  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • With reference to the illustrative embodiment provided by FIGS. 1-5, a toy 100 may comprise a substantially spherical core body 5 having a surface with extending radii 10, hereinafter referred to as the “extension surface,” and a fascia 11 adjacent the extension surface. While core body 5 may be illustrated as a sphere, any polyhedron or amorphous structure may be able to function as an appropriate core body 5. At least one type of radial extension 20, hereinafter referred to as a “type 1 extension,” may comprise a plurality of portions, at least one portion extending substantially radially away from the center of the core body 5 and another portion being located substantially on an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of core body 5. At least one other type of extension 40, hereinafter referred to as a “type 2 extension,” may comprise a plurality of portions, at least one portion extending substantially radially away from the center of core body 5 and at least one other portion offset from an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of core body 5. In a preferred embodiment there are a plurality of type 1 extensions and type 2 extensions. In another preferred embodiment there are more type 1 extensions than type 2 extensions. In another preferred embodiment, there are an even number of type 2 extensions.
  • In another exemplary embodiment provided by FIGS. 1-2 and 4-5, fascia 11 may be any space on core body 5 that is substantially surrounded by the surface with extensions 20/40 10. In another exemplary embodiment, fascia 11 may be that space that is substantially open as compared to any other space on the toy 100, e.g., relatively free of contours or surface features or extensions (type 1, type 2, or any others). In a preferred embodiment according to FIG. 1, fascia 11 may be the relatively smoother surface on core body 5.
  • According to the illustrative embodiment of FIGS. 1-5, toy 100 may not have any type 1 extension or type 2 extensions on the fascia 11. However, an exemplary toy 100 may have only one of the two types of extensions on fascia 11. According to the illustrative embodiment of FIGS. 1-5, toy 100 may only have type 2 extensions on core body 5 and not on fascia 11. In an alternative embodiment, type 2 extensions may be located on the fascia 11, but then never more than the number of type 1 extensions. In a preferred embodiment, there may be only two (2) type 2 extensions on the toy 100 in either the surface 10 or fascia 11.
  • In an exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 1-5, a terminus 30 of extension 20 may be substantially spherical, but may be any other polyhedron whose center may lie substantially on an axis extending substantially radially away from the center of core body 5 (e.g., cubes, prisms, pyramids, octahedrons, ellipsoids, discs). In a preferred embodiment, all termini 30 of extension 20 may be spherical. In a further preferred embodiment, all termini 30 of extension 20 are spheres. Termini 30 may also be made out of different material from the rest of extension 20 and/or core body 5. In a preferred embodiment, termini 30 are integrated with their respective extension 20. In an alternative embodiment, termini 30 may be interchangeable with other termini 30 and/or 50 such as by being attached via magnets, Velcro, or other mechanical fastening methods known to those skilled in the art.
  • In another exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 1-5, a terminus 50 of extension 40 may be cylindrical, but may be any other polyhedron or other shape reflecting a real or imaginary thing (e.g., weapons, a head, a point of attachment for another accessory) or tactile manipulator (e.g., a hand, claw, tentacle). In a preferred embodiment, the terminus 50 may only couple to the offset portion of extension 40. In an alternative embodiment, terminus 50 may couple to both the radially extending portion of extension 40 and the offset portion of extension 40. Termini 50 may also be made out of different material from the rest of extension 40 and/or core body 5. In a preferred embodiment, termini 50 are integrated with their respective extension 40. In an alternative embodiment, termini 50 may be interchangeable with other termini 30 and/or 50 such as by being attached via magnets, Velcro, or other mechanical fastening methods known to those skilled in the art.
  • In yet another exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 1-5, extensions 20 may be arranged about surface 10 so as to be in a substantially repeating pattern. In a further aspect of this exemplary embodiment, the extensions 20 may be arranged so that the extensions 20 may maintain the toy 100 in a substantially balanced state when toy 100 is placed upon a surface. In another aspect, extensions 20 and 40 may cooperate to maintain the toy 100 in a substantially balanced state when toy 100 is placed upon a surface. In yet another aspect, extensions 40 may be arranged so that the extensions 40 alone maintain toy 100 in a substantially balanced state when toy 100 is placed upon a surface.
  • Referring to the exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 6-11, an exemplary toy 200 may have substantially similar features as the toy 100 of FIGS. 1-5 and the disclosures related to the similar features of toy 100 apply equally to those same features with respect to toy 200. As previously described above, toy 200 may provide for a core body 5 that is a polyhedron that has spherical and rectilinear components. However, according to the exemplary embodiment of FIGS. 6-11, a toy 200 may have one or more different termini 60 for extensions 40 having reception spaces 70 therein (FIGS. 6 and 9-11) and the addition of a substantially flat surface 12 adjacent surface 10 and/or fascia 11 (FIGS. 7-8 and 10-11). Accordingly, the addition of flat surface 12 may change the perimeter of fascia 11 as well as the total surface area of surface 10. Consequently, flat surface 12 may reduce the number of extensions 20 and/or 40.
  • In one embodiment according to FIGS. 6-11, surface 12 may be smooth and without any contours. In an alternative embodiment, surface 12 may have one or more contours, holes, crevices, and/or reception points for attaching to a particular surface or object (e.g., pencil eraser tops, papers as a binder clip, Lego® or other snap-fit or friction-fit building block systems, electric outlets, keychains or book bag chains, holiday lights as a decoration, lanyards or other string/wire/rope hangers, hooks for hanging as decorations). In yet another alternative embodiment, surface 12 may be a reception area for electronic circuits for playing sounds when toy 200 is squeezed or may house one or more magnets to allow toy 200 to adhere to metal surfaces.
