light pressure and heavy pressure control mechanisms by which the operation of either of the control mechanisms will restore the other control mechanism to inoperative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide separate two-hand control means for effecting light and heavy pressure respectively, and to interconnect each manual of one two-hand control mechanism with a manual of the other twohand control mechanism so that operation of any manual will restore the corresponding manual of the other control mechanism to inoperative position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear and will be pointed out as the description proceeds.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary diagrammatic side elevation of a pressing machine of the type to which the invention is applied.
Figure 2 is a schematic showing, mostly in section of the motor means for operating the press shown in Figure 1, together with the con-. trol means therefor in accordance with the invention.
General construction of press. Figure 1 The invention is designed for use with pressing machines having opening and closing movement such as the pressing machine shown in Figure 1. A pressing head II is secured to a yoke l2 pivotally mounted at I3 on a pressing machine frame I 4. The yoke I2 is rocked on its pivotal connection [3 tomove the pressing head ll into 5 and out of pressing contact with a buck l5 which is supported by a neck l6 mounted on the pressing machine frame l4. The press is normaly held in open position by a spring H which is connected at its upper end to the yoke l2 and 10 at its lower end to a leg of the pressing machine frame l4.
. A link is pivotally connected to the yoke l2 at 2|, and is pivotally connected at 22 with a sleeve 24 which is carried by a link 25. The link 15 25 is pivotally connected at 28 with the pressing machine frame l4. The link 25 is slidably mounted in a bushing 30 and extends into the sleeve 24. A spring 32 is mounted on the link 25, within the sleeve 24, and presses against the bushing 20 30 and a head 33, of the link 25. The sleeve 24 and link 25 form an extendible link of a toggle of which the link 20 is the other link.
The press is closed under light pressure by a fluid motor 35 of low power which is oscillatively 25 mounted at 31 on the pressing machine frame l4 and has a piston rod 36 pivotally connected at 38 with an extension formed on the link 20. As the press moves into closed position the toggle composed of the link 20, and the sleeve 24 and 30 link 25, moves into straightened position, as shown in Figure 1, so that the lower end of the link 20 moves into a slot 40 formed in the end of a pry-bar 42 which is pivotally mounted at 43 on the pressing machine frame I 4. Heavy pres sure is applied to the pressing elements by a motor 45 of highpower which is oscillativ ely mounted at 46 on the pressing machine frame, and has a piston rod 47' pivotally connected at 48 with the pry-bar 42. The mechanism thus far 40 described forms no part of the present invention. The low power motor 35 and the high power motor 45 provide motor means which closes the press first with a low power step and then with a high power step. 45
Operation and control for light pressure The closing of the press under light pressure is controlled by push buttons 50 and 5|. The push button 50 operates the valves in a valve casing 53 50 which contains a normally closed spring-pressed intake valve 54 and a normally open exhaust valve55. The valves 54 and 55 are connected together by a spacer rod 56 so that they operate as a unit. A valve stem 51 formed on the exhaust 55 valve 55 projects through one end'of the valve casing 53. A rocker arm 58 is pivotally mounted at 59 on the valve casing 53. A lever 60, pivotally mounted at 52, transmits motion from the push button 50 to the rocker arm v5B which contacts 60' the valve casing 53.
A diaphragm chamber 64 is formed on the lower part of the valve casing 53 and contains a diaphragm 65 which operates against a plunger 66. The plunger 66 extends through one end of the diaphragm chamber 64 into contact with one end of the rocker arm 58. When pressure is applied behind the diaphragm 65, in a manner later to be described, the plunger 66 will be moved outwardly against the rocker arm 58 to hold the rocker arm 58 and the valves in the valve casing 53 in operative position.
Working fluid from a fluid supply line 68 is supplied through a pipe 19 to the valve casing 53. When the intake valve 54 is open working fluid from the pipe 19 will pass around the open intake valve 54, through the valve casing 53, and through a pipe 12 which connects with the motor 35. The motor 35 includes a cylinder 14 having a piston 1| therein which is secured to. the piston rod 36. A pipe 13 connectsthe pipe 12 with a valve casing 15.
The valve casing 15 contains an exhaust valve 16 formed with a valve stem 11 which projects through one end of the valve casing into contact with a rocker arm 19 which is pivotally mounted at 89 on the front of the valve casing 15.
