- Gates 152 extend between the end posts 50 .
- This embodiment will also include the hinged pivotable kickplate 68 to extend between the lower portions of the end posts 50 .
- the kickplate 68 will be pivotable downwardly, that is with its lower edge hinged to the lower end of the stabilizer legs 52 or the end posts 50 , to allow the kickplate to lay flat on the floor 108 giving the worker easier access to install the facade.
- the extension frame 14 extends towards the working side 114 from the central section 20 .
- the extension frame 14 similarly comprises horizontal support beams 70 and vertical proximal posts 72 .
- the proximal posts 70 are also similarly constructed as the main members 123 .
- One end of the support beams 70 connect to the spaced nodes 29 of the main member 123 .
- the other end of the support beams 70 connect to nodes of the proximal posts 72 .
- Gates 152 also extend between the proximal posts 72 .
- This embodiment thus provides a modulised system where the common main member 123 can be used as the central post 22 , end post 50 or proximal post 72 .
- the gates 152 are also common between the sections.
- a plant stopper bunt 76 Extending between the proximal posts 72 at the floor level is a plant stopper bunt 76 .

- the post 22 c comprises a support screw jack 24 at a lower end thereof, and a spring-loaded header plate 25 c at an upper end thereof.
- the jack 24 raises/lowers the post 22 c .
- the header plate 25 c is mounted via a spring 210 located internally within the post 22 c , the header plate 25 c engaging the ceiling 110 in use.
- the header plate 25 c can include a pivoting tab indicator 428 (visual gauge) to show when the plate 25 c has sufficiently engaged the ceiling 110 .
- the tab indicator 428 for example pivots to a horizontal position or close thereto to indicate sufficient engagement.
- the post 22 c in cross-section is generally rectangular, typically made from aluminium extrusion.
- the post 22 c includes opposing first side faces 220 and opposing second side faces 230 .
- the first side faces 220 are wider than the second side faces 230 .
- the first side faces 220 each include two channels 222 a and the second side faces 230 each include a single channel 222 b .

FIGS. 1 to 5 show a temporaryperimeter containment assembly 10 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The function of thecontainment assembly 10 is to be disposed adjacent anedge 102 of afloor 104 of abuilding 100 during construction, to extend from thefloor surface 108 to theceiling 110 of thefloor 104, to act as a safety barrier for workers and equipment and to provide additional functional features for construction. A plurality of thecontainment assemblies 10 are arranged side by side, and on multiple floors, to cover the exposedside openings 118 between thefloors 104 of thebuilding 100 during construction. Thecontainment assemblies 10 provide a barrier between the workingside 112 and thelive edge side 114 of thebuilding 100. Eachcontainment assembly 10 extends to and contacts theceiling 110 to provide full coverage from thefloor 110 to theceiling 110. - Each
containment assembly 10 comprises amain frame 12 and anoptional extension frame 14. Themain frame 12 comprises acentral section 20 and asupport section 30. - The
central section 20 comprises vertical first andsecond posts 22 which are generally parallel and laterally spaced apart from each other. Eachpost 22 is adapted to be adjustable in height to allow thepost 22 to extend fully between thefloor surface 108 and theceiling 110 and be secured thereto. In the embodiment shown, thepost 22 comprises a centralmain member 23 with asupport screw jack 24 at a lower end thereof, and atop assembly member 25 at an upper end thereof. Themain member 23 is hollow and internally threaded at the upper and lower ends thereof. - The
support screw jack 24 has abase plate 26 at its lower end and is threadedly engaged with themain member 23 at its upper end. The threaded engagement therebetween allows for the distance between themain member 23 and thebase plate 26 to be varied as needed, which effectively allows thepost 22 to be extended or shortened as needed. - The
