This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which at predetermined intervals operates to issue successive coupons or strip portions having suitable indicia thereon and which device includes a mechanism for controlling the periods of such issuance.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is electrically operated and controlled and which is of simple construction so that it may-be made and assembled at a low cost and which is proof against fraud.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is clock controlled and includes means for stopping the clock when the strip is exhausted and which device further ineludes means operating in timed relation with the periods of issuance of a portion of the strip, for opening and closing the slot out through which said strip portion is issued.
Still a further object of the invention is to pro- I vide a device of this kind which includes an electric motor for feeding the strip to issue a portion thereof and an electric clock for controlling the operation of the motor so that the device is indeed quiet and at the same time is positive and accurate in its operation.
The above mentioned objects of the invention, as well as others, together with the many advantages thereof, will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.

60 Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings:

The coverplate 6, which is marginally flanged for stiffness, carries on its inner face at its bottom end, a flange 1 adapted to hook over an upstanding projection 8 on the bottom wall 4. In each wing 22, 23 is provided a horizontally disposed slot 26 which opens through its rear edge and arranged above each of said slots and also opening through the rear edge of each wing is a bayonet slot 21. The slots 26 of the wings 22, 23 receive a shaft 28, upon which is mounted a strip 29 in the form of a supply roll 29a. 7 The ends of this shaft project beyond the Wings 22, 23 and engaged with each projecting end is the mid portion of a spring or similar means 38, the ends of which are fixed to the rear end portion of the associated wing. In the bayonet slots 21 of the wings 22, 23 is engaged a tension rod 3|. The spring arrangement described acts to urge the roll 29a rearwardly of the slots 25 so as to hold the roll in peripheral engagement with the rod 3|.

If desired, said notch may be offset longitudinally to one side or the other of the plane of said line. The purpose of these notches or recesses will soon appear.
In the wings 24-25 before mentioned is journalled a shaft 34. On each end of said shaft just within an associated wing is fixed a feed roll. section 35 and 36 respectively, the shaft having a worm gear 3'! fixed thereto near the feed roll section 36. The roll section 36 has an outer end extension 38 as best shown in Fig. 5 and mounted on said shaft between a collar 39 and a friction disc 40 is a cam 4!. By means of the collar 39 and friction disc 49, the cam 4| under certain conditions can turn relatively to the shaft and under other conditions can turn with the end of the cam portion 43 engages a tension said shaft. 7
The cam 4| includes a finger engageable portion 42 and a contact actuating portion 43. During periods between actual operations of the cam,
roll shaft 44 which is engaged at its ends in bayonet slots 45, one in each wing 2425. On the tension roll shaft are tension roll sections 46, one associated with each feed roll section.
Supported from and extending between the wings 24-25, is an outer guide 41 for the strip and supported from the rear face of the plate 2| is an inner guide 48 for said strip. These guides in connection with a third guide member 49 provide a strip space or channel 50, up through which the strip 29 extends from the roll 29a, to pass about the roll sections 35 and 36 so as to be guided into and down through the space 23 previously mentioned, toward the slot 18 in the front wall for discharge or issuance out through the same.
'On the outer guide 41, to the'rear of the roll section 35 is mounted a pair of inner and outer spring contact fingers 5l-52 that are suitably insulated from said guide and from each other. The outer or free ends of said fingers are disposed in the plane of the roll extension 38. In the inner guide plate 48 in line with said extension is an opening 53 and this opening is adapted opening 53 in the inner guide plate is a second opening 54.
The inner contact finger carries a pin that normally extends through the opening 54 and to engage upon that margin of the strip 29 having the recesses 33 therein. However, when a strip recess 33 registers with the opening 54, the 1 pin 55 passes through said recess and through the opening 53 in the inner guide plate. When the pin 55 is riding on the marginal part of the strip between the recesses 33, then the two contact fingers are electrically engaged. So soon as a recess 33 lines up with the pin 55, the pin passes therethrough and through the opening 53 in the inner guide plate and said inner finger will spring away from theouter one and break engagementtherewith so as to open the circuit therethrough.