A diaphragm chamber 82 is formed on the lower part of the valve casing 15 and contains a dia phragm 84 which operates against a plunger 96. The plunger 86 extends through the end of the diaphragm chamber 82 into contact with one end of the rocker arm 19. When working fluid under pressure is supplied to the diaphragm chamber 82, behind the diaphragm 84, the plunger 86 will be moved outwardly against the rocker arm 19 and will hold the rocker arm 19 and the exhaust valve 16 in operated position. Motion of the push button 5| is transmitted through a lever 88, which is pivotally mounted at 89, to the rocker arm 19 which operates against the valve stem 11 to move the exhaust valve 16 into closed position.
Operation of the push button 59 will open the supply or intake valve 54 and close the exhaust valve 55 so that working fluid from the fluid supply line 68 may flow through the pipe 19, around the open intake valve 54, through the valve casing 53, and pipe I2, to the cylinder 14 of the motor 35. If the push button 5| has not been operated however, the exhaust valve 16 will be open and working fluid from the pipe 12 will escape through the pipe 13, valve casing 15, and past the open exhaust valve 16, so that pressure in the pipe 12 will not build up enough to move the piston 1|. If the push button 5| is operated to close the exhaust valve 16 pressure in the pipe 12 will build up and this working fluid under pressure will operate the piston 16 to move the piston rod 36 upwardly and close the press under light pressure.
A port opening 99 is formed in the wall of the cylinder 14 in such a position that it will be uncovered by the piston 1| at substantially the same time that the pressing jaws come in contact. The port opening 99 communicates with a chamber 92 which is connected by a pipe 94, and a branch pipe 96, with a valve casing 91 which contains a spring-loaded check valve 98. A pipe 99 connects the other end of the valve casing 91 to a pipe I99, which leads to the diaphragm chamber 82, and to a pipe I9I, which leads to the diaphragm chamber 64.

When the port 99 is thus uncovered working fluid from the cylinder 14 will flow through the port opening 99, chamber 92, pipes 94 and 96, past the check valve 98, through the valve casing 91, pipe 99, and through the pipes I99 and |9| to the diaphragm chambers 82 and 64 respectively. When working fluid is thus supplied to the diaphragm chambers 82 and 64 the diaphragms therein will be operated to move the plungers 86 and 66 respectively into position to hold their respective valves in operated position. When the valves are thus locked in operated position by the pressure in the diaphragm chambers it is no longer necessary for the operator to hold the push buttons 59 and 5| depressed.
When the push button 59 is released a spring I94 returns the bell crank 69 and push button 59 to normal position. When the push button 5| is released a spring I95 returns the bell crank 88 and push button 5| to normal position.
Operation and control for heavy pressure The high power fluid motor 45 is operated, as previously described, to apply final heavy pressure to the pressing jaws. The fluid motor 45 includes a cylinder I 98 containing a piston I99 which is rigidly secured to the piston rod 41.
Working fluid is supplied to the cylinder I98 through a pipe II9 which connects with a valve casing I I2.
The valve casing I I2 contains a normally closed intake valve H4 and a normally open exhaust valve II6 which are connected together by a spacer rod I I9 so that they operate as a unit. A spring I29 holds the valves H4 and H6 in normal position and a rocker arm I22 operates against a stem of the exhaust valve, II6 to close the exhaust valve I I6 and open the intake valve H4.
The rocker arm I22 is operated by a plunger I24 which extends through one end of a diaphragm chamber I26 and is operated by a diaphragm I28 when working fluid is supplied to the diaphragm chamber I 26 behind the diaphragm I28.
The diaphragm chamber I26 is connected by a pipe I39 and a pipe I 32 with a valve casing I34.
The valve casing I34 contains a normally closed intake valve I36 and a normally open exhaust valve I38 which are identical in construction with the valves I I4 and H6 in the valve casing II2. These valves I36 and I38 are operated by a rocker arm I 49. The rocker arm I49 is operated by a manual control lever I42, and when the intake valve I36 is opened and working fluid enters the valve casing I34 it will flow through a duct I44 to a diaphragm chamber I46 and actuate a diaphragm I41 which moves a plunger I48 upwardly against one end of the rocker arm I49 to hold the rocker arm I49 in operated position.
The manual control lever I42 is provided with a handle portion located adjacent the push button 59 in such position that the operator may actuate this manual control lever I 42 with one finger while another finger is in position on the push button 59. The manual control lever I42 is connected by a link I59 with the lever 69 so that operation of the push button 59 and lever 69 to open the intake valve in the valve casing 53 will cause the manual control lever I42 to move into inoperative position. When the manual control lever is moved to open the intake valve I36 in the valve casing I34 the link I50 will cause the lever 60 and push button 50 to move into inoperative position.
