Abstract
A container for the packaging and displaying of articles including a bottom panel defining a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and including at least four obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter the bottom panel, a front panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel, a top panel including at least four obtuse angles defined by the perimeter of the top panel attached to a front edge of the front panel, a first side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the bottom panel, a second side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the bottom panel, a third side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the top panel, a fourth side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the top panel, wherein each side panel includes at least four sections hingedly connected to one another along the longitudinal axis.
Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/944,175 filed Dec. 5, 2019. The disclosure of which is herein incorporated by reference in its entirety.
- The present disclosure relates to a carton, and more particularly to a non-rectangular carton for transporting or displaying products.
- The present disclosure relates to shipping containers, in particular shipping containers that are fabricated at least in part from paper, paperboard and/or corrugated paperboard material. The present disclosure also relates to such containers that are: 1) erected as a wraparound sheet around the group of products being packaged, with the group of products being placed on the blank forming the wrapper before articulation has begun, or at least well before articulation of the container has been completed; or 2) erected as a tray, wherein the flat blank is formed into a tray container having the minor flaps adhered to the side panels.
- The conventional methods and systems have generally been considered satisfactory for their intended purpose. However, there is still a need in the art for a carton having improved structural integrity and stacking performance. There also remains a need in the art for such containers that are economically viable. The present disclosure may provide a solution for at least one of these remaining challenges.
- A container and carton blank for the packaging and displaying of articles includes an interior space defined by a folded carton, wherein the carton blank includes a bottom panel defining a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and including at least four obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof, a front panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel, a top panel including at least four obtuse angles attached to a front edge of the front panel, a first side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the bottom panel, a second side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the bottom panel, a third side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the top panel, a fourth side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the top panel, wherein each side panel includes at least four sections attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis, a first cutout within the carton defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the first side panel, and edges of the third side panel, and a second cutout defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the second side panel, and edges of the fourth side panel.
- The bottom panel can be elongated along the transverse axis. Each of the bottom panel and top panels can include eight obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof. The first side panel and the second side panel can each include five distinct sections, wherein the five distinct sections of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space.
- A rear panel can be hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel, a retention flap hingedly attached to a rear edge of the rear panel, and a front end panel can be hingedly attached to a front edge of the top panel, wherein a combination of widths of the front end panel and the rear panel can be less than a width of the front panel.
- A retention flap can be hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel and a rear panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the top panel. The third side panel can at least partially cover a portion of the first side panel, and the fourth side panel can at least partially cover a portion of the second side panel.
- The top panel can include a tear-away section, wherein the tear-away section includes a portion of a panel adjacent to the top panel. An intermediate section of each of the side panel can extend greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section of each corresponding side panel.
- These and other features of the systems and methods of the subject disclosure will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments taken in conjunction with the drawings.

