The present invention relates more particularly to a massaging and shampooing device for scalp and facial applications, although it may be utilized for other purposes.
At present, various treatments have been devised by beauty culturists to invigorate the skin or scalp, which comprise, generally, massaging or shampooing. It is customary in administering a treatment to massage the face first and, immediately thereafter, to shampoo or massage the scalp. Preferably, the cosmeticr preparations are heated in a small dish to a suitable temperature to increase the permeability thereof. To facilitate these operations, it has been necessary for the operator to heat each preparation separately prior to the application thereof. Such a procedure requires the person attending the customer to watch the heating operation also. Improper attention, spoiled preparations and loss of time result. Due to the increase in popularity and the decrease in cost of such treatments, the operators must work very rapidly to economize time. Hand applications are not entirely satisfactory to the customer and are very tiring to the person making the application.
The present invention aims to eliminate or minimize the dimculties enumerated above by providing a device adapted to be used as a massaging instrument, which automatically heats the cosmetic preparation during the application, thus eecting a substantial saving in time and maintaining the proper temperaturethroughout the treatment. The invention also provides a plurality of interchangeable members which are adapted to be Used for a variety of treatments.
An object of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive massaging device adapted to heat and dispense cosmetic preparations.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to receive a series of interchangeable attachments for effecting a number of treatments.
Another object of the invention is to minimize the time required and to provide an improved method for giving treatments.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined massaging and shampooing device adapted to heat and dispense asuitable cosmetic preparation.
Other and further objects of the invention will be obvious upon an understanding of the illustrative embodiment about to be described or will be indicated in the appended claims, and various advantages not referred to herein will occur to one skilled in the art upon employment of the invention in practice.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has been chosen for purposes of illustration and description and is shown in the accompanying (Cl. 12S-65) drawing, forming a part of the specification,

The preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a series of interchangeable massaging and shampooing devices secured to a suitable holding member. The holding member 25 is provided with a hollow portion adapted to receive a cosmetic preparation and electrically operated means for heating the preparation. A suitable handle is attached to the holding member to facilitate manipulation thereof. 30
Referring again to the drawing, and more particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown a substantially beu-shaped member l having a hollow portion 2 therein, provided with a threaded portion 4 at the lower edge thereof. The threaded portion 4 is 35 adapted to engage corresponding threads formed in suitable interchangeable massaging members, which will be described hereinafter. The bellshaped holding member l is preferably threaded to a handle or linger hold 3l for manipulating 40 the massaging members, as described hereinafter also.
The massaging members illustrated in the present invention preferably comprise a series of interchangeable members adapted for facial and 45 shampooing treatments. In Fig. l, one form of device is illustrated comprising a circular disc member 5 provided with a flange 6 having suitable threads 1 therein adapted to engage the threads 4 of member l. The disc member prefer- 50 ably has a substantially smooth surface 9, adapted for massaging, and has suitable apertures 3 therein for dispensing a cosmetic preparation. Preferably the member 5 is constructed of a smooth durable material such as 55 aluminum, hard rubber and the like, which may be readily cleaned and sterilized. When employing this device, the massaging medium, preferably a cream lotion or the like, is applied to the face by placing it in the cavity 2, applying heat, 60

and causing the heated cream to ooze through the apertures 3. With preparations such as cold creams, sufficient heat is applied to liquefy them to apply them more effectively. Also, hand application of the cosmetic is eliminated thereby reducing the time required for the treatment.
'I'o effect the heating of the massaging member 5 and the cosmetic preparations which are being applied, a suitable electrical heating coil ft2, herein shown as a pancake coil,`may be attached to the upper interior portion of the member I. Preferably the coil is connected to member 24 which conforms to the contour of the inner shoulder 25 of the holding member I and which may be attached thereto by a suitable adhesive or in any other desirable manner. The member 24 is constructed of suitable insulating material and is provided with a pair of conduits El, adapted to permit the passage of the lead At the upper end of .-lember 24, an electrical connecting device 28 is ovided comprising a circular contact member and an annular band 3| constructed of convuctive material, such as brass or copper, imedded within the member 28, the contact memer 30 being centrally disposed with respect to he annular contact band 3| and insulated therefrom. The leads 29 may be soldered, or otherwise attached, to the disc 3|) and band 3|, respectively.
