Description

Dec. 31, 1935. R, BYERS 2,026,458
FACING CIRCLE Filed Dec. 14, 1933 Patented Dec. 31, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FACING CIRCLE Application December 14, 1933, Serial No. 702,409
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a facing disk, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which is adapted to be placed within a facing form or plate in a manner to facilitate the use of the form in packing fruit with the liability of injury to the fruit materially reduced.
Another object of the invention is to provide a facing disk of this kind made of a rubber compound or other deformable material and wherein the marginal portion of the disk is beveled 01' feathered in a manner to assure its most effective placement within a facing form.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved facing disk whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:--
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a facing disk constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Figure 2 is a cross section taken radially through the assembly illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken radially through the device as herein disclosed;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken through the disk as herein disclosed unapplied.
My improved disk C or mat as it may also be termed is made of deformable material, such as a rubber compound or the like, and is of a diameter to be snugly received within a facing form F, said disk or mat C possessing sufficient inherent flexibility to permit the same to have close contact at substantially all points with the concave face of the bottom I of the form F.
Initially, as illustrated in Figure 4, the opposed faces a of the disk or mat C are flat and the marginal portion of the disk or mat is beveled,
as at 2, whereby is provided a feather edge 3.
The bevel 2 extends inwardly toward the under face of the disk or mat C and is of a width sufficient to assure the marginal portion of the disk or mat snugly engaging within the facing form F and particularly at the juncture of the bottom wall I of the form and the side wall 4. This fitting is further assured by the feather edge 3 which readily accommodates itself to any inequalities which may be in the side wall 4 and also assures a fitting of the disk or mat within the facing form F without the marginal portions thereof bulging or crimping in a manner to interfere with the desired effective placement of the fruit upon the form F or more particularly in direct contact with the applied disk or mat C. It is to be stated that the disk or mat C as herein disclosed is intended to be used in 5 connection with forms such as are comprised in the packing outfits as embodied in Hiatt Patent #1,573,341 and Rice Patent #1,885,480 and which means of packing fruit are now being employed on a large scale.
The disk or mat C may be freely placed within a facing form F or, if desired, the disk or mat may be positively held in applied position by a suitable adhesive.
The disk or mat C at a desiredpoint thereon adjacent to its periphery is provided with a radially disposed stop 5 extending inwardly thereof a desired distance and which stop is employed to advantage in the proper placement of the fruit within or upon the form F.
While I have hereinbefore particularly referred to a disk or mat C, it is to be stated that devices of this kind are also known in the trade as circles.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a facing disk constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise 5 arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:--
1. As a new article of manufacture, a facing mat for placement upon the bottom wall of a facing form for packing fruit, said mat being of deformable material and having its marginal portion beveled, said bevel being inwardly inclined toward the under face of the mat, and a radially disposed elongated stop carried by the marginal portion of the mat, the outer end of said stop terminating inwardly of the beveled marginal portion of the mat.
2. In combination with a facing form having a bottom and side wall, a facing mat of deformable material overlying the bottom of the facing form, said mat having its periphery constituting a feather edge for close contact with the side wall of the facing form adjacent to its juncture with the bottom wall, and a radially disposed elongated stop carried by the marginal portion of the mat, the outer end of said step terminating inwardly of the beveled marginal portion of the mat.
