12 Claims.
This invention relates to box inserts and has for an object to provide an improved form of box inserts of the type commonly known as frogs which improved form of box inserts may be inserted into the box and held in proper position therein without the necessity of pasting or gluing the insert in its folded form, but which is held in both folded position and inserted position by means of a pair of fastening clips penetrating through the frog end side of the box.
Previous to this invention it has been necessary to fold the frogs and paste them in folded position as well as to paste them into the box in which they are being inserted. Such frogs are generally used to change the interior formation of the boxes so as to make them suitable to receive hosiery, gloves, or other articles when the latter are folded therein in the usual manner for shipment, display, and sale. With such previously known box there is of course an appreciable time element in their construction and manufacture which must be allowed for the glue or paste to dry after the frog has been folded and has been inserted into the box.
Obviously, this necessary drying operation consumes an appreciable amount of time and hence of storage space while the frogs are drying into their proper position, thereby appreciably delaying completion of the manufacture of the box inserts in position before they can be used for their intended purpose.
The frogs of this invention are so folded and scored that only one surface thereof will be visible after they have been inserted in the box, thereby providing the economy that only one surface of the box need be properly finished, the under surface being entirely concealed and hence being allowed to remain in the rough. With the previous frogs it was necessary that the manufacturing process be completed at the factory if the frogs were to be properly inserted in the box due to the previously considered essential glueing or pasting operation. A further difficulty with the previously known frogs was the difficulty of properly centering the frogs along the side of the "box in which they are being inserted, for the frogs were intended to principally alter only the central sections of the box.
With the present invention, however, while the box will preferably be made at the factory, yet it is possible to quickly and easily place the frogs of the present invention in proper position in the box at any time and by keeping a supply of frogs on hand in blank position the retailer may when necessary quickly and easily put them into pc- 1935, Serial No. 13,052
sition with the assistance of an ordinary paper stapling machine such as is usually available in every office. The frog insert of this invention in all of the various forms which are herein illustrated not only eliminate the necessity of the pasting or glueing operation, but they also eliminate the difficulty of centering them in position along the sides of the box in which they are being inserted, inasmuch as one important feature of this invention is that frogs of this invention are self-centering in the sides of the box, eliminating the previous serious difficulty.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, as will hereinafter become apparent, this invention comprises the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter set forth, disclosed and shown on the accompanying drawings. In these drawings,

In each of the forms of this invention the frog is made from a single sheet or blank of sheet material, preferably card board suitably finished on one surface thereof, which has been properly cut and scored according to the form of invention which is being provided.
There is shown at 10 the blank providing the frog of one form of this invention, this blank I0 being suitably scored and cut. This blank Ill includes a vertical spacing section II which is rectangular in outline, as provided by the scoring i2 along one side thereof and the scoring 13 at the other two sides thereof. Connected to the vertical spacing section II along the scoring [2 is the platform extension I4, a scoring I5 being provided on the platform extension l4 parallel to and opposite the scoring I2. Extending from the scoring I5 which it will be observed is somewhat longer than the scoring I2, is the rear flap I6, rectangular in outline. The scoring I5 being substantially longer than the scoring I2, is connected to the scoring I2 at the ends of the scoring I5 and scoring I2 by means of scorings I1,
the scorings I1 forming the angles substantially as shown with the scorings I2 and I5.
Extending from the scorings I! are the rear angular tabs I8. The tabs I8 are provided with edgings I9 parallel to the scorings I1 and with one connecting edging at right angles to the edging I9 and the scorings I1, the fourth side of the tabs I8 as at 2| being angular inasmuch as a slit or cut is provided in the blank I0 which extends from the edging I9 to the scoring I I. Extending from the vertically spacing sections along the opposite scorings I 3 are the front angular tabs 22, these front angular tabs 22 being separated from the rear angular tabs I8 by the slits or cuts already describedpproviding the edging 2| of the rear angular tab I8. The front angular tabs 22 terminate in scorings 23 from which extend the wings 24.
It will be observed that the wings 24 are provided with edgings 25 at right angles to the lower edging 26, which edging 26 extends in a straight line along the lower edge both of the front angular tab 22 and the vertical spacing section II. The scoring I2 is connected to the edging 25 by an angular edging 21 extending from the slit or out along the edge 2| of the rear angular tab I 8. As will be apparent, the angle be- ;tween the edging 21 and the vertical edging 25 at one end or the scoring I2 at the other end may vary within such limits as will leave the vertical edging 25 still in existence, but at least no greater in length than the scoring l3. It will be further observed that the edging 20 is of substantially the identical length as the scoring I3, and further that the edging 28 of the rear flap I6 will likewise preferably be of this same length but will certainlybe of no greater length. As shown the scoring 23 is of lesser length and the edging 25 is of still lesser length than the scoring I3, but as already described, the scorings 23 and edging 25 might be of the same length as the scoring I3, but cannot be of any greater length v provided that the frog I0 when in operative position in the box 29 is to have the platform extension I4 located in substantially the same plane as the top edge 39 of the box.
