Abstract
A toy with radial extensions may have a core having a multiple surfaces, one of which has extensions with termini and another of which has extensions with a plurality of portions and at least one portion of the plurality of portions is offset from an axis extending through at least one other portion of the plurality of portions. The toy may also have a fascia on the second surface circumscribed by the first surface.
Description
- Figurines, including toys and novelty items, may be used for enjoyment, stress reduction, and display purposes.
- Toy figures have become an extremely popular play option and well known to children and adults in the toy industry, representing anything imaginary as well as real objects and people.
- Toys have also been known to personify animals and inanimate objects as well as portray popular themes.
- A toy with radial extensions may comprise a core body having a first surface and a second surface, a first plurality of extensions may extend from the first surface and have termini, and a second plurality of extensions may also extend from the first surface. Each of the first plurality of extensions may have their termini located along an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of the core body. - A toy may comprise a plurality of radially extending components with multiple portions disposed about a core body. Each axis of the plurality of radially extending components may intersect substantially at a point within the core body and a majority of the plurality of radially extending components have substantially the same type of portions and a minority of the plurality of radially extending components have a portion that is offset from the radially extending portion.
- A toy made out of shape memory foam may comprise a plurality of radially extending components with multiple portions disposed about a core body. Each axis of the plurality of radially extending components may intersect substantially at a point within the core body and a majority of the plurality of radially extending components have substantially the same type of portions and a minority of the plurality of radially extending components have a portion that is offset from the radially extending portion.

Parts and components of each figure may be substitutes for other components in other figures to achieve the various designs, structures, and embodiments disclosed herein.
- With reference to the illustrative embodiment provided by
FIGS. 1-5 , atoy 100 may comprise a substantiallyspherical core body 5 having a surface with extendingradii 10, hereinafter referred to as the “extension surface,” and afascia 11 adjacent the extension surface. Whilecore body 5 may be illustrated as a sphere, any polyhedron or amorphous structure may be able to function as anappropriate core body 5. At least one type ofradial extension 20, hereinafter referred to as a “type 1 extension,” may comprise a plurality of portions, at least one portion extending substantially radially away from the center of thecore body 5 and another portion being located substantially on an axis extending substantially radially away from the center ofcore body 5. At least one other type ofextension 40, hereinafter referred to as a “type 2 extension,” may comprise a plurality of portions, at least one portion extending substantially radially away from the center ofcore body 5 and at least one other portion offset from an axis extending substantially radially away from the center ofcore body 5. In a preferred embodiment there are a plurality of type 1 extensions and type 2 extensions. In another preferred embodiment there are more type 1 extensions than type 2 extensions. In another preferred embodiment, there are an even number of type 2 extensions. - In another exemplary embodiment provided by
FIGS. 1-2 and 4-5 ,fascia 11 may be any space oncore body 5 that is substantially surrounded by the surface withextensions 20/40 10. In another exemplary embodiment,fascia 11 may be that space that is substantially open as compared to any other space on thetoy 100, e.g., relatively free of contours or surface features or extensions (type 1, type 2, or any others). In a preferred embodiment according toFIG. 1 ,fascia 11 may be the relatively smoother surface oncore body 5. - According to the illustrative embodiment of
FIGS. 1-5 ,toy 100 may not have any type 1 extension or type 2 extensions on thefascia 11. However, anexemplary toy 100 may have only one of the two types of extensions onfascia 11. According to the illustrative embodiment ofFIGS. 1-5 ,toy 100 may only have type 2 extensions oncore body 5 and not onfascia 11. In an alternative embodiment, type 2 extensions may be located on thefascia 11, but then never more than the number of type 1 extensions. In a preferred embodiment, there may be only two (2) type 2 extensions on thetoy 100 in either thesurface 10 orfascia 11. - In an exemplary embodiment according to
FIGS. 1-5 , aterminus 30 ofextension 20 may be substantially spherical, but may be any other polyhedron whose center may lie substantially on an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of core body 5 (e.g., cubes, prisms, pyramids, octahedrons, ellipsoids, discs). In a preferred embodiment, alltermini 30 ofextension 20 may be spherical. In a further preferred embodiment, alltermini 30 ofextension 20 are spheres.Termini 30 may also be made out of different material from the rest ofextension 20 and/orcore body 5. In a preferred embodiment, termini 30 are integrated with theirrespective extension 20. In an alternative embodiment, termini 30 may be interchangeable withother termini 30 and/or 50 such as by being attached via magnets, Velcro, or other mechanical fastening methods known to those skilled in the art. - In another exemplary embodiment according to
