Abstract
A trim system for a door or drawer of an electrical appliance, such as a refrigerator or freezer. The trim system has an engagement structure formed by a retainer having a first engagement surface with a plurality of ratchet teeth. The system also includes a trim member having a first, outward facing, surface and a second, inward facing, surface. The second surface of the trim member includes a protrusion configured to engage with the first engagement surface of the retaining clip, such that the trim member is secured to the engagement structure. The protrusion has a first tooth configured to engage the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface. Optionally, the retainer can be formed as a clip, with a second engagement surface opposite the first engagement surface, having a tooth or teeth for engagement with a second tooth of the protrusion.
Description
- The present disclosure generally relates to a trim suitable for fitting to electrical (i.e., commercial and/or domestic) appliances (e.g., “home appliances”). Particularly, but not exclusively, it relates to a trim attachment mechanism for the doors or drawers of refrigeration appliances.
- It is known that commercial and domestic appliances (such as laundry washing and/or drying machines, cookers, refrigeration appliances and dishwashing machines) are often installed into alcoves or spaces defined by a surrounding structure and/or other appliances and cabinetry. These “integrated” (or “built in”) appliances can be installed in several stages, with a main frame or body being installed first followed by the doors and any external, outwardly-facing paneling. This paneling is often attached to a door of the appliance in such a way that its position and/or orientation is adjustable to ensure that the outwardly-facing paneling is correctly positioned and aligned with its surrounding cabinetry panels.
- Adjustments of this nature can typically lead to gaps between the paneling and the underlying structure onto which it is mounted. Such gaps are both cosmetically displeasing and furthermore, expose the underlying structure of the door and/or frame, allowing for the ingress of dirt, dust and detritus.
- An object of the present invention is to mitigate at least some of the issues mentioned above.
- In accordance with a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a trim system for a door of an electrical appliance, the trim system comprising: an engagement structure comprising a retainer having a first engagement surface, the first engagement surface comprising a plurality of ratchet teeth; and a trim member having a first outward facing surface and a second inward facing surface; wherein the second surface of the trim member comprises a protrusion configured to engage with the first engagement surface of the retainer, such that the trim member is secured to the engagement structure; and wherein the protrusion comprises a first tooth configured to engage the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface.
- The arrangement of the plurality of ratchet teeth on the first engagement surface and the first tooth of the protrusion enables the protrusion to be selectively advanced within the retainer, i.e. inserted and secured to the retainer to varying degrees, such that the trim member can be repositioned laterally (i.e., in a front-to-back direction) relative to the engagement structure whilst still being held securely.
- Optionally, the retainer comprises a retaining clip, the retaining clip formed by the first engagement surface and a second engagement surface opposing the first engagement surface, the second engagement surface having one or more ratchet tooth/teeth, and wherein the protrusion also has a second tooth configured to engage the one or more ratchet tooth/teeth of the second engagement surface.
- The addition of a tooth on a second engagement surface helps to prevent the protrusion from being entirely disengaged from the retaining clip, whilst still allowing the protrusion to be advanceable and repositionable along the plurality of ratchet teeth on the first engagement surface.
- Optionally, the first engagement surface comprises at least two spaced apart ratchet teeth arranged such that the protrusion may be secured within the retaining clip to at least a first and a second extent.
- Optionally, the first engagement surface is provided on a first tab.
- Optionally, the second engagement surface is provided on a second tab.
- Optionally, the tabs each have a free end and an opposite fixed end attached to a main body of the engagement structure.
- Optionally, the fixed end of the tab bearing the first engagement surface is arranged to receive the protrusion of the trim member. This arrangement allows the first engagement surface to deflect when acted on by the protrusion. When the protrusion is partially inserted or withdrawn from the retaining clip, the tab and its ratchet teeth I are able to be deflected away from the protrusion so as to enable the protrusion's first tooth to move back along the plurality of ratchet teeth, towards an opening or entrance of the clip.
- Optionally, the free end of the tab bearing the second engagement surface is arranged to receive the protrusion of the trim member. This arrangement allows the second engagement surface to deflect when acted on by the protrusion. The greater flexibility of this arrangement allows the second engagement surface to deflect when acted on by the advancing protrusion such that the protrusion may pass by the tooth/teeth of the second engagement surface and be engaged within the retaining clip.
- Optionally, the protrusion is formed of a resiliently flexible material while the clip is formed from relatively inflexible material. This enables the protrusion, rather than the engagement surface(s), to deform and/or deflect as necessary when being inserted into or withdrawn from the retaining clip.
