Description
Dec. 17, 1935. A. s. KNAPI5 2,024,371
ADJUSTABLE THUMB' REST FOR SADIRONS Filed June 18, 1935 Patented been, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Andrew S; Knapp,
Belleville, IlL, assignor to Knapp-Monarch Company, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application June 18, i935, Serial No. 27,191 9 Claims. (01. 68-26) An object of my invention is to provide in combination with the handle of a sadiron a thumb rest of simple, durable and inexpensive construction which is readily adjustable to either the left or right side of the handle to accommodate either right or left handed users of the iron and which is adjustable to different distances spaced from the handle to suit the convenience of the user and to better fit the handle to the size of the users hand. i
A further object is to provide in combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, an adjustable thumb rest comprising a bracket frictionally pivoted to the handle yoke and having a thumb rest button thereon.
A further object is to form the button with an oval concave surface to conveniently fit the thumb and to pivot it relative that it can be swung to the positionto suit the user.
most comfortable A further object is to provide means for positively retaining the thumb rest-button in the desired pivotal position relative to the bracket.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a sadiron to which my invention is applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the front of the handle yoke and handle with my invention applied thereto, the parts being shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a plan view partly in section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a still further enlarged sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 showing the frictional pivot mounting for the thumb rest.
On the accompanying drawing I have used the reference numeral ID to indicate generally a sadiron. The handle yoke thereof is indicated at I 2 and the handle at 14. My invention is applicable to either a non-ventilated handle yoke or one which is ventilated as by a slot It. In a" non-ventilated handle yoke, the thumb rest in secured in position relative to the handle yoke by providing an opening within the handle yoke through which apivot pin or stud A may be secured.
The thumb rest itself comprises a bracket l8 and a thumb rest button 20. The bracket I8 is pivotally mounted relative to the handle yoke to the bracket so 1 and the button 20 adjusted position to which it ha dered portion 24 tightly engaging the upper surface of the bracket.
The enlarged portion 24 is a pair of enlarged arc shaped portions 32 which I have provided in opposite sides of the slot I 6. Thus pivotal movement is provided without any possibility of longitudinal movement of the stud A relative to the slot l6.
A washer 34 is provided which is mounted between the head 22 and the handle yoke I2. This maybe a cupped washer of spring steel or the like having its periphery notched as indicated at 36 in the usual manner for friction washers; j I
The thumb rest button 20 has its upper surface, as indicated'at 20a, concave and the button Practical operation In the operation of my thumb rest, the bracket It may be swung to position as shown in Figure to the position shown for the convenience of a right handed user of the iron Hi. If the button is too close to the handle H or too far from it, it may be adjusted away from or toward the handle by merely swinging the bracket on its pivotal mounting A, the spring washer 34 retaining it in the desired *been adjusted.
. It can be adjusted to the dotted position of 40 Figure 3 for a left handed user.
, It is usually desirable to adjust thebutton 20 so that its major axis is substantially parallel to the handle l4 although it can be aligned with the bracket ID or retained in any other position 46 such as shown dotted at 20b in Figure ,3.
It is a comparatively simple matter to adjust the button toward or away from the handle," without the use of any tools, this. being an adjustment which would ordinarily bev used much 50 more than adjustment of the button 20 relative to the bracket l8. y invention provides an improvement over irons having thumb rests which are stationary relative to the handle yokes and which therefore cannot be used by left,
pivoted relative to lo handed users when desired and which cannot be adjusted to fit hands which are larger or smaller than the average.
Some changes may be made in the construe-- tion and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
- 1. In combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest pivoted to said handle yoke and swingable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke and means to retain the thumb rest in either of its positions.
2. In combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest pivoted to said handle yoke and swingable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke, said thumb rest being frictionally held in either of said positions.
3. In combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest pivoted to said handle yoke and swingable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke, said thumb rest including a pivotally mounted oval button having a concave upper surface and means for retaining the thumb rest in either of its positions.
4. In combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest mounted on said handle yoke and movable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke and means to hold said thumb rest in either of its positions.
5. In combination with a sadiron having a handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest mounted on said handle yoke and movable to either the right or leftside of said handle yoke, and means to hold said thumb. rest in either of said positions, said thumb rest including a bracket and a button having an oval concave portion, said button being pivotally mounted relative to said bracket for permitting its position with respect being carried by said to said bracket to be adjusted when the thumb restis either to the right or left of said handle yoke and means for retaining said button in its adiusted positions.
6. In combination with a sadiron havinga 5 handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest pivoted to said handle yoke and swingable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke, means'to retain said thumb rest in its adjusted positions, said thumb rest including'a bracket and an oval 1 button on its outer free end, said button being pivotally mounted relative to said bracket for permitting the button to assume adjusted positions when the thumb rest is adjusted.
'7. I combination with a sadiron havin a 15 handle yoke ventilated by a slot therein and a handle, a thumb rest pivoted to said handle yoke and swingable to either the right or left side of said handle yoke, a portion of said slot in said handle yoke being enlarged, a pivot pin through 20 said, enlarged portion, saidthumb rest being mounted thereon and friction washer means to normally retain said thumb rest against swing-' ing movement relative to said handle yoke.
8. In combination with a sadiron having a g; handle yoke and a handle, a thumb rest comprising a bracket, an oval shaped thumb rest button pivotally mounted on one end thereof for permitting adjustment thereof with respect to said bracket and the other end of said bracket handle yoke. 9. In combination with a sadiron having a. handle yoke and ahandle, a thumb rest comprising a bracket, a thumb rest button of greater length than width pivotally mounted on one end thereof for permitting adjustment thereof with respect to said bracket, the other end .of said bracket being pivotally carried by said handle yoke for permitting swinging of the thumb rest to either the right or means to retain said right or left position.
