Abstract

The present invention relates to an oscillating roofing knife blade device. The device has two primary embodiments, a fixed embodiment, and a removable embodiment. In the fixed embodiment, the device has a body, further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member and a blade tip. Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
  • The present application claims priority to, and the benefit of, U.S. Provisional Application No. 63/223,218, which was filed on Jul. 19, 2021, and is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
  • FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates generally to the field of oscillating blades. More specifically, the present invention relates to an oscillating roofing knife blade device. The device has two primary embodiments, a fixed embodiment, and a removable embodiment. In the fixed embodiment, the device has a body further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member and a blade tip. In a removable embodiment, the device has an oscillating blade attachment member and at least one blade that attaches to the member via at least one fastener. Further, the blade is attached to the oscillating blade attachment member by aligning and placing fasteners through at least one cutout on the body of the blade, with the openings on the device attachment member of the oscillating blade attachment member. The oscillating roofing knife blade device enables users to attach a roofing knife attachment to a handheld power tool that allows a user to cut through tough materials more efficiently and easily like shingles, carpet, plastics, etc. The device is configured to allow a user to change blades quickly and conveniently for an array of purposes. Accordingly, the present disclosure makes specific reference thereto. Nonetheless, it is to be appreciated that aspects of the present invention are also equally applicable to other like applications, devices, and methods of manufacture.
  • BACKGROUND
  • By way of background, roofers and other individuals are often required to cut through tough materials such as shingles, plastics, carpet, etc. This cutting is typically done with a manual roofing knife. However, said materials can be especially difficult to cut with a manual roofing knife, especially during extreme weather conditions or while physically exhausted. Using a manual roofing knife involves extensive amounts of physical labor and using said knife wastes large amounts of time.
  • Therefore, there exists a long-felt need in the art for a device that can be used to cut roofing materials such as shingles and plastics more easily. There also exists a long-felt need in the art for an attachment made for a handheld power tool that is used in cutting these tougher materials. There also exists a long-felt need in the art for an improved knife design that allows for quicker blade changes and attachment to a handheld power tool.
  • The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one embodiment thereof, comprises an oscillating roofing knife blade device. The device has two primary embodiments, a fixed embodiment and a removable embodiment. In the fixed embodiment, the device has a body, further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member and a blade tip. In a removable embodiment, the device has an oscillating blade attachment member and at least one blade that attaches to the member via at least one fastener. The device can be easily attached to an oscillating saw or other tool of the like that does not require manually powered cutting.
  • In this manner, the oscillating roofing knife blade device of the present invention accomplishes all of the foregoing objectives and provides users with a device that enables users to attach a roofing knife attachment to a handheld power tool that allows a user to more efficiently and easily cut through tough materials like shingles, carpets, plastics, etc. The devise is configured to allow a user to change blades quickly and conveniently for an array of purposes.
  • SUMMARY
  • The following presents a simplified summary in order to provide a basic understanding of some aspects of the disclosed innovation. This summary is not an extensive overview, and it is not intended to identify key/critical elements or to delineate the scope thereof. Its sole purpose is to present some general concepts in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.
  • The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one embodiment thereof, comprises an oscillating roofing knife blade device. The device has two primary embodiments, a fixed embodiment, and a removable embodiment. In the fixed embodiment, the device has a body, further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member and a blade tip. In a removable embodiment, the device has an oscillating blade attachment member and at least one blade that attaches to the member via at least one fastener. Further, the blade is attached to the oscillating blade attachment member by aligning and placing fasteners through at least one cutout on the body of the blade with the openings on the device attachment member of the oscillating blade attachment member.
  • Accordingly, the oscillating roofing knife blade device of the present invention is particularly advantageous as it presents a user with the ability to conveniently cut through tough materials that otherwise would be physically exhausting and time consuming. The device allows a user to cut through roof shingles, carpets, plastics and much more by using a handheld power tool such as, but not limited to, an oscillating saw instead of a manual roofing knife. In this manner, the oscillating roofing knife blade device overcomes the limitations of existing manual roofing knife blades known in the art.
  • Numerous benefits and advantages of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which it pertains, upon reading and understanding the following detailed specification.
  • To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, certain illustrative aspects of the disclosed innovation are described herein in connection with the following description and the annexed drawings. These aspects are indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principles disclosed herein can be employed and are intended to include all such aspects and their equivalents. Other advantages and novel features will become apparent from the following detailed description when considered in conjunction with the drawings.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • The innovation is now described with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding thereof. It may be evident, however, that the innovation can be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to facilitate a description thereof. Various embodiments are discussed hereinafter. It should be noted that the figures are described only to facilitate the description of the embodiments. They are not intended as an exhaustive description of the invention and do not limit the scope of the invention. Additionally, an illustrated embodiment need not have all the aspects or advantages shown. Thus, in other embodiments, any of the features described herein from different embodiments may be combined.