- Optionally, faces of the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface and/or the tooth or teeth of the second engagement surface, and corresponding faces of the first and/or second tooth of the protrusion, are inclined such that removal of the protrusion from the retaining clip is impeded relative to its insertion. This reduces the chance of the trim member coming loose of its own accord, or otherwise being accidentally disengaged from the retaining clip of the engagement structure.
- Optionally, the one or more ratchet teeth of the first and/or second engagement surfaces comprise front and rear faces meeting at an edge, wherein the angles of inclination of the front and rear faces are not the same, with the rear faces being less steep than the forward faces. Accordingly the protrusion may be repositioned in a forward direction along the plurality of teeth of the first engagement surface with relative ease, whereas the withdrawal of the protrusion from the plurality of teeth is more difficult.
- Optionally, the trim member and/or engagement structure is substantially elongate, extending predominantly in a longitudinal direction.
- Optionally, the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface are displaced across a lateral width of the engagement structure, substantially perpendicularly to a longitudinal extension direction of the engagement structure.
- Optionally, the engagement structure further comprises one or more abutments configured to prevent relative movement of the trim member in the longitudinal direction of its elongation.
- Optionally, the engagement structure is provided on an exposed top or bottom surface of a door or drawer.
- Optionally, the trim member has a substantially curved cross-sectional profile.
- Optionally, the protrusion comprises a right angle, having a first portion extending in a direction substantially normal to the second surface of the trim member, and a second portion extending in a direction substantially parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
- Optionally, the first tooth of the protrusion is located on a first surface of the second portion parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
- Optionally, the second tooth of the protrusion is located on a second surface of the second portion opposite the first surface.
- Optionally, when the protrusion is located in and engaged by the retaining clip, the first and second engagement surface of the retaining clip are parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
- Optionally, the trim member is made of metal and/or the engagement structure is made via injection moulding a plastics material.
- In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an electrical appliance comprising: a cabinet having an opening closable by a door or drawer fitted thereto, and a trim system for the door or drawer, the trim system comprising: an engagement structure having a retainer having a first engagement surface, the first engagement surface having a plurality of ratchet teeth; and a trim member having a first, outward facing, surface and a second, inward facing, surface; wherein the second surface of the trim member includes a protrusion configured to engage with the first engagement surface of the retainer, such that the trim member is secured to the engagement structure; and wherein the protrusion has a first tooth configured to engage the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface.
- Other aspects of the invention will be apparent from the appended claim set.
- Features from one or more embodiments or configurations may be combined with features of one or more other embodiments or configurations. Additionally, more than one embodiment or configuration may be used together in an electrical appliance, for example a refrigeration appliance, such as a refrigerator or freezer.
- As used herein the term “(s)” following a noun means the plural and/or singular form of that noun.
- As used herein the term “and/or” means “and” or “or”, or where the context allows both.
- The term “comprising” as used in this specification means “consisting at least in part of”. When interpreting each statement in this specification that includes the term “comprising”, features other than that or those prefaced by the term may also be present. Related terms such as “comprise” and “comprises” are to be interpreted in the same manner.

FIG. 1 shows atrim system 1 configured for use on an electrical appliance, for example a domestic appliance such as a refrigeration appliance 30 (seeFIG. 6A or 6B ). The trim system comprises anelongate engagement structure 10 and anelongate trim member 20. Theengagement structure 10 has alower surface 12 configured to secure to a top face of adoor 40 of therefrigeration appliance 30. The refrigeration appliance door to which thetrim system 1 is applied is preferably a “bottom” or lower door or drawer of a multi-compartment cabinet where the top of the door/drawer is, in use, visible to the user. Theengagement structure 10 has anupper surface 14 configured to engage with and retain thetrim member 20. In an embodiment, theengagement structure 10 is formed via injection moulding a plastics material whilst thetrim member 20 is an extruded metal (for example, Aluminium) component, however each component may otherwise be formed of any suitable material depending on their application and desired properties. -
FIG. 2 shows theengagement structure 10 in isolation. For securing theengagement structure 10 to the top face of thedoor 40, thelower surface 12 of theengagement structure 10 is generally shaped to conform to the top face of thedoor 40 and includes clearances and cut away portions to accommodate the various magnets, brackets and hinge mechanisms 35 found on said top face of thedoor 40. In an embodiment, theengagement structure 10 further includes through-holes for accepting screws and/or other attachment means for fixing theengagement structure 10 to thedoor 40. These features enable theengagement structure 10 to be used with multiple door models in different configurations, with the engagement structure being able to accommodate left- and right-handed hinges installed on either end of the door, for example.Upper surface 14 is recessed below front and rear longitudinal walls of theengagement structure 10 such that a longitudinal central channel is formed on or inupper surface 14. - For engaging and retaining the
