This invention relates to plate glass mountings, and more particularly to fastening or clamping means for windows in store front, display window, door, sash, show case, and the like constructions.
It is common practice in the store front construction art, for example, to employ a pair of cooperating clamping members, usually of metal, for clamping in place large sheets of plate glass. The clamping members are usually drawn together into clamping engagement with the glass by means of a plurality of bolts 'or screws extending therethrough at spaced points therealong and normal to the plane of the glass sheet, although in some cases the bolts or screws have been otherwise disposed, and in some cases even concealed. So far as we are aware, however, constructions of the latter type have been relatively complicated and characterized by a relatively great number of moving parts. The primary object of our invention, therefore, is to provide an improved store front construction of the concealed screw type which is free from the objecitions present in prior art constructions of this ype,
Another object of our invention is to provide an improved store front construction of the aforesaid type which has a minimum number of moving parts.
Still another object of. our invention is to provide an improved store front construction of this type which firmly and securely clamps the glass in place, without suffering appreciable distortion or endangering the safety. of the glass.
, A further object of our invention is to provide an improved store front construction of the type specified which can be easily, speedily and accurately set up even by an unskilled worker.
Still a further object of our invention is to provide an improved store front construction of the type mentioned which is free from any unsightly or dangerous projections, abutments, openings for the collection of dirt and moisture, etc. i
It is also an object of. our invention to provide an improved store front construction which is capable of fine degrees of clamping adjustment.
Still another object of our invention is to provide an improved store front construction which, although very strong and durable, is, nevertheless, economical of manufacture and highly eflicient in use.
In accordance with our invention, we provide the front clamping member with a rearwardly extending flange and the rear clamping member with a forwardly extending flange, each of said flanges having an opening therein with the two openings in vertical alignment. The rear clamping member is also provided with a verticallymovable, screw-actuated wedge or cam element which passes through both said openings and is adapted to engage the rear edge of the opening in the front clamping member flange and the front edge of the opening in the rear clamping member flange, so that, as the cam element is advanced, it wedges or forces the two clamping members together.
The novel features which we consider characteristic of. our invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of several embodiments thereof, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of one form of our invention,
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the form of our invention shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure l but showing a slightly different modification.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, there is shown a sash comprising a front clamping member I and a back clamping member 2 supported on a sill or other suitable support 3 and in clamping engagement with a pane of glass 4. The clamping members l and 2 may be encased. in suitable sheathings (not shown) of. any desired configuration and the back clamping member 2 with its sheathing may be fixed to a riser 5 or the like on the sill 3 by means of screws 6 or similar devices.
The front'clamping member I is provided with a rearwardly extending flange I having an opening 8 therein defined, in part, by the front edge 9 and the rear edge to. In alignment with the opening 8 is a similar opening II in the forwardly extending flange I2 of the back clamping member 2, the opening ll being defined, in part, by the front edge I 3 and the rear edge l4. When the clamping members are assembled, the flange 1 extends over the flange l2 and may, if desired, rest thereon, but it will be noted (Figs. 1 and 3) that the front edge l3 of the opening II is rearward of the front edge 9 of the opening 8, while the rear edge IU of the opening 8 is forward of the rear edge M of the opening I I.
A screw l5 having a reduced portion l6 and terminating in a collar I1 is threaded in the back clamping member 2 and is movable vertically therein to carry with it a cam element in the form of a wedge or the like l8 having vertical front portions l9 and a rear face 26 inclined upwardly toward the rear away from the portions 19. The wedge I8 is also forked at 2!, as clearly shown in Figure 2, so as to be receivable by the reduced portion Ifi of the screw between the collar I! and the threaded portion thereof, whereby it is adapted to be lowered as the screw l 5 is advanced and raised as the screw is withdrawn, the wedge 58 being guided in its vertical movement by the forwardly extending guide flanges 22 on the back clamping member 2.
In assembling the last described form of our invention, the clamping members i and 2 are first inserted into their respective sheaths and the back clamping member 2 is then secured to the sill 3 in the manner described above. ihe front clamping member I is then placed against the back clamping member after the screw it and the wedge 18 have been first elevated to substantially the uppermost position, the openings 8 and II being brought into alignment with each other. Thereafter, the glass pane 4 is set either directly on the flange I, as in Figure l, or on a raised step 23 thereof, as in Figure 3, and the screw [5 is advanced to cause the portions E9 of the wedge to engage the front edge i3 of the opening H and the face 20 thereof to engage the rear edge I!) of the opening 8. Further advance of the screw l5 then forces the wedge 3 lower down to cam or draw the front clamping member I rearwardly into glass clamping relation with the rear clamping member 2. The clamping force applied by the wedge l8 may be finely adjusted by slightly turning the screw 15 one way or the other. Also, it is to be understood that the glass pane 4 is preferably engaged by the respective clamping member sheathings which extend around the upper edges of the clamping members I and 2 in well known manner.
Although we have shown and described certain specific forms of our invention, we are fully aware that many other modifications thereof and alterations therein are possible without departing from the spirit thereof. Our invention, therefore, is not to be limited except insofar as is necessitated by the prior art and by the spirit of the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, and cam means on said back clamping member for coacting with said front clamping member to draw said members toward each other into glass clamping relation, said cam means including a vertically movable element.
2. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, a rearwardly extending flange on said front clamping member, and a vertically movable cam element on said back clamping member adapted to cooperate with said flange to draw said clamping members into glass clamping relation.
3. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, a rearwardly extending flange on said front clamping member, said flange having an opening therein, and a cam element on said back clamping member adapted to extend into said opening to engage the rear edge thereof and to draw said clamping members into glass clamping relation.
4. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, a rearwardly extending flange on said front clamping member, said flange having an opening therein, and a vertically movable cam element on said back clamping member adapted to extendthrough 10 said opening to engage the rear edge thereof and to draw said clamping members into glass clamping relation.
5. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, said 15 members having overlapping portions each provided with openings, and a cam element extending through said openings and adapted to engage one edge of one of said openings and the opposite edge of the other of said openings for 20 drawing said clamping members into glass clamping relation.
6. In a mounting for a glass pane, a front clamping member, a back clamping member, said back clamping member having a forwardly 25 extending portion and said front clamping member having a rearwardly extending portion, said portions overlapping each other and having aligned openings therein with the front edge of the opening in the rear clamping member rearward of the front edge of the opening in said front clamping member and the rear edge of the opening in the front clamping member for:- ward of the rear edge of the opening in said back clamping member, and a wedge element extending through said openings and being adapted, when forced into engagement with the front edge of the opening in the rear clamping member and the rear edge of the opening in said front clamping member, to draw said clamping 40 members together into glass clamping relation.
7. The invention set forth in claim 6 characterized by the addition of a screw threaded in said back clamping member for supporting said wedge element whereby, as said screw is advanced, said wedge is forced into engagement with said edges of said respective openings.
8. The invention set forth in claim 6 characterized in that said wedge element is provided with a forked portion, and characterized further 50 by the addition of a screw threaded in said back clamping member and movable vertically therein, the lower end of said screw having a reduced portion for receiving said forked portion and supporting said wedge element whereby, as said 55 screw is advanced, said wedge is forced into engagement with said edges of said respective openings.
9. The invention set forth in claim 6 characterized by the addition of a screw threaded in 00 said back clamping member for supporting said wedge element whereby, as said screw is ad'- vanced, said wedge is forced into engagement with said edges of said respective openings, andcharacterized further in that said back clamping 65 member is provided with forwardly extending guide members for guiding the movement of said Wedge element in response to said screw.