In operation the frog In which has been out and scored as already described will be folded at right angles about the scoring I2 and I5. The platform extension I4 will thereby be placed in a horizontal position while the rear flap I6 and the vertical spacing section I I will each be placed in a vertical position. The rear angular tabs I8 will then befolded about their scorings II thereby bringing the edging I9 into the same plane with the edging 26. If the edging 28 of the rear flap I6 is of the same length as the scoring I 3 and edging 20, then the rear edging 3| of the rear flap I6 will likewise be in this same plane. The platform extension I4 will thus be supported'by the vertical spacing section I I and the rear angular tabs I8, and when the rear flap I6 is pro- ;vided will be supported along its rear edge or scoring I 5 by such rear flap I6. The front angular tabs 22 will then be folded back along their scoring I3, the dimensions of these front angular tabs 22 being such that when in folded position the scoring 23 will substantially coincide with he edging 29 of the rear angular tab I8. The wings 24 are then folded forwardly until they extend in planes substantially parallel to the plane of the vertical spacing section. The entire dimensions of the blank ID are so proportioned with 5 relation to the box 29 that the distance between the edging 25 when thus folded in the assembled position is substantially equal to the inside.distance between the end 3| of the box 29. With such dimensions it is obvious that the wings 24 m will act to center vertical spacing section II and platform extension I4 along the sides 32 of the box 29. With the frogs thus properly assembled and self-centered in proper position, a stapling member 33 is inserted to the sides 32 of box 15 29 so as to enter one of each of the wings 24.
With this operation completed the box I0 is completely assembled, properly centered and securely fastened in proper position in the box 29.
The form of the frog 35 shown in Figures 4, 5 20 and 6, differs from the form of the box I!) of Figures 1, 2 and 3, principally in that the front angular tab and the wing extend from the angular side of the platform extension while the rear angular tab extends from the vertical edges of 25 the vertical spacing section. In this form of the invention there is a vertical spacing section 36 being connected by scoring 31 to the platform extension 38, a scoring 39 parallel to the scoring 31 and likewise to the edging 40 of vertical spac- 3O ing section 36, provides the division line between the platform extension 38 and the rear flap 4|, the rear flap 4I being substantially rectangular in outline, and hence provided with an edging 42 parallel to the scoring 39 and opposite side edging 43 at right angles to the edging 42 and scoring 39. Rectangular rear angular tabs 44 are secured to the vertical spacing section 36 by means of scoring 45, the lower edging of the rear angular tab 44 being a continuation in a straight line of the edging 40 while the edgings 46 are parallel to the scoring 45. The remaining edgings 41 extend in the same line with the scoring 31 and are cut or slit free of the edging 48 of the front angular tab 49. Extending from the front angular tab 49 is the wing 50 connected thereto by a scoring 5I which scoring 5| will be of substantially the same length as the scoring and edging 46, the-front angular tab 49 being connected to the platform extension 38 by a scoring 52 which is at right angles to the scoring 5I. The wing 50 is provided with an edging 53 which is parallel to the scoring 5|. As shown, the edging 54 is parallel to the scoring 52 while the edging 55 extends in a straight line from the scoring 39. If desired, 55 the edging 55 should vary until it became an extension of the scoring 52 and thus provide an angle between the edging 53 and 55 that would diminish from an obtuse angle to a right angle. Similarly, the angle between the edgings 53 and 59 here 60 shown as a right angle might instead be an obtuse angle just so lbng as the edging 53 and scoring 5| remain substantially parallel. The height of the assembled frog 35 is dependent on the length of the scoring 45 and edging 46 and when the rear flap is provided on the fact that the edging 43 is at least no greater than the scoring 45. This height is preferably the inside height of the box 56 so as to bring the plane of the platform extension 38 substantially parallel to the plane of the upper edges 51 of the box 56.
