FIG. 2 shows an isometric view of another embodiment of a false eyelash according to aspects of the present disclosure; -
FIG. 3 shows an isometric view of an embodiment of an applicator for a false eyelash according to aspects of the present disclosure; -
FIG. 4 shows the applicator ofFIG. 3 with an eyelash engaged therewith in a first position; and -
FIG. 5 shows the applicator ofFIG. 4 with the eyelash in a second position. - Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to prosthetic appliances, such as false or artificial eyelashes, applied to a user's eyelashes (keratinous fibers) to enhance the appearance of the eyelashes. These appliances, hereinafter “false eyelashes,” are typically made from animal hair or synthetic hair and combine with the user's natural lashes to provide the appearance of longer, fuller eyelashes.
- False eyelashes are typically the same length as a user's eyelid and are applied using an adhesive substance, such as glue. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 is formed from a polymer, a metal, or any suitable materials or combination of materials. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 is a polymeric material with a metal core. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 is at least partially formed from a shape-memory alloy, which is deformable when cold, but returns to its original, i.e., undeformed, shape when heated. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 the shape-memory alloy has at least two distinct phases responsive to a temperature change and/or an applied stress. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 is at least partially formed from a nickel-titanium alloy, i.e., Nitinol. In an embodiment, theplacement element 64 is formed by extrusion, casting, molding, or other process or combination of process. - Still referring to
FIG. 3 , in an embodiment, thefree end 66 of the placement element, i.e., the end opposite thehandle 62, is rounded or otherwise blunted to aid in initial placement of theapplicator 60 against a user's face when applying a false eyelash. Rounding or otherwise blunting thefree end 66 also provides increased safety by eliminating sharp edges, particularly around a user's eye. - A
locator element 68 is slidably mounted to theplacement element 64 to locate a false eyelash mounted to theplacement element 64. In an embodiment, thelocator element 68 is slidably coupled to theplacement element 64 and configured to be selectively positioned on the placement element. In an embodiment, thelocator element 68 is generally shaped like a disk and includes a central channel sized and configured to receive theplacement element 64. Because the user adjusts thelocator element 68 along theplacement element 64, the user can control the distance between thestop 66 and thelocator element 68 according to the user's preferences and then trim thefalse eyelash 20 to the desired length using theapplicator 60 as a guide. - With the
locator element 68 positioned on theplacement element 64, the user mounts afalse eyelash 20 to theapplicator 60 by inserting theplacement element 64 through thechannel 26 of thebridge 22. That is, the user slides thefalse eyelash 20 onto theplacement element 64 until the false eyelash contacts thelocator element 68. The user then trims thefalse eyelash 20 at thestop 66, thereby customizing the length of theeyelash 20 according to the user's personal features and/or preferences, as shown inFIG. 4 . - To apply the
false eyelash 20, the user applies glue or adhesive to the base of thenatural lash 100. The user holds thehandle 62 of theapplicator 60 and positions the applicator such that thefalse eyelash 20 mounted thereto is located proximate to the natural lash 100 of the user. Thelocator element 68 and the stop 66 (or end of the placement element 64) act as visual markers that assist the user in the placement of thenatural lash 100. Thefalse eyelash 20 is pressed against the base of the user's natural lash 100 so that the natural lashes engage theslots 28 formed in thebody 24 of thefalse eyelash 20, as shown, for example, inFIG. 5 . - With the
natural lashes 100 engaging theslots 28 of thefalse eyelash 20, the user moves theapplicator 60 to withdraw theplacement element 64 from thechannel 26 of the false eyelash. As theplacement element 64 is withdrawn, as shown inFIG. 5 , thefalse eyelash 20 remains engaged with thenatural lash 100. The user continues to withdraw theplacement element 64 until theplacement element 64 is completely disengaged from thefalse eyelash 20, thereby leaving the false eyelash applied to the user'snatural lash 100. In some embodiments, the application of thefalse eyelash 20 is maintained by the glue or adhesive in combination with the engagement of thenatural lashes 100 with theslots 28 in thefalse eyelash 20. In some embodiments, the engagement of thenatural lashes 100 with theslots 28 in thefalse eyelash 20 is sufficient to maintain the application of thefalse eyelash 20 without the use of glue or adhesive. - Embodiments of a disclosed false eyelash and application device thereof provide many advantages over known false eyelashes and associated applicators. The applicator with the
movable locating disc 68 enables a user to mark the width of the natural eyelash and then trim the false eyelash to the appropriate width for the given natural eyelash. In addition, the applicator enables the user to apply a pair of false eyelashes more easily and in a symmetrical manner. Further, the applicator enables the user to apply the false eyelash to the natural eyelash while positioning the false eyelash from the side of the eye. That is, the user's hand does not obstruct the view of the eye while the false eyelash is being applied. In addition, the configuration of the false eyelash provides a more secure application of the false eyelash to the natural eyelash due to the engagement of the natural lashes with the slots in the false eyelashes. In some embodiments, the engagement of the natural lashes with the slots renders the use of glue or adhesive unnecessary. - The detailed description set forth above in connection with the appended drawings, where like numerals reference like elements, are intended as a description of various embodiments of the present disclosure and are not intended to represent the only embodiments.