Projecting rearwardly from the supporting plate 2! and located below those portions of the 7 guides ii, 48 associated with the roll section 36 side wall 3 of the casing. The contact finger 51 3 is connected by a lead 59- with the contact finger 52 previously mentioned and the contact finger 53 is connected by a lead with one side of a suitable source of current supply.
Suitably supported from the plate 2| andarranged in a position below and in a plane between the roll sections 3536 is an electric motor 62. This motor which is quite small in size, is a self starting induction motor and includes a horizontall disposed armature shaft 63' arranged on the vertical median line of the casing and parallel with the side walls thereof. Secured to the rear side of the motor casing is a frame plate 62a in which is journalled a second horizontal shaft 64 arranged at a right angle to and below the armature shaft. Also journalled in said frame plate is a perpendicular shaft 65.
On the rear end of the armature shaft is mounted a worm 55 that meshes with a Worm gear 6? on the associated end of the shaft 64. On the other end of the shaft 54 is mounted a worm 69 meshing with and driving a worm gear 59 on the bottom end of. the perpendicular shaft 65. The top end of said perpendicular shaft carries a worm it which meshes with and drives the worm gear 3? on the feed roll shaft 34 before mentioned.
The field windings of the motor 52 are connected on one side by a lead H with the contact 51 and are connected on the other side by a lead 12 with the source of current before mentioned. The pairs of spring contact fingers 5l52 and 5"i58 before mentioned form the control for the motor 52 and start and stop the same in timed relation with respect to other parts of the mechanism as will soon appear. When the motor 92 has been started it will operate through the shaft 7, and worm gearing previously mentioned, to drive wall of the casing is an electric clock indicated as portion 98 and an adjacent recess portion 99 with a whole as at 13. This clock has a self-starting, synchronous motor I4 that operates to continuously drive a minute hand shaft 15 and an hour hand arbor 75, the latter of course, being driven two rotations each twenty four hours. 'In the dial opening I5 is arranged the dial 1'! for the clock and on said shaft 15 .and arbor T6 are fixedv the usual hands for cooperation with the dial.
On the hour hand arbor is mounted a gear 18 that drives a larger gear 79 one revolution each twenty four hours. This gear which is fixed on a shaft 89 suitably journalled. with respect to the clock motor, carries a lever actuating pin 8| on one side thereof.
Energy for running the clock motor is supplied from a suitable source of means of conductors 82 and 83 respectively. In connection with the supply of energy is means for disconnecting the clock motor therefrom as when the strip 29 runs out or becomes exhausted and such means is as follows:
Suitably arranged in the conductor 83 is a pair of normally closed, or engaged inner and outer spring contact fingers 84 and 85 respectively. These contact fingers which are suitably insulated from each other are mounted upon that part of the guide 41 associated with the feed roll section 35. The inner contact finger 84 carries a pin 89 adapted to extend through suitable openings 81 and 88 in the guides 41 and 48 respectively, just beyond the inner end of the roll section 35.
When the strip 29 is disposed in operative relation in the guide space 59 and is trained about the feed roll sections, the pin 89 will engage and ride on a part of said strip. This will cause said pin to hold the contact fingers 94 and 85 engaged so as to complete the circuit through the com ductor 83. When the strip has been exhausted and its end has passed the openings 8l88, the support for the pin 89 is withdrawn so that the pin passes through the opening 88 and causes separation of the contacts 84 and 85. This breaks the circuit for the clock at this point so that the clock will stop.
The clock described is employed to operate means for controlling the on and off periods for the motor 62 that drives the feed roll shaft 34 and such means is as follows:
Along the right hand side wall of the casing as viewed in Fig. 2 is provided a vertically reciprocable bar 89. This bar which is formed for a guided movement on the plate 2| is provided at its top end with a horizontally disposed slot 98. Near its bottom end, said bar carries a pin 9| so arranged that in the upward movement of the bar, said pin will engage the bottom contact finger 58 and cause it to electrically engage the associated contact finger 57. On the rear face of said bar 89 at a point between the slot 99 and pin Si is provided a spring finger 89a arranged in the plane of the cam 4|.