To assemble the frog 35 in the box 56, the blank is folded along the scoring 31 and 39 thereby allowing the platform extension 38 to extend in a, horizontal position. The rear angular tabs 44 are then folded along their scoring 45 bringing their edging 46 in the substantial coincidence with edging 43 and allowing the front angular tab 49 to be folded along their scoring 52. The Wings 59 are then folded forwardly along their scoring 5| until they are brought into planes parallel with the vertical spacing section 36 and likewise into the plane of the folded rear flap 4|. Staples 58 are then secured through the sides of the box 59 to extend through the wings 50, it being observed that the overall length of the box 35 including the wings 59 when in proper folded assembled position is substantially the same as the inside length of the box 56, thereby causing the wings 59 to automatically self-center the entire frog 35 within the box 56.
In the forms of the invention shown in Figures '7, 8 and 9, and in Figures 10, 11 and 12, the
principal feature distinguishing these forms from the two forms already described is the provision of an additional rear wing, which in the forms I, 8 and 9 extend from the rear angular tab and in the form shown in Figures 19, 11, and 12, extend from the rear flap. In the form shown in Figures '7, 8 and 9, the rear wing may be of lesser length than the front wing so that the front wing alone acting as a centering means for both the front and rear wings cooperate with the securing means, or as shown in Figures 10, 11 and 12, both the rear and the front wings may be of the same length whereby both act as centering wings as well as securing means.
The frog 5!! shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, includes the vertical spacing section 6! secured by scorings 62 to the platform extension 63. A rear flap 64 is secured by a scoring 65 to the platform extension 93, the scorings 62 and 65 being parallel and parallel to the edging 65 of rear flap 64 and 61 of vertical spacing section 6i. Rectangular front angular tabs 68 are secured by scorings 69 to the vertical spacin section 6! and front wings l9 rectangular in outline are secured by scorings II to the front angular tab. The rear angular tabs 12 are cut away from the front angular tabs 68 along an edging "l3, and are secured to the platform extension along a scoring 74 which extends from the ends of the scoring 62 to the ends of the scoring 65. The lower edging T5 of the rear angular tabs 72 extends parallel to the scorings 14. It continues on to provide a lower edging E6 of a rear wing Tl, the upper edging of the rear wing ll being in straight line continuation with the scoring 14 as at 18.
To assemble the frog 69 in the box 19, the platform extension 63 is folded so as to bring the same to a horizontal position while the rear flap 64 and the vertical spacing section 6| extend vertically downward therefrom. The angular tabs and wings likewise extend in vertical planes according to their respective scorings. The rear tabs 12 and rear wings Tl are placed behind the front tab 63 and the front wing 13. stapling means 88 are then secured to the side 8| of the box and pass through the wings Ti and 89. As will be observed particularly from Figure 9, only the wing 89 is in this form provided as a centering wing, although if desired the wing 'i'l could be made so to have substantially the same length as the wing 89 and similarly act as a centering wing. The overall length of the assembled frog 69 includes the centering wing being substantially equal to the inner length of the sides ill of box re thereby automatically centering the platform extension in proper position within the box 19.

The frog 82 shown in Figures 10, l1 and 12, differs principally from the frog 69 in that the rear wing herein provided extends from the rear flap instead of the rear angular tab, and further,
is of such length as to act as a centering wing as 5 well as a securing wing. Furthermore, the scoring between the rear wing and any adjacent portion is eliminated inasmuch as the wings extendin the same plane and are an integral part of the rear flap. The frog 82 includes the vertical spac- 10 ing section 83 rectangular in outline and secured by scorings 8:3 to the platform extension 85, which in turn is secured by scoring 86 to the rear flap 81. The rear flap 8? has wing portions at the end thereof forming an integral extension thereof so 15 that the entire length of the rear flap 8? coincides substantially with the inside length of the side 38 of the box 89 into which this frog 82 is to be assembled. Connected to the vertical spacing section 83 by scoring 99 are the front angular 20 tabs 9|, to which in turn are connected by scorings 92 the front wings 93. Rear angular tabs 94 are provided which have edgings 95 which are substantially equal in length to the scoring and has a lower edging 99 at right angles to 25 the edging 95. This rear angular tab 94 is connected to the platform extension 85 by a scoring 9?, which is parallel to the edging 96 and extends from the ends of the scoring 94 through the ends of the scoring 86. 30"
Although as shown the upper edging 98 is cut away at angle from the rear angular tab 94 and is at an angle to the lower edge of tab 9|, it will be obvious that this upper edging 98 could coincide with and be an extension of the scoring 35 84 if desired. To assemble the frog 82 in the box 89, the platform extension 85 is placed in a horizontal piane and the rear flap 8! with its integral wing folded at right angles thereto along the scoring 86, while the vertical spacing 40 section 83 is likewise folded at right angles along Rear angular tabs 94 are then folded into a vertical plane along their scorings 97 and the front angular tabs are folded along their scorings 99 so as to bring the front and rear tabs intoparallel plane and then the front wing 93 is folded forward into a plane parallel with the wing extension of the rear flap 81. The staple 99 is then secured through the side of the box 88 and through the extended wings 50 on rear flap 9i and the front wings 93, the wings acting to properly center the frog in this form just as in the previous forms of invention already described.