trim member 20, theupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 has a series of retainers or retaining clips 16. As shown inFIG. 1 , theupper surface 14 is recessed within theengagement structure 10 and further includes a poke-yoke structure orabutment 18 to ensure that the trim member can only be successfully mounted to the engagement structure in one, correct orientation, while also restricting longitudinal movement of thetrim member 20 relative to theengagement structure 10 once mounted and retained. Theupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 further includes aslot 19 to provide clearance as necessary for surface protrusions found on thedoor 40 or body of therefrigerator 30. -
FIGS. 3A and 3B show various views of the underside of thetrim member 20 having legs orprotrusions 22 configured to engage the retaining clips 16 of theengagement structure 10.Protrusion 22 may have a first section extending from the underside oftrim member 20 and a second section extending from the distal end of the first section and having abarbed tip 23 at its distal end. In the illustrated embodiment, oneprotrusion 22 runs along a substantial portion of the length of thetrim member 20 such that asingle protrusion 22 is retaining by multiple retaining clips 16 on the surface of theengagement structure 10. In an alternative embodiment, oneprotrusion 22 is provided for each retainingclip 16. Accordingly, whilst twoprotrusions 22 are shown extending along the central, longitudinal axis of thetrim member 20, any suitable number or arrangement ofprotrusions 22 may be employed. As shown inFIG. 3B , theprotrusions 22 extend longitudinally along the length of thetrim member 20 and are positioned such that they provide clearance for the underlying structures, including the poke-yoke structure 18 of the underlyingupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 and the hinge mechanism of thedoor 40. As best shown inFIG. 3A , theprotrusions 22 have a right-angle profile (i.e., the first section extends substantially perpendicularly to the underside of the trim member and the second section extends substantially perpendicularly from the distal end of the first section) and thebarbed tip 23 has atop tooth 24 and a bottom tooth 25 (seeFIG. 4 forteeth 24/25). Ideally, each of top 24 and bottom 25 teeth consist of intersecting front and rear faces meeting at a tip edge/line. -
FIG. 4 shows thetrim member 20 secured by theengagement member 10, with aprotrusion 22 being secured within or beneath a retainer or retainingclip 16. The retainingclip 16 is formed by a first, “U”-shapedmember 16A having the distal end of each leg attached to the front longitudinal wall of the engagement structure and extending to or towards the centreline of the central longitudinal channel, and a second,inner tab 16B having an engagement surface on its underside.Inner tab 16B projects from the base of the “U”-shapedmember 16A back towards the front longitudinal wall of the engagement member, without contacting the front wall. Both “U”-shapedmember 16A andinner tab 16B are substantially co-planar althoughinner tab 16B is able to flex out of the plane of the “U”-shaped member, particularly upwardly. As shown, thetop tooth 24 of theprotrusion 22 engages with a set of ratchet or “saw tooth”-shapedteeth 17 dispersed on the engagement surface on the underside of retainingtab 16 in a planar or linear fashion. The retainer or retainingclip 16 may also include a lower engagement surface which is effectively the base or floor of the longitudinal channel formed in the upper surface of theengagement member 10. An opposinglower tooth 17A (preferably a pair of aligned, and laterally-spaced, with respect toupper ratchet teeth 17,lower teeth 17A—seeFIG. 5A ), facing oppositely to the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17, may also form part ofclip 16, located on or formed as a part of the floor/base of the longitudinal channel in/on theupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 in a manner that enables lower tooth/teeth 17A to flex out of the plane of the floor of the channel, particularly deflecting downwardly. Lower tooth/teeth 17A engage(s) thebottom tooth 25 of thetrim member 20 when it is situated on theupper surface 14 with protrusion(s) 22 located in the channel and makes it more difficult to completely remove/disengage thetrim member 20 fromengagement structure 10. In an embodiment, the contact surfaces of thelower tooth 17A and thebottom tooth 25 are steeper than those of the upper ratchet tooth/teeth 17 andupper tooth 24 such that it requires a greater amount of force to dislodge thetrim member 20 from the lower tooth and remove it entirely from theengagement structure 10. It will be appreciated that a retainer having only a first engagement surface withratchet teeth 17 would be effective at retainingtrim member 20. - Whilst the retaining
clip 16 andprotrusion 22 are depicted in the drawing figures as having seven teeth and two teeth, respectively, any suitable number may be employed. - Though depicted as having a substantially flat cross-sectional profile, the main body of the
trim member 20 may have any suitably-shaped profile required by a particular application or selected for its eye-appeal. For example, thetrim member 20 may have a substantially curved profile and may be substantially concave of convex. - Similarly, whilst the
protrusion 22 and retainingclip 16 are shown as having generally flat profiles, they may be curved or alternatively shaped providing they are able to engage in the manner described above. - In use, the