Associated with the twenty four hour gear 79, driven by the clock mechanism as before described, is a lever 92. This lever which is pivoted at a point between its ends as at 93 on the plate 2 I, includes two arms 94 and 95 respectively. A spring 96 is connected at one end to the plate 2| and is connected at its other end to the lever arm: 94 and normally tends to swing the arm in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2. The other arm 95 carries a pin 91 at its free end and which pin is engaged in the slot 90 of the vertically reciprocable bar 89. The said arm 95 is provided at a point between its ends with a cam which the pin 8| on the gear 19 coacts to provide the desired movement to the lever 92 as a whole. In the issuance of a coupon, section or length 29b of the strip 29, the same is fed out of the 5 slot [8. In the present instance, this feed or issuance occurs only once every twenty four hours and the time element consumed in the same is relatively short. It is, of course, desirable that between actual periods of issuance that said slot 10.
be maintained closed so as to prevent some person, out of curiosity or otherwise from inserting some instrument through said slot into the interior of the casing.
In this respect, I have provided a simple and 15T casing. This closing member has upturned ends 25 192, each pivoted as at I 93 to an associated wing 2229 near its front bottom corner. The bottom end of the vertically reciprocable bar 89 before mentioned is offset r'earwardly to engage upon that end I92 of the closure member adjacent 39 the wing 23 as best shown in Fig. 3. When the bar 89 is in its lowermost position, this offset bottom end so engages the end 32 of the member I00 as to hold said member in slot closing position. bar, the member I99 swings in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3, under gravity action, so that said member and lip operate to open the slot l8.
In operation, during periods between actual 4O issuances, the bar 89 stands in its lowermost position and the contact fingers 51 and 58 are spaced apart. At this time the pin 55 lines up with a recess 33 in the margin of the strip 29 so that the contact fingers 5| and 52 are disengaged, and the motor 62 is deenergized and in its stopped condition. Furthermore, at this time the pin 89, is riding on its part of the strip 29 and the contact fingers 84 and 95 are engaged so that the circuit for the clock motor M is closed and the clock is running.
In the rotation of the gear 79 as it is driven, by the motor of the clock, the pin 8| on said gear will engage the cam portion 98 of the'a'rm 95 of the lever 92 and will swing said arm 95 upwardly against the action of the spring 99. By reason of the pin and slot connection 91 and 99 between said arm 95 and the bar 89, an upward movement is imparted to the bar 89. In the initial part of the upward movement of said bar, its spring finger 89a will engage with the portion or tooth. 42 of the cam 4i and will swing said cam clockwise as viewed in Fig. 4 until the bar rises to such a height that the finger snaps past said tooth. During this initial part of the movement of said bar, this will turn the cam 4| with respect to the feed shaft and against the holding action of the friction disc 49. In this turning movement of said cam, as it slips with respect to the shaft, the cam portion 43 will engage the end of the inner spring contact finger 5i and will swing the same outwardly to not only withdraw and clear the pin 5! from the recess or notch 33 in the strip 29 but said finger 5! is caused to engage the contact finger 52. This only partially However, in the upward movement of said 35 6455 and associated gearing, drive the feed roll closes the circuit for the motor 62 which not being as yet energized remains impassive or inoperative. In this initial part of the upward movement of the bar, the offset bottom end thereof will move awayfrom the portion I02 of the closure member I98 which then swings by gravity into a position providing a free opening for the slot It].
In the final part of the upward movement of the bar 89, the pin 9! thereon engages the lower contact finger 58 and moves the same into engagement with the associated contact finger 51. This completes the closing of the circuit for the motor 52 which now becomes energized. When this motor is running, it will through the shaft shaft 34. Because of the feed roll sections 35 and 35 thereon and their coaction with the tension roll sections :15, the free end of the strip 29, that terminates at the slot 18 is fed a distance approximating the length of one of its coupons, sections or the like 2% so as to present such a section ready for tearing off and to present another section in line or register with the window opening i9.
