The invention relates to a garment carrier of the type in which a hanger for garments of different kinds is removably secured within a garment box designed particularly for utilization therewith, or a box of standard construction, and involves an improvement in the garment hanger as Well as the combination and arrangement of the hanger with respect to the box.
One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of a garment carrier which is so constructed and arranged as to preserve the shape of the garments placed therein and minimize the wrinkling of the garments irrespective. of the position in which the carrier itself may be placed. 15. A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved garment hanger so constructed that it may be easily and quickly secured in position in the garment box and removed therefrom without damage to the hanger or to the box. A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved garment hanger so constructed that it may be readily secured in position in the box after the garments have been positioned thereon, or the garments may be positioned upon the hanger after the hanger is secured within the box. A still further object of the invention is the provision of a garment hanger for supporting various articles of wearing apparel within a garment box and positioning the same therein in such a manner as to prevent any substantial movement thereof during the use of the carrier and irrespective of the position in which the carrier may be placed when in use. It is a still further object of the invention to provide a garment hanger having garment supporting means and garment positioning means thereon, both the garment supporting means and the positioningmeans being so constructed that they may be readily manipulated in securing them to the garment box and removing them therefrom, and to enable the garments to be easily placed thereon when the hanger is secured in position in the box. It is also an object of the invention to provide an improved garment hanger so constructed that it may be easily and quickly secured in position in a garment box designed especially for use therewith, or in a box of standard construction.

Fig. '7 is a fragmentary perspective View of 25 a slightly modified form of hanger; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the modified form of hanger taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. '7
Although the novel form of garment hanger disclosed herein has been designed primarily 30 for utilization with a collapsible form of garment box such as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, in which case the hanger is so designed as to be removably secured beneath an end flap of the bottom portion of the box, the con- 35 struction of the improved hanger is such that it may also be employed with a standard form of garment box by the engagement of the hanger support about the end wall of such a box as disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 4, my novel form of garment hanger is employed with an improved form of garment box of collapsible type comprising a bottom portion it! and a top portion or closure H. with a bottom wall 52 and with, oppositely arranged side walls i3 and l l,'and an extension on the bottom wall 82 forms the end wall 15 which is provided with a flap portion it which folds over into the interior of the bottom portion into engagement with the flaps ll and IS integral with the ends of the side walls I3 and M. respectively. The end wall It and the flap l6 thereon are preferably secured together by staples or wire stitching l9 extending through The bottom portion in is provided 45 the flaps H and [8 on the side walls, and similar stitching is preferably employed near the center of the end wall, midway of the upper and lower edges thereof, as shown at 2B.
The top portion H of the box is provided with a top wall 2 l, oppositely arranged side walls 22 and 23, and an end wall 24 having an interior flap portion 25 thereon secured in position by means of staples or wire stitches 26 extending therethrough and engaging with end flaps integral with the side walls 22 and 23 as heretofore described with respect to end flaps I? and it. An end wall 21 in common with the top and bottom portions of the box is preferably integral with the bottom wall l2 and the top Wall 2! and is scored along the parallel lines 28 and 29 coinciding with the meeting edges of this common end wall and the top and bottom walls 52 and 2|. The cut- away portions 36 and 3! between adjacent ends of the side walls of the top and bottom portions of the box and the lines of scoring 32 and 33 facilitate the hinging of the top portion of the box to the bottom portion in a manner well known in the art.
My improved form of hanger is removably secured in position in the garment box by means of. an elongated support 3 i folded along a longitudinal line so as to provide two overlapping sorted between the end wall l5 and the interior flap IS, with the opposite ends thereof positioned beneath the end flaps I? and i8. Preferably the ends of the support 36 are beveled as shown at 3? in order to facilitate the insertion of the support into the pocket provided by the end wall l5 and the flap i5, and the folded edge thereof is provided with a cut-away portion 38 for engagement about the fastening means 28.
As disclosed herein, a garment positioning frame 39 of such a size as to fit within the bottom portion ill of the box is attached to the elongated support 34 by means of a pair of spaced hinging members L l) and ll. The hinging members 49 and a: are preferably scored transversely thereof along two parallel lines 52 and 43, the former coinciding with the lower lateral edge of the support, and the latter being substantially midway of the lateral edges thereof.
A garment supporting member 44 designed particularly for holding a coat or similar piece of wearing apparel is provided with a central hinging member 45 located between the hinging members dd and ll for the garment positioning frame. The hinging member is likewise secured to the support 3 5 along a scored line L 6 substantially midway of the longitudinal edges of the support, and is scored along a line 41 substantially coinciding with the lower longitudinal edge of the support.
