The present invention relates to reboxesfor boilers and has particular reference to the internal reboxes of boilers of the so-called locomotive type.
The general object of improved water steami the invention is to provide ng and circulating structure of, the general kind disclosed in Patent No. 1,894,613, granted to me January 17, 1933, in combination with rebox sheet structure of improved form whereby to provide for expansion and contraction of the iirebox crown sheet and side sheets longitudinally of the iirebox, and to provide for expansion and contraction of the water steaming and circulating structure.

In the embodiment illustrated the flrebox is provided with a plurality of transverse hollow 5 water steaming and circulating members indicated generally at A.l 'Ihese members serve to connect the side sheet structure of the rebox with the crown sheet, but instead of being connected directly to plane portions of the side sheets and crown sheet, they are connected to inwardly bulged portions of this sheet structure, which provide for longitudinal expansion and contraction of the inner iirebox sheets.
As shown in Fig. 5, the inner iirebox sheet forming the crown and side sheets is cut away -shaped form and adapted to be sealed at its edges as by welds 45 to the edges of opening 42 in the 25 rebox sheet structure. The sheet 44 is inwardly bulged as at 46 to provide a ridge extending longitudinally of the sheet 44 for substantially the full length of the legs 48 of the sheet 44 and across the intermediate portion of the sheet 44 connect- 30 lng the legs of the U-shaped portion.
Each circuiator A, in the embodiment illustrated, is of generally T-shaped form having arms 50 connected at their ends to suitable openings 52 in the inwardly bulged parts of the legs 48 of 35 sheet 44. Preferably these connections are made by welding, as shown at 54 in Figs. 2 and 3. The stem 56 of the circulator A connects the arms Eil with an opening 58 in the inwardly bulged part of the intermediate portion of sheet 44, the 40 connection preferably being made by means of a weld 6i! around the edge of the opening 58. As will be evident from the drawings, the arms 50 are generally tubular in form, and the arms of adjacent circulators serve to support between 45 the specific shape of the T-shaped circulator mem- 2 bers A may vary considerably, as also may the manner of fabricating these members.- In fabricating the structure, however, I prefer to form and weld together the several parts making up the structure shown in Fig. 4, after which this structure is advantageously inserted as a unit into the opening 42 of the firebox sheetl structure and welded thereto. Obviously, if desired however, the sheet 44 can be welded in place to the inner ilrebox sheet and the circulator thereafter welded to the sheet M.
It will be apparent from the drawings that the inwardly bulged portions or ridges 46 provide resilience in longitudinal direction for taking up expansion and contraction in this direction of both the -side and crown sheets of the flrebox, and these inwardly bulged ridges also provide for a certain degree of resilience permitting the expansion of the circulators both transversely of the firebox and vertically thereof to be taken up without unduly stressing the rebox sheet structure.
The number and arrangement of the circulators may vary within the scope of the invention depending upon the specic character of the firebox and the kind of arch desired, and as shown in my previously mentioned application Serial No. 649,836, the side water leg spacesl 22 of the ilrebox may bedivided by vertical baiile members extending downwardly terminating somewhat above the level of the mud ring 26.
While in accordance with the patent statutes, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, itis to be understood that changes and modifications of the structure herein disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims, and it is further to be understood that certain features of the invention may be employed to the exclusion of others.
What I claim is:
l. In a boiler, a flrebox having crown sheet and inner and outer side sheet structure defining side water legs below the level of the crown sheet, said crown and inner sideA sheet structure comprising a plurality of longitudinally spaced inwardly bulged portions extending transversely of the crown sheet and downwardly of the side sheets, said portions being freely flexible longitudinally of the ilrebox to provide for longitudinal expansion and contraction of the crown and inner side sheets vand a plurality of hollow water steaming and circulating members located transversely of .the rebox, each of said mnbers connecting the crown sheet part of one of said irwardly bulged portions withv the side sheet parts of the same inwardly bulged portion at opposite sides of the flrebox.
2. In a boiler, a rebox sheet structure comprising a crown sheet and side sheets. said side sheets having a plurality of inwardly bulged portions freely `flexible longitudinally of the ilrebox and extending in generally vertical direction and spaced longitudinally of theilrebox whereby to permit longitudinal expansion and contraction of the side sheets and a plurality of water steaming and circulating members having hollow lower portions bridging the iirebox between said bulged;l

3. 5. In a boiler, a ilrebox having crown sheet and inner and outer side sheet structure dening sideA Water legs extending below the level of the crown sheet, said inner side sheet structure comprising 35 substantially vertically extending inwardly bulged portions providing for longitudinal expansion and contraction of the side sheets, and a water steaming and circulating member comprising' a lower hollow portion bridging the ilrebox and a hollow 40 portion extending upwardly from the lower portion and communicating with the space above the crown sheet, the ends of said lower portion joining the inner side sheet structure at opposite inwardly bulged portions thereof.

Circulator structure for boiler fireboxes hav-l ing crown and side sheets comprising a generally U-shaped portion having inwardly bulged ridges extending longitudinally of the legs thereof, said ridges being freely flexible laterally thereof, said portion being adapted to be sealed to the edges of an opening extending transversely of the crown sheet and downwardly of the side sheets, and'a hollow portion connecting openings in said ridges with anppening in the part of said U-shaped portion connecting said legs.
