Abstract

An adjustable bed cover having a bed panel and an adjustable panel. The bed panel is generally rectangular and having an interior enclosure that can receive a duvet or similar item. A plurality of slide fastening mechanisms can allow access in the interior enclosure while also creating a plurality of vent panels proximate a bottom edge of the bed panel. The adjustable panel is generally rectangular configuration and mates with the bed panel proximate the bed panels top edge forming a plurality of arm openings between the two panels. The adjustable bed cover providing ability to adjust the bed panel to regulate temperature, provide desired body coverage and provide desired freedom of movement.

Description

    REFERENCE TO PENDING APPLICATIONS
  • This application claims the benefit of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 15/863,682 filed on Jan. 5, 2018 entitled Split Panel Bed Cover.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention
  • The present invention generally relates to bed coverings, and in particular to an adjustable bed covering to provide the ability to regulate body temperature, ability to provide desired body coverage and to provide the desired freedom of movement with the ability to provide artistic options.
  • Background
  • Bed coverings are typically used to provide warmth and comfort to a person using a bed. These coverings can include, but are not limited to, blankets, quilts and duvets. However, the prior art coverings can provide an uncomfortable temperature level, especially around a person's lower torso and legs. Discomfort can arise while an individual sleeps due to these uncomfortable temperature levels. Existing bed coverings do not provide for the ability to adjust the covering of the lower torso and legs to regulate the desired temperature.
  • Additionally, existing coverings do not allow for the freedom of movement of the arms while maintaining coverage and warmth of the shoulders. This prevents a person from conducting activities such as reading books while maintaining a desired coverage over the remainder of the person's body.
  • Additionally, these coverings can be restrictive. They do not allow for a freedom of movement of the legs and arms. Accordingly, there is a need for an improved bed covering.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The inventive concept is generally directed toward bed coverings, and more specifically toward an adjustable bed covering.
  • In one aspect, a bed cover having a bed panel is disclosed. The bed panel is generally rectangular and a plurality of vent panels proximate a bottom edge of the bed panel. These vent panels provide the ability to adjust the bed panel to regulate temperature and provide desired freedom of movement of the lower torso and legs.
  • In another aspect, a bed cover having an adjustable panel is disclosed. The adjustable panel is generally rectangular configuration and mates with the bed panel proximate the bed panels top edge forming a plurality of arm openings between the two panels. The adjustable bed cover provides the ability to provide desired body coverage and warmth, and provides desired freedom of movement of the arms.
  • In another aspect, a bed cover having a bed panel and an adjustable panel is disclosed. In this aspect, the bed panel and adjustable panel discussed above are combine.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • As illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3, an embodiment of a bed cover 10 is illustrated. Cover 10 includes a bed panel 12 and an adjustable panel 30. Bed cover 10 may be any type of covering used to provide warmth and comfort to a person using a bed, including but not limited to a quilt, blanket and a duvet. Bed cover 10 may be constructed of all materials accepted by the industry.
  • Bed panel 12 has a bed panel upper side 20 and a bed panel lower side 22. Bed panel 12 further includes a bed panel top edge 14, a bed panel bottom edge 16 which is opposite bed panel top edge 14 and two opposing bed panel side edges 18.
  • A plurality of vent edges 26 extend from bed panel bottom edge into the interior of bed panel 12. The plurality of vent edges 26 create a plurality of vent panels 24 along the bottom portion of bed panel 12. The plurality of vent panel fasteners 28 are located along the vent edges 26 and provide for the release ability of the plurality of vent panels 24. In this embodiment, it is illustrated to include a plurality of vent edges. It is understood by those skilled in the art that a single vent edge may be used and is within the scope of the invention.
  • In operation, a person may open one or more of the vent panels by disconnecting vent panel fasteners 28. This allows the person to have the ability to adjust and regulate the person's body temperature by uncovering and/or covering the person's lower torso and legs. Further this allows the person to have a more controlled freedom of movement within the bed panel 12.
  • In some embodiments, the plurality of vent edges 26 may extend approximately the same distance into the interior of bed panel 12, and may extend in a generally parallel direction relative to that panel side edges 18.
  • In some embodiments vent panel fasteners may be any type of conventional fastening means such as but not limited to buttons, snaps, hook and mesh fasteners, and zippers.
  • In some embodiments, vent edges 26 extend up to and including bed panel bottom edge 16. This allows for each vent panel 24 to have a flap like configuration as shown in FIG. 3. In some embodiments, vent edges 26 extend up to but not including panel bottom edge 16. In this embodiment, vent panels 24 are unitary with bed panel with panel 12, as shown in FIG. 4.
  • As shown in FIG. 5, an embodiment of adjustable panel 30 is disclosed. Adjustable panel 30 has an adjustable panel upper side 40 and an adjustable panel lower side 42. Adjustable panel 30 further includes an adjustable panel top edge 32, an adjustable panel bottom edge 34 which is opposite adjustable panel top edge 32, and two opposing adjustable panel side edges 36.
  • A plurality of adjustment fasteners 38 adjustably secure adjustment panel 30 with bed panel 12. In one embodiment of adjustment fasteners 38, each fastener 38 includes an adjustable panel portion 48 and a bed panel portion 46. These portions mate with each other to releasably secure bed panel 12 with adjustable panel 30. Adjustment fasteners 38 may be any conventional securing fastener. In one embodiment adjustment fasteners 38 may be snaps as shown in FIG. 6. And in another embodiment fasteners 38 may be hook and mesh fasteners as shown in FIG. 7. The inclusion of these fasteners is meant to be illustrative and not meant to be limiting.
  • As shown in the figures once adjustment panel 30 has been secured to bed panel 12 a plurality of arm openings 44 is created. This allows a person to extend their arms through the openings allowing the arms to have access outside of the bed cover while maintaining body coverage over the upper body region including the shoulders of the person. This allows for a constant coverage of the shoulders and upper torso in an effort to reduce any discomfort associated with the ambient temperature. Further, this allows for a person to have a freedom of movement by the arms for non-sleep-related activities such as reading a book or using an electronic device while also providing coverage and warmth of the shoulder/upper torso area.
