- This invention relates to cigarette holders, including a cigarette holder with a built-in humidifier system.
- Tobacco cigarettes have been popular for decades, and with the legalization of cannabis in many places, cannabis cigarettes also have risen in popularity.
- As is known, tobacco cigarettes are sold in small pocket-sized packages that typically hold twenty cigarettes. However, cannabis cigarettes are only sold individually if at all, with most smokers having to roll their own cannabis cigarettes by hand. Because of this, the cannabis cigarettes do not come with ready-made multi-unit packages and cannot be carried on one's person as easily.
- In addition, cannabis is best stored in sealed containers at roughly 60% relative humidity to preserve freshness and usability. As such, cannabis cigarettes carried in unsealed containers may dry up and generally expire.
- Accordingly, there is a need for a multi-unit cannabis cigarette holder with a built-in humidifying system.

FIGS. 8A-8B show aspects of a cigarette holder according to exemplary embodiments hereof. - In general, the assembly according to exemplary embodiments hereof provides a holder for cigarettes and the like. The cigarettes may include cannabis, tobacco, herbs, other smokable substances and any combination thereof. In some embodiments, the holder includes an inner tray that is adapted to hold the cigarettes in place within the holder and separated from one another. For example, the cigarettes may be held side-by-side within individual channels within the tray. In some embodiments, the holder may also include an inner humidifier system to regulate the humidity within the holder to an appropriate relative humidity for the proper storing of the cigarettes (depending on the smokable substance contained within each cigarette.
- In one exemplary embodiment hereof as shown in
FIG. 1 , theassembly 10 includes ahousing assembly 100, aninner tray assembly 200, and ahumidity control device 300. In general, theinner tray assembly 200 and thehumidity control device 300 are housed within thehousing assembly 100. Thetray assembly 200 generally holds a number of cigarettes in place within thehousing 100, and thehumidity control device 300 regulates the relative humidity within thehousing 100. Theassembly 10 may include other elements and components as necessary for theassembly 10 to perform its functionalities. - In some embodiments, the
housing assembly 100 includes afront 102, aback 104,top 106, abottom 108, aleft side 110 and aright side 112, thereby defining aninner volume 114 therein. Thehousing assembly 100 may comprise fiberboard, paperboard, paper form, thermoformed polystyrene, plastic, wood, metal, other polymers, other materials and any combination thereof. It is preferable that thehousing assembly 100 be rigid, strong, puncture-proof and relatively light weight. It may also be preferable that the outer surface of thehousing assembly 100 be smooth to the touch and be printable with graphics and such. - In some embodiments, the
housing assembly 100 includes a height H1, a length L1 and a width W1. In general, the height H1 may be chosen to accommodate the length of a standard cigarette resting upright within thehousing 100. Accordingly, if a standard cigarette may measure about 50 mm to 120 mm in length, it may be preferable that the height H1 of thehousing 100 also be at least about 50 mm to 120 mm. In addition, the length L1 may be chosen to accommodate the width of a standard cigarette, and the width W1 of the housing may be chosen to accommodate a plurality of cigarettes (e.g., 2-8 cigarettes side-by-side). Accordingly, the length L1 may be at least 5 mm to 8 mm, and the width W1 may range from about 10 mm (e.g., for about two cigarettes) to about 60 mm (for about eight cigarettes). It is understood that the dimensions described in the above examples are meant for demonstration and that the height H1, width W1 and/or length L1 of thehousing 100 may be chosen to accommodate cigarettes of any dimensions. - In some embodiments, the
housing assembly 100 comprises a material that preserves the relative humidity level (RH) inside thehousing 100 at a constant level. For example, thehousing assembly 100 may comprise a material that generally blocks moister from permeating through the assembly 100 (from the inside to the outside or vice versa). In other embodiments, thehousing assembly 100 may include a surface coating (inside, outside or any combination thereof) that generally blocks moister from permeating through theassembly 100. - In some embodiments as shown in