  • In yet another embodiment according to FIGS. 6-11, termini 60 may have reception spaces 70 for toy 200 to receive articles or interact with other toy systems (e.g., spaces such as those found in Lego® minifigures, spaces to hold weapons for other toy sets or unique pieces for toy 200, spaces to hold pencils, pens, work tools, utensils, papers/letters, office supplies, jewelry, toothbrushes). Spaces 70 may also be used to enable toy 200 to adhere to other surfaces or be attached in any manner for which surface 12 may have been disclosed previously as being configured to also do. Those skilled in the art may readily contemplate numerous uses of spaces 70 and surface 12 either alone or in combination to increase the flexibility and application of toy 200.
  • Referring to the exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 12-18, an exemplary toy 300 may have substantially similar features as the toy 100 of FIGS. 1-5 and/or the toy 200 of FIGS. 6-11 and the disclosures related to the similar features of toys 100 and 200 apply equally to those same features with respect to toy 300.
  • Like an exemplary core body 5, an exemplary core body 6 of an exemplary toy 300 may have an imperfectly spherical surface, including an oblate spheroid surface or a surface with nooks, crannies, dimples, or trenches and troughs. Further, exemplary toy 300 may have much more articulation on each of its termini 50 for its extensions 40. Further, exemplary toy 300 may have a substantially contoured fascia 13 comprising one or more indents 14, major protrusions 15, cavities 16, minor protrusions 17, and overlapping/overhang structures 18, all or none of which have any limitation on the axial radial extension they have from core body 6. For example, fascia 13 may comprise an indent 14 in which objects, including printed materials, paints, or other additives may be inserted and a combination of major protrusions 15, cavities 16, minor protrusions 17, and overhang structures 18 that take the form of a face. However, FIGS. 12-18 provide for an exemplary face in fascia 13 formed from the combination of protrusions 15/17, cavities 16, indents 14, and overlap/overhang structures 18. In a preferred embodiment, overlap/overhang structure 18 may be adhered to one or more protrusions 15/17 by being integrally molded to the same. However, those skilled in the art would understand other forms of overlap/overhang structures 18 that may attach to a fascia 13 so as to extend from one or more of the indents 14, protrusions 15/16, and/or cavities 16.
  • In the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 14, an exemplary toy 300 may have a section 19 that may house one or more circuits (e.g., sound-making or light-up circuitry and other features disclosed with respect to toy 100) to be included within toy 300. Alternatively, section 19 may be removed to expose a coupling junction or space (not shown) for coupling toy 300 to the same or similar articles discussed above with respect to section 12 of an exemplary toy 200.
  • As has been disclosed, toys 100/200/300 may be molded out of numerous types of materials, such as plastic, foam, rubber, elastomers, metal, ceramic, glass, or a combination of the same in any combination of its parts, e.g., core body 5/6, extensions 20/40, termini 30/50/60, and fascia 13 structures enumerated 14-18. Toy 100/200/300 or any of their constituent parts may be made of materials that are meant to stick to surfaces, be magnetized, transparent, color-changing in response to heat/water, stretchable, bendable, and articulating. Toys 100/200/300 may also be solid, hollow, or a combination of the same for the entirety of the toy 100/200/300 and/or its constituent parts, e.g., core body 5/6 may be hollow while extensions 20/40, termini 30/50/60, and fascia 13 structures enumerated 14-18 are solid. In a preferred embodiment, toy 100/200/300 is made out of a memory foam capable of regaining its shape after receiving a force and being released from such force. In that preferred embodiment, toy 100/200/300 is made solid throughout and uses the same material for all of its constituent parts.
  • While in numerous of the foregoing embodiments a toy 100, 200, and 300 has been specifically identified, any feature(s) referred to in a discussion of any embodiment of toy 100, toy 200, and/or toy 300 may be combined or interchanged to serve a particular purpose or multiple purposes in accordance with the disclosures herein. Furthermore, any one of the extensions, extension portions, protrusions, cavities, and overhang structures embodiments may be interchanged, combined, and/or modified in view of any other to achieve the benefits identified as well as those which are inherent from the disclosures contained herein. The foregoing disclosed toys 100, 200, and 300 may be designed out of different materials and have an array of protrusions, cavities, and overhang structures to make them into multifarious figures for use as collectibles. Alternatively, toys 100/200/300 may have radial extensions that are dimensioned to interact with adjacent toys 100/200/300 to build larger structures and/or attach. In other words, extensions 20 and termini 30 of one toy 100/200/300 may be designed to slidingly interact with another extension 20 and termini 30 of another toy 100/200/300. According to this embodiment, toys 100/200/300 may be used to build larger structures. Alternatively, extensions 40 and termini 50 may also slidingly interact as per the above-mentioned embodiments related to extensions 20 and termini 30 to accomplish the same structure-building capabilities.
  • Many further variations and modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in art upon making reference to above disclosure and foregoing interrelated and interchangeable illustrative embodiments, which are given by way of example only, and are not intended to limit the scope and spirit of the interrelated embodiments of the invention described herein.
