Abstract

A customizable oven mitt is provided. The customizable oven mitt includes a front panel and a rear panel joined to form a mitt having a wrist opening, a closed ended thumb pocket, and a closed ended finger pocket. The mitt is composed of a heat resistant material that protects the wearer from hot objects. The exterior of the mitt includes a plurality of hook and loop fasteners or similar fasteners that allow decorative accessory components to be secured to the mitt. Additionally, the mitt includes an internal battery power supply operably connected to a temperature sensor and a speaker. When the temperature sensor detects the mitt contacting an object that is above a threshold temperature, the speaker emits an audible alert, notifying the wearer and surrounding individuals.

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to an oven mitt. More specifically, the present invention provides an oven mitt that has a temperature sensor that emits a sound from a speaker when the oven mitt is in direct contact with an object that exceeds a temperature threshold. Additionally, the oven mitt can resemble an animal or a creature by attaching a plurality of accessories thereon.
Cooking is an activity that can be done by individuals across generations. Cooking may allow families to interact with one another and spend quality time together. For some families, it may be difficult for their children to become interested in cooking. Often the children do not find cooking particularly entertaining or enjoyable. In such instances, the adults must find different ways to keep the children engaged and entertained through the duration of the activity. However, if the adult must accomplish other tasks while they are cooking, it can be difficult to keep trying to maintain a child's involvement or interest. Having a way that keeps the children's attention, will allow the adults to expose the children to different types of cooking and meal preparation that will promote growth and development in the children's cooking interest.
With children that do possess an interest in cooking, it is important for the adults to take the proper preventative methods to assure that the child remains safe when they are cooking. One common occurrence that can regularly harm the child is when they touch an object that is too hot. An abundance of kitchen appliances and other cooking equipment can become hot when in use. For a child who may not know that the specific appliance or equipment is hot, they may often suffer from pain or even experience severe burns to their body if they contact the appliance or equipment. For the most part, adults will attempt to closely monitor their child in the kitchen and provide the proper supervision to prevent such injuries from occurring. However, there can be instances where the adults may have to step out of the kitchen for a brief amount of time or the adults may be distracted from a different task. If the adults were to leave the child unsupervised while cooking, the adults want to be assured that the child remains safe until they return. Thus, adults will typically have their children wear an oven mitt to protect the child's hands from contacting the hot appliances or other hot equipment while cooking.
Many different devices can protect a user's hands from getting burned while they are cooking, however, the most common device is an oven mitt. Opposed to a cloth or a potholder, the oven mitt slides onto the user's hand and provides the user with the ability to pick up hot items or place their hand into a hot kitchen appliance. The items may be so hot that without using an oven mitt, the user would have no other means to grasp or move the item without suffering significant burns to their hands. Although with some oven mitts, the object can be so hot that if the user holds the object in their hand for an extended period of time, even with the oven mitt on, they can feel the heat of the object through the material of the oven mitt and suffer burns. For children, they may assume that wearing the oven mitt will completely prevent against them experiencing a burn from an object they are holding. This can often lead to the children holding objects in their hands too long and suffering burns to their hands while they wear the oven mitt. In currently available oven mitts, there is no oven mitt that will inform the wearer that the object they are grasping or the surface that they are touching is too hot even for the oven mitt.
Therefore, there is a defined need amongst the known prior art references for an oven mitt that will be engaging for a child and encourage them to develop an interest in cooking and provide a safety feature that alerts the child when an object or surface is too hot to touch, even when wearing an oven mitt.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the known types of oven mitts now present in the known art, the present invention provides a new oven mitt wherein a temperature sensor is disposed on the oven mitt and is connected to a speaker that emits a sound when the temperature sensor detects a temperature above a predetermined threshold.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an oven mitt that prevents users from suffering an injury from contact with a high temperature object or surfaces. It is common for users to still experience the heat of an object or surface even while wearing an oven mitt. The material of standard oven mitts cannot provide the necessary protect against burns. Some of the individuals are unable to decipher how hot an object or surface may be prior to contact. Providing users with the ability to recognize the high temperature of an object or surface will prevent them from suffering burns through the oven mitt.
Another aspect of the present invention is to allow a user to customize the oven mitt to be appealing to children. Many families enjoy cooking together. When a child can feel like they can express themselves and maintain a high excitement level, they will be more committed to regularly participate in an activity. Thus, having an oven mitt that not only mirrors the appearance of a creature, but one in which the children may customize for their own, will allow the children to feel more a part of the experience and develop an excitement level that will make them want to partake in the cooking process. This can have the children develop an appreciation and passion for cooking.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a temperature sensor that is connected to a speaker. This provides a user with the ability to be aware of the temperature of an object that contacts the temperature sensor. When the temperature sensor makes contact with an object of high temperature, the speaker will emit a sound that will alert the user that the object is of high temperature. This can prevent the user from touching an object with such a high temperature that could be felt through the oven mitt. In the times that a parent or guardian cannot supervise what their child is doing in the kitchen, the temperature sensor will alert the child that the object they are touching is too hot and provide the parent or guardian with an alert that their child might be touching something with a high temperature. For the small children in the early stages of their cooking experience, they will not be familiar with what objects or surfaces are at high temperature within the kitchen and the alert emitted from the speaker can ultimately limit the harm that a child may face when cooking.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Reference is made herein to the attached drawings. Like reference numerals are used throughout the drawings to depict like or similar elements of an oven mitt. The figures are intended for representative purposes only and should not be limiting in any respect.
FIG. 1 shows a front and an internal back view of an embodiment of a customizable oven mitt. The customizable oven mitt 101 comprises of a front panel 202 and a back panel 201. The front panel 202 and the back panel 201 are coupled together to form the body of the customizable oven mitt 101. For example, in some embodiments, the front panel 202 is sewn to the back panel 201. The connection between the front panel 202 and the back panel 201 forms a wrist opening 105 and a pair of cavities. A wearer will place their hand in the body of the customizable oven mitt 101 via the wrist opening 105. A first cavity is a closed ended thumb pocket 103. The closed ended thumb pocket 103 is dimensioned to fit the wearer's thumb while the customizable oven mitt 101 is in use. A second cavity is a closed ended finger pocket 102. The closed ended finger pocket 102 is dimensioned to fit the wearer's non-thumb fingers while the customizable oven mitt 101 is in use. The customizable oven mitt 101 is composed of a heat resistant material that protects the wearer from hot objects.
The back panel 201 of the customizable oven mitt 101 further comprises a plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203. The plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 is disposed on the back panel 201. The plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 secure plurality of decorative accessories to the customizable oven mitt 101. The plurality of decorative accessories is selectively secured to the plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203. The plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 have a variety of sizes and shapes to accommodate for the plurality of decorative accessories. In some embodiments, the plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 have a circular shape. In some embodiments, the plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 have a rectangular shape. In some embodiments, the plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 have an ovular shape. The plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 include position variations. The configuration of the plurality of hook and loop fasteners 203 on the back panel 201 of the customizable oven mitt 101 allow for different arrangements of the plurality of decorative accessories.
The customizable oven mitt 101 further comprises an internal battery power supply 204, a temperature sensor 206, and a speaker 205. The internal battery power supply 204 is positioned between the between the front panel 202 and the back panel 201. In one embodiment, the internal battery power supply 204 is disposed to an interior side of the front panel 202 approximate to the wrist opening 105. The internal battery power supply 204 is operably connected to the temperature sensor 206 and the speaker 205. The temperature sensor 206 is disposed within the front panel 202 of the customizable oven mitt 101 between the closed ended thumb pocket 103 and the closed ended finger pocket 102, such that the temperature sensor 206 detects the temperature of an object being grasped by the customizable oven mitt 101. When the temperature sensor 206 detects the customizable oven mitt 101 contacting an object that is above a threshold temperature, the speaker 205 emits an audible alert, notifying the wearer and surrounding individuals.
FIG. 2 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the customizable oven mitt. The customizable oven mitt 101 includes the plurality of decorative accessories 104. Each decorative accessory 104 engages with a hook and loop fastener 203 to secure the plurality of decorative accessories 104 to the back panel 201 of the customizable oven mitt 101. Wearers selectively attach and remove the plurality of decorative accessories 104 to the back panel 201 of the customizable oven mitt 101.
In some embodiments, the plurality of decorative accessories 104 allow the customizable oven mitt 101 to resemble an animal or another creature, wherein the closed ended thumb pocket 103 corresponds to the lower jaw of the creature. In one embodiment, the plurality of decorative accessories 104 allow the customizable oven mitt 101 to resemble a shark. In another embodiment, the plurality of decorative accessories 104 allow the customizable oven mitt 101 to resemble a snake. In alternate embodiments, other accessories are contemplated, such as clothes, patches, teeth, fins, or other decorations that can allow a wearer to further customize the appearance of the customizable oven mitt 101.
FIG. 3 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the customizable oven mitt in use. In one use, the wearer can place their hand through the wrist opening 105 such that their thumb is disposed within the closed ended thumb pocket and the remainder of the wearer's fingers are within the closed ended finger pocket. The customizable oven mitt 101 will protect the wearer's hand from getting burned when contacting a hot surface. When a wearer grasps an object or places their hand on a surface, the temperature sensor detects the temperature of the surface or the object being grasped. If the temperature exceeds a predetermined temperature threshold, the speaker 205 emits an audible alert to notify the wearer that the object being grasped is hot.
When speaker 205 emits the audible alert it allows the wearer and everyone within the vicinity of the wearer that the object or surface is too hot to touch without the proper protection. When the wearer is new to cooking the speaker 205 allows them to get burned or experience any other type of harm from contacting an object or a surface that is dangerously high in temperature.
It is therefore submitted that the instant invention has been shown and described in what is considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiments. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention

Claims

I claim:

1. An oven mitt, comprising:

a front panel;

a back panel;

wherein the front panel and the back panel are joined to form a body having a wrist opening, a closed ended thumb pocket, and a closed ended finger pocket;

a plurality of hook and loop fasteners exposed on the external surface of the body;

an internal battery power supply is secured to the interior surface of the body;

a temperature sensor operably connected to the internal battery power supply;

a speaker operably connected to the internal battery power supply and the temperature sensor; and

a processor configured to actuate the speaker when the temperature surpasses a designated threshold.

2. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the closed ended thumb pocket is dimension to receive the thumb; wherein the closed ended finger pocket is dimension to receive the fingers; wherein the wrist opening is dimension to encircle the wrist.

3. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the front panel of the body contacts an hot objects being lifted when the thumb is received in the closed ended thumb pocket, the fingers are received in the closed ended finger pocket, and the wrist is encircled by the wrist opening.

4. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the plurality of hook and loop fasteners is configured to secure a plurality of decorative accessories to the body.

5. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the front panel of the body comprises a heat resistant material that protects the wearer from burns or other injuries.

6. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the temperature sensor is disposed within the front panel of the body between the closed ended thumb pocket and the closed ended finger pocket, such that the sensor detects the temperature of an object being grasped.

7. The oven mitt of claim 1, wherein the speaker emits an audible alert when the temperature sensor is in contact with an object with a temperature exceeding a predetermined temperature threshold.