FIG. 2 , thehousing assembly 100 includes abody portion 116 and atop lid 118. In general, thetop lid 118 may be opened to expose theinner volume 114 within thebody portion 116. In some embodiments, thetop lid 118 may be removed and/or repositioned to allow access to theinner volume 114. For example, thetop lid 118 may include a hinge mechanism that may enable thetop lid 118 to rotate (e.g., backwards) off thebody portion 116 as shown inFIG. 3 . Thetop lid 118 may be rotated away from thebody portion 116 to open theholder 10 and rotated back onto thebody portion 116 to close theholder 10. The direction of rotation may include front to back (as shown inFIG. 3 ), left to right, right to left, diagonal, or any combination thereof. In other embodiments, thelid 118 may be completely removed from the body 116 (e.g., by slide off the top). - In some embodiments, the
body portion 116 and thetop lid 118 are releasably held together in the closed configuration by asecuring mechanism 120. In some embodiments, thesecuring mechanism 120 may include afirst securing portion 120 a configured with thelid 118 and a second securingportion 120 b configured with thebody portion 116. When in the closed position as shown inFIG. 2 , the first securingportion 120 a and thesecond securing mechanism 120 b may at least partially overlap such that the supportingportions first securing portion 120 a may include a first magnet and the second securingportion 120 b may include a second magnet, and the opposing poles of the first and second magnets may be positioned to face one another when thelid 118 is in the closed position. In this way, the opposing poles of the magnets may attract one another thereby holding thelid 118 in the closed position with respect to thebody portion 116. In another implementation, thesecuring portions portions portions lid 118 in the closed positions with respect to thebody portion 116. It is understood that other types of securing mechanisms may also be used, for example (without limitation), snaps, buttons, latches, detents and slots, pressure fit, other types of securing mechanisms and any combination thereof. While thesecuring mechanism 120 is shown in be on thefront 102 of theholder 10, it is understood that thesecuring mechanism 120 may be on any side of theholder 10. In addition, more than onesecuring mechanism 120 may be used as necessary depending on the architecture of theholder 10 and that of thelid 118 and thebody 116. - In some embodiments, the interface between the
lid 118 and thebody 116 may be air-tight when thelid 118 is in its closed position. In some embodiments, the interface between thelid 118 and thebody 116 includes aseal 117 that seals theinner volume 114 from the environment outside thehousing 100 when thelid 116 is in its closed position. Theseal 117 may include a gasket or other type(s) of seal mechanisms comprising any sufficient material such as rubber, silicon, plastic or other materials. In some embodiments, theseal 117 is odor-proof so that the odor of the contents held within the holder 10 (e.g., cannabis cigarettes) may not be noticeable, identified or otherwise recognized outside theholder 10 when theholder 10 is closed. - In some embodiments, the interface between the
lid 118 and thebody 116 may be at an inclined angle on the left 110 and right 112 sides towards the back 104 as shown inFIG. 2 . However, in other embodiments the interface may be straight or may include other curvatures or shapes. - In some embodiments, at least a portion of the
inner tray 200 may be exposed when thelid 118 is positioned into an open position (e.g., the top portion of the inner tray 200) as shown inFIG. 3 . This may allow access to the cigarettes that may be held by thetray 200 when theholder 10 is open (e.g., access to the tops of the cigarettes held inside). When thelid 118 is closed, it may be preferable that theinner tray 200 be enclosed within thehousing 100 so that any cigarettes held inside may secured within theholder 10. - In one exemplary embodiment hereof as shown in
FIG. 4A , thetray assembly 200 incudes atray body 202 with a top 203, a bottom 205, a front 204 and aback 206. Thetray body 202 may comprise fiberboard, paperboard, paper form, thermoformed polystyrene, plastic, wood, metal, other polymers, other materials and any combination thereof. Thetray 202 may be molded, thermoformed, extruded or formed using other methods. - The front width of the
tray body 202 may preferably generally correspond to the inner front width W1 of theinner volume 114, and the side width of thetray body 202 may generally correspond to the inner side length L1 of theinner volume 114. In this way, theinner tray 202 may fit within theinner volume 114 and be generally held therein by pressure fit. The height of thetray body 202 may generally correspond to the height H1 of the housing'sbody 116, but it is understood that the height of thetray body 202 may be larger or smaller than the height H1 of thetray body 116 depending on the architecture and dimensions of thelid 118. In generally, it is preferable that thetray body 202 not obstruct or otherwise inhibit the functionality of the lid 118 (e.g., when thelid 118 is either opened and/or closed). - In some embodiments, the
