8 Claims.
This invention relates to gripping devices and more particularly to stud removers, although certain features thereof may be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
It contemplates more especially the provision of an improved gripper device having means for frictionally engaging members that are ordinarily incapable of turning with the usual tool such as a wrench or similar expedients resorted to for seating or unseating studs, rods or other cylindrical members.
One object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and improve the operation of devices of the character mentioned.
Another object is to provide a slidable gripper that is capable of engaging cylindrical members of varying diameter to effect the turning thereof for seating and unseating purposes.
Still another object is to provide a turning member having a frame with a slidable engaging member which tends to increase the gripping action responsive to the desired seating or unseating of a stud or other similar members.
A further object is to provide a device having a turning member with a slidable engaging jaw that is capable of seating or unseating a stud or similar member responsive to the directional rotation thereof.
A still further object is to provide a sliding jaw that is capable of frictional engagement with a stud or similar member with increasing whipping action responsive to the desired directional rotation thereof.
Still a further object is to provide a stud engaging member that has a sliding jaw with gear engaging means for effecting the operative connection thereof to a turning device.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an illustrated embodiment of the present invention.

The structure selected for illustration comprises a body IB preferably though not essentially of cylindrical configuration to present ilat circular surfaces II and I2 intermediate a peripheral circumferential surface I3. desired size and is preferably though not essentially of alloy steel so as to increase the load turning capacity thereof. A circular bore I4 is provided through the body member I3, it being laterally off-set from the body axis thereof to 5 receive a correspondingly shaped and sized shank l5 which terminates in an enlarged head I6 provided with a polygonal opening I'I for the purpose of telescopically receiving a detachable turning handle. The turning handle is of standl0 ard or any approved construction that has a polygonal extremity serving as a complement of the polygonal bore I'I which affords attachment for turning the shank i5 in a manner and for a purpose that will appear more fully hereinafter. l5
It is to be noted that the bore I3 communicates with an opening I8 which is smaller in diameter and on that account presents a circular shoulder I9. The shank I5 is correspondingly shaped so as to constitute a complement 20 of the bore I4 with its communicating aperture I8 so that the shoulder 20 thereof will abut against the shoulder I9 so as to x the shank I5 in the desired assembled relation. In this position, the shoulder 2I presented by the junc- 25 ture ofthe shank I5 with its enlarged head I6, is disposed adjacent the surface II of the shoulder I0 so as to craate two bearing shoulders 2D and 2l'.
The shank I5 with its connecting head I6 30 formed integral therewith, is retained in proper assembled relation to the body I0 by means of a spring impressed detent 22 confined in an aperture 23 provided in the shank I5. 'Ihe aperture 23 retains the detent 22, in this instance of 35 spherical configuration by means of swaging the mouth region thereof as at 24 to retain the ball 22 against expulsion from the aperture 23. A spring 25 is confined in the aperture 23 to normally urge the spherical detent 22 outwardly to 40 the peripheral surface of the shank I5. The body III adjacent the spherical detent 22 is provided With an annular groove 25 to serve as a complement for the spherical detent 22 so as to retain the shank I5 in proper assembled relation with the body Ill.
In order to manipulate studs or other cylindrical members, the body Ill is provided with a cylindrical bore 2l which extends completely therethrough in diametrical alignment with the 50 bore I4. A slidable stud engaging jaw member 28, in this instance of circular cross section, is slidably confined in the correspondingly sized bore 29 which is disposed transversely of the bore 2l within the body Ill intermediate the 55 flat circular surfaces II and I2 thereof. It is to be noted that the transverse bore 29 communicates in part with the stud receiving bore 21 so that the slidable jaw member 28 will travel in the path thereof. Movement of the jaw member 28 is effected responsive to the turning of the shank head I6 with a turning handle that is in engagement with the polygonal opening I1 provided therein. This is accomplished by providing a shank I5 with gear teeth 30 in meshing engagement with the linearly disposed teeth 3l defining a rack along the slidable stud engaging jaw member 28. Consequently, the turning of the shank I5 will effect the linear movement in the jaw 28 of the bore 29.
