Abstract
Three body sections most commonly used for sleeping on a pillow are neck, skull, and sides of the face and the head. This pillow design provides three sections each supporting the three body parts individually and collectively adapting to the contours and varying dimensions of each part. The curvature of the neck is supported by a circular pillow section while the skull is supported by large mid-section. Each section is optimized to support individual parts of the upper body. Section 1 supports the neck for back sleeping, section 3 supports the side of the face and the head for side sleeping while section 2 supports the skull comfortably. Due to the three-piece construction (primary pillow, skull pillow, and top pillow) of the section pillow system, different filling densities of the primary pillow, skull pillow, and top pillow may be used to provide varying degrees of firmness. The section pillow system in modular-related combination comprises a cervical region support assembly. The cervical region support assembly supports the cervical region and spine alignment for a human user during resting periods. This adjustable section pillow system provides support for the cervical region and spine alignment for a human user during at least one resting period, thereby providing the human with a more comfortable and restful sleep. The pillow design adapts from back sleeping to side sleeping position, by turning the pillow over to the required side. The resilience of the pillow material allows it conform the different curvatures of the neck, skull, head and spine to provide maximum support, individualized to the user. See illustration: Pillow image—FIG. 5. Integral part of this pillow system is the pillow case made from copper infused fabric to provide health benefits by reducing bacteria to reduce allergies and odour.
Description
- The present invention relates to pillow systems, more particularly to a pillow system that provides multiple segments for localized and customized support to the neck, skull, and adjoining parts of the human body. Integral with this pillow system is a copper infused fabric cover that largely eliminates bacteria to reduce allergies and odour.
- A significant number of pillows including standard commercial, contour, and cervical designs do not provide consumers with adequate support for the neck and head. Due to this inadequate neck and head support, muscle aches, stiffness, headaches, and a poor night's sleep may result. Pillow designs that do offer support may not be adjustable and are often only beneficial in certain sleeping positions. If consumers prefer their pillows to be higher, they may stack additional pillows on top of one another. Unfortunately, this stacking arrangement is not stable and is likely to shift around during the night leading to poor sleeping conditions. Ideally, adjustable section pillow systems should be modular, user-friendly and, yet would operate reliably and be manufactured at a modest expense.
- Prior techniques and devices used for the previous scenario, do not effectively provide solutions to this problem, as they consist of insubstantial and vulnerable materials and methods of use, that are susceptible to mechanical and physical inabilities, and limiting device capabilities and capacities. Thus, a need exists for a reliable adjustable section pillow system that can allow comfortable resting of neck, skull and side of head to avoid the above-mentioned problems.
- Added to this sectional pillow is a pillow case made from copper infused fabric. Commonly available pillow cases accumulates oil, dirt, saliva and sweat from daily use resulting in a production of harmful bacteria. Copper infused fabric cover as a part of this pillow system largely eliminated this bacteria to provide health benefits.
- There are other section pillows that have been designed with the ability to provide multiple segments for localized and customized support to the neck, skull, and adjoining parts of the human body. Typical of these are as seen as follows:

No. 10/085,575 B2 discloses a transformable, multi-function, detachable, foldable, two piece pillow which allows for comfortable and ergonomically correct prone, supine and seated use is provided. The two piece design is comprised of an upper wedged contour pillow and a lower horseshoe pillow, which may be used together or separately. The two pillow design allows for both pillows to be used together in different configurations, or separately to provide for comfortable and ergonomically correct prone, supine and seated use.
- U.S. Pat. No. 9,775,452B2 discloses a pillow system which includes a head pillow having a top end, a bottom end, and a connector disposed at the bottom end. A leg pillow has a top end, a bottom end, and sides extending between the top end and the bottom end. The leg pillow also includes a top connector at the top end, and a side connector at one of the sides. The connector of the head pillow is configured to be coupled to the top connector of the leg pillow. The pillow system also includes a torso pillow having a top end, a bottom end and two sides, and a connector disposed at one of the sides. The connector of the torso pillow is configured to be coupled to the side connector of the leg pillow.
- U.S. Ser. No. 10/813,821B2 The present invention provides devices for neck support and correction, for example, pillows, headrests, or cushions, designed to be placed under the head and neck of a person lying in a supine or side-lying position, such devices are useful for maintaining or improving cervical and/or thoracic spinal curvature and/or alignment and for reducing pain associated with ailments of the neck or cervical vertebrae. Also provided are methods of improving cervical spinal alignment and for treating or ameliorating ailments of the neck or cervical vertebrae.