trim member 20 is positioned above theupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 and theprotrusion 22 is guided into a leading edge or mouth of the or each retainingclip 16 between the “U”-shapedmember 16A and the base or floor of the longitudinal channel in/on theupper surface 14 of the engagement structure. Thebarbed tip 23 of theprotrusion 22 is pushed into engagement withteeth trim member 20 towards the front face of the door 40 (i.e., to the right inFIG. 4 ) so thatteeth 17 and/or 17A deflect upwardly/downwardly and allow thebarbed tip 23 to be positioned as illustrated inFIG. 4 withbottom tooth 25 now retained behind lower tooth/teeth 17A andtop tooth 24 now engaged with the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17. In an embodiment, the leading faces of the top 24 and bottom 25 teeth of thebarbed tip 23 are shaped so as to deflect the “U”-shapedmember 16A and its set ofupper ratchet teeth 17 and opposing lower tooth/teeth 17A such that theprotrusion 22 can advance within the retainingclip 16, withtop tooth 24 stepping through engagement with each subsequent ratchet tooth of theset 17. In an embodiment, the top 24 and/or bottom 25 teeth are shaped so as to make retraction/removal of theprotrusion 22 from the retaining clip relatively more difficult, for example by arranging the leading (or forward-facing) faces ofteeth 24/25 inclined less steeply than the trailing (or rearward-facing) faces. In an embodiment, the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17 and/or opposing lower tooth/teeth 17A of the retainingclip 16 are shaped similarly to the shape ofteeth 24/25 (i.e., with their leading/forward-facing/insertion faces inclined less steeply than the trailing/rearward-facing/removal faces) so as to allow theprotrusion 22 to enter the retainingclip 16 more easily than it can be extracted (i.e., “ratcheting”). By providing a series of teeth in the form of the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17, theprotrusion 22 may be discreetly advanced within the retainingclip 16, thereby adjusting the front-rear position of the trim member 20 (that is, in the lateral direction of the trim member) relative to theengagement structure 10. Whilst the opposing lower tooth/teeth 17A acts as a back stop to help prevent theprotrusion 22 from being entirely withdrawn from the retainingclip 16 and disengaged from theengagement structure 10. -
FIG. 5A shows a plan view of a retainingclip 16 on theupper surface 14 of theengagement structure 10 according to an embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment a pair of opposinglower teeth 17A are provided on theengagement structure 10 and are partially surrounded by a cut-away or aperture such that the opposinglower teeth 17A are each provided on the end of a tab or finger extending from the main body of theengagement structure 10. This arrangement provides greater flexibility such that the opposinglower teeth 17A may deflect downwards so as to accept thebarbed tip 23 of theprotrusion 22 and spring back into place to impede its extraction. -
FIG. 5B shows a perspective view up through the body of theengagement structure 10 and depicts the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17 provided on tab orfinger 16B formed within the “U”-shapedmember 16A extending from the sidewall of theengagement structure 10. When engaging theprotrusion 22 of thetrim member 20, the terminal or free end of the tab is able to deflect owing to its cantilever design and allow thebarbed tip 23 to advance along the set ofupper ratchet teeth 17. Similarly, when theprotrusion 22 is being partially withdrawn, theratchet teeth 17 located deeper within the retaining clip 16 (i.e., towards the free end of thetab 16B) are able to deflect so that thebarbed tip 23 can move to the left inFIG. 4 . This allows thetrim member 20 to be retained by the engagement structure during repositioning within the retainingclip 16, thus adjusting the front to rear position oftrim member 20 relative toengagement structure 10, and therefore door/drawer 40. -
FIGS. 6A and 6B show arefrigerator 30 having lower 40 and upper 40A front doors. Each door has an outer, decorative panel mounted to it, such asouter panel 41.FIG. 6A depicts the refrigeratorlower door 40 with thetrim system 1 of an embodiment of the present invention removed, whereasFIG. 6B depicts the refrigeratorlower door 40 with thetrim system 1 installed on theupper surface 14 of itsengagement structure 10. Thetrim system 1 is nevertheless suitable of installation on the top surface of the upper 40A door, or on refrigerators and/or other electrical appliances having only a single door, or on the upper surface of drawers such as freezer drawers, as required. Furthermore, in addition to providing a trim system where thetrim member 20 is securely fastened to the door/drawer, the disclosed invention enables a significant range of front to rear adjustment oftrim member 20 so that, for example, a gap between the door/drawer and an outer panel of an integrated appliance can be hidden from view while still also covering the underlying structure of the top of the door from view. For this purpose, it will be appreciated fromFIG. 4 that the lateral width (from front to rear) oftrim member 20 is greater than the front to rear thickness ofengagement structure 10 so that, in some embodiments, a total adjustment of around 6 mm in a front to rear direction may be achieved. It will therefore be appreciated that the above-described trim system provides a “no fastener” top trim to the door or drawer of an appliance and so installation and adjustment is relatively simple, convenient, and tool-free. - The foregoing description of the invention includes preferred forms thereof. Modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims (20)
1. A trim system for a door or drawer of an electrical appliance, the trim system comprising:
an engagement structure having a retainer having a first engagement surface, the first engagement surface having a plurality of ratchet teeth; and
a trim member having a first, outward facing, surface and a second, inward facing, surface;
wherein the second surface of the trim member includes a protrusion configured to engage with the first engagement surface of the retainer, such that the trim member is secured to the engagement structure; and
wherein the protrusion has a first tooth configured to engage the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface.
2. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the retainer comprises a retaining clip, the retaining clip formed by the first engagement surface and a second engagement surface opposing the first engagement surface, the second engagement surface having one or more ratchet tooth/teeth, and wherein the protrusion also has a second tooth configured to engage the one or more ratchet tooth/teeth of the second engagement surface.
3. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the first engagement surface has at least two ratchet teeth, each of which is engageable with the first tooth, the at least two ratchet teeth arranged spaced apart such that the protrusion may be secured within the retainer to at least a first and second extent.
4. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the first engagement surface is provided on a first tab.
5. The trim system of claim 2 , wherein the second engagement surface is provided on a second tab.
6. The trim system of claim 4 , wherein the first tab has a free end and an opposite, fixed end, attached to a main body of the engagement structure.
7. The trim system of claim 6 , wherein the fixed end of the first tab on which the first engagement surface is provided is arranged to receive the protrusion of the trim member.
8. The trim system of claim 5 , wherein the second tab has a free end and an opposite, fixed end, attached to a main body of the engagement structure, wherein the free end of the second tab on which the second engagement surface is provided is arranged to receive the protrusion of the trim member.
9. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the engagement structure is formed by injection moulding a plastics material and the trim member is formed from metal.
10. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface, or the first tooth, or both, have an insertion face and a removal face, wherein the removal face is inclined more steeply than the insertion face such that removal of the protrusion from the retainer is impeded relative to its insertion.
11. The trim system of claim 2 , wherein each of the one or more ratchet tooth/teeth of the second engagement surface, or the second tooth, or both, have an insertion face and a removal face, wherein the removal face is inclined more steeply than the insertion face such that removal of the protrusion from the retaining clip is impeded relative to its insertion.
12. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the trim member and/or engagement structure is/are substantially elongate, extending predominantly in a longitudinal direction.
13. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface are displaced across a lateral width of the engagement structure, substantially perpendicularly to a longitudinal extension direction of the engagement structure.
14. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the engagement structure further comprises one or more abutments configured to prevent relative movement of the trim member in the longitudinal direction of its extension.
15. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the engagement structure is provided on an exposed top or bottom surface of a door or drawer.
16. The trim system of claim 1 , wherein the protrusion comprises a right angle, having a first portion extending in a direction substantially normal to the second surface of the trim member, and a second portion extending in a direction substantially parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
17. The trim system of claim 16 , wherein the first tooth of the protrusion is located on a first surface of the second portion, parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
18. The trim system of claim 2 , wherein the protrusion comprises a right angle, having a first portion extending in a direction substantially normal to the second surface of the trim member, and a second portion extending in a direction substantially parallel to the second surface of the trim member, wherein the first tooth of the protrusion is located on a first surface of the second portion, parallel to the second surface of the trim member, and wherein the second tooth of the protrusion is located on a second surface of the second portion, opposite the first surface.
19. The trim system of claim 2 , wherein, when the protrusion is located in and engaged by the retaining clip, the first and second engagement surfaces of the retaining clip are parallel to the second surface of the trim member.
20. An electrical appliance comprising:
a cabinet having an opening closable by a door or drawer fitted thereto, and
a trim system for the door or drawer, the trim system comprising:
an engagement structure having a retainer having a first engagement surface, the first engagement surface having a plurality of ratchet teeth; and
a trim member having a first outward facing surface and a second inward facing surface;
wherein the second surface of the trim member includes a protrusion configured to engage with the first engagement surface of the retainer, such that the trim member is secured to the engagement structure; and
wherein the protrusion has a first tooth configured to engage the plurality of ratchet teeth of the first engagement surface.