FIGS. 1-5 , aterminus 50 ofextension 40 may be cylindrical, but may be any other polyhedron or other shape reflecting a real or imaginary thing (e.g., weapons, a head, a point of attachment for another accessory) or tactile manipulator (e.g., a hand, claw, tentacle). In a preferred embodiment, theterminus 50 may only couple to the offset portion ofextension 40. In an alternative embodiment,terminus 50 may couple to both the radially extending portion ofextension 40 and the offset portion ofextension 40.Termini 50 may also be made out of different material from the rest ofextension 40 and/orcore body 5. In a preferred embodiment, termini 50 are integrated with theirrespective extension 40. In an alternative embodiment, termini 50 may be interchangeable withother termini 30 and/or 50 such as by being attached via magnets, Velcro, or other mechanical fastening methods known to those skilled in the art. - In yet another exemplary embodiment according to
FIGS. 1-5 ,extensions 20 may be arranged aboutsurface 10 so as to be in a substantially repeating pattern. In a further aspect of this exemplary embodiment, theextensions 20 may be arranged so that theextensions 20 may maintain thetoy 100 in a substantially balanced state whentoy 100 is placed upon a surface. In another aspect,extensions toy 100 in a substantially balanced state whentoy 100 is placed upon a surface. In yet another aspect,extensions 40 may be arranged so that theextensions 40 alone maintaintoy 100 in a substantially balanced state whentoy 100 is placed upon a surface. - Referring to the exemplary embodiment according to
FIGS. 6-11 , anexemplary toy 200 may have substantially similar features as thetoy 100 ofFIGS. 1-5 and the disclosures related to the similar features oftoy 100 apply equally to those same features with respect totoy 200. As previously described above,toy 200 may provide for acore body 5 that is a polyhedron that has spherical and rectilinear components. However, according to the exemplary embodiment ofFIGS. 6-11 , atoy 200 may have one or moredifferent termini 60 forextensions 40 havingreception spaces 70 therein (FIGS. 6 and 9-11 ) and the addition of a substantiallyflat surface 12adjacent surface 10 and/or fascia 11 (FIGS. 7-8 and 10-11 ). Accordingly, the addition offlat surface 12 may change the perimeter offascia 11 as well as the total surface area ofsurface 10. Consequently,flat surface 12 may reduce the number ofextensions 20 and/or 40. - In one embodiment according to
FIGS. 6-11 ,surface 12 may be smooth and without any contours. In an alternative embodiment,surface 12 may have one or more contours, holes, crevices, and/or reception points for attaching to a particular surface or object (e.g., pencil eraser tops, papers as a binder clip, Lego® or other snap-fit or friction-fit building block systems, electric outlets, keychains or book bag chains, holiday lights as a decoration, lanyards or other string/wire/rope hangers, hooks for hanging as decorations). In yet another alternative embodiment,surface 12 may be a reception area for electronic circuits for playing sounds whentoy 200 is squeezed or may house one or more magnets to allowtoy 200 to adhere to metal surfaces. - In yet another embodiment according to
FIGS. 6-11 ,termini 60 may havereception spaces 70 fortoy 200 to receive articles or interact with other toy systems (e.g., spaces such as those found in Lego® minifigures, spaces to hold weapons for other toy sets or unique pieces fortoy 200, spaces to hold pencils, pens, work tools, utensils, papers/letters, office supplies, jewelry, toothbrushes).Spaces 70 may also be used to enabletoy 200 to adhere to other surfaces or be attached in any manner for which surface 12 may have been disclosed previously as being configured to also do. Those skilled in the art may readily contemplate numerous uses ofspaces 70 andsurface 12 either alone or in combination to increase the flexibility and application oftoy 200. - Referring to the exemplary embodiment according to
FIGS. 12-18 , anexemplary toy 300 may have substantially similar features as thetoy 100 ofFIGS. 1-5 and/or thetoy 200 ofFIGS. 6-11 and the disclosures related to the similar features oftoys toy 300. - Like an
exemplary core body 5, anexemplary core body 6 of anexemplary toy 300 may have an imperfectly spherical surface, including an oblate spheroid surface or a surface with nooks, crannies, dimples, or trenches and troughs. Further,exemplary toy 300 may have much more articulation on each of itstermini 50 for itsextensions 40. Further,exemplary toy 300 may have a substantially contouredfascia 13 comprising one ormore indents 14,major protrusions 15,cavities 16,minor protrusions 17, and overlapping/overhang structures 18, all or none of which have any limitation on the axial radial extension they have fromcore body 6. For example,fascia 13 may comprise anindent 14 in which objects, including printed materials, paints, or other additives may be inserted and a combination ofmajor protrusions 15,cavities 16,minor protrusions 17, andoverhang structures 18 that take the form of a face. However,FIGS. 12-18 provide for an exemplary face infascia 13 formed from the combination ofprotrusions 15/17,cavities 16, indents 14, and overlap/overhang structures 18. In a preferred embodiment, overlap/overhang structure 18 may be adhered to one ormore protrusions 15/17 by being integrally molded to the same. However, those skilled in the art would understand other forms of overlap/overhang structures 18 that may attach to afascia 13 so as to extend from one or more of theindents 14,protrusions 15/16, and/orcavities 16. - In the exemplary embodiment of
