Abstract
Description
- The present disclosure relates to barricades, and more particularly to a portable barricade and barricade support device.
- Barricades, such as temporary construction barricades, can assist in protecting people and property from harm. Typical construction barricades are stationary and require significant cost and effort to be relocated.
- The present disclosure provides, in part, a portable barricade and support device that is stable, easily deployed and easily relocated. In various embodiments, the barricade and support device include an arrangement of weight supporting platforms with vertical struts secured thereto, with one or more barricade elements secured adjacent the vertical struts. Casters or other suitable rolling devices are secured under the platforms to permit barricade mobility. The platforms may optionally be fixedly secured together by a horizontal strut, and one or more backing brace members may optionally be secured to the platforms and the vertical struts for additional support.

Like numbers refer to like elements throughout. The presently disclosed subject matter may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Indeed, many modifications and other embodiments of the presently disclosed subject matter set forth herein will come to mind to one skilled in the art to which the presently disclosed subject matter pertains having the benefit of the teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated drawings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the presently disclosed subject matter is not to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed and that modifications and other embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
- It will be appreciated that reference to “a”, “an” or other indefinite article in the present disclosure encompasses one or more than one of the described element. Thus, for example, reference to a platform may encompass one or more platforms, and so forth.
- In the
barricade support device 10 according to embodiments of the present disclosure as shown inFIGS. 1 through 5 , elements as shown include: one ormore platforms 20, one ormore weight members 25 supported by eachplatform 20, ahorizontal strut 30 secured on thetop faces 21 of theplatforms 20, one or morevertical struts 40 secured to thetop faces 21 of theplatforms 20 and one or morerolling components 35 secured on theunderside 22 of eachplatform 20. It will be appreciated that the device can operate with or without the horizontal strut in different embodiments. In various embodiments, asingle platform 20 spanning a longer distance can be employed, with one ormore weights 25 positioned thereon. The weight(s) 25 may be retained in position by a threadedbolt 60 extending through theplatform 20 and a center opening in theweight 25. Thebolt 60 can be secured at the threaded end by asuitable nut 62, for example. Alternatively, a rod (not shown) may extend upwardly of theface 21 of theplatform 20 to receive and retainweight members 25 having an opening extending therethrough. It will be appreciated thatmultiple weight members 25 of the same or varying weight and/or size may be positioned atop theplatform 20 as required for proper ballasting. Thestruts openings 33 on all four sides. The series ofopenings 33 can be aligned, at least as to opposing faces, so as to permit connection to external components through bolts or other devices that may be inserted through theopenings 33. - As shown in
FIGS. 1 through 5 , therolling components 35 are swivel casters with heavy load bearing capacity. In various embodiments, aswivel caster 35 is provided at each of the four corners of therectangular platform 20 and can be secured usingbolts 17 extending throughopenings 18 in theplatform 20 that are securely affixed tonuts 19, for example. Thecasters 35 permit theplatform 20 to be moved in any lateral direction. In various embodiments, thetop face 21 of each of the plurality ofplatforms 20 has afront edge 26 and arear edge 28. Thehorizontal strut 30 can be secured to thetop face 21 adjacent thefront edge 26 of one or more of theplatforms 20, such as by one or more threadedstuds 27 extending upwardly above thetop face 21 through opening(s) 29 in theplatform 20. Thestuds 27 can extend throughopenings 33 in thehorizontal strut 30 and can be secured by anut 37 on theouter face 31 of thehorizontal strut 30. It will be appreciated that other forms of securing thehorizontal strut 30 to theplatforms 20 can be employed, such as, for example, securing thestrut 30 to the front face orunderside 22 of theplatforms 20. When thehorizontal strut 30 is secured tomultiple platforms 20, it provides a stabilizing brace to support lateral movement of thebarricade support device 10 and minimizes relative movement between theplatforms 20, which can destabilize thebarricade support device 10 and potentially damage the supportedwall element 50. In alternative embodiments, therolling component 35 can be provided as rollers or wheels of fixed orientation permitting travel in linear directions. The rolling component need not necessarily be positioned at the corners of the platform but may be positioned at different locations under theplatform 20. - As shown in