The firstrear flap 260 is larger than the secondrear flap 262. The secondrear flap 262 is folded over the firstrear flap 260 in an overlay position when erected and adhered to it. When erectedrear flap 260 is sandwiched between and adhered to four endingsections second side panels 227 and ending sections 233 e, 234 e of the third 233 and fourth 234 side panel. Ending panel 233 e and 234 e are folded and located inside ofend panel 260 andend section rear flap 260.Rear panel 262 is attached to the outside ofrear panel 260. TheFront Panel 224 is also sandwiched between endingsections 233 a/ 234 a and 223 e/ 227 e similar to the way the firstrear flap 260 is sandwiched between ending sections 233 e/ 234 e and 223 a/ 227 a. -

When thetop panel 406 and first 423 and second 427 side panels are folded down,sections rear panel 460 and adhered to it. Likewiserear panel 462 is folded to the outside ofrear panel 460 and adhered to it. Similarly sections 423 d and 427 d are wrapped around the outside offront panel 424 and adhered to it. The resultingcontainer 400 includes a hexagonal footprint as show in inFIG. 4 b. -
FIG. 4 c further showstrapezoidal cutouts 436 and 437. Thebottom panel 428 andbottom panels 406 are elongated along thetransverse axis 409. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (423, 427, 433, 434), and the length of thetop panel 406 and thebottom panel 428 along thelongitudinal axis 408 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 408 than the length of each side panel in entirety.Cutout 473 is intended to create a space for a nozzle or spout to be introduced in the resulting space when removed. -

FIG. 5 c further shows a firstrear flap 560 hingedly attached to afront edge 561 of the top panel and a secondrear flap 562 hingedly attached to a front edge 563 of the firstrear flap 560 panel.Sections 533 e and 534 e are folded to the inside of the rear 560 panel and are adhered to it.Sections 533 d and 534 d, according toFIG. 5 c, fold to the inside offront panel 524 and are adhered to it.Sections 523 d and 527 d are folded to the outside of thefront panel 524 and adhered to it, there by sandwiching thefront panel 524 betweensections 523 d and 527 d to the outside andsections 533 d and 534 d to the inside. -
FIG. 5 c further showscutouts bottom panel 528 andtop panels 506 are elongated along thetransverse axis 509. The intermediate sections (b) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (523, 527, 533, 534) and the length of thetop panel 506 and thebottom panel 528 along thelongitudinal axis 508 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 508 than the length of each side panel in entirety. Thecontainer 500 includes a tear awaysection 550. The tear awaysection 550 can be located on thetop panel 506 and a portion of thefront panel 524. The tear awaysection 550 includes atriangular portion 540 located on thefront panel 524. The angles (580/582, 584/586, 588/590, 594/596) align with the triangular portion located on thefront panel 524 in order to not have portions of the side panels protruding into a cutout created by the tear awaysection 550. -
FIG. 6 a shows acontainer 600 for the packaging and displaying of articles.FIG. 6 b shows thecarton container 600 open showing aninterior space 602 defined by a folded carton blank 604.FIG. 6 c shows the carton blank 604 having atop panel 606 defining alongitudinal axis 608 and atransverse axis 609 and includes four obtuse angles (622 a 2, 622 a 3, 622 a 4, 622 a 5) defined by aninner perimeter 622 thereof. Afront panel 624 is hingedly attached to afront edge 626 of thetop panel 606. Abottom panel 628 which includes four obtuse angles (622b 2, 622 b 3, 622 b 4, 622 b 5) is attached to afront edge 638 of thefront panel 624. Eachside panel longitudinal axis 608. The fourdistinct sections 623 a-623 d, 627 a-627 d, 633 a-633 d, 634 a-634 d of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space and two right angles. -
FIG. 6 c further shows a firstrear flap 660 hingedly attached to afront edge 670 of the bottom panel and a secondrear flap 662 hingedly attached to afront edge 663 of the firstrear flap 660. Ending sections 633 d and 634 d are folded to the inside of firstrear flap 660 and adhered to it.Sections rear flap 660 and are adhered to it.Rear flap 662 is folded to the inside oftop panel 606. When first andsecond side panels side panels front panel 624 and are adhered to it. The resultingcontainer 600 is hexagonal, with the secondrear flap 662 within theinterior space 602. -
FIG. 6 c further showstrapezoidal cutouts bottom panel 628 andtop panel 606 are elongated along thetransverse axis 609. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (623, 627, 633, 634), and the length of thetop panel 606 and thebottom panel 628 along thelongitudinal axis 608 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 608 than the length of each side panel in entirety. -