top assembly member 25 comprises atop post 27 and threadedrod 28 at its lower end which is threadedly engaged with the upper end of themain member 23. This similarly allows the distance between themain member 23 and thetop post 27 to be varied as needed, which is a second method of effectively extending or shortening thepost 22 as needed. - The
support screw jack 24 and thetop assembly member 25 can thus both be adjusted relative to themain member 23 which modifies the length of thepost 22. Thepost 22 can be made to extend from thebase plate 26 engaging thefloor 108, to thetop post 27 engaging theceiling 110. Thetop post 27 can be provided with an upper engaging plate if desired for engaging theceiling 110. Thetop post 27 can also be disposed to extend close to theceiling 110 but not engage same if desired. - In use, as shown in
FIGS. 4 and 5 , amesh panel 60 extends between theposts 22. Theposts 22 are provided witheyelet fixings 62 for mounting of eyelets of themesh panel 60. Cross bracing 64 can also be provided between theposts 22. - As also shown in
FIGS. 6 and 7 , thesupport section 30 extends to the live side edge 114 from thecentral section 20. Thesupport section 30 comprises horizontal support beams 40 and vertical end posts 50. Themain member 23 includes spacednodes 29 thereon to which the horizontal support beams 40 are removably connected. The other end of the support beams 40 connect to nodes 51 (seeFIG. 1 ) of the vertical end posts 50 which are to be disposed close to theedge 102. The end posts 50 include a telescopic stabilizer leg 53 (seeFIG. 1 ) at a lower end thereof to provide adjustability in the engagement of the end posts 50 with thefloor 108. Adjustment of theleg 52 can also adjust the vertical orientation of theposts 22. In another embodiment, thestabilizer legs 52 can be omitted and the vertical end posts 50 can be a single body post extending from thefloor 108. Horizontal end bars 52 extend between the end posts 50. - As shown in
FIG. 1 , extending between the end posts 50 is a fixedpanel 66, and a hingedpivotable kickplate 68 extends between thestabilizer legs 52 or the lower portion of the end posts 50. The fixedpanel 66 provides additional permanent protection for theworker 120 on thelive side edge 114. Thekickplate 68 also provides protection but is pivotable upwardly to allow access to theedge 102 as needed, such as for the installation offaçade panels 140. In a preferred embodiment, thekickplate 68 is pivotable downwardly, that is with its lower edge hinged to the lower end of thestabilizer legs 52 or the end posts 50. This will allow the kickplate to lay flat on thefloor 108 giving the worker easier access. In the embodiment shown, thekickplate 68 is pivotable upwardly, that is with its upper edge hinged to the lower end of the fixedpanel 66. This allows the kickplate to be pivoted temporarily for access as required giving the worker easier access, with thekickplate 68 automatically returning to its safety barrier position afterwards via gravity. - The
extension frame 14 extends towards the workingside 114 from thecentral section 20. Theextension frame 14 similarly comprises horizontal support beams 70 and vertical proximal posts 72. One end of the support beams 70 connect to the spacednodes 29 of themain member 22. The other end of the support beams 70 connect to nodes of the proximal posts 72. Horizontalproximal bars 74 extend between the proximal posts 72. - Extending between the
proximal posts 72 at the floor level is aplant stopper plate 76. Thestopper plate 76 can be fixed to thefloor 108 viafixings 77. As shown inFIG. 2 , theextension frame 14 and theplant stopper plate 76 are adapted to stop the movement of anyequipment 150 rolling towards theedge 102. - As also shown in
FIG. 2 , thecontainment assembly 10 provides a base for asupport crane 190 which can be used to supportfaçade panels 140. -