  • As noted above, there exists a long-felt need in the art for a device that can be used to cut roofing materials such as shingles and plastics more easily. There also exists a long-felt need in the art for an attachment made for a handheld power tool that is used in cutting tougher materials. There also exists a long-felt need in the art for an improved knife design that allows for quicker blade change on the handheld power tools.
  • The present invention, in one exemplary embodiment, is comprised of an oscillating roofing knife blade device. The device has two primary embodiments, a fixed embodiment, and a removable embodiment. In the fixed embodiment, the device has a body further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member and a blade tip. In a removable embodiment, the device has an oscillating blade attachment member and at least one blade that attaches to the member via at least one fastener through at least one opening/cutout. The method includes the steps of attaching the blade onto the oscillating blade attachment member in the removable embodiment. Further, the method comprises the steps for removing and replacing a broken/dull blade from the oscillating blade attachment member.
  • Referring initially to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates a side view of one potential fixed embodiment 200 of the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100. In the fixed embodiment 200, the device 100 has a body 210, further comprised of an oscillating blade attachment member 222 and a blade 232 that has a blade tip 234. In the preferred fixed embodiment 200, the device 100 is one continuous piece of non-corrosive metal wherein the first end 220 and the second end 230 have no gaps or breaks. In the preferred embodiment, the device 100 may also be made from a plurality of metals such as, but not limited to: aluminum, stainless steel, chrome vanadium steel, aluminum oxide, etc. Further, the oscillating blade attachment member 222 allows the device 100 to attach to an oscillating saw or other similar reciprocating power tool of the like.
  • The second end 230 of the body 110 is further comprised of a blade 232 and a blade tip 234. In the preferred embodiment, the blade 232 and the blade tip 234 are made from the same metal material as the oscillating blade attachment member 222. The blade tip 234 is preferably curved and sharpened to allow the user to cut through desired materials such as, but not limited to, shingles. In varying embodiments, the blade tip 234 may be any shape and/or curve that one skilled in the art would use to accomplish various roofing (or other) related tasks.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a side view of one potential removable embodiment 300 of an oscillating roofing knife blade device 100. In one embodiment, the device attachment member 310 and blade body 400 are made from the same non-corrosive metal material such as, but not limited to: aluminum, stainless steel, chrome vanadium steel, aluminum oxide, etc. In another embodiment, the device attachment member 310 and blade body 400 may be made from different metal materials. Further, the oscillating blade attachment member 314 of the first end 312 of the device attachment member 310 allows the device 100 to attach to an oscillating or any other reciprocating handheld power tool 10 that one skilled in the art may use to accomplish their tasks.
  • The blade body 400 is further comprised of a blade 410, a blade tip 430, and at least one cutout 420. The blade tip 430 is preferably curved and sharpened to allow the user to cut through the desired materials such as, but not limited to, shingles. In varying embodiments, the blade tip 430 may be any shape that is known to one skilled in the art that may be used to accomplish their tasks.
  • The second end 316 of the device attachment member 310 and the blade body 400 may be secured to one another by aligning the openings 318 on the device attachment member 310 with the cutouts 420 on the blade body 400. Further, at least one fastener 500 is used to secure the blade body 400 to the device attachment member 310 through the openings 318 and the cutouts 420. Said fastener 500 may be any fastener known in the art such as, but not limited to: bolt and nut assembly, screw, etc.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates a side view of one potential removable embodiment 300 of an oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 with fasteners 500. In the preferred removable embodiment 300, the device attachment member 310 and the blade body 400 are attached via fasteners 500, as noted above. The cutouts 420 on the blade body 400 are aligned with the openings 318 on the device attachment member. The fasteners 500 are placed through the cutouts 420 and the openings 318 to allow for an easy, and convenient attachment of the blade body 400 to the oscillating blade attachment member 314.
  • FIG. 4 illustrates a bottom view of one potential removable embodiment 300 of an oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 with fasteners 500. In the preferred embodiment, the fasteners 500 are comprised of a nut 510 and a washer 520. In varying embodiments, the fasteners 500 used may be any fastener 500 known to one skilled in the art. The removable embodiment 300 allows a user to attach the first end 312 via the oscillating blade attachment member 314 to the handheld power tool. Then when the blade tip 430 gets dull or breaks, the user can easily replace the blade 410 by undoing the fasteners 500. In this manner, the user is not required to purchase an entirely new device 100.