FIG. 7 a shows acontainer 700 for the packaging and displaying of articles.FIG. 7 b shows thecarton container 700 open showing aninterior space 702 defined by a folded carton blank 704.FIG. 7 c shows the carton blank 704 having atop panel 706 defining alongitudinal axis 708 and atransverse axis 709 and includes four obtuse angles (722 a 2, 722 a 3, 722 a 4, 722 a 5) defined by an inner perimeter 722 thereof. Afront panel 724 is hingedly attached to a front edge 726 of thetop panel 706. Abottom panel 728 which includes four obtuse angles (722b 2, 722 b 3, 722 b 4, 722 b 5) is attached to afront edge 730 of thefront panel 724. Afirst side panel 723 is hingedly attached to a top edge 725 of thetop panel 706; asecond side 727 panel is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 729 of thetop panel 706; athird side panel 733 is hingedly attached to a top edge 732 of thebottom panel 728; and afourth side panel 734 is hingedly attached to abottom edge 736 of thebottom panel 728. Eachside panel longitudinal axis 708. The fourdistinct sections 723 a-723 d, 727 a-727 d, 733 a-733 d, 734 a-734 d of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space and two right angles. -
FIG. 7 c further shows a firstrear flap 760 hingedly attached to afront edge 770 of thebottom panel 728 and a secondrear flap 762 hingedly attached to arear edge 763 of thetop panel 706. Sections 733 d and 734 d are folded to sit inside of the 760 rear panel. When thetop panel 706 is folded horizontally,panel 762 is folded to the outside ofrear panel 760 and adhered to it. The resultingcontainer 700 includes a hexagonal footprint as shown in inFIG. 7 b. -
FIG. 7 c further showstrapezoidal cutouts bottom panel 728 andbottom panels 706 are elongated along thetransverse axis 709. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (723, 727, 733, 734), and the length of thetop panel 706 and thebottom panel 728 along thelongitudinal axis 708 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 708 than the length of each side panel in entirety. -
FIG. 8 a shows acontainer 800 for the packaging and displaying of articles.FIG. 8 b shows thecarton container 800 open showing aninterior space 802 defined by a folded carton blank 804.FIG. 8 c shows the carton blank 804 having atop panel 806 defining alongitudinal axis 808 and atransverse axis 809 and includes eight obtuse angles (822 a 2, 822 a 3, 822 a 4, 822 a 5, 822 a 6, 822 a 7, 822 a 8, 822 a 9) defined by an inner perimeter 822 thereof. Afront panel 824 is hingedly attached to a front edge 826 of thetop panel 806. Abottom panel 828 which includes eight obtuse angles (822b 2, 822 b 3, 822 b 4, 822 b 5, 822 b 6, 822b 7, 822 b 8, 822 b 9) is attached to afront edge 830 of thefront panel 824. Theside panels longitudinal axis 808. Theside panels longitudinal axis 808. -
FIG. 8 c further shows a firstrear flap 860 hingedly attached to afront edge 861 of the bottom 828 panel and a secondrear flap 862 hingedly attached to arear edge 863 of thetop panel 806. Endingsections rear flaps front panel 824 and are adhered to it. Endingsections 823 d and 827 d, when folded are attached to the outside offront panel 824 and are adhered to it. The resultingcontainer 800 includes an octagonal footprint as shown in inFIG. 8 b. -
FIG. 8 c further showstrapezoidal cutouts bottom panel 828 andtop panel 806 are elongated along thetransverse axis 809. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (823, 827, 833, 834), and the length of thetop panel 806 and thebottom panel 828 along thelongitudinal axis 808 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 808 than the length of each side panel in entirety.FIG. 8 c shows thecontainer 800 having a tear-awaysection 850. The tear-awaysection 850 is located on thetop panel 806, and also include eight obtuse angles and include a portion of the secondrear flap 862. -
FIG. 9 a shows acontainer 900 for the packaging and displaying of articles.FIG. 9 b shows thecarton container 900 open showing aninterior space 902 defined by a folded carton blank 904.FIG. 9 c shows the carton blank 904 having atop panel 906 defining alongitudinal axis 908 and atransverse axis 909 and includes eight obtuse angles defined by aninner perimeter 922 thereof. Afront panel 924 is hingedly attached to afront edge 926 of thetop panel 906. Abottom panel 928 which includes eight obtuse angles is attached to afront edge 930 of thefront panel 924. Theside panels longitudinal axis 908. Theside panels longitudinal axis 908. -
FIG. 9 c further shows a firstrear flap 960 hingedly attached to afront edge 961 of the top panel and a secondrear flap 962 hingedly attached to arear edge 963 of the bottom panel. Ending sections 933 e and 934 e are folded to sit inside of and adhered torear flap 960.End sections front panel 924 and are adhered to it. Ending sections 923 d and 927 d, when folded are attached to the outside offront panel 924 and are adhered to it. Whentop panel 906 is folded to a horizontal plane,rear panel 962 is fold to the outside ofrear panel 960 and adhered to it. -