- Referring now to
FIG. 1 showing perspective views of adjustable section pillow system according to an embodiment of the present invention. As shown inFIG. 1 , adjustable section pillow system provides support for a cervical region and spine alignment for human-user during at least one resting period thereby providing human-user with a more comfortable and restful night's sleep. Adjustable section pillow system preferably is adjustably placed with primary pillow as shown inFIG. 1 . As shown inFIGS. 2, 3, and 4 , the present invention, as used according to method of use (mentioned subsequently) serves to promote natural curvature and alignment in a comfortable position while human-user is resting as shown inFIGS. 3 and 4 . - In human anatomy, vertebral column (cervical region and thoracic region) is a column usually consisting of 24 articulating vertebrae, and 9 fused vertebrae in the sacrum and the coccyx. Vertebral column is preferably situated in the dorsal aspect of the torso, separated by intervertebral discs and vertebral column houses and protects the spinal cord in its spinal canal. There are normally thirty-three (33) vertebrae in human-user, including the five that are fused to form the sacrum (the others are separated by intervertebral discs) and the four coccygeal bones that form the tailbone.
- The upper three regions comprise the remaining 24 and are grouped under the names cervical region (7 vertebrae), thoracic region (12 vertebrae) and lumbar region (5 vertebrae), according to the regions they occupy. This number is sometimes increased by an additional vertebra in one region, or it may be diminished in one region, the deficiency often being supplied by an additional vertebra in another. The number of cervical vertebrae is, however, very rarely increased or diminishes.
- There are seven (7) cervical bones (but 8 cervical spinal nerves) that make up cervical region and these bones are, in general, small and delicate. Their spinous processes are short (with the exception of C2 and C7, which have palpable spinous processes). Numbered top-to-bottom from C1-C7, atlas (C1) and axis (C2), are the vertebrae that allow the neck and head so much movement. For the most part, the atlanto-occipital joint allows the skull to move up and down, while the atlanto-axial joint allows the upper neck to twist left and right. The axis also sits upon the first intervertebral disk of the spinal column.
- The twelve thoracic bones that make up thoracic region and their transverse processes have surfaces that articulate with the ribs. Some rotation can occur between the thoracic vertebrae, but their connection with the rib cage prevents much flexion or other excursion. They may also be known as ‘dorsal vertebrae’, in the human context. It is ideal that these bones would be aligned during non-rest and rest periods. The present invention because of its modular construct and assembly is able to provide user-preferred fit customized to the individual user to promote spine alignment and health and minimize misalignment and resulting discomfort(s). Adjustable section pillow system is able to be rigidly secured as a modular assembly such that spine maintains its normal preferred position and doesn't move in relation to adjustable section pillow system (as traditional pillows move in relation to each other and to human-user. These features provide that the proper cervical curve be maintained.
- Consumers of various ages with different neck, head and shoulder dimensions can minimize the risk of developing neck, cervical and adjoining body pain problems experienced with other pillows, due to the benefits of using adjustable section pillow system.
FIGS. 3 and 4 shows relative proportions and alignment of human-user in relation to adjustable section pillow system (in-use.) Further, adjustable section pillow system permits human-user to customize their pillow arrangement due to the ability to change and rearrange a height and relative position of adjustable section pillow system at virtually any time as discussed below. - The term “method” means any process, method or the like, unless expressly specified otherwise.

- A reference to “another embodiment” or “another aspect” in describing an embodiment does not imply that the referenced embodiment is mutually exclusive with another embodiment (e.g., an embodiment described before the referenced embodiment), unless expressly specified otherwise.
- The terms “including”, “comprising” and variations thereof mean “including but not limited to”, unless expressly specified otherwise.
- The terms “a”, “an” and “the” mean “one or more”, unless expressly specified otherwise.
- The term “herein” means “in the present application, including anything which may be incorporated by reference”, unless expressly specified otherwise.
- The phrase “at least one of”, when such phrase modifies a plurality of things (such as an enumerated list of things) means any combination of one or more of those things, unless expressly specified otherwise. For example, the phrase “at least one of a widget, a car and a wheel” means either (i) a widget, (ii) a car, (iii) a wheel, (iv) a widget and a car, (v) a widget and a wheel, (vi) a car and a wheel, or (vii) a widget, a car and a wheel. The phrase “at least one of”, when such phrase modifies a plurality of things does not mean “one of each of” the plurality of things.
- Numerical terms such as “one”, “two”, etc. when used as cardinal numbers to indicate quantity of something (e.g., one widget, two widgets), mean the quantity indicated by that numerical term, but do not mean at least the quantity indicated by that numerical term. For example, the phrase “one widget” does not mean “at least one widget”, and therefore the phrase “one widget” does not cover, e.g., two widgets.
- The phrase “based on” does not mean “based only on”, unless expressly specified otherwise. In other words, the phrase “based on” describes both “based only on” and “based at least on”. The phrase “based at least on” is equivalent to the phrase “based at least in part on”.
- The term “represent” and like terms are not exclusive, unless expressly specified otherwise. For example, the term “represents” do not mean “represents only”, unless expressly specified otherwise. In other words, the phrase “the data represents a credit card number” describes both “the data represents only a credit card number” and “the data represents a credit card number and the data also represents something else”.
- The term “e.g.” and like terms mean “for example”, and thus does not limit the term or phrase it explains.
- The term “respective” and like terms mean “taken individually”. Thus if two or more things have “respective” characteristics, then each such thing has its own characteristic, and these characteristics can be different from each other but need not be. For example, the phrase “each of two machines has a respective function” means that the first such machine has a function and the second such machine has a function as well. The function of the first machine may or may not be the same as the function of the second machine.
- The term “i.e.” and like terms mean “that is”, and thus limits the term or phrase it explains. For example, in the sentence “the computer sends data (i.e., instructions) over the Internet”, the term “i.e.” explains that “instructions” are the “data” that the computer sends over the Internet.
- Any given numerical range shall include whole and fractions of numbers within the range. For example, the range “1 to 10” shall be interpreted to specifically include whole numbers between 1 and 10 (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, . . . 9) and non-whole numbers (e.g. 1.1, 1.2, . . . 1.9).
- Where two or more terms or phrases are synonymous (e.g., because of an explicit statement that the terms or phrases are synonymous), instances of one such term/phrase does not mean instances of another such term/phrase must have a different meaning. For example, where a statement renders the meaning of “including” to be synonymous with “including but not limited to”, the mere usage of the phrase “including but not limited to” does not mean that the term “including” means something other than “including but not limited to”.
- Neither the Title (set forth at the beginning of the first page of the present application) nor the Abstract (set forth at the end of the present application) is to be taken as limiting in any way as the scope of the disclosed invention(s). An Abstract has been included in this application merely because an Abstract of not more than 150 words is required under 37 C.F.R. .sctn.1.72(b).