In order to provide two-hand control of the high pressure operating means a pipe I54 is connected with the pipe I32 and with a valve casing I55 which contains an exhaust valve I56. The exhaust valve I 56 may be closed by a manual control lever I58 which operates against a rocker arm I60 which contacts with a stem of the exhaust valve I 56. Operation of the manual control lever I42 to supply working fluid to the pipe I32, and pipe I30, to operate the valves in the valve casing II2 cannot build up suflicient pressure to operate these valves in the valve casing II2 as long as working fluid can escape through the pipe I54 and past the open exhaust valve I56. In order to effectively supply working fluid to the diaphragm chamber I26 to operate the valves in the valve casing I I2 it' is necessary therefore that the operator actuate both of the manual control levers I42 and I50.
The manual control lever I56 is connected by a link I64 with the lever 88 in the same manner as previously described in connection with the link I50. This interconnection of the manual control levers I42 and I58 with the push buttons 50 and 5| respectively makes it impossible to operate the press with one control member stuck or tied in operated position so that the two-hand control safety feature is lost.
Referring to Figure 1 it will be obvious that it is desirable to provide means to prevent the operation of the motor 45 and pry-bar 42 before the press has reached substantially closed position with the lower end of the link 20 in position over the slot 40. The means to prevent operation of the motor 45 before the press is closed are shown in Figure 2. Operation of the motor 45 is controlled by the intake valve H4 in the valve casing II2. This intake valve H4 is normally closed and can be opened only by supplying working fluid under pressure through the pipes I32 and I to the diaphragm chamber I26. The supply of working fluid to the pipe I32 is controlled by the intake valve I 36. This intake valve I36 may be opened at any time but the only supply of working fluid to the valve casing I34 and intake valve I36 is through the pipe 64 and no working fluid will be supplied through this pipe until the piston H has uncovered the port 90. As previously described the port 90 is so located that it will not be uncovered by the piston 16.

Release of high or low pressure When the press is closed under heavy pressure such pressure may be released and the press held closed under light pressure. Heavy pressure is thus released by operating a release handle I66 which opens a normally closed release valve I68 and permits working fluid to escape from the pipe I32 and pipe I30. When the release valve I66 is thus opened working fluid in the diaphragm chamber I26 will exhaust through the pipe I30, pipe I32, and" around the open release valve I68. At the same time working fluid in the diaphragm chamber I46 will exhaust through the duct I44, valve casing I34, and pipe I32, faster than working fluid enters the valve casing I34 around the open intake valve I36.
This escape of working fluid from the diaphragm chambers I26 and I46 will permit the intake valves H4 and I36 respectively to return to normal closed position thus cutting off the supply of working fluid to the motor and diaphragm chamber I26 respectively. When the intake valve II 4 is thus permitted to return to normal closed position the exhaust valve I I6 will return to open position and working fluid from the fluid motor 45 will exhaust through the pipe I I0, valve casing H2, and past the open exhaust valve II6.
A release valve I10 is located in a valve casing I12 which is connected by a pipe I14 with the pipe IOI. The release valve I10 may be operated by the same release lever I66 which operates the release valve I68 but the stem of the release valve I10 is preferably made shorter than the stem of the releasevalve I68 so that additional movement of the release lever I66 is necessary in order to open the release valve I10. When the release valve I10 is open working fluid will escape from the diaphragm chambers 82 and 64 through the pipes I00, IM and I14, faster than working fluid enters the pipes I00 and IOI through-the check valve casing 91, and the reduced pressure in the diaphragm chambers 62 and 64 will permit the exhaust valve 16 to open and the intake. valve 54 to close. When the intake ,valve 54 closes the exhaust valve will open and working fluid y from the motor 35 will exhaust through the pipes 12 and I3 past the open exhaust valves 55 and 16 respectively. When the working fluid is thus free to escape from the fluid motor 35 the spring control in which the operator controls the closing of the press under light pressure by two-hand control means,'and controls the closingof the press under heavy pressure by other two-hand control means which are interconnected with the light pressure two-hand control means so that the press cannot be operated if one of the manual controls of either of the two-hand control means is stuck or tied in operated position. The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment but changes an modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor to bring the pressing' jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor to apply heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; valve means to control the flow of working fluid to the light pressure motor; valve means rendered operative upon closing of the press to control the flow of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor; two-hand control means for the valve means for the light pressure motor; and two-hand control means for the valve means for the heavy pressure motor.
2. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressingjaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; op-

In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure fluid motor; means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure fluid motor; two-hand means to operate each of the working fluid supply control means; and means between said two-hand means by which the operation of one of said two-hand means restores the other to inoperative position.
4. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which effects light pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which effects heavy pressure; a separate two-hand mechanism associated with each of said valve means for operating the same to supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means connecting the operator operated mechanisms for transmitting movement of one to the other so that movement of either of said operator operated mechanisms into operative position moves the other into inoperative position.
5. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure; and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure fluid motor; means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure fluid motor; two-hand control means -including a pair of manuals for operating each of the working fluid supply control means; and
means operated by one of the manuals when moved into operative position for restoring one of the manuals of the other control means to inoperative position.
6. In a garment or laundry pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which efiects light pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which eifects heavy pressure; two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve 'means for operating the same to supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means for transmitting movement of a manual, of one of the two-hand control means, to a manual of the other two-hand control means so that movement of either manual into operative position moves the other into inoperative position.
7. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; op erating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which efiects light pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor which effects heavy pressure; two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve means for operating the same to supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means between each of the manuals of one of the two-hand control means and the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means for transmitting movement of any one of the manuals to the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control mechanism so that movement of any manual into operative position shifts the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control mechanism into inoperative position.
8; A garment or ironing press comprising, coacting press jaws, a low power motor to close the press jaws under light pressure, a feed line including, two-hand control members-connected to the motor to energize same, means cooperating with the two-hand control members to compel an operator to keep his hands on both of the twohand controls until the press closes, a high power motor operatively connected with a press jaw to produce heavy jaw pressure after the press is closed by the low power motor, a feed line including two-hand control members connected with the high power motor, and an operating connection between one control member of each twohand control, whereby movement or one set of two-hand controls to energize one motor positively resets the other two-hand control members to inefiective position so the latter'is not in position to energize the other motor.

A press having coacting press jaws and motor means therefor, a feed line having a valve means including, a closed intake valve connected with the motor means, a two-hand control having a pair of levers movable in one direction to operate the valve means, a second feed line hav ing a second closed valve means including a closed intake valve connected with the motor means, a second two-hand control also having a pair of levers movable in one direction to operate the second valve means, and a link connection between one lever of each pair, whereby movement of one lever of one two-hand control in one direction returns the lever of the other pair to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws, operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control mechanism including a first control means for the low power motor, a second control means for the high power motor, a manual for operating the first control means to actuate the low power motor and close the press under light pressure, means to hold the first control means in operated position, a manual for operating the second control means to actuate the high power motor and close the press under heavy pressure, and interconnecting means between the manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating press jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, a valve connected with the high power motor and controlling its operation, a manual for operating the valve connected with the high power motor and closing the press under heavy pressure, and interconnecting means between the manual for the high power motor and one of the spaced manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative posit-ion.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination coperating press jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, a second closed intake valve, said second intake valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for opening said second intake valve and closing the press under heavy pressure, and interconnecting means between the second intake -valve manual and one of the spaced manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, a second closed intake valve, said second intake valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for opening said second intake with the low power motor, a manual for each' valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, means to hold the valves in operated position, a second closed intake valve, said second valve being connected with the high power motor, a
manual for opening said second intake valve and closing the press under heavy pressure, means to hold said second intake valve in operated position, and interconnecting means between the second intake valve manual and one of the spaced manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating press jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, a second open exhaust valve, said valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for closing said second exhaust valve so that the press closes under heavy pressure, means connecting the high power motor with a source of power upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism, and interconnecting means between the manual for the second exhaust valve and one of the spaced manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, a second open exhaust valve, said exhaust valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for closing said second exhaust valve so that the press closes under heavy pressure, means connecting the high power motor with a source of power upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism, and interconnecting, means between the manual for the second exhaust valve and the manual for the exhaust valve for the low power motor whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws; operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, means to hold the valves in operated position, a second open exhaust valve, said second exhaust valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for closing said second exhaust valve" so that the press closes under heavy pressure, means connecting the high power motor with a source of power upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism, and interconnecting means between the manual for the second exhaust valve and one of the spaced manuals whereby the ac uation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position. A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating press jaws: operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control means for the operating mechanism including a closed intake valve and an open exhaust valve connected with the low power motor, a manual for each valve to actuate the valves and close the press under light pressure, the manuals being spaced apart so as to require the use of two hands, means to hold the valves in operated position, a second open exhaust valve, said second exhaust valve being connected with the high power motor, a manual for closing said second exhaust valve so that the press closes under heavy pressure, means holding the second exhaust valve closed, means connecting the high power motor with a source of power upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism, and interconnecting means between the manual for the second exhaust valve and one of the spaced manuals whereby the actuation of one manual returns the other to inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor to bring the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor to apply heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; valve means to control the flow of working fluid to the light pressure motor; valve means controlling the flow of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor; means operated upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism to connect the working fluid to the valve means for the heavy pressure motor; two-hand control means for the valve means for the light pressure motor;
and two-hand control means for the valve means for the heavy pressure motor.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including a fluid motor for closing the press under light pressure, and a fluid motor for closing the press under heavy pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, and a normally open exhaust valve; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, and a normally open exhaust valve; a pair of manuals associated with each ofsaid valve means for operating the sameto supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means between each of one pair of manuals and one of the manuals of the other pair for transmitting movement of any one of the manuals to the corresponding manual of the other pair of manuals so that movement of any manual into operative position shifts the corresponding manual of the other pair of manuals into inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including a fluid motor for closing the press under light pressure, and a fluid motor for closing the press under heavy pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, a normally open exhaust valve, and means operable upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism to hold the intake valve open and the exhaust valve closed; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, and a normally open exhaust valve; two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve means for operating the same to superating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including a fluid motor for closing the press un der light pressure, and, a fluid motor for closing the press under heavy pressure; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, a normally open exhaust valve, and means operable upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism to hold the intake valve open and the exhaust valve closed; valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, a normally open exhaust valve, and means operable upon actuation of the valve means to hold the exhaust valve closed and the intake valve open; two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve means for operatingthe same to supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means between each of the manuals of one of the two-hand control means and the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means for transmitting movement of any one of the manuals to the corresponding manual of the other twohand control means so that movement of any manual into operative position shifts the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means into inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable press jaw including a fluid motor for closing the press under light pressure, and a fluid motor for closing the press under heavy pressure; a first valve means to control the supply of working fluid to thelight pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, a normally open exhaust valve, and
pressure holding. means to hold the intake valve open and the exhaust valve closed; a second valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, and anormally open exhaust valve; and two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve means for operating the same to supply workingfluid to the respective motors.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including a fluid motor for closing the press under light pressure, and a fluid motor for closing the press under heavy pressure; a first valve means to control the supply of working fluid to the light pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, a normally open exhaust valve, and pressure holding means to hold the intake valve open and the exhaust valve closed; a second valve meansto control the supply of working fluid to the heavy pressure motor including, a normally closed intake valve, and a normally open exhaust valve; means operable upon a predetermined extent of movement of the operating mechanism to connect fluid pressure to the pressure holding means and the second valve means; two-hand control means including a pair of manuals associated with each of said valve means for operating the same to supply working fluid to the respective motors; and means between each of the manuals of one of the twohand control means and the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means for transmitting movement of any one of the manuals to the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means so that movement of any manual into'operative position shifts the corresponding manual of the other two-hand control means into inoperative position.

In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; means to control the supply of working fluid to the fluid motors; one of' said control means including an intake valve and an exhaust valve operable independently of the intake valve; operator actuated means to operate the intake valve and the exhaust valve thereby forming twohand means; operator actuated means to operate the other control means; and means between said two-hand means and the operator actuated means by which the operation of said latter means restores'the operator actuated means for the exhaust valve to inoperative position.

In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws one of which is movable with respect to the other; operating mechanism for the movable pressing jaw including, a fluid motor for bringing the pressing jaws together under light pressure, and a fluid motor for applying heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; means to control the supply of working fluid to the fluid motors, each of said control means including an intake valve and an exhaust valve; operator actuated means to operate each or the working fluid valves thereby forming twohand means; and means between said operator actuated means for the exhaust valves by which the operation of one of said operator actuated means restores the otherto inoperative position.

A garment or ironing press comprising, in combination, cooperating pressing jaws, operating mechanism therefor including, a low power motor, and a high power motor; control mechanism including a first control means for the low power motor, a second control means for the high power motor, a manual for operating the first control means to actuatethe low power motor and close the press under light pressure, a manual for operating the second control means to actuate the high power motor and close the press under heavy pressure, and interconnecting means between the manuals whereby the actuation of the manual for the high power motor returns the manual for the low power motor to inoperative position.