  • In another embodiment, adjustment panel 30 can be utilized independent from bed panel 12. Separate adjustment panel 30 may be adjustably attached to an existing blanket, duvet cover, or other cover. This allows adjustment panel 30 to be used with existing covers to provide freedom of movement while providing coverage of the shoulder/upper torso area.
  • In another embodiment, two bed covers 10 can be utilized to create a sleeve for use with existing duvets. In this embodiment, the two bed covers 10 may be joined to form the duvet cover. The vent edges of each bed cover are aligned in order to create aligned vent panels.
  • As shown in FIGS. 8-13, an additional embodiment of a bed cover 100 is illustrated. Bed cover 100 may be any type of covering used to provide warmth and comfort to a person using a bed, including but not limited to a quilt, blanket and a duvet. Bed cover 100 may be constructed of all materials accepted by the industry.
  • Bed cover 100 includes a bed panel upper panel 120 a and a bed panel lower panel 120 b. In some embodiments, bed cover 100 also includes an adjustable panel 200. Adjustable panel 200 has an adjustable panel upper side 202 and an adjustable panel lower side 204. Adjustable panel 200 further includes an adjustable panel top edge 206, an adjustable panel bottom edge 208 which is opposite adjustable panel top edge 206, and two opposing adjustable panel side edges 210. A plurality of adjustment fasteners 212 adjustably secure adjustment panel 200 with bed panel upper panel 120 a. Adjustment fasteners 212 may be any conventional securing fastener, including but not limited to snaps, button fasteners or hook and mesh fasteners.
  • Each of bed panel upper and lower panels 120 a, 120 b further includes two opposing side edges 128 a, 128 b, 130 a, 130 b, a top edge 122 a, 122 b, a first lower edge 124 a, 124 b, a second lower edge 126 a, 126 b, where both the first and second lower edges 124 a, 124 b, 126 a, 126 b are opposite of the top edge 122 a, 122 b.
  • Each of the bed panel upper panel edges 122 a, 124 a, 126 a, 128 a, 130 a are configured for attachment to their corresponding counterpart bed panel lower panel edges, 122 b, 124 b, 126 b, 128 b, 130 b e.g. top edge 122 a is attached to top edge 122 b, etc., to form a bed cover interior enclosure 132, see FIG. 10. The bed cover interior enclosure 132 allows for the insertion of a duvet or other item to provide additional warming capability to the bed cover 100.
  • Each bed panel upper and lower panels 120 a, 120 b further include a first interior edge 134 a, 134 b and a second interior edge 136 a, 136 b which is opposite to the first interior edge 134 a, 134 b. Both first interior edges 134 a, 134 b extend from the first lower edges 124 a, 124 b into the interior of bed panel upper and lower panels 120 a, 120 b. Further, both second interior edges 136 a, 136 b extend from the second lower edges 126 a, 126 b into the interior of bed panel upper and lower panels 120 a, 120 b.
  • In this embodiment, an upper panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism 150 a is disposed between first interior edge 134 a and second interior edge 136 a, while a lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism 150 b is disposed between second interior edge 134 b and second interior edge 136 b. Upper and lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 150 a, 150 b each may be a zipper or other similar fastening device. When both upper and lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 150 a, 150 b are in a closed position, the bed cover interior enclosure 132 is completely enclosed to the outside. However, when one or both of the mechanisms 150 a, 150 b are in an open position, an opening 151 can be established to allows access into the bed cover interior enclosure 132 for the insertion of a duvet or other item to provide additional warming capability to the bed cover 100.
  • In this embodiment, a first side mechanical slide fastener mechanism 160 is disposed between first interior edge 134 a and first interior edge 134 b, while a second side mechanical slide fastener mechanism 170 is disposed between second interior edge 136 a and second interior edge 136 b. First and second side mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 160, 170 may be a zipper or other similar fastening device.
  • The inclusion of the upper and lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 150 a, 150 b, along with the first and second side mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 160, 170 allow for flexibility and versatility in the use of bed cover 100. When upper and lower panel mechanisms 150 a, 150 b are in a closed position, the bed cover interior enclosure 132 is enclosed allowing the bed cover 100 to utilized as a traditional bed cover.
  • Embodiments of first and second side mechanism 160, 170 include a first side track 162, 172 and a second side track 164, 174. As shown in FIGS. 14 and 15, first side track 162 can be can be attached to the upper panel 120 a along the first interior edge 134 a and the second side track 164 can be can be attached to the lower panel 120 b along the first interior edge 134 b. Further, second side track 172 can be can be attached to the upper panel 120 a along the second interior edge 136 a and the second side track 174 can be can be attached to the lower panel 120 b along the second interior edge 136 b.
  • When one or both of the upper and lower panel mechanisms 150 a, 150 b are in an open position and one or both side mechanisms 160, 170 are in an open position, a user may have access into the bed cover interior enclosure 132. In this situation, a user may insert or remove a duvet or other item from within the enclosure 132. For example, as shown in FIG. 11, an embodiment of upper panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism 150 a includes an upper first track 152 a and an upper second track 154 a. As shown, the upper first and second tracks 152 a, 154 a can be attached to the upper panel 120 a along the first and second interior edges 134 a, 136 a. Further, first and second side mechanical slide fastener mechanisms 160, 170 are in an open position while, lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism 150 b remains in a closed position and can be seen through opening 151.
  • When both the upper and lower panel mechanisms 150 a, 150 b are in an open position and both side mechanisms 160, 170 are in a closed position access to the bed cover interior enclosure 132 is closed off and two vent panels 180 a, 180 b, 182 a, 182 b are created for each bed panel upper and lower panels 120 a, 120 b, as illustrated in FIGS. 12 and 13.
  • While preferred embodiments of the present inventive concept have been shown and disclosed herein, it will be obvious to those persons skilled in the art that such embodiments are presented by way of example only, and not as a limitation to the scope of the inventive concept. Variations, changes, and substitutions may occur or be suggested to those skilled in the art without departing from the intent, scope, and totality of this inventive concept. Such variations, changes, and substitutions may involve other features which are already known per se and which may be used instead of, in combination with, or in addition to features already disclosed herein. Accordingly, it is intended that this inventive concept be inclusive of such variations, changes, and substitutions, and by no means limited by the scope of the claims presented herein.

