SAFETY MILK BOTTLE CONTAINER Filed Jan. 14, 1955 william H. yanumff Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE l 2,023,826 SAFETY MILK BOTTLE CONTAINER Canada Application January 14, 1935, Serial No. 1,815`
Z Claims.
My invention relates to holders for milk bottles, especially adapted to household service and it particularly has for an object to provide a sanitary, safe bottle container of a very simple and inexpensive construction, one which can be sold to the customer at a low price or even given away by milk dealers to their customers if desired.
A further object is to provide a milk bottle holder in the form of a box or housing rigidly supported on the door jamb or frame and so constructed that it cannot be opened from the outside save by means of an especially constructed nkey.
A further object is to provide a milk bottle holder of the character above referred to in which provision is made to hold a bottle entirely enclosed in the box or receptacle and to provide an auxiliary holder for a second bottle to be suspended beneath the box or receptacle and held against removal when the box is locked.
Another object is to provide a milk bottle holder of the above indicated character in which the lock construction is such that it cannot be picked.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all oi which will be first fully described in the following detailed description and then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a doorway with my invention in place.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a portion of the same, showing the box or container open for the insertion of the milk bottles in the box and auxiliary holder respectively.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the lock.
Figure 5 is a detail elevation and part section of the key device for releasing the bolt of the lock.
In the drawing, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, I represents the outer face of a door frane against the side of which adjacent the door my present invention is designed to be mounted. The box or container is preferably made of sheet metal and consists of side walls 2,
Extending from the front wall to the back wall 10 of the container is the casing 9 of the latch device. This casing comprises a tube 9, the ends of which are welded or otherwise secured to the front and back walls 5 and 6 of the box, the said Walls being apertured in alignment with the in- 15 terior of the tube 9. As best shown in Figure 4, the tube 9 has indentations Ill which serve as spring stops, and it contains two springs II and I8, respectively, separated by the stops I0.
Within the tube 9 is a ring I2 against which 20 one end of the spring I I presses. When no key is in place the ring I2 is stopped by engagement with the front wall 5, the hole 5cc of which is of slightly less diameter than the internal diameter of the tube 9 to serve as a stop. The hole 25 5w, however, is of suilicient diameter to permit the insertion of the key 2l, hereinafter again referred to. Slidable within the tube 9 is the latch bolt I3, the bolt having a collar I4 against which one end of the spring I8 presses. The latch 30 bolt I3 has an extension I5 that passes through a hole 6x in the rear wall 6 and projects into the transverse recess I in order to cooperate with the tongue 23. The latch bolt I3 has a neck I6 and a tapered head I'I. The diameter of the head 35 I I does not exceed that of the internal diameter of the ring I2.
I9 designates the supporting plate which has a ilange I9 to overlie the adjacent wall of the container when the container is in the closed or 40 locked position. The plate I9 is provided with keyhole slots 20 extended in an inclined position so as to cooperate with the face of the door 33 to hold the container on the door frame. The slots 20 also cooperate with the -screws 2| by means of 45 which the plate I9 is held against the side face of the door frame I, as best shown in Figure 2.
23 is the latching tongue which is projected from the face of the plate I9 adjacent the door. 'Ihe tongue 23 is of a somewhat resilient nature 50 and has a hole 22 for the reception of the latching end, I5, of the latch bolt I3 when the box is swung inwardly to the closed position.
24 are hinges, which hinge the box to the plate I9, and 25 is a spring clip, preferably stamped 55 box or receptacle and also for the auxiliary receiver.
The key by which the box may be unlocked consists of a tube 21 having a finger button 28 at one end, the tube and butto-n slidably receiving a rod 29, one end of which is Ysplit at 20 to constitute resilient tongs 30. A spring 32 is carried on the rod 29, and at the outer end the rod is provided with a thumb button 3|. The spring 32 serves to push the tube 21 over the split end of the tongs 30 to hold the same together retracted within the tube 21. It is to be understood that the rod 29 adjacent the slotted end 30 is of tubular form. The free ends of the tongs 30 are slightly inwardly bent to t over the head I1 of the latch bolt.
In order to unlock the box the key is inserted through the opening 5x. As the key is inserted through the opening 5r the end of the tube 21 engages the ring I2 and pushes itinwardly. At the same time the operator draws the members 28 and 3| together to allow the tongs 30 to split and pass over the head I1. Y The tube 21, as the operator releases it, causes the tongs to grasp the head I1. This grasping action is effected by the spring 32 pressing against the button 2B to force the tube 21 over the split ends. The key now havingA been secured in grasping position to the head I1, the operator simply pulls on the head 3I, which withdraws the end I5 of the bolt and releases the box from the latching tongue 23 so that the box may be swung to the open position for the insertion or removal of the milk bottles. Y
The ange I 9m, hereinbefore referred to, allows for the thickness of the hinges and screw heads, etc., and prevents a space being left between the hinge side of the box and the plate I9 when the` box is swung to the closed position, thus making it impossible to get an instrument between the box and the plate for the purpose of bending the latching tongue away from the latch bolt.
' In order that the operator may not inadvertently leave the key in the tube 9 after he has released it from the head I 1, I have provided the spring I I and collar I2, hereinbefore referred to. As soon as the operator releases the tongs 5 30 by pulling back on the button 29, while holding the button 3| against movement, the spring II will tend to force the key out. Should the operator let go of the key it will be ejected by the action of the spring II. 10
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. l5
What I claim is:
1. In a milk bottle holder, a support, a bottle holding box hinged thereto and having an open face, means cooperative with said support to close said face, a device for locking the box in the closed 20 position, said device comprising a latching tongue carried by the support and a locking device carried by the box, the locking device' comprising a. l'atch bolt, a tubular bolt receiver and container, spring means in the bolt receiver and container 25 for projecting an end of the bolt to engage said latching tongue, said bolt having a head within the receiver for receiving a gripping means insertable into the tubular receiver through the front end of the same. 30
2. In a milk bottle holder, a support, a bottle holding box hinged thereto and having an open face, means cooperative with said support to close said face, a device for locking the box in the closed position, said device comprising a latching tongue carried by the support and a locking device carried by the box, the locking device comprising a latch bolt, a tubular bolt receiver and container, spring means in the bolt receiver and container Y for projecting an end of the bolt to engage said V latching tongue, said bolt having a head within the receiver for receiving a gripping means insertable into the tubular receiver through the front end of the same, a guard collar in the tubular receiver and spring means normally holding said collar beyond the end of the bolt, the guard collar being adapted to be pushed out of the way by the grippingv means to enable the gripping means to pass over the bol't head into a position to grip the same.