FIGS. 6 to 10 show a temporary perimeter containment assembly 10 b according to a second preferred embodiment of the present invention which has similar features to the first embodiment. The containment assembly 10 b is also for assembly adjacent anedge 102 of afloor 104 of abuilding 100 during construction, to extend from thefloor surface 108 to theceiling 110 of thefloor 104, to act as a safety barrier for workers and equipment. - Each containment assembly 10 b also comprises a
main frame 12 and anextension frame 14. Themain frame 12 comprises acentral section 20 and asupport section 30. - The
central section 20 comprisescentral posts 22 which are generally parallel and spaced apart from each other. Eachpost 22 is adapted to be adjustable in height to allow thepost 22 to extend fully between thefloor surface 108 and theceiling 110.Gates 152 extend between the central posts 22. Thegates 152 are rectangular panel frame structures. - In the embodiment shown, the
central posts 22 comprise amain member 123 with aconstruction prop 124 at an upper end thereof. Eachmain member 123 comprises abase plate 125 and anupper plate 127. Theupper plate 127 includesconnection tabs 129 for hinged attachment of theconstruction prop 124 thereto. Theprop 124 for example comprises alower plate 140 with atube formation 142 for pin connection to theconnection tabs 129. This allows a user to attach theconstruction prop 124 to the top of themember 123 at ground level, and where the user can extend theconstruction prop 124 from ground level as well to engage theceiling 110. This avoids a user having to work at height during assembly. The prop is extended such that thecentral post 22 engages against thefloor surface 108 andceiling 110. - One or
more mesh panels 60 extends between theposts 22, specifically between theconstruction props 124. Theprops 124 are provided with upper hook mounts 132 and lower pin mounts 134 for mounting ofeyelets 64 of themesh panel 60 thereto. The embodiment thus allows for themesh panels 60 to be mounted and stretched taut between theprops 124 while theprops 124 are pivoted down, before pivoting theprops 124 upwardly to extend to theceiling 110. - The
support section 30 extends to the live side edge 114 from thecentral section 20. Thesupport section 30 similarly comprises horizontal support beams 40 and vertical end posts 50. Themain member 123 includes spacednodes 29 thereon to which the horizontal support beams 40 are removably connected. - The end posts 50 are similarly constructed as the
main members 123. The other end of the support beams 40 connect tonodes 29 of the vertical end posts 50.Gates 152 extend between the end posts 50. - This embodiment will also include the hinged
pivotable kickplate 68 to extend between the lower portions of the end posts 50. Thekickplate 68 will be pivotable downwardly, that is with its lower edge hinged to the lower end of thestabilizer legs 52 or the end posts 50, to allow the kickplate to lay flat on thefloor 108 giving the worker easier access to install the facade. - The
extension frame 14 extends towards the workingside 114 from thecentral section 20. Theextension frame 14 similarly comprises horizontal support beams 70 and vertical proximal posts 72. The proximal posts 70 are also similarly constructed as themain members 123. One end of the support beams 70 connect to the spacednodes 29 of themain member 123. The other end of the support beams 70 connect to nodes of the proximal posts 72.Gates 152 also extend between the proximal posts 72. - This embodiment thus provides a modulised system where the common
main member 123 can be used as thecentral post 22, end post 50 orproximal post 72. Thegates 152 are also common between the sections. - Extending between the
proximal posts 72 at the floor level is aplant stopper bunt 76. The bunt 176 extends the full width of the assembly 10 b. Thestopper bunt 76 is fixed to thefloor 108 viafixings 77. The proximal posts 72 are preferably attached to thefixings 77, for example via the base plates thereof or directly to the proximal posts 72. - The preferred embodiment thus provides a temporary perimeter containment system with the following features:
-
- a. Three layers of barrier fence for personnel safety—the
extension frame 14, thecentral section 20 and thesupport section 30; - b.
