Abstract
Description
- A container with a security lock is provided. The container may have a lid (or “top”) portion and a bottom portion. The lid portion may have an exterior cover and a bottom ring which are separated by a compression spring. Once extended protrusions on both the exterior cover and bottom ring of the lid are vertically aligned, a specific pressing and then twisting motion must be used to separate the lid from the bottom portion to gain access to the interior of the container. The bottom portion may receive contents such as medication which may be securely stored and protected from children who might otherwise access an unprotected and unsecured container.
- Containers with security locks are known. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 9,481,496 to Cottle discloses a child resistant container for nicotine products. The container comprises latching elements adapted to interlock with cooperating latching elements when said lid is pushed onto a said base to retain said lid to said base. The latching elements are further adapted to disengage from said cooperating latching elements when a simultaneous force is exerted on all releasable latching arrangements by two hands of a user or the like.
- Further, U.S. Pat. No. 9,187,220 to Biesecker discloses a cap having a top wall, an outer peripheral edge, a first section, and a second section. A skirt depends from the outer peripheral edge. The skirt includes an attached end, a free end, a plurality of slots, and a plurality of apertures. Each aperture is spaced-apart from the free end of the skirt. The top wall has a first configuration and a second configuration. When the top wall is in the first configuration, the first section is generally planer and the second section is generally arcuate. When the top wall is in the first configuration, the skirt extends generally perpendicularly to the first section to generally engage at least a portion of a container. When the top wall is in the second configuration, the free end of the skirt extends radially outwardly from the attached end thereof to allow the cap to be removed from the container.
- Still further, U.S. Pat. No. 8,931,657 to Kientzle discloses a pharmaceutical container having a bottle having a bottom wall and side walls. A ridge proximate to the bottom wall projects from an interior surface of at least one of the side walls, to facilitate nested stacking of a plurality of bottles. One or more of the side walls includes a cover locking receptacle proximate to the top end of the side wall. The pharmaceutical container also includes a cover including a sliding lid contained in a cover housing. The cover housing has a top wall, which includes an opening, and cover side walls. A child-resistant closure mechanism is also provided to limit the movement between the sliding lid and the bottle.
- However, these patents fail to describe a container with a security lock which is easy to use. Further, these patents fail to provide for a container with a security lock which allows a user to unlock a child-resistant container in a simple and safe manner.
- A container with a security lock is provided. The container may have a lid (or “top”) portion and a bottom portion. The lid portion may have an exterior cover and a bottom ring which are separated by a compression spring. Once extended protrusions on both the exterior cover and bottom ring of the lid are vertically aligned, a specific pressing and then twisting motion must be used to separate the lid from the bottom portion to gain access to the interior of the container. The bottom portion may receive contents such as medication which may be securely stored and protected from children who might otherwise access an unprotected and unsecured container.
- An advantage of the present child resistant storage container is that the present child resistant storage container is suitable for seniors which typically have difficulty opening typical child resistant containers.
- And another advantage of the present child resistant storage container is that the present container keeps the contents of the container secure and dry in a moisture-resistant manner.
- Still another advantage of the present child resistant storage container is that the present container lacks exterior sharp edges and corners which may otherwise injure someone.

Further, additional features and advantages of the invention are described in, and will be apparent from, the detailed description of the preferred embodiments.

Once extended protrusions on both the exterior cover and bottom ring of the lid are vertically aligned, a specific pressing and then twisting motion must be used to separate the lid from the bottom portion to gain access to the interior of the container. The bottom portion may receive contents such as medication which may be securely stored and protected from children who might otherwise access an unprotected and unsecured container.
