2 Claims. (of. 220-39) This invention relates to a container, more particularly to the closing means therefor. My improved closing means is adaptable for use in connection with bung rings, including pressed-in 5 types of rings, and lends itself for use where cap seals are employed, since the upper surfaces of the closing means lie substantially flush with the exposed end of the ring or container wall associated therewith. 7 10' One object of the invention is to construct a flush type of closing plug having its body recessed or cut away in a manner that provides integral related members, the sides and ends of which serve as abutments and walls utilizable for tuming the plug and the upper surfaces of which form a base or backing for a cap. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved plug, for closing an opening, formed with a recessed body portion, the side walls of the recess being so shaped that a plurality of related portions are provided, whereby a standard type of tool or various other devices may be used. to seat or unseat the plug.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved flush type of closing plug having a recessed body portion shaped" to provide, with a minimum amount of metal, related walls serving as a backing for seal caps and abutments for tools and other devices;
Another object of the invention is to construct an improved closure means comprising (a) a plug having tool engaging elements and a vent and constructed to fit substantially flush with its re-- ceiving member and (b) a closing device for said vent having tool engaging elements and constructed to fit substantially flush with the bottom of said plug.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention 4 relates from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,

In the drawing, I indicates a container having a side wall 2 and heads or end walls, only one of which is shown'at 3, connected to the side wall 2 5 by a doubleseam 4. In the illustrated form of construction the wall 3 is formed with an opening in which is mounted'in any well known,
' manner, a hung ring 5. The construction of the ring 5 is preferably similar to the ring disclosed 10 in Letters Patent No. 1,929,412, dated October 10, 1933, and granted to me; for which reason no claim is made'thereto herein. ,In practice it is customary to provide the container with two. or more openings, for filling; venting, emptying andlor dispensing. As the closures for these openin s maybe and preferably are similar, only one opening is shown. As shown the ring 5 is internally threaded at 5a to receive a. closure indicated as an entirety at 5. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the 20 closure comprises a base 6' and an annular upstanding side wall 1 threaded externally to engage the threads 5a. Within the side walll and preferably formed integrally therewith and the base 6 I provide a plurality of inwardly project- 25 ing, uniformly spaced members 8, having flat inner end walls or faces 8'. The upper surfaces of the members 8 are preferably disposed in the plane of the upper end of the side wall I and the side walls 8a of each member are preferably parallel to a radius of the member, for a purpose later. set forth. As shown, the inner end faces 8' of the members 8 are disposed in a predetermined relation. For example, where two members 8 are provided, their end faces are in opposed or diametrical 35 relation for engagement by a tool A, as shown in Fig. 6; when four members 8 are provided, each face 8' is in opposed or diametrical' relation to one of the remaining faces 8', as shown in Fig. 1,
In the construction and arrangement above set forth, the members 8 form between them and the wall I diametrically arranged recesses 9 which. merge with the space or area within the members 8, so that various devices, other than the usual wrench A may be inserted in two of the recesses 9 and intermediate space and engaged with twooppositely related corners 8:2: of the members 8 to screw in or out the closure 6 The width of each;
end wall 8' is somewhat less than the width of each-face of the wrench, so that, while the wrench :faces will be effective to screw inor out the closurei, the. adjacent corners la: of adjoining members aybe spaced from each othera considerable distance.
It will thus be seen that a minimum amoun of metal is required to form-the closure.
By making the uppersurfaces of the members 8 flush withpr in the plane of the upper end of the 'itssidewa1lsextendparallc1ly.itwillbeseen wall I, such surfaces form a support or backing for the body portion of a sealing cap 20. As each member I is equal in width to its end face 8? and that a relatively large area occupied by the closure 6 is utilizedas a backing or support for the body portion of the sealing cap ll.
The plug 6 may be used in anytype of ring and with the ring mounted uprightly (see Fig. 5) or inverted, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 8 and 6.
The closure 6 is, is provided with an annular "recess ll adjacent its upper end to receive a gasket Ila. By preference; the uppermost thread to in the ring opening is cut away and the upper end of the closure is provided with a shoulder.
I! (being an extension of the upper wall of the recess H), which is arranged to engage the gasket Ila and compress it, when the closure is tightened.
' .Where the plug is provided with a vent, I provide the bottom wall 6' with a depending integral neck l3, which is internally threaded at' H for a closure IS. The closure I I is similar in construction to the closure 6, that is, it is provided with' a bottom wall, an externally threaded side wall adapted to be screwed into and out of the 'neck i3, and abutment members (similar tothe members 8) integral with the bottom wall and side wall and extending inwardly from .the latter for co-operative relation; also, that a gasket preferably formed of rubber, is provided to seal the opening through the neck I8.- i In this arrangement, (a) the abutment members lie flush with the top surface of the wall 0' between the members 8 and (b) a standard tool or other devices may be used, as above set forth to tighten or whereby a wire II or the like may be threaded through it and an opening in a tabit, which is spot welded to an adjacent portion of the container wall, the ends of the wire being connected by a lead sealing slug I 9. The above described a sealing arrangement is shownin Figs. 1, 4 and 6. Where the bung ring is mounted in an inverted position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which provides an annular shoulder adjacent the upper end of the ring or the construction of ring mounting provides such a shoulder, a sealing cap 20 may be used as shown in Fig. 3. That either form may be adapted-is fully shown in Fig'. 1.
To those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, many changes in construction and widely diii'ering embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures herein are purely illustrative and are. not intended to be in any sense limiting What I claimis:
1. A hollow' plug having a relatively thin, ex-
teriorly threaded rim or flange provided with a sumcient number of radially inwardly extending lugs terminating in opposed relatively wide flat active faces to form a socket for a tool, the top faces of said lugs being substantially flush with and extending inwardly from the top of said rim and distributed about the central portion of the plug to form a substantial support for the "inner portion of a sealing cap, said lugs. being separated from each other to admit a substantially flat device arranged to operate laterally thereon as a' turning tool.
. 2. A hollow'plug having a relatively thin, ex- 85 teriorly threaded rim or flange provided with a' plurality of radially inwardly extending lugs each having side walls parallel to a radius of the plug and terminating in.a substantially flat 'relative-' 1y wide face and parallel to the face of the'op- 40' posed lug, said faces cooperating to form a socket for a tool, the top faces of said lugs being substantially flush with and extending inwardly from the top of said rim and distributed aboutthe central portion of the plug to form asubstantial support for the inner portions of a sealing cap, said lugs being uniformlyfseparated from each other to admit between them a substantially flat device arranged to operate laterally thereon as a tuming tool.