If desired, the coil may be concealed within the chamber 2 by providing a disc 32, which is adapted to be suitably secured Within a suitable groove 34 formed in the member I. In this manner, a cosmetic placed in the cavity of the member 2 will not cont-aminate the coil. In order to prevent the parts from being overheated, a suitable lining 35, of asbestos or other heat insulating material, may be interposed between the coil and the respective parts, as shown in the drawing. It will of course, be understood that the lining 35 is provided with a pair of apertures to permit the passage of the coil leads 29.
To complete the construction of the .device illustrated in the present invention, a handle 3'| is provided, having a gripping portion and a bent neck portion 39 adapted to be secured to the member I by means of threads 5. A centrally disposed conduit 4I is provided within the handle for electric wires 38, preferably of the flexible lamp cord type, which lead to a suitable source of electric energy. At the end of the neck, the aperture 4I is enlarged to permit a suitable electrical connecting .device 42 to be disposed therein, with contact points 45 andv 4I' preferably formed from spring members adapted to engage the contact members 30 and 3| connected to the heating coil 22.
When the handle 3`| and the holding member I are connected together by means of the threads 49, the contact devices 23 and 42 are resiliently pressed together so that the members 3| and 46 and the members 30 and 41 are pressed together to complete the electrical circuit through the coil. The electric current permitted to pass through the coil may be regulated by a suitable rheostat or switch 48, preferably intermediate the lead wires 38 and the source of energy, to maintain, at proper temperature, the effective part of the massaging device and also the preparation being applied.
In Fig. 6 a` massaging member |4 is shown which may be substituted for the member 5, described above. The massaging medium preferably a cream lotion or the like is applied directly to the face and the disc I4 is utilized for the massaging treatment.
In most instances, after the facial treatment is completed, it is customary to massage the scalp or to shampoo the hair. For this purpose, a member I0, illustrated in Fig. 2, is provided having a threaded portion l' which is adapted to be secured to the threads 4 of the member I. The member Il) is provided with a plurality of bristle-like projections II, preferably arranged in concave relation to facilitate their application to the scalp and having apertures I 2 therein adapted to dispense a fluid which may be heated in chamber 2 during the scalp treatment. The member I0 may be made of aluminum or other suitable material, which facilitates the transfer of heat. However, since the liquid is distributed through the apertures I2 in substantially heated condition, the member I0 also may be made of rubber, bakelite, or the like, if desired.
After giving a shampoo, a tonic is usually applied to the scalp. Such tonics are similar to water or alcohol and are much less viscous than shampoos. In order to permit the shampoo applicator It to be used for tonics, a substantially thin perforated metal disc I9 (Fig. '7) is provided and is adapted to iit within the shampoo applicator and to restrict the flow of liquid therethrough preferably the outer periphery of the disc I9 fits between the end of member I and the J shoulder 53 of member I4. The central portion of member I5 holds the disc I9 against the end of the member I. The disc is preferably made of aluminum and several may be provided with perforations sized for different uses and for different rates of flow.
In operating the device for massaging, the operator applies the attachment 5 to the device or applies a suitable cosmetic upon the part to be massaged, usually the face, and then employs the smooth surface 9 for the massaging. The heat of the coil will cause the surface 9 of the member 5 to be heated slightly, thus facilitating the massagingprocess, sincetheaddition ofheat increases the penetrating power of the cosmetic and also facilitates dispensing it through the apertures 3. When the temperature of the disc is about 115 degrees Fahrenheit, the current may be shut off or diminished by means of a suitable rheostat G9.
As soon as the facial treatment is completed, the
member 5 is removed, a suitable quantity of shampoo or similar scalp application is placed in the chamber, and the member It is attached in its place. The oil is quickly heated and the operator proceeds to massage the scalp with themember I9, having rubber protuberances thereon. The liquid in the chamber 2 will now seep through the apertures I2 and will be deposited upon the scalp during the massaging thereof. The liquid used for this purpose may either be an oil or a liquid shampoo soap, depending upon the desired operation. If the oil iiows too rapidly, the disc I9 may be inserted within member I9, whereby the flow is substantially retarded to facilitate the distribution thereof. Tonics may also be applied to the scalp through the shampooing attachment by utilizing the discs I9 with proper size of perforations to restrict the ow of tonic to the scalp.
Instead of using the member 5 for the facial treatment, the cream may be directly applied to the face. A quantity of cream or oil, to be used for a subsequent treatment may be placed in the chamber 2 of member I and the imperforate member Ill is attached. The cream or oil is then heated to heat the member I4 which is applied to the face for the massaging treatment. The application of head in this manner is very desirable as it increases the permeability of the cosmetic and opens the pores of the skin.