In order that a stud or other cylindrical member 32 may be engaged within the bore 21, the jaw member 28 is provided which a recess 33 intermediate the ends thereof and in the edge opposite to the rack 3I. The recess 33 is provided with serrated edges 34 and 35 which are of diverging configuration so as to substantially correspond with the opening bore 21 in registry therewith to freely receive a stud 32 therethrough. Turning of the shank head I6 in one direction or the other will cause the serrated jaw surfaces 34 and 35 to engage the smooth peripheral surface of the stud 32 or other cylindrical member so as to urge such against the surface of the bore 21 to tightly embrace and grasp the stud for turning with the body I0.
Turning of the body I is accomplished by continuing the rotation of the shank head I6 imparted thereto to engage the stud 32 which is lodged in the bore 21 so that increased turning movement to seat or unseat the stud 32 will impart an increased grip thereon to preclude any possible slip or disengagement. Various sizes of studs may be engaged by the jaw edges 34-35 Within the limit defined by the bore 21, thereby furnishing a stud seating or unseating tool that is applicable to studs of varying diameter within the capacity of the body III.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein specifically described without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member having an opening entirely therethrough for loosely receiving studs of various diameters, of a jaw member movably associated with said body member and relative to said body opening for gripping engagement of a stud against the Wall of said body opening, rotatable means journalled in said body member, and a meshing gear tooth connection between said jaw member and said rotatable means to displace said jaw member to gripping engagement and turn said body member responsive to imparting rotation to said rotatable means.
2. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member having an opening entirely therethrough for loosely receiving studs of various diameters, of a jaw member slidably associated with said body member and relative to said body opening for gripping engagement of a stud against the wall of said body opening, rotatable means journalled in said body member, and a meshing gear tooth connection between said jaw member and said rotatable means to displace said jaw member to gripping engagement and turn said body member responsive to imparting rotation to Said rotatable means.
3. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member` having a stud receiving bore, of a jaw member slidably associated with said body member for 10 movement relative to said bore, there being a notch in said jaw member to engage a Stud extending in said body bore, rotatable means journalled in ksaid body member, and a meshing gear tooth connection between said jaw member and said rotatable means to displace said jaw member and turn said body member responsive to imparting rotation to said rotatable means.
4. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member having an opening entirely therethrough for loosely receiving studs of various diameters, of an elongated cylindrical jaw member slidably associated with said body member and relative to said body opening for gripping engagement of a stud against the Wall of lsaid body opening, and rotatable means journalled in said body member to displace said jaw member for gripping engagement of a stud against the wall of said body opening and turn said body member therewith.
5. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member having a stud receiving bore, of an elongated rod-like jaw member movably associated with said body member, there being a notch in said jaw member intermediate the extremities thereof to engage a stud extending in said body bore, and rotatable means journalled in said body member to displace said jaw member and turn said body member.
6. In a stud removing device of the character described, the combination with a body member having a stud receiving bore, of a jaw member slidably associated with said-body member relative to said bore, there being a notch in said jaw member intermediate the ends thereof to engage a stud extending in said body bore, and rotatable means journalled in said member to displace said jaw member and turn said body member.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member having a stud receiving bore, of a rod-like jaw member slidably associated with said body member for movement past said bore, there being a notch having dverging sides in said jaw member intermediate the ends thereof to engage a stud extending in said body bore, and rotatable means journalled in said member to displace said jaw member and turn said body member.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member having a stud receiving bore, of a jaw member slidably associated with said body member for movement past said bore, there being a notch having diverging serrated sides in said jaw member intermediate the ends thereof to engage a stud extending in said body bore, and rotatable means journalled in said member to displace said jaw member and turn said body member.
