(ci. 10s-iss) The present invention relates to railway car trucks and seeks to provide an improved construction particularly adapted for a six-wheel truck and in which, while rigid side frames are employed, the parts are connected and arranged to provide exibility and thereby relieve the strains on the truck structure when in use. v
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the l0 preferred form in the accompanying drawings,
and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

'Ihe truck is provided with separate rigid side frames IU, each provided with pedestal jaws II preferably formed integral therewith, and within which the journal boxes I2 are mounted in the usual manner for relative vertical movement. The journal boxes engage the journals of the 35 axles I3 which carry the wheels I4. The upper p edge of the side frame is substantially horizontal and it is provided between the pedestal jaws with depending truss-shaped portions I5, provided with openings for receiving the ends of a pair of cross bolsters I6 and bolster supporting springs Il.
Each side frame is preferably formed of a single, integral, chambered or hollow casting and comprises spaced inner and outer side walls I8 connected at their upper and lower edges by transverse webs I9 and 20. Transverse webs 2| between the inner and outer side walls surround the bolster openings and provide seats 22 for the bol/ster springs and guides 23 for the ends of the cross bolsters. Other transverse webs 24 be? tween the side walls form the inner walls of the pedestal jaws. The side walls above the bolster openings and above the pedestal jaws are provided With heavy reinforcing beads 25 and 26. 55 The latter are arched as shown and'merge into the downwardly inclined arms oi' the trussshaped portions I5.
The side frames are supported from the wheel axles by equalizin'g means including supporting springs. As shown, equalizer bars 21 are disposed 5 within the upper hollow portions of the side A frames and are fulcrumed thereto by means of heavy pivots 28. The ends of the equalizer bars rest upon coiled springs 29 which in turn are carried by the journal boxes. 'I'he inner arms of 10 Vthe equalizer bars 2l are twice the' length of the l outer arms thereof to properly equalize th load on the wheel axles.
The equalizer bars arranged in the upper hollow portions of the side frames extend over the'lll bolster openings, and this arrangement affords ample height for heavy springs 29 by which the side frames are supported from the wheel axle. Also, this arrangement oi the equalizing means and the deep, truss-shaped portions I5 of the 20 side frames, aord ample room for large bolster openings and the heavy bolster-supporting springs I1, such as required for the heavy loads usual in modern practice. At the same time the side frames are compact both in length and 25 height and ample clearance is provided.
'I'he cross bolsters I6 are provided at their ends with shoulders' 30 and lugs 3| (see Fig. 1) which interlock with the column guides 23 on opposite sides of the upper portions of the bolster openings 30 in the side frames. The bolster ends are adapted to be inserted through the enlarged lower portions of the openings and are held in proper position by the springs I1. The cross bolsters thus hold in the side frames in proper spaced relation 35 and flexibly connect the same in a manner permitting considerable independent vertical movement thereof. The side frames are also exibly connected at their ends by cross bars 32 which extend between outwardly and inwardly pro- 40 jecting oiset portions 33 at the ends of the side frames. As shown in Fig. 6, each bar 32 is connected to the one side frame by a horizontal pivot 34 and extends within a pocket formed in the projection 33 on the other side frame. 45 A spring 35 arranged within this pocket extends between a nut 33 and the inner end wall 3l of the pocket to flexibly connect the side frame and cross bar 32. As shown, the bar is provided with a collar 33 which engages the end wall 50 31 and preferably the engaging faces of these and is supported from the cross bolsters by in.
Y same in parallel relation. Arms 42 at the lower ends of the end sections 4| extend beneath the cross bolsters and are providedwith pockets for receiving the lower ends of the hanger links 40. Pivot pins 43 extend through the lower ends of the hangers and through the side walls of the pockets or openings in the arms 42. At the centers of the arched end portions 4I, they are provided with upwardly and outwardly extending parts 44 which form or provide seats for suitable side bearings. The intermediate portion of the center bolster comprises a center bearing 45 of usual form and spaced inner and outer side walls. and 41. The inner side walls 46 are vertically disposed and are provided with horizontal stinening ilanges 48 at their lower edges and the outer side walls 41 are inclined downwardly and are substantially tangent to the curved centers of the end portions of the center bolster. Also, these outer side walls are provided at their lower 4edges with vertically disposed stiiening webs 49.
The inner and outer side walls -46l and 41 and their stiffening anges or webs 4l and 49 extend between and are 'cast integral with the arched end portions.