It will be seen that the present invention provides an inexpensive massaging device which is particularly adapted to be used interchangeably for massaging and shampooing operations. A saving of time is effected by heating the massaging or shampooing cosmetic while rendering the treatment. A series of attachments are provided, which may be readily connected to a hollow holding member to facilitate the various steps of the treatments. The attachments being preferably of aluminum or other durable material may be readily washed in hot soap water and thereafter sterilized. rI'he electrical heating means may be accurately controlled so that the temperature of the massaging device remains constant throughout the entire treatment or any part thereof. Furthermore, the temperature may be adjusted to the most comfortable degree of heat the customer desires. The electrical means are w-ell insulated and adequately protected to conserve the heat within the chamber. The coil is separated from the liquid in the chamber to facilitate the cleaning operations. The masaging device is rugged in construction and fully capable of withstanding the rough usage to which it may be subjected.
-As various changes may be made in the form., arrangement and construction of the parts herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and without sacrificing any of its advantages, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a massaging device of the class described, the combination of a handle having a threaded end, a pair of electric contacting members in the end oi said handle having contact faces lying in the same plane, a bell-shaped member having a threaded end to engage the threaded end of said handle, a pair of electric contacts in the threaded end of said bell-shaped member having correspending contact faces adapted to cooperate with the contacts in said handle when said bellshaped member and handle are assembled, a at heating coil secured in said bell-shaped member and operatively connected to the contact members therein, said bell-shaped member having a chamber for the reception of a preparation to be dispensed, the lower end of said bell-shapedmember being threaded to receive an attachment, a disc tting into said recess for separating said coil from the chamber, and an attachment having apertures therein and provided with a threaded skirt portion screwed on the threaded end of said bell-shaped member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a bell-shaped holding member having a downwardly depending wall, a reservoir formed by the downwardly depending wall of said member, said reservoir being adapted to retain a cosmetic, the outer lower part of said wall being threaded to receive a massaging member, insulating material in the upper part of said reservoir, a heating element embedded in said insulating material, a removable disc member adjacent said heating element for separating said heating element from the lower portion of the reservoir, a massaging member having a threaded skirt adapted to be attached to the threaded portion of the reservoir wall, said massaging member having aperturesv thereinfor dispensing the cosmetic, and a handle member detachably connected to said holding member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a bell-shaped holding member, having a downwardly depending wall, a reservoir adapted to retain a cosmetic, said reservoir being formed by the downwardly depending wall of said member, the outer lower part of said wall being threaded to receive a massaging member, insulating material in the upper part of said reservoir, a heating element embedded in said insulating material, a removable disc member adjacent said heating element for separating said heating element from the lower portion of the reservoir, a massaging member having a threaded skirt adapted to be attached to the threaded portion of the reservoir wall, said massaging member having apertures therein for dispensing the cosmetic, a perforated disc mounted adjacent the massaging member to regulate the feed of the cosmetic through the massaging member, and a handle member detachably connected to said holding member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a bell-shaped member having a chamber adapted to retain a cosmetic preparation and a threaded portion at the lower edge, insulating material in the upperpart of said reservoir, a substantially flat coil embedded and concealed in the upper part of said chamber for heating the cosmetic preparation to increase the permeability thereof, and a massaging disc for sealing the chamber within said member, said disc having apertures therein for dispensing the cosmetic preparation from the chamber during application thereof and having a depending skirt provided with a threaded portion for engaging the threads at the lower edge of said member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a member having a chamber therein adapted to retain a cosmetic preparation, concealed heating means in the form of a flat coil 'in the upper portion of the chamber, a massaging lfrom the chamber during the application thereof, and a flow regulating member interposed between said first member and said disc member and secured against said disc member substantially at the outer periphery to regulate the flow of the preparation through said disc member.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle having a nger grip thereon, a member attached to said handle having heating means concealed in the upper part thereof, and a reservoir for cosmetics and the like in the lower part thereof, the outer lower edge of said member being threaded and the lower portion of said member being closed by a massaging attachment threaded to the threaded portion of said member, said massaging member having apertures therein adapted to dispense the cosmetic,v
and a perforated disc member in said reservoir adapted to be secured between said member and said massaging attachment to regulate the flow of cosmetic to the massaging attachment.