tray body 202 includes one or more channels 208-1, 208-2, 208-3, . . . 208-n (collectively and individually 208). In some embodiments, thechannels 208 are generally positioned on the front 204 (as shown inFIG. 4A ) on the back 206, or on any combination thereof (e.g., on the front 204 and the back 206). In some embodiments, thechannels 208 are oriented vertically with respect to thetray 202. In some embodiments, thechannels 208 are side-by-side. - In some embodiments as shown in
FIG. 4B , the cross-sectional shape of eachchannel 208 taken from the perspective of cut-lines A-A ofFIG. 4A is a concave arc. In this way, as will be described in other sections, cigarettes may be aligned with and at least partially contained within the longitudinal length of the channels 208 (e.g., vertically within the channels 208). In other embodiments, the cross-sectional shapes of thechannels 208 may be other shapes, such as (without limitation), circular (as shown inFIG. 5A ), square (as shown inFIG. 5B ), triangular, trapezoidal, octagonal, other shapes and any combination thereof. In addition, eachchannel 208 need to match eachother channel 208. It is understood by a person of ordinary skill in the art that thechannels 208 may include any type of cross-sectional shapes that may generally hold at least one cigarette therein, and that the scope of theholder 10 is not limited in any way by the cross-sectional shapes of thechannels 208. In some embodiments, thetray 202 may include 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ormore channels 208. - While one row of
channels 108 is shown inFIGS. 4A, 4B, 5A and 5C , in other embodiments, thetray body 202 may include two or more rows ofchannels 108. In addition, the two or more rows ofchannels 108 may be included in two ormore tray bodies 202 included in thetray assembly 200. In some embodiments, eachchannel 108 in a first row is generally aligned with a correspondingchannels 108 in an adjacent row, while in other embodiments, thechannels 108 in one row may be offset from thechannels 108 in another row. It is understood that thetray assembly 200 may include one or more rows ofchannels 108, and that thechannels 108 may be in any configuration with the one or more rows. - The purpose of each
channel 208 may generally be to hold a single cigarette therein (although it is understood that more than one cigarette may be held within a single channel 208), separate from other cigarettes that may be held inother channels 208. In this way, the cigarettes may not touch one another when held within theholder 10. In addition, it is preferable that thetray 202 provide sufficient rigidity to thechannels 208 so that cigarettes held within thechannels 208 may be generally protected from outside forces. For example, if thehousing body 116 becomes compressed or otherwise damaged (e.g., due to an inadvertent force applied to the body 116), it is preferable that thetray body 202 and thechannels 208 generally hold their shape and withstand the compression so that any cigarettes held therein may be protected. - In some embodiments, the width of each
channel 208 is chosen to be slightly larger than that of the cigarette(s) that theholder 10 may be used with, whether the cigarettes may be mass produced (e.g., tobacco cigarettes) or hand-rolled (e.g., cannabis cigarettes also referred to as joints). In this way, the cigarette may fit within thechannel 208 and be held and protected therein. In some embodiments, the width of each channel is about one-half inch. However, the width of each channel may be other dimensions. It may be preferable that each channel's width be uniform over the length of thechannel 208, but this may not be necessary. For example, somechannels 208 may be tapered from top to bottom so that the bottom of thechannel 208 may have a smaller width than the top of thechannel 208. In this way, the bottom of thechannel 208 may come into contact with the bottom of the cigarette and thereby hold the cigarette in place within thechannel 208 via pressure fit. In addition, the width of eachchannel 208 need not match the widths ofother channels 208, and somechannels 208 may have larger widths to accommodate larger width cigarettes. - In some embodiments, the
holder 10 includes a holdingarea 210 that may be adapted to hold thehumidity control device 300. In some embodiments, the holdingarea 210 may be configured with thetray assembly 200 and may include one or more slots, cavities, cutouts, openings, adhesive, double-sided tape, pegs, other types of holdingareas 210 configured with thetray 202 and any combination thereof. In some embodiments, the holdingarea 210 may include an area within theinner volume 114 that is unobstructed and adapted to receive thehumidity control device 300. In this case, the holdingarea 210 may or may not be configured with thetray 202. For example, the holdingarea 210 may simply include an area within theinner volume 114 of theholder 10 that is not obstructed by thetray 202. In some embodiments, the holdingarea 210 is sized and shaped to accommodate thehumidity control device 300 and to hold it therein. - In one embodiment as shown in
