FIG. 21 is perspective view of the pivot arm for the embodiment shown inFIG. 19 . - Referring now to the drawings generally and specifically to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , shown is one embodiment of themodular handguard 10 of the present invention. Handguard 10 includes three primary components, abase 12, anextension 14, and alatch 16. Thebase 12 has first andsecond ends longitudinal bore 22 through which the barrel of the firearm (not shown) is received. Thefirst end 18 of thebase 12 is mounted to the barrel nut (not shown) of the firearm using conventional techniques, as will be discussed further below.Extension 20 removably attaches tobase 12. - The
base 12 has one ormore grooves 24 formed into the interior of thebase 12. As used herein, the term “grooves” 24 refers to grooves, channels or other similar structures. Thegrooves 24 are generally oriented parallel to thelongitudinal axis 26 of thehandguard 10. As shown inFIGS. 2 and 3-7 , one ormore ridges 28 or raised portions that are formed on the outside of theextension 14 and generally oriented parallel to thelongitudinal axis 26 of the extension. Thegrooves 24 andridges 28 are designed to provide a suitably stable mating of thebase 12 andextension 14 as the two components are slidably mated. Thelatch 16 removably secures thebase 12 andextension 14 together. - As shown in
FIGS. 2 and 8-12 , thebase 12 has threegrooves 24 for receiving threeridges 28 formed on theextension 14. In this embodiment, thelatch 16 is spring-biased and consists of apivot pin 30, apivot arm 32, and aspring 34. Although the present embodiment showslatch 16 disposed onbase 12, persons skilled in the art will understand thatlatch 12 could be disposed onextension 14 in alternative embodiments. Thepivot arm 32 is mounted on thepivot pin 30 which is positioned inpin bores 36 located on thebase 12. As best shown inFIGS. 13 and 14 , thepivot arm 32 has anelongated body 38 with first andsecond ends intermediate pin hole 44. Thepivot arm 32 also includes an inwardlyprotruding catch 46 on itsfirst end 40 and preferably includes an outward facingbutton 48 on itssecond end 42. Aspring recess 50 is formed on the inwardly facing side of thesecond end 42opposite button 48.Spring 34 sets inspring recess 50 and extends to and is captured by a corresponding recess inbase 12. - The
spring 34 biases thepivot arm 32 toward a closed position which causesfirst end 40 ofpivot arm 32 to pivot inwardly and causescatch 46 to project through an opening (not numbered) inbase 12 to engage a locking channel 52 (seeFIGS. 2 and 15 ) onextension 14, thereby lockingbase 12 andextension 14 together. When a user pressesbutton 48 onpivot arm 32 with sufficient force to compressspring 34, the pressing forcebiases pivot arm 32 to the open position and allowsbase 12 andextension 14 to be separated. This allowsextension 14 to be quickly and easily removed from the firearm. - Although
locking channel 52 is show in the drawings as being formed in aseparate channel member 54 which is attached toextension 14 withscrews 56, persons skilled in the art will understand thatlocking channel 52 may be an integral part ofextension 14. As used herein, “locking channel” shall mean any suitable for structure for receivingcatch 46 in a manner sufficient to satisfy the latching function, including without limitation a bore, hole, recess, indentation or the like. - In some embodiments,
base 12 will include twolatches 16, one on each side ofbase 12. In such embodiments, extension 14 will have twocorresponding locking channels 52. This will allow for a secure connection betweenbase 12 andextension 14, which can be easily released by pressingbuttons 48 onlatches 16 to allow removal of theextension 14 frombase 12. - In some embodiments,
base 12 will include aramp portion 58, which may be integrated into thechannel member 54 orridge 28. Whenbase 12 andextension 14 are slidably joined together, catch 46 will engageramp portion 58 and progressively bias thesecond end 42 ofpivot arm 32 outwardly untilcatch 46encounters locking channel 52.Catch 46 will then pivot inwardly and snap into lockingchannel 52, securing theextension 14 tobase 12. - Turning to
FIGS. 10 and 11 , thebase 12 of the present embodiment includes aclamp 60 forfastening base 12 with screws or bolts (not shown) onto the barrel nut of a firearm in conventional manner. Although the present embodiment shows aclamp 60 for attachment to the firearm it should be understood that any suitable means for attaching the base 12 to the firearm may be employed, all of which are considered within the scope of the present invention. -
FIGS. 16-18 depict a second embodiment of the present invention.Base 212 has threegrooves 224 for receiving three correspondingridges 228 ofextension 214.Latches 216 are pivotally mounted in thegrooves 224 for engaging theridges 228 in thebase 212 and lockingextension 214 into place. Preferably, thelatches 216 are pivotally mounted using pivot pins 230. In this embodiment, the springs 234 are configured aroundpivot pins 230 in such a manner as to bias thepivot arm 232 to the closed position. Each of thelatches 216 includes abutton 248 which shows the user where to press to release thelatch 216. Thelatches 216 also include acatch 246 which mates with a corresponding locking channel 252 (in this case a slot) in theextension 14 when thelatch 216 is in the closed position to secure theextension 214 to thebase 212. - To mount the
extension 214 to thebase 212, the user aligns theridges 228 of theextension 214 with thegrooves 224 of thebase 212, presses thebuttons 248 onlatches 216 and then slidesextension 214 intobase 212, releasing thebuttons 248 onlatches 216 to secure the two pieces together. To remove theextension 214 from thebase 212, the user again presses thebuttons 248 to release thelatches 216 and then slides theextension 214 out of thebase 212. In this manner, theextension 214 can be quickly and easily mounted to or removed frombase 212 without extensive, time-consuming reworking of the firearm. -
FIGS. 19-21 depict a third embodiment of the present invention.Base 312 has one ormore grooves 324 for receiving one ormore ridges 328 of theextension 314. In this embodiment, alatch 316 is pivotally mounted ingroove 324 for engagingridge 328 onbase 312 and locking theextension 314 into place. Preferably, latch 316 is pivotally mounted using apivot pin 330 and is spring biased. Thelatch 316 includes abutton portion 348 which shows the user where to press to releaselatch 316.Latch 316 also includes a catch 346 (in this case a tooth) which mates with acorresponding locking channel 352 inextension 314 when in the closed position to secure theextension 314 to thebase 312. Preferably, ridge 324 includes aramp portion 358 which engages thecatch 346 and allowslatch 316 to be forced to the open position while theextension 314 is being slid into thebase 312. Once theextension 314 is all the way intobase 312, lockingchannel 352 allowslatch 316 to snap into place, locking theextension 314 to thebase 312. - To mount the
extension 314 to thebase 312, the user alignsridge 324 ofextension 314 withgroove 314 ofbase 312, presses thebutton portion 348 oflatch 316 and then slidesextension 314 into thebase 312, releasinglatch 316 to secure the two pieces together. To remove theextension 314 from thebase 312, the user again pressesbutton 348 to releaselatch 316 and then slidesextension 314 out ofbase 312. In this manner, extension 314 can be quickly and easily mounted to base 312 without extensive, time-consuming reworking of the firearm. - The embodiments shown and described above are exemplary.