Fixed stopper bunt 76 on the floor providing a physical plant equipment separation barrier; - c. floor to ceiling containment, using fully engineered flame-retardant approved screening materials up to a maximum height of 4.5 m

FIGS. 11 to 14 show another embodiment of a temporaryperimeter containment assembly 10 c. Thecentral section 20 in this embodiment comprisesvertical posts 22 c which are generally rectangular in cross-section. Eachpost 22 c is also adapted to be adjustable in effective height to allow thepost 22 c to extend fully between thefloor surface 108 and theceiling 110 and be secured therebetween. In the embodiment shown, thepost 22 c comprises asupport screw jack 24 at a lower end thereof, and a spring-loadedheader plate 25 c at an upper end thereof. Thejack 24 raises/lowers thepost 22 c. Theheader plate 25 c is mounted via aspring 210 located internally within thepost 22 c, theheader plate 25 c engaging theceiling 110 in use. Theheader plate 25 c can include a pivoting tab indicator 428 (visual gauge) to show when theplate 25 c has sufficiently engaged theceiling 110. In the example, thetab indicator 428 for example pivots to a horizontal position or close thereto to indicate sufficient engagement. - As shown in
FIG. 14 , thepost 22 c in cross-section is generally rectangular, typically made from aluminium extrusion. Thepost 22 c includes opposing first side faces 220 and opposing second side faces 230. The first side faces 220 are wider than the second side faces 230. The first side faces 220 each include twochannels 222 a and the second side faces 230 each include asingle channel 222 b. Eachchannel 222 is continuous and extends the length of thepost 22 between the lower and upper ends thereof, thechannels 222 being parallel and spaced from each other. Eachchannel 222 includestabs 224 extending towards each other at the opening thereof, forming aslot 226 therebetween. Thechannels 222 with thetabs 224 are used for fixing/locking other components of the assembly thereto as described below. Thechannels 222 provide for multiple locking points along their length. - The
assembly 10 c includes ahandrail 300 having amount bolt 302 andmount tab 304 at both ends thereof. Themount tab 304 can be inserted into achannel 222 a with themount bolt 302 extending through theslot 226 of apost 22 c. Themount tab 304 can engage thetabs 224. This retains thehandrail 300 to thepost 22 c and allows thehandrail 300 to be vertically movable along thechannel 222 of thepost 22 c. Thehandrails 300 extend between theposts 22 c. Themount tabs 304 are mounted withinternal springs 305 which allows themount tabs 304 to be movable relative to thehandrail 300. This prevents thehandrail 300 from becoming jammed to thepost 22 c if thehandrail 300 is not horizontal while adjusting the level thereof relative to thepost 22 c. - Each
post 22 c includes a series of spacedadjustment apertures 228 formed along the first side faces 220, theapertures 228 being provided in pairs. Eachhandrail 300 includes a spring-loadedU-shaped lock bolt 232 disposed near the ends thereof. Eachlock bolt 232 is spring biased 233 towards thefirst side face 220 to engage a pair of theadjustment apertures 228. In this manner, thelock bolt 232 can be retracted from engagement with a pair of theadjustment apertures 228, thehandrail 300 moved vertically upwardly or downwardly along thepost 22 c, and thelock bolt 232 released to engage a new pair of theadjustment apertures 228 to lock thehandrail 300 at its new vertical position along thepost 22 c. Thelock bolt 232 at both ends of thehandrail 300 are disengaged at the same time to perform the vertical adjustment. This can be done by two workers, or the lock bolts can be connected to each other for simultaneous actuation by a single worker. - As shown in
FIG. 11 , each post 22 c can include a plurality ofhandrails 300 mounted thereto at different vertical levels.Additional handrails 300 can be mounted to the oppositefirst side face 220, with eachpost 22 c thus havinghandrails 300 extending from each side thereof. - As shown in
FIGS. 16 to 18 , thesecond channel 222 a of the first side faces 220 can receive therein side edges of amesh panel 400. Themesh panel 400 includes spaced connection bolts and tabs at its edges similar to themount bolt 302 andmount tab 304. In this manner, the mount tabs of themesh panel 400 can be inserted into theposts 22 c (typically via the open lower end thereof), such that the side edges of themesh panel 400 are retained to therespective posts 22 c. Themesh panel 400 thus can extend fully between twoposts 22 c. Anothermesh panel 400 can thus also be installed to the otherfirst side face 220 for the next modular section of the assembly. -