FIG. 4A , the holdingarea 210 may be positioned within thetray body 202 below thechannels 208 so that thehumidity control device 300 may be positioned generally below any cigarettes held within thechannels 208. While the holdingarea 210 is shown to extend from the left side of thetray 202 to the right side of thetray 202, this may not be necessary, and the holdingarea 210 may extend a sufficient distance to accommodate thehumidity control device 300. In other embodiments, the holdingarea 210 may include an area within theinner volume 114 below thetray body 202 but not integrated with thetray body 202. - In some embodiments, the holding
area 210 may be configured on the back 206 of thetray 202 as shown inFIGS. 5A and 5B (withFIG. 5B taken from the perspective of cut-lines B-B ofFIG. 5A ), or within theinner volume 114 behind the tray, so that thehumidity control device 300 may be positioned generally behind any cigarettes held in thechannels 208. In other embodiments, the holdingarea 210 may be configured on thefront 204 of thetray 202, or within theinner volume 114 in front of the tray. In other embodiments, the holdingarea 210 may be to the left or to the right of the channels 208 (configured with thetray 202 or simply beside thetray 202 within the inner volume 114). It is understood by a person of ordinary skill in the art that the holdingarea 210 may be positioned anywhere within theinner volume 114, whether configured with the tray 202 (even partially) or not, so that thehumidity control device 300 may be held therein. - In one exemplary embodiment hereof, the
humidity control device 300 is positioned within theholder 10 to set and generally regulate a desired relative humidity level (RH) within theholder 10 when theholder 10 is closed. In some embodiments, thehumidity control device 300 includes a 2-way humidity control device 302 such as a saturated salt solution device 304. The saturated salt solution device 304 may include a solution of water (preferably distilled) and salt (preferably chemically pure) within a breathable pouch or other adequate type of container and adapted to regulate the relative humidity within theholder 10. The type of salt(s) used in the solution may be chosen to enable the device 304 to regulate the relative humidity to a desired level. For example, for a particular desired relative humidity RH1, the saturated salt solution device 304 may be designed to absorb moister when the relative humidity surrounding the solution is above the desired RH1, and release moister (preferably pure water vapor) when the relative humidity surrounding the solution is below the desire RH1. In this way, the device 304 may generally maintain the relative humidity RH1 within theclosed holder 10. Other types of 2-way humidity control devices 302 and/or 1-way humidity control devices also may be used. - In some embodiments, the salts may include one or more of the following (without limitation): ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), lithium chloride (LiCl), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), magnesium nitrate (Mg(NO3)2), natrium chloride (NaCl), potassium sulphate (K2SO4), potassium nitrate KNO3), potassium chloride (KCl), potassium acetate (CH3CO2K), potassium hydroxide (KOH), sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium nitrite (NaNO2), sodium dichromate (Na2Cr2O7), other salts and any combination thereof. The RH generally set and maintained by the salt solution device 304 may depend on the salt(s) included, the temperature of the device 304, impurities in the salt(s) and/or water, the speed of the saturation and other factors.
- In some embodiments, the saturated salt solution device 304 is formulated to set and maintain the RH within the
closed holder 10 at about 55% to 65%. In some embodiments, the RH is set and maintained at about 60%. It is understood that thehumidity control device 300 may be designed to generally set and maintain the RH within theclosed holder 10 to any desired RH, and that the scope of theholder 10 is not limited in any way by the type ofhumidity control device 300 or by the RH level generally set and/or regulated by thehumidity control device 300 within theholder 10. - In some embodiments, the saturated salt solution device 304 may include a Boveda® 2-way humidity control device. It may be preferable that the device 304 be formulated to last 1-2 months or longer.
