IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER CUTTER-BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,510, dated April 16, 1878; application filed March 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, MILLER G. BELL, of Glen Gardner, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bars and Knives of Reapers and Mowers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the-same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to-the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of a vertical cross-section of the cutter-bar and knife-section. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same.
This invention has relation to the cutters of reaping and mowing machines; and it consists in the construction and novelarrange ment of the rounded curved bends of the knife-sections from the blade to its flange, and of the lower section or body of the bar having a riselip or upward flange, forming a rest under the rear of the blade, and in front of the bend connecting the blade with its flange, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the lower or main portion of the cutter-bar, upon which the knife-sections are supported. B represents its rise-lip or restflange, which extends upward from its front portion along its entire length, and is formed with curved bends a and b, to engage with the 0 represents the knife-sections, consisting each of a blade portion, D, and a horizontal flange, E, connected by a bend portion, F, with curved bends, as indicated at a and b. The breadth of the flange E is less than that of the cutter-bar, so that it only extends partly across the same when laid in position with the bend F against the rest-flange of the cutter-bar, and the rear portion of the blade supported upon said restfiange. The hole in the knife-section is intended for the application of a punch for driving, in case of rusting.
G designates the upper section or cap-piece of the cutter -bar, which is fitted upon the lower section upon the flange E of the knifesection, and up against the rear face of its bend F, in which position .it is firmly secured by screws or other suitable fastenings.
In this construction the knives are designed to have great strength, being supported under the heel of the blade and in front of the bend. Furthermore, the form of the knife with curved bends renders it easy to manufacture.
I am aware that it is not new to "clamp the angular rear flanges of knife-sections between the upper and under portions of a cutter-bar; hence I do not claim, broadly, such invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cutter-bar for reapers and mowers, the bar-section A, having the front rise or restflange B and the cap-section G, combined with the knife-sections 0, having the rear flange E, the rounded upward bend F, and the blade D, said bend and blade being supported, respectively, in front and underneath by said restflange, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MILLER G. BELL.-