FIG. 17 shows apulley assembly 420 is provided adjacent theheader plate 25 c.Ropes 425 are attached to the top of the safetynet mesh panel 400, with theropes 425 routed through thepulley assembly 420, to allow the workers to raise or lower themesh panel 400 between theposts 22 c.FIG. 18 shows acam lock 430 provided to thepost 22 c for locking therope 425 in the required position of themesh panel 400.FIG. 16 shows abasket 440 extending between theposts 22 c and provided at a lower end of themesh panel 400. Themesh panel 400 can be lowered to be received by thebasket 440 for quick storage, and can be deployed from thebasket 440 for quick deployment between theposts 22 c. Thebasket 440 in the example comprises twostiff panels 445 held in a V configuration to ahandrail 300 h. Thebasket 440 can be held at close to floor level, or can be raised from the floor level at which lower portions of themesh panel 400 are received therein. This allows worker access under themesh panel 400 whilst maintaininghandrails 300 in place as desired. Themesh panel 400 is thus integrated with the assembly, covering the full width between theposts 22 c and from lower slab (floor level) up to about 150 mm below the upper slab (ceiling). -
FIGS. 11 and 18 show brackets 460 which can be mounted to thechannels 222 b of the second faces 230 for attaching additional bracing 470. The bracing 470 can includefootings 471 which are temporarily bolted to the floor. -
FIGS. 19, 20A and 20B show the addition of asupport section 30 c via half-ring brackets 520 be mounted to thechannels 222 b of the second faces 230. The half-ring brackets 520 provide adjustability in relation to their position along the channels 22 b, as well as having a number of angularly spaced apertures 525 (along the horizontal plane) which allows for adjustment of the attachment angle ofhorizontal ledgers 530/horizontal support beams 530 (also along the horizontal plane). The other end of theledgers 530 are mounted tostandards 540 via half-ring brackets 520 with the height of thestandards 540 being adjustable via abase jack 545. This provides additional flexibility with thepost 22 c and the standard 540 being able to adapt to varying floor levels if needed. Half-ring brackets 520 can also be mounted to thechannels 222 b of the oppositesecond faces 230 for attaching asimilar support section 30 c to the other side of theposts 22 c. As above, stopper plate 76, fixedpanel 66, andpivotable kickplate 68 can be fixed to thesupport sections 30 c as required. Thehorizontal ledgers 530/horizontal support beams 530 can alternatively be connected directly to thechannel 222 b of the second faces 230 without the half-ring brackets 520, by the support beams 530 having a similar mount bracket as thehandrails 300. -
FIGS. 21A, 21B, 21C, and 21D show the steps in the use of anerection machine 600 for the erection of apost 22 c. Themachine 600 includes atiltable platform 620 which carries apost 22 c to position and can slowly move thepost 22 c to the vertical orientation, via mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic actuators. This allows thepost 22 c to be positioned over thescrew jack 24 for thepost 22 c to receive abolt 426 of thescrew jack 24. Thescrew jack 24 includes abase plate 425 having thebolt 426 pivotably attached thereto, which allows easier alignment and connection to thepost 22 c. Thebase plate 425 is typically anchored in place (temporarily) to form an anchored base of thepost 22 c. Theerection machine 600 saves on labour and provides safety to worker in assembly as it delivers thepost 22 c to location, assists with aligning with thebolt 426, tilts thepost 22 c to its upright orientation, and carries the weight of thepost 22 c until thescrew jack 24 is adjusted as needed. - The invention thus provides a lightweight modular all-encompassing containment system. The embodiment provides an alloy vertical post featuring the following attribute:
-
- a) Multiple continuous fixing channels—allows for each post to have handrails and mesh panels extending from either side thereof, and support sections extending from front and rear sides thereof.
- b) Multiple locking points
- c) Extendable
- d) Allows for multiple and adjustable handrails
- The base plate provides a single pivotable pin connection to the post.
- The head plate provides a compression post effect using Bellville springs, negating the need for an anchor fixing. The post also includes a visual gauge used to indicate suitable compression loading of the head plate.
- The adjustable handrail posts are a spring loaded locking device, and a second spring loaded within the tube for the mount tab prevents the handrail becoming jammed if not horizontal while adjusting the level to the post.
- The adjustable net containment basket allows the basket to be fixed at the base level or a higher level thereby lifting the net screen when lower access is required through the screen, while the handrail posts remain in place.
- The integrated net containment system covers the full width between the posts and from lower slab to 150 mm below the upper slab.
- The assembly system is designed to be fully assembled and operated from ground level without the use of scaffolding, trestles or ladders.
- The system is designed to incorporate such accessories such as:
-
- a) Rear diagonal supports
- b) Brackets to secure to infill panels (make up panels)
- c) A structural impact barrier on the internal area before the posts