FIG. 9 c further showstrapezoidal cutouts bottom panel 928 andtop panels 906 are elongated along thetransverse axis 909. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (923, 927, 933, 934), and the length of thetop panel 906 and thebottom panel 928 along thelongitudinal axis 908 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along thelongitudinal axis 908 than the length of each side panel in entirety. - The methods and systems of the present disclosure, as described above and shown in the drawings, provide for a carton with superior stacking and footprint, by offering more vertical corner structures. While the apparatus of the subject disclosure has been showing and described with reference to embodiments, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that changes and/or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and score of the subject disclosure.
Claims (17)
1. A container for the packaging and displaying of articles comprising:
an interior space defined by a folded carton, wherein the carton blank includes:
a bottom panel defining a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and including at least four obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter the bottom panel;
a front panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel;
a top panel including at least four obtuse angles defined by the perimeter of the top panel attached to a front edge of the front panel;
a first side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the bottom panel;
a second side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the bottom panel;
a third side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the top panel;
a fourth side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the top panel, wherein each side panel includes at least four sections hingedly connected to one another along the longitudinal axis;
a first cutout within the carton defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the first side panel, and edges of the third side panel; and
a second cutout defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the second side panel, and edges of the fourth side panel.
2. The container of claim 1 , wherein the bottom panel is elongated along the transverse axis.
3. The container of claim 1 , wherein each of the bottom panel and top panels include eight obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof.
4. The container of claim 1 , wherein the first side panel and the second side panel each include five distinct sections.
5. The container of claim 4 , wherein the five distinct sections of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space.
6. The container of claim 1 , further comprising a first rear panel hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel.
7. The container of claim 6 , further comprising a second rear panel hingedly attached to a rear edge of the first rear panel.
8. The container of claim 6 , further comprising a second rear panel hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel.
9. The container of claim 1 , further comprising a rear panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the top panel.
10. The container of claim 1 , wherein each of the cutouts defines a non-trapezoidal shape.
11. The container of claim 1 , wherein the third side panel at least partially covers a portion of the first side panel, and the fourth side panel at least partially covers a portion of the second side panel.
12. The container of claim 1 , wherein the top panel includes a tear-away section.
13. The container of claim 12 , wherein the tear-away section includes a portion of a panel adjacent to the top panel.
14. The container of claim 12 , wherein the tear-away section includes a portion of first rear panel.
15. The container of claim 1 , wherein an intermediate section of each of the side panel extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section of each corresponding side panel.
16. The container of claim 1 , wherein an outer section of each side panel includes two obtuse angles formed by an inner perimeter thereof.
17. A cardboard blank configured to define an interior space when folded for packaging and displaying of articles comprising:
a bottom panel defining a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and including at least four obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof;
a front panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel;
a top panel including at least four obtuse angles attached to a front edge of the front panel;
a first side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the bottom panel;
a second side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the bottom panel;
a third side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the top panel;
a fourth side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the top panel, wherein each side panel includes at least four sections attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis;
a first cutout within the carton defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the first side panel, and edges of the third side panel; and
a second cutout defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the second side panel, and edges of the fourth side panel.