FIG. 14 , anexemplary toy 300 may have asection 19 that may house one or more circuits (e.g., sound-making or light-up circuitry and other features disclosed with respect to toy 100) to be included withintoy 300. Alternatively,section 19 may be removed to expose a coupling junction or space (not shown) forcoupling toy 300 to the same or similar articles discussed above with respect tosection 12 of anexemplary toy 200. - As has been disclosed,
toys 100/200/300 may be molded out of numerous types of materials, such as plastic, foam, rubber, elastomers, metal, ceramic, glass, or a combination of the same in any combination of its parts, e.g.,core body 5/6,extensions 20/40,termini 30/50/60, and fascia 13 structures enumerated 14-18.Toy 100/200/300 or any of their constituent parts may be made of materials that are meant to stick to surfaces, be magnetized, transparent, color-changing in response to heat/water, stretchable, bendable, and articulating.Toys 100/200/300 may also be solid, hollow, or a combination of the same for the entirety of thetoy 100/200/300 and/or its constituent parts, e.g.,core body 5/6 may be hollow whileextensions 20/40,termini 30/50/60, and fascia 13 structures enumerated 14-18 are solid. In a preferred embodiment,toy 100/200/300 is made out of a memory foam capable of regaining its shape after receiving a force and being released from such force. In that preferred embodiment,toy 100/200/300 is made solid throughout and uses the same material for all of its constituent parts. - While in numerous of the foregoing embodiments a
toy toy 100,toy 200, and/ortoy 300 may be combined or interchanged to serve a particular purpose or multiple purposes in accordance with the disclosures herein. Furthermore, any one of the extensions, extension portions, protrusions, cavities, and overhang structures embodiments may be interchanged, combined, and/or modified in view of any other to achieve the benefits identified as well as those which are inherent from the disclosures contained herein. The foregoing disclosedtoys toys 100/200/300 may have radial extensions that are dimensioned to interact withadjacent toys 100/200/300 to build larger structures and/or attach. In other words,extensions 20 andtermini 30 of onetoy 100/200/300 may be designed to slidingly interact with anotherextension 20 andtermini 30 of anothertoy 100/200/300. According to this embodiment,toys 100/200/300 may be used to build larger structures. Alternatively,extensions 40 andtermini 50 may also slidingly interact as per the above-mentioned embodiments related toextensions 20 andtermini 30 to accomplish the same structure-building capabilities. - Many further variations and modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in art upon making reference to above disclosure and foregoing interrelated and interchangeable illustrative embodiments, which are given by way of example only, and are not intended to limit the scope and spirit of the interrelated embodiments of the invention described herein.
Claims (20)
1. A toy with radial extensions, comprising:
a core body comprising a first surface and a second surface;
a first plurality of extensions may extend from the first surface and have termini, each of which having their termini located along an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of the core body;
a second plurality of extensions may also extend from the first surface, each of which having a plurality of portions, wherein at least one portion of the plurality of portions is offset from an axis extending through at least one other portion of the plurality of portions; and
a fascia on the second surface, the fascia being circumscribed by the first surface.
2. The toy of claim 1 , wherein the core body is substantially spherical.
3. The toy of claim 2 , wherein the first plurality of extensions support provide balance for the toy.
4. The toy of claim 3 , wherein the toy is made of one type of material.
5. The toy of claim 4 , wherein the toy is made out of memory foam.
6. The toy of claim 1 , wherein the fascia has at least one protrusion and at least one cavity.
7. The toy of claim 6 , wherein the fascia has at least one overhanging structure coupled to a protrusion.
8. The toy of claim 7 , wherein the second plurality of extensions have termini.
9. The toy of claim 8 , wherein the termini of the second plurality of extensions are different from the termini of the first plurality of extensions.
10. The toy of claim 9 , wherein there are only two termini of the second plurality of extensions.
11. The toy of claim 10 , wherein the first plurality of extensions support provide balance for the toy.
12. The toy of claim 11 , wherein the toy is made of one type of material.
13. The toy of claim 12 , wherein the toy is made out of memory foam.
14. The toy of claim 1 , wherein the termini of the first plurality of extensions are substantially the same.
15. The toy of claim 14 , wherein the termini of the first plurality of extensions are substantially spherical.
16. The toy of claim 14 , wherein the termini of the first plurality of extensions are made out of memory foam.
17. The toy of claim 1 , wherein the core body is made of one type of material.
18. The toy of claim 17 , wherein the core body is made out of memory foam.
19. A toy, comprising:
a plurality of radially extending components with multiple portions disposed about a core body, wherein each axis of the plurality of radially extending components intersect substantially at a point within the core body, wherein a majority of the plurality of radially extending components have substantially the same type of portions and a minority of the plurality of radially extending components have a portion that is offset from the radially extending portion.
20. The toy of claim 19 , wherein the toy is made out of shape-memory foam.