As I have disclosed the same herein, the support 34, the positioning frame 39, and the garment supporting member 44 are preferably formed from a single piece of suitable material, such as cardboard, pasteboard, fiber-board, etc. The hinging member 45 is preferably separated from the hinging members 4!! and H as shown at 43 in order to provide ample space for the upturned collar of a coat or other garment positioned on the garment supporting member 46, and the portions 59 are preferably folded over upon the body of the garment supporting member and secured thereto by staples or wire stitching in order to provide a suitable support for the shoulders of the garment. The central por-. tion 5| of the supportin member 44 may be cut along the line 52 and folded downwardly and stitched to the body of the supporting member Ml as shown at 53 to provide a support for trousers or other similar garments.
The opposite side edges of the garment positioning frame 39 are cut away as shown at 54 for receiving trousers or other articles of apparel folded about the positioning frame in well known manner, and the lower edge of the positioning frame is preferably folded over upon itself and stitched or stapled thereto as shown at 55 in order to form a reinforcement for the edge.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the hanger is secured in position in the bottom portion ID of the box by collapsing the end wall l5 of the box either partially or completely and inserting the hanger support 34 between the interior flap l6 and the end wall, with the ends of the support between the end wall proper and the inwardly turned flaps l1 and I 8 on the side walls, the cut-away portion 33 engaging about the central fastening means 20. The end wall of the bottom portion of the box is then raised into its upright position whereupon the support for the hanger is firmly and securely held in position against removal until the end wall is again moved into its collapsed position. With this improved form of hanger, the garments may be positioned thereon before the hanger is secured within the box, or they may be positioned on the hanger after it is secured within the box. By securing the hinging portions and 4| of the positioning frame to the support 34 along a scored line midway of the longitudinal edges of the support, and by scoring these hinging portions along a line parallel thereto and substantially coinciding with the lower edge of the support, a hinged connection is provided by means of which the garment positioning frame 39 may be readily folded into the dotted line position 56 shown in Fig. 3 to permit a coat or similar piece of wearing apparel to be easily placed upon the garment supporting member 44, whereupon trousers or other articles of apparel may be placed in the box transversely thereof and the positioning frame folded into position thereover and portions of the trousers or other apparel then folded over the top of the positioning frame.
The provision of the spaced lines of scoring in the hinging members 40 and M provides a hinging connection whereby the garment positioning frame 39 may be folded into a position outside the box and clear of the garment supporting member 64, in which position it will remain andnot interfere with the placing of garments on the supporting member 44 when the hanger is in the box and the latter is in a horizontal position. The spaced lines of scoring transversely of the hinging member 45 likewise provide a hinging connection permitting the garment supporting member M to be folded into a stable position outside of the box where it will not interfere with the positioning of garments upon the positioningframe 39 in case it is desired to use the hanger in a manner different from that heretofore described. The hinging connections herein disclosed alsoprovide means for attaching the frame 39 and the supporting member 44 to the support 3a in such a manner as to permit the various parts of the hanger to position themselves in the box when in either a horizontal or an upright position.
As heretofore referred to, my improved form of garment hanger is designed to be employed with a standard form of garment box in addition to the particular type of box heretofore described, and I have disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 the manner in which the hanger may be so used. In this case the opposing folded portions 35 and. 36 of the support are engaged about the free edge 51 of one of the end walls 58 of the bottom portion of the garment box, and when the garments are in position upon the hanger the hanger support 34 is retained on the end wall of the bottom portion of the box by the engagement of the top 59 of the box therewith, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
In the modified form of hanger shown in Fig. I, the opposing folded portions 35 and 36 of the support are secured together by means of staples or wire stitching 60 passed through the ends thereof. While this form of support may be utilized with a box of the type disclosed in Figs. 1 and 4, it will be understood that it is not designed to be used with a standard form of box of the type shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
I have shown my improved form of box provided with fastening means in the form of a strap 6| having one end thereof secured to the end wall of the top portion of the box and the opposite end provided with ,fastening means 62 for engagement with cooperating fastening means 63 on the bottom wall. If desired, the box may also be provided with a handle 64 preferably secured to the end wall of the top portion as illustrated in Figs. 1, 4 and 6.
While I have disclosed a preferred form of my invention, together with certain modifications thereof, it will be understood the various changes in form and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the invention as it is described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and that such changes are contemplated as come within the scope of the appended claims.