FIGS. 1 through 5 , awall support saddle 45 can be secured to thetop face 21 of eachplatform 20 and can be supported, at least in part, by flare andgusset plates 55. In various embodiments, the flare andgusset plates 55 are formed with astrut abutment 57 and anangled flare segment 59, wherein theflare segment 59 extends at an acute angle A to theinside face 44 of thewall support saddle 45 and out to arespective side edge 49 of theplatform 20. Theabutment 57 andflare segment 59 are in contact with the platformtop face 21 and provide anchoring stability to thewall support saddle 45 as it supports avertical male strut 40 andwall member 50. In various embodiments, angle A ranges from approximately twenty to approximately forty degrees to provide stability to thewall support saddle 45 and supportedmale strut 40. As shown inFIGS. 1 through 7 , thevertical male strut 40 is inserted into thewall support saddle 45, and themale strut 40 supports a wall and/orwall elements 50 forming the barricade. Thevertical strut 40 can be secured to thewall support saddle 45 by bolt and nut connection through alignedopenings struts wall 50 is provided as awallboard 52 with a frame-type support 54, and theframe support 54 is secured to the vertical strut(s) 40 by one ormore saddle brackets 70 and one ormore base brackets 72. Thewallboard 52 may be provided as a single large sheet or as modular segments that are secured to and/or held by theframe support 54. -
FIGS. 3 and 6 through 8 show different views of abase bracket 72 in accordance with the present disclosure. As can be seen therein, thebase bracket 72 can be provided with a wallside support segment 73, a wall under-support segment 75 and atop segment 77 for securing to thetop face 21 of aplatform 20 at an inner edge thereof, such as therear edge 28. The wallside support segment 73, wall under-support segment 75 andtop segment 77 can be integrally formed as amonolithic base bracket 72, for example. In various embodiments, the wall under-support segment 75 extends substantially perpendicularly from the wallside support segment 73 at abottom edge 74 of the wallside support segment 73. Alip segment 79 extends substantially perpendicularly from wall under-support segment 75 at anouter end 76 of the wall under-support segment 75. Thetop segment 77 extends substantially perpendicularly from wallside support segment 73 at atop edge 71 of the wallside support segment 73. Thewall 50 is received in theslot 78 created by the wallside support segment 73, the wall under-support segment 75 and thelip segment 79. In various embodiments, thetop segment 77 extends in a direction opposite to the direction of extension of the wall under-support segment 75. Thetop segment 77 can be secured to therear edge 28 of thetop face 21 of one ormore platforms 20 using bolts and nuts, where the bolts extend throughopenings 80 in thetop segment 77, for example. In various embodiments, thetop segment 77 is formed with one ormore notch openings 82, such that thetop segment 77 can fit around thewall support saddle 45 secured to thetop face 21 of theplatform 20. - In various embodiments, as shown in
FIGS. 9 and 10 , abacking brace member 90 is secured to thevertical strut 40 andhorizontal strut 30 so as to provide additional support to an attachedwall 50. Thebacking brace member 90 can be formed with a substantiallyvertical segment 92 extending upwardly from theplatform 20 and/orhorizontal strut 30 and anangled segment 94 extending from atop portion 93 of thevertical segment 92 at an angle to thevertical strut 40. Aflange 95 can be formed with theangled segment 94 and secured to thevertical strut 40 using a bolt and nut connection through anopening 33 in thevertical strut 40. Thebottom portion 97 of thevertical segment 92 can be secured to thehorizontal strut 30 using a bolt and nut connection, such as where a bolt extends through an opening formed in thebrace member 90 and an opening (e.g., 33) in a front side of thehorizontal strut 30, and where a nut securely engages the bolt on the back side of thestrut 30, for example. In various embodiments, theangled segment 94 extends downwardly from thevertical strut 40 to the top portion of thevertical segment 92 at an angle B of between thirty and fifty degrees to provide stability while avoiding any impeding of theweight members 25 stacked on the platform(s) 20. - In embodiments as shown in
FIGS. 9 and 10 , for example, such as where thebarricade support device 10 may be employed around adoorway 100 or other structure, one or more cross struts 110 can be secured laterally betweenvertical struts 40. Such cross struts 110 can be secured using pairs of L-brackets 115 that are formed as L-shaped hollow intersecting rectangular prisms, where eachbracket 115 can fit over astrut 40 and be secured by bolt and nut connection, for example, to arespective strut 40 where the bolt extends throughholes 33 in thestrut 40 as described elsewhere herein. Thus, as shown inFIG. 9 , the cross struts 110 provide support for thewall 50 andframe 54 where there is a gap (e.g., at doorway 100) in the sequence of vertical struts 42. It will be appreciated that a singlehorizontal strut 30 will not necessarily extend across allplatforms 20 in such embodiments, as such ahorizontal strut 30 extending over the gap atdoorway 100 in the example ofFIG. 9 would potentially create a tripping hazard to persons seeking to enter and exit throughdoorway 100. As such, multiplehorizontal struts 30 may be employed.
