LABEL IMPRINTING DEVICE Filed May 22, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 mm mm INVENTOR. Jacob SZ'lI/erman BY y ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LABEL IMPBINTING DEVICE Jacob Silverman, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 22, 1934, Serial No. 726,925 4 Claims. (01. 101-287) The present invention relates to devices for printing such information as the lot number and size, etc. on previously made labels and hangers to be attached to garments, such as shirts, coats or the like.
Labels or hangers for this purpose are usually made of fabric and are supplied either in rolls from which they may be cut as needed or are gotten up as individual units, with doubled over edges and ends to provide neat oblong labels or hangers which may be sewn onto garments.
This invention has for its object, the provision of a device inwhich labels in either of the above conditions may be stamped or printed with indicia such as the lot number and size of the garment to whch it is to be attached. 7
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a simple, inexpensive device for the above purpose in which the labels may be economically and speedily stamped.
A further object of the invention is the. provision of a label feeding unit which may be de tachably engaged with a stamping or printing machine, which may be adjusted to receive and hold a stack of labels or hangers of various widths and lengths and which is provided with simple means to feed the labels singly and successively from the bottom of the stack.
These advantageous features are accomplished by the novel and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, constituting an essential part of the disclosure, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail of the means for operating the stamping unit and for feeding the labels after stamping.
Fig. 4 is an underside perspective of an individual label showing the ejectors therefor.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the stamping device.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the center thereof.
Fig. 7 is a similar view in the stamping or printing position.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the stamping device.
Fg. 9 is a side view of the label hopper.
Fig. 10 is a perspective detail of the label stack follower.
The device is supported on a base I 5 on which may be suitably attached an electric motor 5 provided with a speed reduction unit [1, from the driven shaft [8 of which and through a medium such as the belt l9, may be driven the shaft 20 which; is supported on upright brackets 21.
An eccentric cam member 22 on the shaft is adapted to engage against an angularly disposed 6 end 23 of the walking beam 24 and to soften the action at that point, resilient means such as the spring 25 may be provided on the end 23 for contact with the eccentric. member.
The walking beam is fulcrumed at 26 to a 10 1 rack linkv 2.1 which in turn is mounted to pivot at 28 on the standard 29. The other end of the beam is forked as at 30 and pivotally connected to the vertical plunger 31 of the stamping device.
The plunger 3| is guided to move vertically in 15 the inverted U-shaped frame 32 and to its lower end is fixed a plate 33 having extending pins 34 movable in the guide slots 35 in the frame 32. To the underside of this plate may be attached a type carrying member 36 by means such as 0 the studs and nuts 31, the type carried thereby being shown at 38.
Means may be provided to ink the type and one manner in which it may be accomplished is to provide an inking pad 39 supported in the 25 swinging member 40 pivoted to; the frame 32 at 4| and connected by links 42 to the pins 34 of the plate 33. In this manner the type 38 is inked when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6 and when the stamping is done (Fig. 7) 30 43 comprising one member 44 fixedly supported as at 45 and two cooperating members 45 adjustably supported at 4-1 for varying widths and lengths of labels. The lower end of the hopper member 44 is provided with flared portions 48 for reasons later apparent. The labels are normally stacked in the hopper and the lowermost one, at the proper time is ejected therefrom by means of the ejector fingers 49 carried by the slide 50 which is guided at 5|. This slide is connected as at 52 to the 5. adjustable end 53 of a member 54 guided to slide at 55 and provided with a return spring 56. The end opposite to the connection 52 is preferably bent upwardly as at 51 to provide a co- -acting portion for the roller 58 at the end of 50 be formed with a tongue 6| guided between the members 46 of the hopper. 55
A spring or springs 62 below the stack has its end coacting with the ends of the flares 48 to retain a label in its ejected position so it may be properly stamped.
The hopper and slide assembly is preferably carried by a plate 63 which may be removed from assembly with the stamping device merely by pulling the pins 64 from their seats 65 in the frame 32. This may readily be accomplished by flexing the arms 66 fixed to the plate 63.
The above removal is desirable when the labels to be stamped or printed are on a roll. In that event, the roll to be printed is supported on an arbor such as 61 and the connected labels passed over a platen 68, beneath the stamping device, over another platen 69 and taken up on another arbor (not shown) similar to the arbor 61. The strip of labels may be guided manually to proper position under the stamping device by the edge guides 10 and a pointer H may be employed to assure proper registry of the labels thereunder.
To facilitate the ejection of the unit labels from the hopper, each label is folded along its longer edges as shown at 12 and then folded along both shorter edges 13. One of the longer folds thereby provides a pocket into which the ends of the ejectors 49 may engage to push the label from beneath the stack to the printer where it will be engaged between the flares 48 and spring 62. It will be held there while the ejectors return for the next label which will push the first one ahead as it in turn is ejected from the stack. I
In operation a stack of labels is placed in the hopper with their faces upward and the weighted follower is placed thereon to press the labels onto the ejectors 49. The motor is started to rotate the shaft 26. Starting with the position of the cam 22 and roller 58in Fig. 3, rotation of the shaft 20 will first permit printing of a label and simultaneously permit the return of the ejectors 49 and then as the eccentric cam 22 again acts to raise the printer the ejectors act to move a label from the hopper to a position beneath the printer. This cycle of operation is continued with each printed label pushing the one previously printed ahead and out of the way.
Although I have described my improvements with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications in the form, arrangements, proportions, and sizes thereof, may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A label printing device comprising printing mechanism, a label stack hopper, means to move a label from the hopper to a printing position, means to hold the label in said position, said latter means comprising a portion of the hopper and cooperating spring means, and means to operate said printing mechanism to print said label, said last means including a walking beam, one end of which is associated with the printer, the other end of said walking beam being angularly disposed for coaction with a rotating cam,- and cushioning means between the cam and said angularly disposed end.
2. In a label printing device having printing mechanism and a label stack hopper, means to move a label from the hopper to a printing position comprising a motivated arm and slide means operated by said arm to engage and move the label, and means to operate said printing mechanism, comprising a walking beam, a fork at one end of the beam for operative engagement with the printer, a bent portion at the other end of the beam, a rotating cam for coaction with the bent portion of the beam, and cushioning means between the cam and said bent portion.
3. In a label printing device having printing mechanism and a label stack hopper, means to move a label from the hopper to a printing position, and means to hold the label in said position until displaced, said latter means comprising a flared portion on the hopper having contact with the upperface of the label and coopcrating spring means having contact with the under-face of the label.
4. In a label printing device having printing mechanism and a label stack hopper and employing labels each having at least one folded edge, means to move a label from the hopper to a printing position including slide means, and label ejector means carried thereby and engageable in the mentioned fold, and means to hold the ejected labelin said position until displaced, said latter means comprising a flared portion on the hopper having contact with the under-face of the label, and means to operate said printing mechanism, comprising a walking beam, a fork at one end of the beam for operative engagement with the printer, a bent portion at the other end of the beam, a rotating cam for coaction with the bent portion of the beam, and cushioning means between the cam and said bent portion.
JACOB SILVERMAN.