The novel features and the operation of this 5 device will be apparent from the foregoing description. While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this invention is not to be considered limited to the exact form disclosed and that changes 60 may be made therein within the scope of what is ciaimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is: 65
1. A box insert frog formed of single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position.
2. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet" of blank material comprising a horizontal platintegral extension of said rear flap, a securing form extension, a vertical spacing section, front andv rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, the overall length of said frog and said wings coinciding with the inside length of the box in which it is being inserted to make said frog self-locating.
3. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, a rear flap secured to said platform extension on the side opposite from said vertical spacing section, the depth of said rear flap substantially coinciding with the depth of said vertical spacing section.
4. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, and additional rear wings extending from said frog adapted to lie in a plane behind the front wings in assembled position.
5. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, and additional rear Wings extending from said frog adapted to lie in a plane behind the front wings in assembled position, said rear wings being an integral extension of said rear flap.
6. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, and additional rear wings extending from said frog adapted to lie in a plane behind the front wings in assembled position, said rear wings being integral extensions of said rear angular tab, and scoring providing said rear wings from said rear angular tab.
7. A box insert frog formed of a single sheet of blank material comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section, front and rear angular tab members depending from said platform extension and vertical spacing section, and wings extending from said front angular tab section, said wings being adapted to be secured to the box in which the frog is inserted to hold the frog in assembled position, and additional rear wings extending from said frog adapted to lie in a plane behind the front wings in assembled position, said rear wingsbeingan means for holding said frog in the box comprising stapling means extending through the sides of the box and each of the wings.
8. A glueless self-locating frog, comprising a 5 platform extension in a horizontal plane, a vertical spacing section secured thereto by scoring,

9. A glueless self-locating box insert frog comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section secured to said platform extension by scoring, a rear flap secured to said plat- 25;:
form extension by scoring on the opposite edge thereof from said vertical spacing section, a rear angular tab extending from and secured to said vertical spacing section by scoring, a front angular tab extending from and secured to said platform extension by scoring, and a wing secured to and extending from said front angular tab, whereby in folded position said front angular tab may overlie said rear angular tab, and said wing may be secured to the side of the box in which the 35 frog is inserted, the overall length of said frog and said extended wing substantially coinciding with the overall inside length of the box in which it is to be inserted so as to self-locate said frog in proper position therein.
10. A glueless self-locating frog, comprising a platform extension in a horizontal plane, a vertical spacing section secured thereto by scoring, front angular tabs secured to said vertical spacing section at each end thereof, wings secured at each end of said front angular tab, rear angular tabs secured to said platform extension by scoring and folded into a vertical plane, the height of said vertical spacing section substantially coinciding with the height of said rear angular tab said rear angular tabs and secured thereto by scoring, and rear Wings also assisting in securing the frog in location.
11. A glueless self-locating box insert frog comprising a horizontal platform extension, a vertical spacing section secured to said platform extension by scoring, a rear flap secured to said platform extension by scoring on the opposite edge thereof from said vertical spacing section, a rear angular tab extending from and secured to said vertical spacing section by scoring, a front angular tab extending from and secured to said platform extension by scoring, a wing secured to and extending from said front angular tab, whereby in folded position said front angular tab may overlie said rear angular tab, and said wing mav 15 J be secured to the side of the box in which the frog is inserted, the overall length of said frog and said extended wing substantially coinciding with the overall inside length of the box in which it is to be inserted so as to self-locate said frog in proper position therein, rear wing sections integrally extending from said rear flap a distance substantially equal to the assembled length of said frog and said first mentioned wing to thereby cooperate with said first mentioned wing in locating and securing the frog in location.
12. A box insert frog formed from a single blank of sheet material comprising a horizontal extension platform, a vertical spacing section, and front and rear angular tabs projecting from said platform and vertical spacing section, oppositely extending wings foldably connected to the frog for holding the tabs in position and for centering the frog within a box to which it is secured.