- Referring first to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , in an embodiment a securedcontainer 1 is provided. Thecontainer 1 may have a lid (or “top”)portion 10 and abottom portion 50. Thecontainer 1 may be especially suitable for securing an item 100 (FIG. 4 ), such as medication, which can potentially be harmful to individuals, such as children, whom might otherwise gain access to the item (such as medicine) from a non-secure container. In an embodiment, thecontainer 1 is largely made of a durable material, such as plastic and/or metal. In one embodiment, thecontainer 1 is largely made of tin. - Referring now to
FIG. 4 , in an embodiment, thelid portion 10 may be made of three different units which remain attached to each other. Specifically, thelid portion 10 may have anexterior cover 20, aspring 30 and abottom ring 40. Theexterior cover 20 may be the portion of the lid that is most visible to the user. Theexterior cover 20 may have a top 21, abottom rim 22 and a generallycylindrical side 23. The top 21 of thelid 10 may have a plurality ofextended protrusions 24 which may be, for example, generally rectangular in shape. In an embodiment, theprotrusions 24 are located at or near the perimeter of theexterior cover 20 for easier twisting of thelid 10 when theprotrusions extended protrusions 24 on theexterior cover 20; however, a greater or fewer number ofprotrusions 24 may be used. Anunderside 25 of each of theextended protrusion 24 may have an upward indentation that may mirror the size, shape and location as theextended protrusions 24, as shown inFIG. 9 . More specifically, theextended protrusions 24 may be hollow bumps on theexterior cover 20. - In an embodiment, the
bottom ring 40 may have a plurality ofextended protrusions 44 which surround an indentedcircular portion 65 having a diameter similar to or slightly larger than the diameter of the bottom of thespring 30. The indentedcircular portion 65 may receive and therein secure thespring 30 and may prevent thespring 30 from sliding or moving away from the center of thebottom ring 40 of thelid 10. In an embodiment, the same number (and location) of extendedprotrusions 24 which are located on theexterior cover 20 of thelid 10 are present on thebottom ring 40 of thelid 10. Further, a center point 28 (FIG. 9 ) of each of the extendedprotrusions 24 of theexterior cover 20 may be located directly above acenter point 48 of the extendedprotrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 of thelid 10 when theprotrusions protrusions protrusions 24 of theexterior cover 20 of thelid 10 substantially match theprotrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 of thelid 10. - The
bottom ring 40 of thelid 10 may resemble theexterior cover 20 of thelid 10, but may have slightly different dimensions. For example, an interior diameter 27 (FIG. 10 ) of theexterior cover 20 may be slightly greater than aninterior diameter 47 ofbottom ring 40 so that thebottom ring 40 may snuggly fit under theexterior cover 20. Thebottom ring 40 may further have a top surface 41 (FIG. 4 ), abottom lip 42 and a generallycylindrical side 43. - In an embodiment, an
interior diameter 29 of theextended protrusion 24 of theexterior cover 20 may be slightly greater than aninterior diameter 49 of theextended protrusion 44 of thebottom ring 40 so that theextended protrusion 44 of thebottom ring 40 may partially fit within theunderside 25 of theextended protrusion 24 of theexterior cover 40 when theexterior cover 20 and thebottom ring 40 are locked together inFIG. 10 . - Located between the
exterior cover 20 and thebottom ring 40 may be thespring 30. Thespring 30 may be generally cylindrical and may be placed between theexterior cover 20 and thebottom ring 40 without being physically secured to either. As a result, theexterior cover 20 andbottom ring 40 may rotate with respect to each other. As stated above, thespring 30 may rest in theindented portion 65 of thebottom ring 40. As a result, theexterior cover 20 may freely rotate three hundred and sixty degrees with respect to thebottom ring 40 when thespring 30 forces theexterior cover 20 away from thebottom ring 40, as shown inFIG. 9 . Thespring 30 may have aheight 33, which, while in the resting state as shown inFIG. 9 , is greater than aheight 60 of theextended protrusion 44 of thebottom ring 40. When thespring 30 is compressed, the height of thespring 30 becomes less than theheight 60 of theextended protrusion 44 of the bottom ring 40 (or at least thespring 30 may have a lower overall height surface than theextended protrusion 44 of thebottom ring 40 while thespring 30 is compressed and resting in the circular indentation portion 65). - More specifically, the
exterior cover 20 may rotate three hundred and sixty degrees with respect to thebottom ring 40 as a result of the extendedprotrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 not contacting theunderside 25 of theextended protrusion 24 of theexterior cover 20. Therefore, when a user manually twists theexterior cover 20 while thespring 30 is expanded (as shown inFIG. 9 ) the extendedprotrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 to not catch any portion of theexterior cover 20. - When a user first applies downward pressure on the top 21 of the