In the initial part of the drive of the shaft 34 the cam 4| due to its frictional engagement with the shaft, will turn therewith until the front corher part of the cam portion 43 engages the shaft 44 for the tension roll sections 46, after which the shaft 34 in the final part of the drive will turn with respect to the cam until an entire section 292) of the strip 29 has been fed out of the slot l8. When the cam 4| is turning with the shaft as mentioned, this will let the spring contact finger 5| move toward the guide 4'! so that the pin engages and rides on the strip 29. This movement of the spring contact'finger, however, is not enough to cause a separation thereof from the associated contact.
Just after the time that a complete section of the strip 29 has been fed or issued out of the slot E8, the pin 81 on the gear 79 slips off the cam surface 98 of the lever 92 to' enter into the recess 99 of said lever. When this occurs, the arm 95 of the lever is left unsupported so that the spring 96 operates to swing said lever in a clockwise directionas viewed in Fig. 2. In this movement of the lever, its arm 95 swings downwardly and through the pin and slot connection 91 and 90 causes a downward movement of the bar 89.
Just before the time that the lever 92 swings in the clockwise direction as described, a notch or recess 33 in the margin of the strip 29, comes into register with the pin 55 carried by the finger 5|. This pin then enters the recess 33 and this action causes a separation between the contact fingers 5l52 so that a first and controlling break is provided in the circuit for the'motor.
In said downward movement of the bar 89 as before'mentioned, the pin 9| moves away from the finger 58 and this breaks the motor circuit at a second place.
With the issuance of a section of the strip 29 out through the slot [8, a new section is presented to view through the window opening or frame [9 and the issued section may be removed by tearing the same off along the top edge of the slot I8 as a tearing edge.
Assume now that the last section of the strip has been fed off the roll and is in a position passing over the feed roll section. As the free edge of said. last section passes beyond the pin 86, the same becomes unsupported and this permits the contact finger 84 to move away from the contact supported so that the finger 5! moves away from 10 the contact 52. This breaks the circuit for the motor 62 which also stops.
From the above, it is apparent that when the supply strip is exhausted, this not only stops the clock but it also serves to stop the motor 62.15 This should only occur once a year and the clock may be again restarted and the device again caused to function only upon the placing of a new supply strip for the following year.
The device described, is positiveand substan- 2o tially silent in operation and consists of parts that are strong and rugged so as to require no servicing operation.
While I have described the device as issuing a strip length once every 24 hours this is done only 25 in an illustrative sense because with but slight modification this time period between issuance may be easily changed.
In describing the invention, I have referred in detail to the form, arrangement and construction 30 of the various parts, this is to be considered as descriptive of only one embodiment of the invention, so that I do not wish to be limited thereto, except as may be specifically set forth in the appended claims. 35
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing having a coupon discharge opening, a series of coupons in said casing having the desired indicia thereon, means operative to issue 40 said coupons successively out through said opening at predetermined intervals, means for controlling the intervallic operation of said first mentioned means, and a member for opening and closing said opening and actuated from said con- 45 trolling means to close said opening between said intervals.
2. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing having a coupon discharge open- 7 ing, a strip arranged in said casing and having 50 desired indicia on certain portions thereof, means operable to issue said portions successively out through said opening at predetermined intervals, means for controlling the intervallic operation of said first mentioned means, and a member for opening and closing said opening and actuated from said controlling means to close said opening between said intervals.
3. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing having a discharge opening, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, means operable to issue said portions successively out through said opening at predetermined intervals, means for controlling the intervallic operation of said means, and a member for opening and closing said opening and actuated from said controlling means to close said opening between said intervals, and to open said opening just prior to said intervals.
4. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a series of coupons in said casing, electrically operated means for issuing said coupons successively at predetermined intervals, and means for starting and stoppingsaid electrically'operated means to determine said intervals, and including parts actuated by portions of certain of said coupons.
5. A device of the kind described embodying therein a-casing, a series of coupons in said casing, electrically operated means for issuing said coupons successively at predetermined intervals, a clock mechanism in said casing, and means actuated partly by said clock mechanism and partly by said coupons for starting and stopping said electrically operated means at the desired intervals.
6. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, feed roll means in said casing for successively issuing said portions at predetermined intervals, means for actuating feed roll means operating partly through the strip, and means for controlling said actuating means so that said feed roll means will issue said portions at said predetermined intervals. j
7. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, feed roll means in said casing for successively issuing said portions at predetermined intervals, electrically operable means in said casing, means operable by said electrically operable means when energized for actuating said feed roll means operating partly through the strip, and means for controlling the energization of said electrically operable means so that said feed roll means will issue said portions at said predetermined intervals.
8. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, feed roll means in said casing for successively issuing said portions at predetermined intervals, electrically operable means in said casing, means operable by said electrically operable means when energized for actuating said feed roll means, and clock mechanism in said casing operating in conjunction with parts of the strip for controlling the energization of said electrically operable means so that said feed roll means will issue said portions at said predetermined intervals.
9. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing having a discharge opening, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, means operable to issue said portions successively out through said discharge opening at predetermined intervals, a member associated with said opening to open and close the same, means for controlling the operation of said first mentioned means, and means actuated in timed relation with said controlling means and operating on said member to open and close said opening in accordance with said intervals.
10. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing having a discharge opening, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, means for issuing said portions successively out through said opening at predetermined intervals, said means including an electrically operable device as the prime mover, a member associated with said opening for opening and closing the same, a control mechanism, and means actuated by said control mechanisms for controlling the energization of said electrically operable device and for actuating said member for opening and closing said opening in timed relation with the issuance of 5 said portions of the strip.
11. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, a feed roll comprising a shaft and roll 10 sections thereon and over which said strip passes, an electrically operable prime mover, speed reducing means between said shaft and prime mover, and means operating partly through the strip for energizing said electrically operable 15 prime mover at predetermined time intervals,
12. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions thereof, a feed roll comprising a shaft and roll 20 sections and over which said strip passes, an electrically operable prime mover, speed reducing means between said shaft and prime mover, a circuit for said prime mover, and mechanism also in said casing and operating partly through the strip 25 for controlling said circuit at predetermined time intervals.
13. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing and having desired indicia on certain portions 30 thereof, a feed roll comprising a shaft and roll sections and over which said strip passes, an electrically operable prime mover, speed reducing means between said shaft and prime mover, a circuit for said prime mover, clock mechanism 35 in said casing for controlling said circuit at predetermined intervals, and means for stopping said clock mechanism when the tail end of said strip passes over said feed roll.
14. A device of the kind described embodying 40 therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing, electrically operable means for issuing successive portions of said strip at predetermined intervals, a circuit for said means, sets of contact members arranged in said circuit for controlling the open- 45 ing and closing of the same, means operating in timed relation with said intervals for actuating said sets of contact members to close said circuit, one contact of one of said sets when in circuit closing position engaging said strip, and means 5 associated with predetermined portions of said strip and operating when it comes into line with said contact of said one of said sets of contact members to open said circuit for said electrically operable means. 55
15. A device of the kind described embodying therein a casing, a strip arranged in said casing, electrically operable means for issuing successive portions of said strip at predetermined intervals, a circuit for said means, sets of contact members 0 arranged in said circuit for controlling the opening and closing of the same, clock mechanism for determining said intervals, and means operated by said clock mechanism for actuating said sets of contact members to close said circuit, one of 5 said sets of contacts being actuated by the strip itself to open said circuit at one point and the other of said sets of contacts being actuated by said clock mechanism actuated means to open said circuit at another point.