- In some exemplary embodiments hereof, the
inner tray assembly 200 and thehumidity control device 300 are placed within theinner volume 114 of thehousing 100 and secured therein as shown in the cut-away schematic ofFIG. 7 .FIGS. 8A and 8B show example configurations of thehousing assembly 100, tray assembly 200 (with cigarettes C within the channels 208-n) andhumidity control device 300 taken from the perspective of cut-lines D-D ofFIG. 7 . It is understood that these schematics are meant for demonstration and are not meant to show the exact layout and/or proportions of the various elements within thehousing 100 with respect to one another. - It is preferable that the entirety of the
inner tray 202 and of thehumidity control device 300 be enclosed within theholder 10 when theholder 10 is closed. It is also preferable that any cigarettes C placed within any of thechannels 208 of thetray 202 be entirely enclosed within theholder 10 when theholder 10 is closed, and that the cigarettes C be easily accessible (e.g., from the top) when theholder 10 is opened. In some embodiments, the upper portion of the cigarettes C may extend beyond the top of thetray body 202 so that the upper portions may be exposed when thetop lid 118 of theholder 10 is repositioned to open theholder 10. In this way, the upper portions of the cigarettes C may be easily grasped to remove the cigarettes C from theholder 10. - It is also preferable that the
inner volume 114 include adequate space to allow for sufficient air flow between thehumidity control device 300 and the cigarettes C held within thechannels 208 so that thehumidity control device 300 may generally set and regulate the RH level of the area surrounding the cigarettes C and of the cigarettes C themselves. In this way, the smoking material included within the cigarettes C may be generally held at a desired RH level to maximize the storage conditions of the cigarettes C for freshness and longevity. - In some embodiments, the
tray assembly 300 is secured within theinner volume 114 of thehousing 100 by apad 121. Thepad 121 may generally secure thetray 202 within theinner volume 114 by attaching a surface of thetray 202 to an inner surface of thehousing 100. For example, thepad 121 may secure the back 206 of thetray 202 to the back inner surface of the housing (FIG. 8A ), thefront 204 of thetray 202 to the front inner surface of the housing 100 (FIG. 8B ), the bottom of thetray 202 to the bottom inner surface of thehousing 100, or any other portion of thetray 202 to any other portion of the inner surfaces of thehousing 100. Thepad 121 may include a foam pad, a cardboard pad, a plastic pad, other types of pads and any combination thereof. Thepad 121 may use adhesive, double-sided tape, other types of securing methods or any combination thereof to attach thetray 202 to an inner surface of thehousing 100. - Those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate and understand, upon reading this description, that embodiments hereof may provide different and/or other advantages, and that not all embodiments or implementations need have all advantages.
- Where a process is described herein, those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that the process may operate without any user intervention. In another embodiment, the process includes some human intervention (e.g., a step is performed by or with the assistance of a human).
- As used herein, including in the claims, the phrase “at least some” means “one or more,” and includes the case of only one. Thus, e.g., the phrase “at least some ABCs” means “one or more ABCs”, and includes the case of only one ABC.
- As used herein, including in the claims, term “at least one” should be understood as meaning “one or more”, and therefore includes both embodiments that include one or multiple components. Furthermore, dependent claims that refer to independent claims that describe features with “at least one” have the same meaning, both when the feature is referred to as “the” and “the at least one”.
- As used in this description, the term “portion” means some or all. So, for example, “A portion of X” may include some of “X” or all of “X”. In the context of a conversation, the term “portion” means some or all of the conversation.
- As used herein, including in the claims, the phrase “using” means “using at least,” and is not exclusive. Thus, e.g., the phrase “using X” means “using at least X.” Unless specifically stated by use of the word “only”, the phrase “using X” does not mean “using only X.”
- As used herein, including in the claims, the phrase “based on” means “based in part on” or “based, at least in part, on,” and is not exclusive.