exterior cover 20, thespring 30 is compressed. When thespring 30 is compressed a user may have to slowly twist theexterior cover 20 until theextended protrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 then partially slide into theunderside 25 of the correspondingprotrusions 24 of the exterior cover 20 (as shown inFIG. 10 ). When this happens, the twisting of theexterior cover 20 therein also twists thebottom ring 40 in unison. - When the
bottom ring 40 and theexterior cover 20 of thelid 10 are twisted in unison, aprotrusion 75 located on the interior surface of theside 43 of thebottom ring 40 turns (along with thebottom ring 40 itself). For illustrative purposes, the figures illustrate theprotrusions 75 as if theside 43 of thebottom ring 40 were to be transparent. If theside 43 of thebottom ring 40 were not transparent, theprotrusions 43 would not be visible from the perspective shown in the Figures, but would only be visible from the underside of thebottom ring 40. Theprotrusions 43 must face inward so that they can interact with thecatch devices 90 as described below. - In an embodiment, the
protrusion 75 may be slightly slanted upward as shown inFIG. 3 . Theprotrusion 75 may then interact with a catch device 90 (or ‘securing mechanism’) located on thebottom portion 50 of thecontainer 1. Thecatch device 90 may be a generally u-shaped inverted device. In an embodiment, thecatch device 90 may have atop surface 91 which is slanted and afirst prong 92 and asecond prong 93 which, together, form apocket 94. In an embodiment, the slant of theprotrusion 75 may largely mirror the slant of thecatch device 90. In an embodiment, thecontainer 1 may havemultiple protrusions 75 andmultiple catch devices 90, as is shown inFIG. 4 . For illustrative purposes,FIGS. 4 and 8 show all fourcatch devices 90 as if the top rim of thebottom unit 50 were to be transparent. If the top rim of thebottom unit 50 is not transparent then you would not see the top twocatch devices 90 inFIGS. 4 and 8 from that perspective, but would only see the front twocatch devices 90. - Located on the exterior side of the
second prong 93 may be anextended flange 95 which may catch theprotrusions 75 when thetop portion 10 is twisted. Once aprotrusion 75 contacts the outside of the catch device 90 (just to the right of the second prong 93) a user may push thelid 10 down even further so that theprotrusions 75 move slightly downward even farther with respect to thecatch device 90 and then, when pressure is released as thelid 10 is slightly turned to the left, the protrusion becomes temporarily locked in thepocket 94 of thecatch device 90 and remains there until the user decides to open thecontainer 1 my pushing down on thelid 10, slightly twisting thelid 10 and releasing theprotrusion 75 form thecatch device 90. - Referring now to
FIGS. 11 and 12 , thelid 10 is shown placed on thebottom portion 50 of the container 1 (in a cross sectional view) while thelid 10 is in the process of being rotated, but is not yet locked into thecatch device 90 of thebottom portion 50 of thecontainer 1. When thetop portion 10 is rotated further, theprotrusion 75 of thelid 10 gets caught and locks into thecatch device 90 of thebottom portion 50 and therein locks thelid 10 to the bottom portion 50 (as shown inFIG. 12 ) when thelid 10 is pushed down and slightly twisted. - To release the
lid 10 from thebottom portion 50, a user presses down on the top 21 of theexterior cover 20 of thelid 10 and therein compresses thespring 30. Theprotrusion 75 of thebottom ring 40 then gets pushed out of thepocket 94 of thecatch device 90 of thebottom ring 40 and thelid 10 may then be rotated with respect to thebottom portion 50 and thelid 10 may therein be removed from thebottom portion 50. In order to rotate theexterior cover 20, as stated above, theprotrusions 24 of theexterior cover 20 must be located within the extendedprotrusions 44 of thebottom ring 40 of thetop portion 10. - In an embodiment, the
lid 10 may have a curled, inward-rolled edge so that thecontainer 1 is smooth and forms an air-tight seal with the container is sealed. This may increase safety, reduce air and contaminants from contacting thecontents 100 of thecontainer 1 and may also increase the appearance of thecontainer 1. Finally, in one embodiment, thelid 10 and thebottom portion 50 may be slightly magnetically attracted to each other so as to form a greater seal. - Although embodiments of the invention are shown and described therein, it should be understood that various changes and modifications to the presently preferred embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Such changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and without diminishing its attendant advantages.
