Description

Jan. 14, 1936. c. G. STEWART COMBINATION BOOK AND ATTACHING DEVIOE Filed Nov. 16, 1931 gmenkoz 621/47 2? y m M a Patented Jan. 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION BOOK AND ATTACHIN DEVIC 1 Claim.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination desk pad and registering device.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a combination desk pad and registering device embodying a casing housing cooperating registering disks that are manually operated in a step by step movement, the disk being provided with numerals viewable through a window in the casing and embodying means for restoring the register disks to initial position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined desk pad and register of the foregoing character especially designed for use in 5 connection with telephones so that a person may operate the register each time the telephone is used so that the register reading may be compared with statements of the telephone companies to determine the accuracy of telephone charges, the desk pad being intended for personal use of any character, such as the carrying of telephone information as numbers or the like.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:--
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the combined desk pad and register constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view with the desk pad swung to one position laterally of the register device and with the back cover of the pad broken away to show the register window in the register casing;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the register with the cover wall removed to show the register disks and operating mechanism associated therewith;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the inner face of the casing cover showing the register window therein and the guide tube for the support of a pencil; and
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the combined desk pad and register.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a combined desk pad and register, the register comprising a base plate I0 having a cover casing detachably secured thereto, while the desk pad |2 is attached to the casing cover.
The desk pad I2 is of the loose leaf type and the back portion thereof is hingedly secured as at I3 along one longitudinal side edge of the register case by attachment to the casing cover l6 that is engaged with the edges of the base 10 plate I0 to space the casing cover from the base plate and said casing cover is secured to the base plate by screws passed through openings l'l in the base plate and threaded into socket members 8 projecting from the casing cover H as shown 15 in Figure 4 to aid the marginal flanges IS in spacing the casing cover from the base plate. The lower edge flange and one side flange of the casing cover are cut away as at l9 and 20 respectively to permit exterior projection of a part of the operating mechanism of the register devices.
Theregister devices include a small register disk 2| and a larger register disk 22 rotatably supported upon the base plate l0 by screw pins 23, each of the disks 2| and 22 carrying a ratchet wheel 24 and 25 respectively that are secured to the register disks by screws 26, the ratchet wheels being disposed beneath the register disks, as shown in Figure 3. The upper face of the register disk 2| carries a circular series of numerals 21 from zero (0) to nine (9) designating units, while concentric series of numerals 28 on the upper face of the register disk 22 indicate tens and hundreds, the adjacent edges of the two register disks 2| and 22 being so disposed that the numerals thereon are viewable through the register window I4 in the casing cover H as shown in Figure 2.
The ratchet wheels 24 and 25 are of the starwheel type embodying pointed teeth 29 and said wheels are respectively engaged by levers 30 and 3| pivotally mounted upon the base plate In as at 32 and each lever 30 and 3| being tensioned as at 33 for moving the operated end thereof into engagement with its respective star wheels. The register disk 2| is adapted to be rotated in a clockwise direction together with its star wheel 24 and said star wheel carries a projecting lug 34 that is engaged with a tooth 29 of the star wheel 25 once during each complete revolution of the disk 2| for the automatic operation of the register disk 22. The means for rotating the register disk 2| includes a lever 35 pivotally mounted at one end as at 36 upon the base plate l0 with the opposite end thereof knurled as at 31 and projecting through the side slot 20 in the casing cover flange for manipulation thereof, a lateral pawl extension 38 being carried by the lever 35 and directed toward the star wheel 24, being normally spaced therefrom by the spring device 39 and limited in movement away from the star wheel by the stop lugs fill. When the lever 35 is operated against the tension of the spring 39 by engaging the knurled or serrated edge 3! thereof exteriorly of the register casing, the pawl 38 is engaged with one of the points 29 of the star wheel 2d to rotate the same a distance to bring the next succeeding number designated by the reference character 27 in alinement with the register window I l, the tensioned pawl 30 being disengaged from the teeth of the star wheel and automatically re-engaged therewith for retaining the same in rotatably adjusted position by the spring 33 associated therewith. When the register disk 2i has made one completerevolution, the lug projection 35 carried thereby is moved into engagement with one of the teeth 29 of the star wheel 25 for rotating the register disk 22.
To return the register mechanism to set or zero position as shown in Figures 2 and 3, there is provided a lever ll pivoted upon the base plate Ill as at 42 and having its operating end disposed between and so related with the star wheels 24 and 25 for engagement with the teeth 29 thereof for reversely rotating the star wheels and register disks. A pawl and ratchet device is associated with each register disk for bringing the same to rest at the ends of retrograde movement when the zero characters designated by the reference numerals 2i and 28 are alined with the register window Hi, there being provided a tensioned pawl 4:3 for each register disk pivotally mounted as at 45 upon the base plate Ill and having the opposite end thereof engaged with the peripheral edge of the associated register disk and to be engaged in the notch 46 in the register disk for preventing further retrograde movement thereof when the zero characters have been brought into alinement with the register window.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and use thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that with a device of this character it is possible to accurately check and register a number of telephone calls made during a month so that an accurate comparison may be made with the number of calls shown on the statement of the telephone companies, should it be desired to suspend the device from a bracket or other support, the hanger Illa that is slidably carried by the base plate H] may be extended as shown in Figure 2.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:-
In a device of the character described, a loose leaf binder including cover members having a hinged back connection, a hinge barrel extending longitudinally of the hinged back connection at the inner side thereof and adjacent one of the cover members and a pintle extending through the hinge barrel and having its ends projecting from the ends of the barrel and adapted for attachment to a support for the loose leaf binder.