The vcross bolsters I6 are each formed of a single integral casting and as most clearly shown in Figs. 3 and '1 are of hollow box section having top. bottom and side walls, They are provided with longitudinally extending, vertically disposed stiffening webs 50 extending between the top and bottom walls, portions 5| of which are spaced apart to form pockets or openings $2 through which the hanger links 40 extend. The pocket forming walls 5I extend between the top and bottom walls of the bolster and are preferably, connected to the side walls by stiifening ribs 53. Also, the top and bottom walls .opposite the pockets are preferably increased in thickness as indicated by dotted lines in Fig.' '1. At the upper ends of the pockets the bolsters are provided with upwardly projecting ears 54 whichreceive' the upper ends of the hanger links 4l'and through which the hanger pivots 55 extend.
The upper portions of the side frames are pro- A vided at their ends and above the bolster openings with brackets or offsets 58 and 51 that are preferably integral with the side frames. Brake hangers il are pivotally connected to the end oifsets 5B and intermediate brake hangers. 59 are pivotally conected to the oifsets l1 and extend downwardly through openings Sil (see Figs. 5 and '1) formed in the cross bolsters adjacent their ends. Preferably, as shown, the portions of the top and bottom walls of the bolsters are thickened adjacent the openings.
The hangers support brake heads 6I which are preferably connected by brake'beams 52.' The brake hangers are disposed in the planes of the wheels and brake levers disposed inside of the wheels are connected to the brake beams. The brake levers on opposite sides of each wheel are connected'by pull rods 04 and those on opposite sides of each cross bolster are connected at their upper ends bypull rods I5 and these rods are emaged by supporting and guiding rollers 66 mounted on the oifsets l1 .of the side frames. Springstraps l1 flxedtothebottom wallsof thecrossbolstersextendbenesththebrakebeam side frames, equalizers fulcrumed on the side v frames and supported at their ends on the wheel axles, cross bolsters spring supported by and detachably interlocked with the side frames for spacing and flexibly connecting the side frames in a manner permitting their independent vertical movement, and a center bolster carried by thecross bolsters and maintaining the same in parallel relation and havinga limited movement relative thereto transversely of the truck. substantially as described.
2. A six wheel car truck comprising wheel axles, rigid side frames having pedestal jaws for each wheel axle and intermediate bolster openings, equalizing spring means for supporting the side frame from the wheel axles, cross bolsters detachably interlocked with said bolster openings, and spacing and flexibly connecting the side frames in a manner permitting their independent vertical movement, bolster supporting springs in the lower portions of said openings, a center bolster interposed between and maintaining the cross bolster in parallel relation, and hanger links for supporting the same from the cross bolsters, substantially as described.
3. A six wheel truck comprising wheel axles, separate rigid side frames having pedestal jaws for each wheel axle.and intermediate trussshaped portions provided with bolster openings, equalizers fulcrumed on said side frames extending over the bolster openings and spring supported on the wheel axles, bolsters detachably interlocked with the bolster openings and spacing and flexibly connecting the side frames in a. manner permitting their independent vertical movement v(bolster supporting springs in the lower portions of said openings, and a center bolster mounted for transverse movement on the cross bolsters and maintaining the latter in parallel relation, substantially as described.
4. A six wheel car truck comprising separate rigid side frames, equalizer means including supporting springs for supporting the side frame on the wheel axles, cross bolsters and end bars iiexibly connecting the side frames and a center bolster carried-by the cross bolsters and movablyrelatively thereto transversely oi the truck.
5. A six wheel car truck comprising separate rigid side frames provided with pedestal jaws and intermediate truss-shaped portions provided with bolster openings, spring supported cross-bolsters 60 and end bars flexibly connecting the side frames, and a centre bolster ilexibly mounted on the cross bolsters.

In a six-wheel car truck, a rigid cast metal side frame provided with pedestal jaws and intermediate truss-shaped portions provided with bolster openings, the side frame having inner and outer side walls, transverse webs at its upper and .lower portions and transverse webs about the bolster openings forming spring seats and bolster guides, and equalizer bars fulcrumed in the portions of the side frame between the inner and outer side walls thereof and extending over the bolster openings and pedestal jaws, substantially as described.
7. A rigid cast metal side frame for six wheel trucks having integral pedestal jaws and intermediate truss-shaped portions provided with openings for cross holsters and bolster springs, the side frame having spaced inner and outer walls connected by transverse webs at its upper and lower edges and extending about the bolster openings and integral inwardly oiset portions at its ends and directly above the bolster openings for supporting brake hangers. the upper portion of the side frames being arranged to receive fulcrumed equalizer bars with the latter disposed between the inner and outer side walls thereof and extending over the bolster openings and pedestal jaws, substantially as described.
8. A six-wheel car truck comprising wheel axles, separate hollow cast metal side frames having pedestal jaws and intermediate portions provided with bolster openings, equalizer bars disposed within the upper portions of the side frames and fulcrumed thereon, said bars exand a. center bolster mounted for transverse movement on the cross holsters and arranged to engage and maintain the latter in parallel relation, substantially as described.