  • One embodiment of the device 100 as shown in FIG. 6 may be comprised of at least one blade housing 700 that houses at least one removable blade 730. The blade 730 is preferably any roofing blade or cutting blade known in the art. The blade 730 may also resemble the blade 232 and blade tip 234. The blade 730 can be secured to the second end 230 via the housing 700, which is preferably fixedly attached to the second end 230. The housing 700 preferably contacts at least one side of the blade 730, but preferably encloses at least three sides of the blade 730. In one embodiment, the housing 700 has at least one cover 720 with at least one hinge 710. The cover 720 can be moved over the blade 730 such that the blade 730 is secured between the housing 700 and the cover 720. To replace the blade 730, a user can simply slide the cover 720 away from the blade 730 via the hinge 710, remove the old blade 730, place a new blade in the housing 700, and close the cover 720. In one embodiment, the cover 720 may further be comprised of at least one lock 722 of any lock type known in the art that locks the cover 720 in place on the housing 700.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of one potential method 600 of using one potential embodiment 300 of the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 of the present invention in accordance with the disclosed architecture. First, the user takes the blade body 400 and aligns the cutouts 420 on the blade body 400 with the openings 318 on the device attachment member 310 [Step 602]. Next, the user places the fastener 500 with a washer 520 into the aligned cutouts 420 and openings 318 [Step 604]. Then, the user screws a nut 510 tightly onto the fastener 500 to secure the blade body 400 to the device attachment member 310 [Step 606]. Finally, the oscillating blade attachment member 314 can be inserted into an oscillating saw or other similar handheld power tool of the like to allow the device 100 to be moved in a reciprocating manner to easily cut [Step 608].
  • Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims to refer to particular features or components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, different persons may refer to the same feature or component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components or features that differ in name but not structure or function. As used herein “oscillating roofing knife blade device” and “device” are interchangeable and refer to the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 of the present invention.
  • Notwithstanding the foregoing, the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 of the present invention and its various components can be of any suitable size and configuration as is known in the art without affecting the overall concept of the invention, provided that they accomplish the above-stated objectives. One of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that the size, configuration, and material of the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 as shown in the FIGS. are for illustrative purposes only, and that many other sizes and shapes of the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 are well within the scope of the present disclosure. Although the dimensions of the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 are important design parameters for user convenience, the oscillating roofing knife blade device 100 may be of any size, shape and/or configuration that ensures optimal performance during use and/or that suits the user's needs and/or preferences.
  • Various modifications and additions can be made to the exemplary embodiments discussed without departing from the scope of the present invention. While the embodiments described above refer to particular features, the scope of this invention also includes embodiments having different combinations of features and embodiments that do not include all of the described features. Accordingly, the scope of the present invention is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications, and variations as fall within the scope of the claims, together with all equivalents thereof.
  • What has been described above includes examples of the claimed subject matter. It is, of course, not possible to describe every conceivable combination of components or methodologies for purposes of describing the claimed subject matter, but one of ordinary skill in the art may recognize that many further combinations and permutations of the claimed subject matter are possible. Accordingly, the claimed subject matter is intended to embrace all such alterations, modifications and variations that fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims. Furthermore, to the extent that the term “includes” is used in either the detailed description or the claims, such term is intended to be inclusive in a manner similar to the term “comprising” as “comprising” is interpreted when employed as a transitional word in a claim.

Claims (20)

What is claimed is:
1. An oscillating roofing knife blade device comprising:
a body;
oscillating blade attachment member; and
a blade having a blade tip.
2. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 1, wherein the blade tip is curved.
3. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 1, wherein the oscillating roofing knife blade device is manufactured from a metal material.
4. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 3, wherein the metal material is non-corrosive.
5. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 1, wherein the body is continuous.
6. An oscillating roofing knife blade device comprising:
a device attachment member comprised of a first end and a second end;
a blade body comprised of a blade tip and a cut out; and
a fastener.
7. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 6, wherein the blade tip is curved.
8. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 6, wherein the oscillating roofing knife blade device is manufactured from a metal material.
9. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 8, wherein the metal material is non-corrosive.
10. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 6, wherein the device attachment member is further comprised of an opening.
11. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 10, wherein the cut out of the blade body aligns with the opening.
12. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 11, wherein the fastener can be placed through each of the cut out and the opening.
13. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 12, wherein the fastener secures the device attachment member to the blade body.
14. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 13, wherein the fastener is a bolt.
15. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 14, wherein the fastener is further comprised of a nut and a washer.
16. The oscillating roofing knife blade device of claim 6, wherein the device attachment member is separable from the blade body.
17. A method of using an oscillating roofing knife blade device, the method comprising the steps of:
aligning a cut-out on a blade body of the oscillating roofing knife blade device with an opening on a device attachment member of the oscillating roofing knife blade device;
placing a fastener with a washer into the cut-out and the opening;
screwing a nut onto the fastener; and
inserting an oscillating blade attachment member of the oscillating roofing knife blade device into a handheld power tool.
18. The method of 17, wherein the handheld power tool is an oscillating saw.
19. The method of 17, wherein the fastener is a bolt.
20. The method of 19, wherein the fastener secures the blade body to the device attachment member.