Claims (5)

I claim:
1. A bed cover comprising:
an upper panel having a generally rectangular configuration, the upper panel having
an upper panel first side edge,
an upper panel second side edge that is opposing the upper panel first side edge,
an upper panel top edge,
an upper panel first bottom edge, and
an upper panel second bottom edge, where the upper panel first and second bottom edges oppose the upper panel top edge,
a lower panel having generally rectangular configuration, the lower panel having
a lower panel first side edge configured for attachment to the upper panel first side edge,
a lower panel second side edge that is opposing the lower panel first side edge and is configured for attachment to the upper panel second side edge,
a lower panel top edge configured for attachment to the upper panel top edge,
a lower panel first bottom edge configured for attachment to the upper panel first bottom edge, and
a lower panel second bottom edge, wherein the lower panel first and second bottom edges oppose the lower panel top edge and is configured for attachment to the upper panel second bottom edge forming a bed cover interior enclosure between the upper panel and the lower panel;
the upper panel further including
a first upper interior edge that extends from the upper panel first bottom edge into the interior of upper panel to form a first upper vent panel,
a second upper interior edge which is opposite to the first upper interior edge and that extends from the upper panel second bottom edge into the interior of upper panel to form a second upper vent panel, and
an upper panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism disposed between the first upper interior edge and the second upper interior edge;
the lower panel further including
a first lower interior edge that extends from the lower panel first bottom edge into the interior of lower panel to form a first lower vent panel,
a second lower interior edge which is opposite to the first lower interior edge and that extends from the lower panel second bottom edge into the interior of lower panel to form a second lower vent panel, and
a lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism disposed between the first lower interior edge and the second lower interior edge;
a first side mechanical slide fastener mechanism disposed between first upper interior edge and the first lower interior edge; and
a second side mechanical slide fastener mechanism disposed between the second upper interior edge and the second lower interior edge.
2. The bed cover of claim 1, wherein each of the upper panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism, lower panel mechanical slide fastener mechanism, first side mechanical slide fastener mechanism and second side mechanical slide fastener mechanism are zippers.
3. The bed cover of claim 1, wherein the first upper interior edge and the second upper interior edge extend approximately between one quarter and three quarters the length of the upper panel first and second side edges, and wherein first lower interior edge and the second lower interior edge extend approximately between one quarter and three quarters the length of the lower panel first and second side edges.
4. The bed cover of claim 1, wherein the first upper interior edge and the second upper interior edge are generally parallel to the upper panel first and second side edges, and wherein first lower interior edge and the second lower interior edge are generally parallel to the lower panel first and second side edges.
5. The bed cover of claim 1, further comprising:
an adjustable panel having a generally rectangular configuration and being adjustably secured to the upper panel forming a plurality of arm openings between the panels,
thereby providing ability to adjust the adjustable panel to provide desired body coverage and provide desired freedom of movement.
